Do you know of any resources or posts specifically about captioning comics? I am very new to this, but I love comics and I make comics so I want to learn how to caption them properly. Thank you for your blog and all you do!

Delighted you asked this, since it gives me the excuse to share one of my top favorite posts about exactly that!!! I used @/TheQueerWithoutFear's addition in this post as a personal bible when starting out with art IDs! I think this post also has advice which is generally applicable to lots of comic IDs, since people can get bogged down writing every single detail of a piece when the broad strokes would do and thus detract from the overall comprehensibility of an ID. I also really appreciate this site as a great resource for examples on how to write concisely and with an audience in mind, and this post also lays out a lot of good tips! I'll round out this post with some general advice/guidelines:

Neither alt text nor caption IDs are better or even necessarily more accessible than the other; what matters is good formatting (so please don't put IDs below a readmore or use anything but plain text, use sentence case and primarily formal language, use brackets and "ID/End ID" formatting for caption IDs but omit them from alt, etc!)

For comics, especially long ones, I personally favor conciseness over strict fidelity to art, though this is highly subjective and depends on the piece and sometimes my mood. What I would boil this down to is that you don't need to include every detail in a piece to write a good ID, and using narration/prose is often more understandable than transcribing visual techniques (Ex: "She notices something to the side" is clearer and more succinct than "Action lines next to her face indicate she saw something to the side")

Organizing an ID's information in a top-down format is best for comprehensibility: start with who/what is featured (and where they're from, if applicable) and what they're doing, and then move on to background, style, and details

hi, i hope you don't mind me asking, you totally don't have to answer if you're not comfortable, i just wondered if you could go into more detail about splitting?

ofc i can!! so splitting means a person has difficulty accurately assessing another individual or situation. it can lead to intensely polarizing views of others, for instance, as either very good or very bad (the black and white thinking, either its x or y and nothing in between)

example: (from a bpd persons perspective)

fp: *is busy and doesn’t have time to hang out with you*

pwbpd: do you hate me? why can’t you make time with me, i make time for you so why am i not important to you?

- this is splitting because the person with bpd can’t see the fact that other people have lives and can’t always drop what they’re doing to hang out with them at all given times, so they get angry and “split” on them “they must hate me” “they’re the worst person i’ve ever even met” “i hate them” “i wish i never even met them” so rather than seeing people in their lives as complex human beings with good, bad, and in-between characteristics, they may apply intensely polarizing or exaggerated labels to the action

this could last from 5 minutes to a month or more depending on the person. people without bpd see this as overdramatic, a tantrum, immature, etc. but the pwbpd truly does not understand this concept at the time.

sometimes a person with bpd typically splits unconsciously or without realizing it, some people,, like myself are very self aware and can tell before hand or during but can’t control themselves.

some symptoms of splitting is idealizing someone one moment, then later calling them abusive or toxic (externally or internally) not seeing distinctions in the relationships or actions of others, cutting people out of their life, then expressing feelings of abandonment

some symptoms sensing someone is splitting is many chaotic or unstable relationships, rapidly changing feelings about other people. feelings that seem more intense than the feelings of others, alternating between pushing someone away and wanting them to stay

some of the causes of bpd and splitting are unknown, but there are some that are more common like trauma or stress in childhood, an invalidating environment in early childhood, or even genetic factors

Sorry for not being at my best at this time, I've been having a very special and deep case of Seasonal Depression and a Weird Sad Brain Thing that's been happening to me once and/or twice for the past three years (esp around the Winter/Daylights Savings) or so that my Mom has described as

"It's a period of time that no matter what's going on around you and no matter what people do/say, you just aren't happy and have a hard time with your frustration and anger. It's something you mostly have to just get through and wait for it to be over"

According to her I should be getting to feeling better in two more weeks (since she's estimated this lasts for around 8 weeks or so, since it's started for me in late October) but I have a feeling that we'll have to wait until the sun starts coming back (aka around Spring/Summer)!

the way i draw rumi is based a lot on stuff like the last unicorn bc i loved that book as a kid. so that’s where the fluffy hooves ears and tail come from :-) and i draw all their hair/fur as white but i like to imagine it being kind of shimmery/sparkly like the hair on those old my little pony toys as well. so basically they’re Horse 🐎

also i figure the tail could help them balance since they don’t have plantigrade feet, same as vyncent . and because it looks fun. and i <3 making shit up about how fantasy anatomy works

their skin isn’t meant to be That pale white i just went too crazy with the lighting . or maybe they’re really anemic . who knows

the outfit, jewelry, makeup, etc. are all basically the same as the canon design! only major changes i made were making both the boot designs match + gave them matching armbands/wristbands + gold horseshoes. who’s their farrier? idfk

i added a tiny boob window too for fun as i was making this so i guess that’s just part of my design now

the horns are meant to have a similar texture to crystals, like a kind of angular shape yk? put some pictures of quartz here just to give you an idea. also one horn is meant to be broken like in canon i just accidentally drew both of them that one time and didn’t notice until now. oops

