Quick question: What are the Ashwins supposed to be the Gods of? According to the Vedas? There is so little information about them I could find.

Ashvins are commonly heralded as the physician gods of medicine. They are also heralded as "the best of charioteers" and solar deities, being the sons of Surya. They are sometimes called the Sun and Moon (very Mitra-Varuna coded). Their chariot is apparently a "three-columned triangular car", so a trichariot, per se.

They are very much golden retriever coded, and are friends with Ushas, so much so that they are asked to be worshipped together with her.

There are ancient oral traditions, still repeated by the elders of some of the more remote islands, which provide an explanation for the Maldives' atmosphere of lost prehistoric grandeur and for its strange ruins. These traditions speak of a mysterious people called the Redin, said to have built the hawittas, who were described to me by Naseema Mohamed, a scholar at the Maldives National Institute for Linguistic and Historical Research, as:

"Very tall. They were fair-skinned, and they had brown hair, blue eyes sometimes. And they were very, very good at sailing. So this story has been around in Maldives for many, many years, and there are certain places where they say the Redin camped here, and certain places which they say here the Redin were buried. But we don't really know how old or how long ago it happened."

During his series of research visits to the Maldives, Thor Heyerdahl collected and compiled Redin legends from all parts of the archipelago. He concludes that in the memory of the islanders the Redin were 'a former people with more than ordinary human capacities':

"The Redin came long before any other Maldivians. Between them and the present population other people had also come, but none were as potent as the Redin, and there were many of them. They not only used sail but also oars, and therefore moved with great speed at sea ..."

Such notions of humans with supernatural or even god-like powers flying swiftly across the sea in their boats with sails and oars is strangely reminiscent of the imagery of the Rig Veda ... concerning the Asvins - who are several times praised for having conducted a daring rescue in the depths of the Indian Ocean:

"Yea Asvins, as a dead man leaves his riches, Tugra left Bhujyu in the cloud of waters ... Ye brought him back in animated vessels ... Bhujyu ye bore ... to the sea's farther shore, the strand of ocean ... Ye wrought that hero exploit in the ocean which giveth no support, or hold, or station, what time ye carried Bhujyu to his dwelling borne in a ship with hundred oars, O Asvins."

Thor Heyerdahl makes a case that there is real history behind the Redin myth, that it is older than the date now confirmed by radiocarbon for the construction of the hawittas - which tradition nevertheless attributes to the Redin - and that the people it refers to probably originated in north-west India, the primary setting of the Rig Veda ... [at] the great marine dockyard of the Indus-Sarasvati civilization at Lothal [north-west India] ... cowrie shells from the Maldives (Cyprea Moneta) have been excavated amongst the ruins and are to be seen in the site museum ...

I love to see Ashwini getting some spotlight right now. Here’s a look into Buffy the Vampire Slayer, portrayed by Ashwini Sun Sarah Michelle Gellar I’ve had cooking for awhile <3 (Spoilers ahead!)

Ashwini nakshatra is the exaltation point of the Sun in Aries, ruled by Ketu. The Ashvin twins are the presiding deities of this nakshatra. The Ashvin’s rescue people and can also bring them back to life The twins are called “darkness slayers” (tamohánā, 3.39.3). They are also known as Nā́satyā (possibly 'saviors'). She literally sacrifices herself and is resurrected in the later part of the show.

Buffy is a “chosen one” and imbued with an ancestral current of supernatural power, crowning her with the title “Slayer”. While primarily dealing with vampires, she also slays every type of monster and demon from Hell. She is part of a spiritual lineage granting her heightened senses, instincts, strength, and a quick ability to heal (the Ashvins are the physicians and healers of the gods). Ketu is connected with the ancestors and past lives.

The lore around what a “slayer” really is gets a little bit convoluted, but a central plot line between the end of season 4 and most of season 5 is about Buffy digging deep into slayer heritage and where her powers come from. This plot line is rich with Ketu themes. After invoking the spirit to the First Slayer, it returns to haunt her and her friends in their dreams (12h energy, Ketu corresponds with the spirit world and is sometimes associated with the 12h). This dream intrusion is what inspires her to explore slayer history, and her own identity as one (Aries is identified with the 1st House of identity and self expression). The first slayer, Sineya, tells Buffy that her gift is “death”. Ketu is written all over that..

At the beginning of this journey, a human ignorant to originally being a spiritual essence is placed in Buffy’s care, sent to her by a collective of priests. She was originally a portal that a primordial being was attempting to incarnate through, until the priests granted her a human form. Buffy initiated her journey into exploring herself and then is entrusted with guarding and caring for a vulnerable person. This directly paralleled the Asvin twins as guardian deities and administers of medicine. Medicine is what makes a situation whole, the ingredients for equilibrium. This is the exact duty of the slayer, she’s placed between the human world and the spiritual (Ketu).

