Astelan is the main colored in region. Varza, Creldyn, and the Liuva Empire are nearby countries or empires. Varza and Creldyn have other main roads and cities, but only the roads that connect to Astelanen roads are shown.
Astelan has 4 duchies (which is the current term; it may be changed; the duchies are Ferryn, Hexel, Droit, and Mitnoff) and one capital region (Eroquin).
Astelan used to be part of the Liuva Empire, but won their independence hundreds of years ago (I do have a timeline, I could look up the exact number of years) in the Great Rebellion in which people who already felt disconnected from the Empire due to the mountain range teamed up with young Enid Alysic whose great x many grandmother lost the previous civil war to the Liuva family.
(Basically, this guy Edulf impregnated and married a woman when he was a teenager but then divorced her about 9 or so years later and married another woman and had a child with her as well. The two children fought over who should take over when Edulf died. Wilarich, the son from the second marriage, won and Matilda, the daughter from the first, lost. The war lasted 69 years and for a good portion of it the empire was divided between Liuva and Alysic (a made up last name based on Matilda's mother's first name). Wilarich's great-grandaughter Katerina eventually beat Matilda's granddaughter, Talia).
[ETA: Wow, I totally misinterpreted my notes. I've changed it so taht Wilarich is older and his mother was only ever a mistress. Matilda is ten years younger. I also removed mentions to the Alysic Empire as Matilda, being trueborn, wouldn't make up a new name. Instead, the name change happens because Katerina restores the Gisalic name in honor of her mother, who is a descendant of Nyfain.]
(The Liuva Empire eventually does return after about 300 years during the Hidden Thorn War so named because everyone, up to that point, believed the Liuva family had been killed or had died out. Then Madelyn appears claiming to be a descendant of Gwendolen, the last Liuvan Empress).
[ETA: Gwendolen is no longer the last Liuvan Empress, but Madelyn does still change the empire name back to Liuva as a way of signalling her reign.]
(Do you care about any of this? No. Is it necessary for this map? No. Did I spend an inordinate amount of time last night generating this stuff? Yes).

❛ YO HOLY SHIT HE DEAD ! ❜ (iconic vines meme)
(some-old-psyker) (Noel)
Noel turned around fast to see what was going on. He'd been in the middle of a conversation with Lady Tylaere when Ana's scream cut through the air. The first thing he noticed was Lord Astelan Mercier lying flat in the floor with foam around his mouth. "Ana, did you check his vitals? He might still be alive."
Some of the party guests were screaming at the spectacle. None of them were expecting someone to be murdered during the anniversary of the end of the civil war. The priest sighed as he took two ibuprofen pills from his pocket and downed them with spring water. He could feel a headache coming.

Ok, finally getting back into the swing of things between working on asks (I’m so sorry they’ve taken a hot moment, life do be wild at times), painting, writing and such. With that being said, book talk continues!
On my quest to read a ton of Dark Angel content, I started at the very beginning with the 30k era (Let me tell you, the list given to me just for 30k Dark Angel stuff is quite long). So after Descent of Angels I moved onto Tales of Heresy, which is a collection of stories from different factions.
Short version? Most of them were really good, a few even had some real gut-punching lines, one was nothing but a single strong punch to KO someone.
Longer notes (Rambling really) under the read-more, to various degrees of spoilers.
So the first story was Blood Games, which I had roughly known about beforehand. It’s such a interesting concept, the Custodes purposefully trying to break into the Imperial Palace to find any weak points or flaws. And considering what I know about how Blood Games began, I couldn’t help but chuckle a few times. Very fun to get a custodes pov too, especially from the 30k era and action packed without bordering onto being too much.
Wolf At The Door was next and damn.. It was well written and the story it tells is extremely effective. Once again showing that the Imperium is a brutal machine that grinds all in it’s wake during the Great Crusade. The last line is: Outside, the people of Antimon were still cheering their deliverance when the first bombs began to fall.
Damn.
Scions of The Storm was the next story and no less as brutal. Especially when there’s the line “Less than twenty-four hours later more than a hundred and ninety million people were dead – over ninety-eight per cent of the doomed world’s population.“ Poor Sor Talgron he seems like another decent Word Bearer and he’s going to die horribly later on, I just know it.
The Voice is perhaps the ‘weakest’ of the stories. Not because it was bad, far from it, in fact it was very interesting since it’s solely a Sister of Silence only story and they are so under loved no matter the setting. It’s also very unsettling given that it takes place on a Black Ship and well, you know how the Imperium is with psykers. There’s rivalry, there’s murder and there’s an SoS breaking her vow of silence. Delightful really.
Ah Call Of The Lion, the story that made me crack open this book in the first place. I admit that I only know of Astelan as a Fallen in 40k so reading about him before that was fun! He actually sounds like a pretty cool guy too. But damn did I hate Belath so freaking much. What a lil prick and telling Astelan, “I’m telling the Lion on you!!” Ugh, UGH.
The Last Church is one of those stories I first heard about when I was first getting into Warhammer. Suffice to say I can see why it was mentioned a lot. Uriah was so interesting and damn shout-out to his patience for dealing with Big E.
After Desh’ea is that story I mentioned that was like one long gut punch. This is the story where Kharn survives a beatdown from a freshly ‘returned’ Angron who is rightfully pissed off about everything and mourning the precious people he did have. It hurt to read this between Angron, Kharn and knowing what happens.