SO! you hate your father but you're stuck living with him for the foreseeable future. everyone's family situation is different, so this isn't the be-all-end-all of advice but it is just a few tips that i have to get through this (also different forms and levels of abuse have an impact as well, if you are in potential harm or danger please try to find resources to actively get out of your situation for your own safety <3)

say xoxo bye bitch! (in your head) for me, step one is kind of ongoing and a constant work in progress, but you need to stop allowing him to have power over you outside of the dynamic of your household. the less you cling to upsetting things he does, the more in control of yourself you are

it doesn't matter if you're right. i've always been highly argumentative with my father because he's an authoritarian asshole, and i'm a smug bastard when i know i'm right. let it go, see point one, he isn't worth your energy

don't worry about making him proud! you're going to be constantly disappointed about not being good enough, because chances are he's a dick who doesn't see that you already are

find someone to talk to. siblings can be good for this, if they feel a similar way, but they might not have your same experience. friends can be good to rant to, or journals if you don't want to annoy your friends, talk it out because that helps you "get over" individual instances

if you're like me and forget what exactly happened or why you're upset, write it down. catalogue instances of abuse or arguments. doesn't have to be an essay, sometimes it's just noting that he yelled at you to shut the fuck up

you're gonna get out of this! let's talk more about the future. he isn't always going to be in charge of you, or someone you live with and have to put up with. you have the capacity to go completely no-contact with him at some point if you want to

think about your healing, even if this doesn't always feel like a big deal, it is. for example here were some of my steps (which overlap, and aren't in a strict step-by-step order) when i thought about it: 1) removal of direct authority 2) removal of internal authority. i'm never going to be his daughter, or his son, i don't need nor want his approval to be happy 3) think about what you realistically want your relationship with him to be like. sure, he has the capacity for change, but you shouldn't have to wait for him. once you have the freedom to entirely fucking ignore him, go for it! maybe you want to have lunch with him once a month, or want him to come to your wedding. maybe you never want to hear from him again. that's all good, it's just useful to have an idea of what you might want

do what you can to make yourself happy. you come first, and you deserve everything that you don't get from him :)

i hope even a little bit of this is useful, feel free to shoot me another ask or follow-up q's. i've spent the last two weeks of the rest of my life without my dad in this house anymore, and i've felt a tremendous amount of relief above all else. also good male role-models can sometimes help

oh I love you so much for asking about this!! ok so 'be gay do crime' (this name is truly growing on me maybe ill just keep it) where do I even begin???

ok I think I will just start by writing some of my ideas for it and see where this goes...

right so one of the story lines I am most excited to write about, funnily enough, is Peter! I have so many ideas for him. first of all he has a mad scientist vibe in his lil poison making underground bunker lab. this guy has zero fear. like, there are no windows in this bunker. he is experimenting and creating new poisons. no fucks are given he is just down there living his best life. OH And his friendship with jamesss!!! god I am so excited about this it is so fucking intense but like in a very weird way. when I finish working on regulus's pov chapter and start working on peter's just know that I will be sending you extensive voice notes about them. (I don't want to say too much here because yknow, gotta keep some things a mystery). I will say though that I am very excited to write his childhood bits because the scene where he comes out as trans to James is so precious to me.

oh and JAMES. god what a mess. he thinks he has everything under control. he thinks he is such a chill guy. honey... sweetheart... I love you... I adore you... but you are a MESS. like, there are so many complicated things going on for him and I will be focusing quite a lot on his relationship with his parents. I know that probably some people will not like that they aren't portrayed as the perfect family but that is just not them in this. the fact that Effie is in the assassin network but Fleamont isn't?? like thats just such a fucked up situation. because when the moment comes for him to choose whether he will also 'sell his soul' to the network he has to betray one of them. and already his parents have a complicated relationship because of their crazily different views on morality and just life in general so being in the middle of that? yeah James has a lot of things he needs to address in that brain of his. it also doesn't help that his bestie sirius is also a MESS so together... yeah

ANYWAY MOVING ON

I wrote this whole thing without even mentioning regulus who's chapter I have been working on this whole time... but YEAH so regulus is a force to be reckoned with. you know how in the vampire diaries they can just switch off their emotions? yeah so that is what regulus thinks he has done. he is very delusional. but it works for him (I mean, it doesn't, he is fucked. but he thinks he is in control so thats all good... it isn't... but-) what else? oh yes how could I not mention how fucking sexy this lil guy is when he murders people? fucking hell. oh and also him and James. lol. hehe. giggling.

I've gained like way too many followers since a few of my art posts blew up a little, so here's one of them fancy intro posts for you newbies:

Hello! My name is Roan, i'm the guy behind the puppy pictures and eerie artwork. I live in The Middle Of Nowhere - Norway. I very recently came out as trans (woo!) And so you might be subject to watching me bumble around that whole situation for a little bit. I do weird art sometimes and I love music, hiking and reading. Aside from that i'm very boring.

The puppy however is very interesting. Røst is a 3 year old English Springer Spaniel. He's dumb as rocks most of the time and a known stinky boy. He loves trick training, working and giving me anxiety. He knows a bunch of tricks, most of which I forgot I ever taught him. Water is the love of his life and he is wet somehow at all times.

This blog is a mix between dog pictures, mine and other people's art, shitposting and sewing?? Sometimes???
