100 Episodes and Beyond: The Legacy of âStation 19â
What weâll always take away from the landmark series even after it fades to black.
BYÂ MALCOLM VENABLEPUBLISHED:Â APR 10, 2024
Station 19 is ending, sadly, but when it does make its final farewell this year, Shondalandâs ABC series will leave behind more than teary eyes and a legion of loyal fans not ready to say goodbye. Though on the surface Station 19 functions as a standard emergency services/rescue drama, it has so much more going on underneath its fireproof exterior. For seven seasons now, the Greyâs Anatomy spin-off has become a landmark TV show in its own right, leaving behind a lasting legacy.
On a recent visit to the Station 19 set, where Shondaland was on hand to celebrate the momentous achievement of Station 19 finishing its 100th episode, which airs Thursday, April 11, we caught up with its beloved stars to probe what the show means â and talk about some of the ways the show will live on forever.
First-responder life
Perhaps the biggest and most important legacy of Station 19 is the way it reveals the struggles, sacrifices, and everyday heroism of first responders. Statistics show that Americans make roughly 240 million 911 calls a year â thatâs more than 600,000 emergency calls per day. If weâre lucky, weâll never have to make such a call, making it easy to forget that on the other end of that line are real people who get up every day and put their own needs and lives aside to help us when weâre having the worst day ever.
Through all kinds of calamities, disasters, and unthinkable emergencies â gas leaks and bombs, medical scares and car crashes, and of course, fires â weâve seen these fictional characters mirror the courage and heroism real first responders exhibit every day. âI think Station,â executive producer and co-showrunner Peter Paige says, âhas this magical formula of great action, incredible characters, incredible human stories that model a better way to be in the world.â Amen to that!
Mental health
The flip side of those incredible acts of service on Station 19 is the toll such a job takes. Sure, fires and rescue scenes make really good TV, but what has made Station 19 so impactful is the way it shows the human cost of such work. The death of Rigo (played by Rigo Sanchez) in season three is a good example: The subsequent group therapy sessions, where Andy Herrera (Jaina Lee Ortiz) and the team confront their grief and loss, illustrated how the job doesnât exist in a vacuum and even the worldâs toughest people feel emotional pain. âThe relationships and circumstances really resonate with the audience,â Ortiz says. âThey cry with us and grieve with us.â
Representation
âI feel like we have a lot of good representation,â says Zoanne Clack, co-showrunner and executive producer. âA lot of people who donât see themselves represented usually on network television see themselves on our show.â She couldnât be more correct. Station 19 has been trailblazing for the way it depicts a number of underrepresented groups â most notably Latinos, who are vastly underrepresented on television â in lead roles, with Pruitt Herrera (Miguel Sandoval) and Andy Herrera (Jaina Lee Ortiz) in particular as standout examples. Showing them as captains has been quietly revolutionary, helping to undo persistent stereotypes that have Latinx people in service jobs or as criminals. LGBTQ characters get a lot of shine on Station 19 too; we see characters like Carina (Stefania Spampinato) and Maya (Danielle Savre) living out their lives, and not being held up as perfect aspirational models but as everyday people dealing with work, relationships, parenting, and the like â just like so many LGBTQ people the world over.
Family
âI think everybody sees the family they grew up in and the family they created â good, bad, and ugly,â says Jason George, otherwise known as Dr. Ben Warren. Indeed, Station 19âs 100 powerful episodes give us unflinching glimpses into what it looks like to be a pea in a pod, so to speak, and navigate the dynamics of being in a forced cluster â particularly accepting and supporting other people even if, in the moment, youâd really rather not. From courtships to breakups, baby making, and confronting the finality to death, the Station 19 family have endured it all together, and viewers have gone through it all alongside them. And thatâs just one of the many reasons why its impact will stick inside the hearts of viewers for years to come.

"Why're you so upset today, what's wrong?" You asked your boyfriend as the two of you walked to his house.
It was pretty chilly, the sun setting and the warm breeze was fading into a more chilled one.
"It's the same thing that's been bugging me all week, Y/n." He said more forcefully than he wanted, he immediately regretted his tone. You didn't deserve that, you were just asking him a simple question.
"Ok I understand why you're so irritated, but you don't have to take that out on me. I'm just trying to help." You say calmly.
He sighs. "I know, I'm sorry. I didn't mean for it to come out so rudely." He squeezes your hand. "What I meant to say was, Iwaizumi and I are still arguing and it's really bugging me."
You nodded, 'that's better'. "And I'm sorry you're still having your petty fight with him."
"It wasn't petty to begin with, we were actually arguing about something... I forgot what it even was about, now we're both being petty." Tooru exhales, talking about it is helping a little, but he'd much rather make up with his best friend instead of just talking about it.
"Did he forget?" You asked, kicking a rock in front of you.
"I don't know."
"You won't solve anything by talking to me, I think you should text him." You suggest.
"Me? Text first? Apologize first?" He laughs. "Do you even know me?"
"You always apologize to me first when we argue."
"Yeah but that's you, I'm even more stubborn with my friends, and technically it's not just my fault." He reasons, or at least he tries to. "Earlier today when we were heading to the gym, he was in front of me and instead of opening the door for the both of us, he shuts it behind him so I have to re-open it."