Answering the questions from this character questionnaire for Page from my wip bc why not
(Content warning: mention of suicide)
1. Go-to drink order— I just spent an hour figuring out how beverages work in Midan. Page mostly drinks water or Astelan vodka (extremely strong liquor from a neighboring country). Alcohol is very looked down on in Midan but Page does not give a fuck
2. Grooming routine— bare minimum. If left alone they would do less than the bare minimum but their friends keep them in check
3. Most expensive purchase— they don’t really have a ‘disposable income’ atm and even if they did if something was too expensive they might just steal it
4. Scars or tattoos— yea lots of scars. They’ve gotten into a lot of fights and they’ve done a lot of stupidly dangerous things :)
5. Last time they cried— few years ago when trying to keep a friend from committing suicide
6. Family dynamics— they’re technically the oldest child out of their siblings but they have some older first cousins who are basically siblings, so in practice they’re more like a middle child
7. Shoes— practical and comfortable
8. Where they sleep— depends on who their roommate is at the time, a more orthodox one might report them for a lot of stuff, but generally it’s pretty messy and with some stuff on the walls that would 100% get them in trouble with the Ba’di
9. Favorite/least favorite holiday— they spend every holiday complaining about SocietyTM. I don’t feel like finding what I’ve named the main holiday dedicated to love and soulmates and such but that’s their least favorite ((favorite to talk shit about))
10. Objects they always carry with them— not even they know all the stuff in their satchel. There’s a lot left in there. Extra clothes, coins, bits of food stolen from the kitchens. (While they may sometimes forget food in their bag, they have a very keen sense of smell so if it starts to go bad they eat it or get rid of it.) A knife or two. It’s obviously quite heavy for something they carry everywhere, but they’re quite strong. They intend to be prepared for anything— if they have to run, they might not have time to go back to their room.

I finished the Primarchs just in time to take a break from the long, slow, exhausting middle section of Horus Heresy in favor of newly released Emperor’s Legion sequel, the Regent’s Shadow; after which, I’ll get caught up on the Siege of Terra with the First Wall before resuming my penance.
It’s a rough place to break stride, though - the Primarchs anthologizes four short stories featuring Fulgrim, Ferrrus Manus, Lion El’jonson and Omegon, and with the exception of some of the super sneaky Alpha Legion antics in the last one (the twist ending isn’t a twist if you expect it), I hated the entire lot of them.
I think I’ve come to terms with the fact that Gav Thorpe just has a very different idea of what the Dark Angels should be about than I do - I like his writing much better when he’s writing about literally anything other than the ridiculous time travelling Nurgle corruption plot he’s contrived around the First Legion and, as I’ve mentioned before, he’s done Merir Astelan dirty and I don’t much care for it.
I’m legitimately mystified a to why Graham McNeill would so thoroughly undermine his own work - except, maybe, that the big twist ending of Fulgrim was dumb and didn’t fit the narrative but, sure, retcon that so you can have snake daddy Fulgrim indulge all his evil vices as a willing servant of Slaanesh. What’s pathos, anyway?
Ferrus’ story was equal parts pointless and frustrating, both due to it being such a forgone conclusion; and rather than reinforce the tragedy of his death by making him a likable, the always verbose Nick Kyme doubles down on the Iron Hands Primarch’s characterization as an entire bag of tools.
The only bright spot was some decently well written bolter porn in Mr. Omegon’s Wild Ride, which moved briskly and never became tiresome - and it’s fun, after Legion and Deliverance Lost, to see that the Alpha Legion can do some regular Marine stuff too - but the whole “we don’t even know whose side we’re on!” gimmick grates on me.
And that’s all that I have to say about that.

The Emperor’s Dream
Massive spoiler for First Lord of the Imperium right out of the gates.
“He was not the Emperor until He met me.”
Malcador has no reason to be lying. Moreover, while he doesn’t have a problem lying, lying to aggrandise himself is not really his style. The thing is, inspiring not-the-Emperor to become the Emperor isn’t really his style either. After all, that’s all very future-centric, and Malcador keeps saying that his obsession is the past, while the future is the Emperor’s.
I suspect Malcador met not-the-Emperor and tried to teach Him a very different lesson than what He did, in fact, take away. The Sigillites were known to the First Legion, yet Malcador is the last despite being somehow involved with the beginning of the Emperor being the Emperor. If the order gradually dwindled to nothing, is there any reason Astelan would mention them as powerful psykers during the Unification War? If the order was abolished or exterminated, why would Malcador let that happen? He could have left and helped the Emperor destroy the rest,of course, but that doesn’t ring true since he still takes their mission statement seriously and styles himself ‘the Sigillite’. I think he was horrified at first by what he had inadvertently inspired the Emperor to do and only later, when he realised that the Emperor’s insane plan might actually work, signed on.
I definitely didn’t just come up with this theory to make my fic The Silence of the Sigillites still fit in the timeline though.