Buffy is quintessential Ashwini. Ashwini being the exaltation of the sun and the sun obliterates vampires is like an astrological tongue in cheek joke I canttt😭😭

And she clears everyone in the show. She will always be the SLAYER! Ashwinis, make some noise 😌❤️‍🔥

Language Learning Journey Update

It's been a while since I've been on Tumblr! In the months I've been away, I was focusing heavily on Persian and strengthening my skills in all areas of the language before I switch to a maintenance phase and pick up another language. During this time, I also got really into planning and journaling which has helped me better structure language learning in my schedule as well as reflect on how best to structure my time.

I certainly learned a lot from this time but the biggest takeaway for me is that my biggest pain point when learning a language is acquiring vocabulary. I tend to let it happen rather naturally (slowly) and while it's a valid method, it also leads me to stagnate and plateau. That's why, with the change in my language learning plans, I've also restructured my learning schedule (for, like, the millionth time).

Learning Two Languages Simultaneously

I was originally planning on (re)learning Korean after going through the intensive 3 months of Persian but recent developments in my professional life have pushed me to start learning Cantonese instead. My goal for Cantonese is mostly to reach a decent listening comprehension level and a basic speaking level.

Although I'm learning Cantonese from scratch, I feel that I still have a long way to go with Persian. I am not ready for a traditional maintenance phase, but I know I am close to burn out and have to dial it back. The schedule is structured around Persian and I fill the rest of the time I was using for Persian previously, for Cantonese.

ON/OFF Weeks System

This system was inspired by my need to find a different way to learn and focus on vocabulary while also avoiding burn out in Persian.

ON Weeks: These are weeks where I will be focusing on 1 skill in Persian in the mornings. For example, on Monday, I will be reading intensively (e.g., breaking down phrases, re-reading, translating, compiling vocabulary) for about 25 minutes. In the afternoons, I am working on getting exposure to Cantonese and learning the sound system.

OFF Weeks: These weeks involve only practicing the Persian vocabulary I accumulated during the ON weeks. I'll be re-reading them, defining or looking up words on Forvo, writing practice sentences, uploading them to HelloTalk, and correcting them. I also do some light, passive activities like listening while I clean something or reading for a few minutes without stopping to translate.

Off weeks don't really change much in the way of Cantonese. I will continue with my plan as is.

Maintenance languages: I do have to maintain French and Spanish, however, I am lucky that I interact with languages almost on a daily basis. When I foresee that a day may be void of one, I'll stack it with another hobby of mine (e.g., journaling in Spanish or reading in French).

Ashvins

The Ashvins (aka Asvins, Asvinau, or Asvini Kumaras) are two twin brothers of Hindu mythology, sons of the sun god Surya. They may also be referred to as the 'Horsemen' and are forever young, handsome, and athletic. They are considered the physicians of the gods. As twins, they represent a cosmic duality of ideas such as light and dark, healing and destruction. In many ways they are similar to the Dioskouroi (Castor and Pollux) of Greek and Roman mythology and may well have been based on historical figures, perhaps two rulers famous for their skills in battle and good deeds.

Surya & Samjna

The Ashvins appear in Vedic literature (1500 – 1000 BCE) as the twin sons of Surya the sun god or of the sky. Their mother is Samjna (Conscience), the daughter of Visvakarma. Unfortunately, Samjna became so tired of Surya's brilliant light that she one day gave him a handmaid, Chaya (Shade), and left him to live a life of reflection in the forests, transformed into a mare. Surya was not to be so easily deprived though and disguised as a stallion mated with Samjna. The resulting offspring were Revanta (chief of the Guhyakas) and the two twins. The twins are also considered the parents of Nakula and Sahadeva, the Pandu princes.

days 3 & 4 - sep 14/15

It was my grandpa’s birthday on Saturday, so we hosted him a lunch with all of his favorite food. Obviously I didn’t do much that day aside from eating a lot and then having a food coma.

I cleaned my room and put all of the mess away, it’s an habit that I really want to get into as I’ve always struggled with cleaning and organizing consistently without waiting for it to get really bad before doing anything.

The goddess in Hinduism and also in Judaism is a protective entity. The Upanishads explain Her as an advocate of women's rights and freedom from oppression. We could sure use Her help in Afghanistan, where all the men need to be eradicated for failure to act like human beings.

The Upanishads state the man in God called Purusha "the life spark" unifies with the female called Prakriti, or nature, in order to create the phenomenal world. Now this results in cavepeople that shit themselves if we don't work at it a little. The Upanishads say the humane nature is latent, and can only be brought out "naturally" through the tuning of the mind within the intellect.

Though it is not natural for us to build steel plants, or make cars, or put rubber tires on a combustion engine and drive all over the place, we have molded natural things using the genius of our minds in order to do it. We imagined the metal and rubber and technology into cars, roads for them to drive on and we expect the process to be error free.

The same thing with toilets and toilet paper, toiletries, farms eventually became fast food and five star restaurants. The State is the final horizon. We have yet to incorporate the womb of the mind to give birth to the State. We are willing to turn medicinal plants and substances into pharmaceuticals, but not willing to turn the scriptures into social order and human equity.

The many arms of the Goddess represent the power of the state to create a nice safe pleasant place to live. They also represent Her retribution when we allow people like Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin and the rest to walk all over us and do reprehensible things without care. We are still wiping our asses with pine cones when it comes to politics and the Upanishad says no way.
