This is sort of stating the obvious but part of what makes me so feral about Phryne's assessment of Jack in 'Death Comes Knocking' is that she's so right. Like, yes, that is that man! That's the character thesis!

And the things she describes are the parts that compel me the most about Jack. I'm absolutely obsessed with the orange-lined coat because it's an element of what Phryne is seeing. Complete professionalism disguising great emotion. She hasn't known him particularly long but she gets him. She sees the core part of him.

Meanwhile Jack, fresh from a divorce, recently confronted with his ex-wife who for their whole marriage saw his dedication to his work as a "lack of ambition" to climb the ranks, knows she's right and freaks out. Retreats back into the persona of the "careful", "cynical" man with "no passions".

But it's alright, because Phryne still sees him. He's putting his coat back on, but she knows the orange lining is still there.

A Transformers Prime aspect ratio theory

I had a random thought for the past few days. Normally, Transformers Prime is shown in widescreen (16:9). But I kinda have a theory that it might have been produced in a way so that it could be cropped to fullscreen (4:3) without losing anything important for the most part (similar to how Disney Television Animation and Warner Bros. Animation had produced their shows in the early 2000s).

The reason I say this? There's quite a few shots that tend to have empty spaces on the left/right sides of the screen.

Here's an example of what I mean. Notice the space behind Megatron and Knock Out.

I cropped it from 1920x1080 (16:9) to 1440x1080 (4:3), and this was the result:

So I then cropped a few more TFP screenshots from 16:9 to 4:3, and everything's still generally intact.

However, this isn't 100% perfect. There are some shots where a character would be cut off (or, at worst, completely hidden from view) if it were cropped to 4:3, so pan-and-scanning would be required for them.

That said, I do have a question: was the show ever actually cropped to 4:3 for broadcast in some countries? The very brief bits/pieces I've seen of the show in the early 2010s (when my older sisters were waiting for MLP:FIM to come on) were definitely in widescreen here in the US for what I remember.

But I wonder about international broadcasts... do let me know how the aspect ratio was handled for those!

Hmmm...

It may only barely if at all be benefiting the AI companies, but it's true that I could be supporting the actual artists with those views and time instead.

I'd really like to keep doing it from time to time, but can't come up with a good argument for that not being at least a little bit harmful.

Tried approaching it from the "personal responsibility for societal issues barely ever matters at this level" angle, but that doesn't work since it concerns small artists for whom even small contributions like a single person sharing their work matter.

seeing all of these new ghoul fuckers come in and get into fo4 and stuff is bringing a tear to meemaws eye. even if the new ghouls look like mole rats and not technicolor corpses. passing the torch along. all these new kudos on fic that’re five, almost ten years old in some cases. :’) i’ve always loved fallout but never considered it would get crazy big compared or have the same staying power compared to a lot of other fandoms. welcome y’all.

There is a soft knock on the door of Jon's office when he gets to work. From within his office.

Jon jolts, surprised, immediately starting feeling lightheaded from the rising heartbeat. The door was definitely locked—or was it?—and none of his colleagues would come to work so early anyway. If not them, then... who? His thoughts race to the worst, as they always do—Mr. Spider. Though, considering that the knock came at him, does it mean that now Jon himself, metaphorically, is Mr. Spider now? But why would it come from inside of his lair? And this isn't really a metaphor—this is just something that is currently happening. Hm. Well, maybe that wasn't a very wise thought.

Still, it does not explain anything. He doesn't feel... threatened, though. Be it his intuition, or passive knowledge from the Eye, or plain denial of his mortality, but it does not feel like he'll get killed as soon as he opens the door.

So that is what he does. He could've turned around and went home, could've asked someone else to go with him, could've knocked back, for God's sake. But he is curious.

Jon turns the key once, listening to any changes inside, then pulls the door open just enough to peek inside—he doesn't come in yet.
