bestie bestie beloved i listened to the song 'atlas hands' by benjamin francis leftwich and maybe it's just bc i saw atlas and immediately applied the song to him but idk i just think it really fits him? that sense of wanderlust intermingling with loss and the grief of a devastating adventure, 'i will remember your face cause i am still in love with that place' - conflicting thoughts because the journey 'killed' keika but now atlas is back safe and maybe there's a part of him that still aches for that which he doesn't know, or perhaps there's regret even that his own wanderlust involved keika to begin with. idk i feel like this might not fit but it's a very pretty song either way - @tbos-main
---
no because you're so right it's not even funny, when i first saw the title i went ''haha atlas'' and then i actually listened to it and i was like "oh this IS an atlas song-"
Take me to the docks, there's a ship without a name there And it is sailing to the middle of the sea The water there is deeper than anything you've ever seen Jump right in and swim until you're free
like the first verse is immediately Atlas deciding to go on the quest, stepping into the unknown with a smile, uncaring really of whatever he may face because he's finally soothing that itch under his skin that's always sung of adventure. And there's that idea of freedom, hiding that undercurrent of danger that I just think suits him and the story so well yknow??
I will remember your face 'Cause I am still in love with that place But when the stars are the only things we share Will you be there?
the chorus?? absolutely about him and Keika, and even subtly about Atlas' own guilt and feeling unworthy of having Keika in his life again
Money came like rain to your hands while you were waiting For that cold long promise to appear People in the churches started singing above their hands They say, "My God is a good God and He cares"
OKAY OKAY OKAY I LOVE THINKING ABOUT THIS VERSE IN REGARDS TO NOBODIES HERO BC THE GOD IN QUESTION IS PRINCE SASHA - so that first line just fits so fucking beautifully into the fact that Atlas and Co. are basically paid to keep quiet about what actually happened on the quest. Prince Sasha literally gives them hush money, and Atlas takes it because he doesn't know what else to do; and then that second line?
Atlas made a promise to himself that he'd get Keika home safe, and he failed in that, so he's just like. forever waiting for it, if that makes sense?? it makes sense to me
and then the last two lines are about the citizens of Prota and their near god-like worship of Prince Sasha bc of generations of propaganda and shit; and in the context of nobodies hero "my god is a good god and he cares" has this like twisted meaning, where it's both how people actually feel and it's the bitter sarcasm of keika mocking them for feeling that way?
I've got a plan, I've got an atlas in my hands I'm gonna turn when I listen to the lessons I've learned I've got a plan, I've got an atlas in my hands I'm gonna turn when I listen to the lessons I've learned
and basically this final verse is basically just Atlas' learning from his past mistakes, he knows what he's stepping into now when he decides to go on another adventure, he knows what might be waiting for him at the other end and this time he's not going to let it happen.

oh no i just had the saddest thought of little atlas going to the theatre and falling in love with the idea of adventure and making himself a little wooden sword that he carries around everywhere and his parents finding out and taking it away from him and throwing it into the fire because he's supposed to be focusing on your 'dust studies and your casting and physical combat is for guards and barbarians not the heir to the lavore estate.

i think i want the lavore's to be one of the oldest families on the continent and the only reason they're a nevmonesian noble house is bc they just Refused To Move. and then i think it would be funny if lhyr and morielle used to be one place, but when oveta used the river as the border to miednic they just split in half - so now there's the Miednic Lavore's and Nevmones Lavore's and they have a really petty fued going on

Atlas x Taylor Swift, courtesy of @tbos-main
dont be mad but.... i was listening to 'you're on your own kid' by taylor swift and it made me think of atlas DONT BE MAD. like the bridge bit specifically 'from sprinkler splashes to fireplace ashes i gave my blood, sweat and tears for this i hosted parties and starved my body like id be saved by a perfect kiss' as him before the quest when he's this nobleborn guy who's under so much pressure from his parents but he knows the flashy preppy lifestyle isnt at all for him and he wants to LEARN and have ADVENTURES not live a life that's been planned for him and then 'the jokes weren't funny i took the money my friends from home dont know what to say' for him when he comes BACK after the quest is done and keika is 'dead' and he's there with his reward and he's home but it's just not at all right and in his attempt to escape a life that was planned for him he inadvertently walked right into the preordained destiny that was written and thrust upon him centuries ago BUT THEN 'i looked around in a blood-soaked gown and i saw something they cant take away cause there were pages turned with the bridges burned everything you lose is a step you take so make the friendship bracelets take a moment and taste it you've got no reason to be afraid' MAYBE THE REAL HIGH-STAKES FANTASY QUEST WAS THE FOUND FAMILY WE MADE ALONG THE WAY MAYBE HE'S GONNA SPIT IN DESTINY AND HIS PARENT'S FACE DESPITE IT ALL 'you're on your own kid yeah you can face this you're on your own kid you always have been'