"And what'd you do back?"
"Ouch, you think I'd do something to get back at him?" He smirks.
"Tooru, we both know of it were in your favor, you'd petition to get him kicked off. You're so petty."
"Damn right I'm pretty." He smiles forward.
"I said petty." You deadpan.
"When he was distracted, I untied his shoes so he'd have to re-tie them." He confesses.
"I knew it." You laugh. "This is so stupid, go make up with him, why're you here with me."
"Because I love you." He dragged out the last word, now leaning his weight on you. You push him off of you, he was too tall for his own good and he was heavy.
"At some point today while I'm over, I want you to text him. This is stupid to be arguing for this long when you both forgot what it's even about." You squeeze his hand. He nods.
"It's our date night, let's not talk about this anymore." He kisses your hand that was linked with his, not wanting to stress you out with his own problems.
You mutter a response back, approaching his door. You waited for him to open the door, he allows you to slip in first, taking off your shoes and placing your bag by the door.
"Well what's for date night?" You excitedly ask, stars practically in your eyes.
"Hold on, baby." He chuckles. "Let me take a quick shower, entertain yourself in my room, we still haven't finished that puzzle from last date night." He led you to his room.
The 1000 piece puzzle sat in a corner of his room, waiting to be finished. The two of you fell asleep before you could finish and it remained there because the two of you were occupied with school and clubs.
Fridays were your date nights, he made sure to put you first in the mix of all of responsibilities, he's yet to fail on missing a date.
You sat in the corner, choosing to finish the border first, even though Tooru insisted to just start randomly, he said it didn't matter where you started.
The pieces that once looked like they were all the same, now started to form a picture, he hid the box from you so you wouldn't see it, but from the looks of it, it's a beach sunset.
"Any progress?" He emerges from the bathroom, steam entering the room and slowly fading, he was shirtless, going to his drawer to pick out a sweatshirt.
You hum, "I work a lot better without you hovering over me."
"That's me showing you I love you." He laughs.
"Well, show me you love me and do the puzzle." You grin.
He shakes his head lightly, his hair still damp from his shower, he smelled like the ocean mixed with clean linen.
Oikawa peeped outside and checked his watch, he deemed it the perfect time to start date night, which he still hasn't told you what it is.
"Ready? You might want to borrow a sweatshirt, it'll get kinda cold." He says, throwing you your favorite one of his, he just wore it too so it smells just like him. "I left a bag of stuff in the pantry downstairs, I'll meet you down there, yeah?"
You nod and he gives you a quick kiss on the lips, watching as you headed downstairs, a small jump in your step. Butterflies swarmed in his stomach, you're so cute.
He grabs a few last things, his phone, blankets, bug spray, and his speaker. He too now went downstairs.
"Wait here." He says to you as he passes you in the kitchen, the bag of goodies in hand, he enters his backyard and sets his things down.
He organized it so the two of you would be able to sit down in the two person chair, setting the speaker aside, playing both of your favorite songs.
"You can come out now." He chuckles, almost forgetting the most important thing. You.
"Bonfire?" You read his mind, he smiles widely.
"Is it okay?"
"More than okay. Thank you for making time for me." You kiss him, leaving him in a pile of mush as you sit down on the chair, putting the s'more supplies down. "Well? You gonna make the fire you outdoorsmen?" You tease.
"Yeah yeah, you're lucky I love you." He says, getting the pieces of wood situated, he also handed you the bug spray and you used it, you patiently waited for Tooru to finish so you could spray him too.
The two of you learned your lesson the last time you had a bonfire with some friends, even though the fire helped keep some mosquitos away, you still went back inside and woke up with itchy bites all over. It was very uncomfortable.
In no time the fire was started, he's gotten a lot better at this than the past times. Before he tried to burn wet wood.
"I almost forgot." He says remembering, running back inside after you sprayed him. The sliding door slams shut and his mother yells at him for it, he apologizes and meets up with you again. "My mom made your favorite."
"Really? I'll have to thank her later, that's so sweet." You say, taking the plate, he sat down beside you, covering the two of you in blankets, his arm around you.
You fed yourself and Tooru at the same time, his mom started adding more to the plate that was meant for you originally, but Tooru still continued to eat from it too, so she made it so the two of you could share now.
"Text him." You say breaking the silence.
"Already did, sent him a tiktok and he laughed at it, I think we're okay now. Thank you." He kisses your forehead, putting the plate down and bringing you in his lap so he could easily hug you.
"I love you, Tooru. This was really sweet, I'm not sure I'll top this for next date night." You chuckle.
"You always beat me, don't make me too upset or else I'll untie your shoes too." He kisses your cheek.
You laugh. "I feel bad, but I feel like Iwaizumi's reaction would've been so funny."
"The funniest, I wish I could take a picture to show you." He rocks the two of you. If he kept this up you'd be falling asleep in no time. Fridays were definitely your favorite day of the week.
Now you're brainstorming of ideas to beat Tooru next week, you know he won't really untie your shoes, or shut the door in your face if you manage to beat him. You're glad you were able to help him make up with his best friend, it's really been taking a toll on him.
It's very evident now because he has his head tucked in the crook of your neck, already asleep. You watch the fire slowly die out before before waking him up to get to bed before you're both eaten alive.