Utterly Unimportant History of the Gisalic-Liuva Empire
Cinareth Gisalic founded the Gisalic empire and had two children by different lovers: Nyfain and Elidir.
When Cinareth died at 48, Nyfain became empress. With her husband, Urien, she had three children: Owein, Arddun, and Ryth.
Her brother, Elidir, married Dwya and had two children: Melis and Verica.
Rather than choose her successor, Nyfain posed a contest for her children. While Owein did strive, her efforts were easily eclipsed by her youngest brother's. Melis, upset that Ryth was seemingly going to take control without a serious opponent, decided to participate in the contest as well.
When Nyfain died at 56 before choosing her successor, this sparked a war between those who supported Ryth and those who supported Melis. This is known as the Blood War and it lasted for approximately 43 years of intermittent bloodshed.
During this time, Ryth and Melis each ruled their own factions. Ryth married Helia and had three children: Valia, Cein, and Bryc. His heir was Cein who married Tanora and had one child: Rian.
Meanwhile, Melis married Ennar and also had three children: Beremund, Eurich, and Amal. Her heir was Amal who married Cunoarda. Amal had one child: Umyra.
Ultimately, Umyra won the Blood War and the empire continued under her branch of the family. The empire's name changed, however, from the Gisalic to the Liuva empire.
Umyra married Edin and together they adopted two children: Oduulf and Eltha. Eltha became empress at 33 and stepped down after 20 years.
Eltha married Theodric and had two children: Agneta and Edulf. Edulf became emperor at 30 years old. Edulf impregnated a woman, Miriam, when he was 18, and had a son: Wilarich. He never married Miriam, but treated her as a beloved mistress. Ten years later, he married Alys and had a daughter: Matilda.
Edulf died before choosing his heir. Matilda was his trueborn child, but Wilarich was his firstborn.
This is known as the Bower War and lasted for 69 years. During this time, the empire was effectively split in two.
Wilarich married Sarra had a daughter: Ithica. Ithica never married, but did become pregnant once, giving birth to Adan. Adan married Elena of Nyfain's line (Rian's great x3 granddaughter). Adan and Elena had one daughter: Katerina.
Meanwhile, Matilda married Nico and had two children: Helisa and Milus. Helisa married Grimbald and had three children: Talia, Osmund, and Randulf.
During the war, Wilarich, Ithica, Adan, and Katerina ruled one half of the empire while Matilida, Helisa, and Talia ruled the other half.
Ultimately, though, Katerina reunited the empire and restored the original name: Gisalic Empire in honor of her mother. She married Cyrus and had three children: Maura (her heir), Felix, and Rosalia. She also enforced primogeniture to avoid future succession wars.
Maura married Geren and her heir was Tobias who became emperor at 23. Tobias married Amanda and his heir was Imogen. Power then passed from Imogen to her grandson, Edmund. And, from Edmund to his granddaughter, Gwendolen.
Gwendolen took over at 21 and was a very harsh empress. This led to a major uprising when she was 32. The war lasted 17 years and led to a new nation splitting off from the empire. This nation is Astelan, which is where the story is set (I told you this history was unimportant).
The war ended with Gwendolen's public execution and Enid taking over as empress. Enid is of Matilda's line and is Talia's great-great-granddaughter.
Enid's line ruled for several generations with the following leaders: Morgan, Gavin, Cai, Ranulf, Cateline, Elias, Warrick, and Alexander.
This point the Hidden Thorn war took place. Madelyn, a descendant of Gwendolen, led a coup against Alexander and seized control of the throne. Prior to her coup, Madelyn had hid her heritage and was Alexander's fiancee.
As a sign of her reign, Madelyn changed the empire name back to Liuva Empire, which it remains to current day.
Madelyn reigned for 60 years, passing power down to her granddaughter: Amyra.
342 more years passed. During that time, the empire did experience another succession war that led to three different nations operating independently for generations.
Then, the heirs of two of the three nations (Sofia and Malcolm) married and, together, conquered the third nation. They kept the name Liuva Empire.
Their grandson, Wieland, is the current emperor. Rosalind (the protagonist's aunt) is Wieland's bastard daughter.
The names of the five days of the week are named for major heroes in imperial history: Arrdun, Ennar, Umyra, Oduulf, and Ithica.