Atlas Lavore
in the simplest terms: Atlas is the man who is going to save the world. He is the hero of the story, the leader of the quest, destiny's bitch.
He was raised in a noble family, by stiff and absent parents who neglected his emotional needs and were never very physically affectionate with him. He was the only child they had, and therefore their only heir and they were like. really weird about it??
wait- okay, so, the nobility ranks in this world work a little weird because of the gods so because Ako (learning, education, teaching, knowledge) is one of the Up There gods, good educators and scholars tend to be very high up on the nobility food chain, and Atlas' family are alchemists!
It's a magical trait that had been born into the family like a thousand years ago - (*checks notes* wow so interesting how that was around the same time the royal family was stripped of magic and atlas' destiny was written, wild, wonder what that could mean) - and then just Stuck Around so now there's an alchemist based caster in every generation who then goes on to teach at the university (big deal, makes you v important.)
So you can imagine the pressure Atlas grew up with, the expectations that he carried around with him everywhere.
And yet.
Atlas looks at the world as something to be loved, be embraced, to be seen. He's an optimist and is always ready with a kind word and a warm hug, he never lets anyone feel unloved or unwanted. He's hopeful, and kind - the kind of person that makes you think "there is bravery in being soft".
(not to say he is soft, bc atlas will kill a man with his bare hands and then turn around with a bright smile and ask if everyone else is okay, and he wont feel remorse for it if he genuinely thinks it was something that needed to be done.)
He became the person he needed when he was growing up.
He's also always been adventurous kid, climbing shit, and sneaking out, and attending festivals with Cecily. He always wanted more, wanted to see beyond the city walls and experience the world. (So, you can imagine his disappointment when he wound up as an teaching assistant for alchemy at the university, instead of attending classes where he would get to learn other stuff.)
So yeah! Atlas is the hero and he is basically the sunny skies to Keikas storms; the sun to his moon, the laugh to his sullen silence, the hands tugging at his face to force his frown upside down-
His destiny had been written in Vietua's constellations long before his parents were born, and the threads of fate run through his veins like puppet strings and will continue to do so until he finishes what Vietua has planned for him.
Then he'll be free to make his own decisions.
(Well, all of that would be true in a world without Keika, because i am a SLUT for romances that spit in the face of destiny and carve their own paths.) (and technically destiny does sink it's claws back into him-)
AND THEN!
Upset in the palace.
The Prince releases a royal statement of sorts that there's an organisation attempting to find and revive the last dragon alive. which would be terrible, so hes going to reward anyone who can find the dragon and/or stop the people behind it.
And so the threads of fate start tugging.
-
okay more just random information that i know about him
the man will eat ANYTHING (food related trauma from having his diet carefully monitored by strict parents?? maybe)
he's not afraid to get his hands dirty, and he loooves doing things himself
sometimes he does not know how much things cost though, bc he WAS raised in a noble family, so Cecily handles their coin (bc Ahria impulse buys weapons and cannot be trusted)
he's got his 5 4 keys for success locked down (confidence, getting along, organisation, resilience + persistence)
he has Really Good people skills (again: raised a noble)
he is excellent at fencing
he uses talismans and potions to direct and strengthen his magic, similar to the way keika uses a flute

i am thinking about ariad today.....just some. random fucking guy who happened to have a talent for potions. his best friend is an 8 year old. he falls in love and then gets betrayed. he meets the platonic love of his life when he's half-dead in the bleeding valley. he's allergic to pollen. he can't mould clay to save his life so thala puts him in charge of sales. he sucks at customer service. he witnesses the death of an entire race knowing that he's partially responsible. he can't ride a horse. he's so pretty he once caused a traffic incident. he has brutal nightmares. he sleeps half the day away. he's atlas's ancestor.

There hasn't been a dragon seen on the continent since the Splintering, a thousand years ago.
So, why then, are there three strangers standing in Keika's library at the end of the world, apparently on the search for one?
---
Nobodies Hero is a fantasy series that follows a librarian, Keika, as he strays from his destiny and follows the blood-soaked call of adventure against his every instinct demanding he turn back.
this blog is actually for the universe of nobodies hero as a whole, which contains several other stories including the splintering (a prequel) and side quests* such as the angelfish.
