Invincible S3 finale spoilers!

whatthefuckwhatthefuckwhattheFUCK… the way my jaw dropped when Mark started bashing him with his HEAD??? HE’S ON THE BRINK OF THE DEATH NOW??? I swear, S2 Mark looks very tame compared to S3, it’s actually crazy.

As for my thoughts on Conquest… it’s interesting how the Viltrum Empire, while placing an emphasis on strength, creates this culture of isolation where Viltrumites can’t even talk to each other without a factor of fear. It’s the type of empire that will eventually eat itself from the inside out because it’s a fact from recorded history that all empires fall eventually. As for what Conquest represents in that… he’s a killing machine, a weapon of war. The way the Viltrum Empire is constructed is extremely fascinating because it’s a look at how violence, oppression and eugenicism actually FAIL.

Also Eve is a bit broken in terms of power scaling but like. I guess even she can’t fully beat a Viltrumite warrior.

I haven’t read the comics btw, I don’t want spoilers but I’m just rambling on about my thoughts.

Of course, Anon! I'm so happy to hear that you're interested!

Adam's Quirk is called Phase Shift. Pre-awakening, it allows him to change the state of any matter he touches, such as turning a liquid into a solid or a solid into a gas, etc etc. One of his trademark moves is solidifying the air around him, which he uses to create solid walls of air or stepping stones to allow him to walk on air, in a sense.

Post-awakening, his Quirk not only alters the bonds between molecules, but the bonds between atoms and subatomic particles. For example, he could manually take hydrogen gas and oxygen gas and make Hydrogen Peroxide, or knock an oxygen atom out of each molecule and create water. He has to be very precise, and his ability is dependent on his knowledge of chemistry. After his Quirk Awakening, one of his signature moves is to create a combustion reaction upon punching a villain (I mostly came up with this because the idea of him punching a villain and the spot exploding on impact was really cool to me).

Moving onto his support items; they actually work to counteract his Quirk. Adam is not immune to his own Quirk! From a young age, his messed with the molecules in his own body without his control. It was a very small disturbance at first, but as his Quirk developed the effect it had on him increased.

It began with his hands. At around 13-ish years old, his Quirk started to cause him pain as it attempted to change the phase of the matter in Adam's hands. That was when he got his first support items. I'm a little fuzzy on what these support items looked like exactly, but they resembled gloves with some tech woven into the fabric. They canceled out his Quirk in small doses.

These support items worked for a while, but at 16-ish years old he had to get new ones. This time, the pain had spread up to his arms. His next support items were similar to his last ones, but the sleeves extended up to his elbows.

Like the last ones, these didn't last very long. By 18, he needed new support items. His new support items were an experimental design meant to track brain activity and cancel his Quirk completely when he wasn't consciously making an effort to use his Quirk. Something so high-tech was incredibly expensive (and not covered by any sort of insurance, because support items are considered luxury items).

Thankfully for Adam, Avery, who had been saving money from doing sidekick work alongside going to a Hero University, paid for the new support items.

This iteration lasts quite a while! In fact, it stays with him until he becomes an actual Pro (not a sidekick) at 28~ years old. There were a few kinks in the software along the way, though---for example, sometimes the software would fail to accurately determine when Adam was or wasn't trying to use his Quirk, leading to moments during Sidekick work where he would have to fight Quirkless or moments in his daily life where he'd be in agonizing pain until his support items figured themselves out.

His last support items are the ones he has now! They're grey bands around his neck, biceps, wrists, thighs, and ankles. Much more compact and sleek than all that wiring. It's new tech, so instead of cancelling Adam's Quirk, it redirects his Quirk into keeping all of his molecules/atoms in place. It's much more effective than all the previous iterations.

Of course, his battle with his Quirk doesn't end there. His latest support items are new tech, but they're also as new as it gets for a while. So while he can go in and get them recalibrated every now and then to account for his Quirk overcoming them, it also means that there's a limit to those support items' effectiveness.

There's not much he can do after that, but he does get some painkillers (which my friends and I have dubbed Super Morphine) to deal with everything. He is my little guy and every day I put him in the torment nexus and blend blend blend.

Children and Love Teach Us Humanity – Not Mortality (spoilers for Terra and Anissa)

Saw some discourse about Eve’s immortality (she’s not immortal btw. She can just regenerate under specific conditions) desensitizing Mark from death and therefore from humanity, so I was inspired to write my own take on humanity in Invincible. I just don’t see humanity being defined by mortality at all because immortal/long living/alien characters live out humanity too. Whether it’s Nolan, Mark, Eve, Anissa or Immortal. They all find their humanity through family.

… buckle up. Another long one😞🥀

Nolan:

Nolan’s struggles to understand humanity and sees Earth as a conquest at first, but Debbie teaches him love’s value—something Viltrumite ideology never offered. This is shown in the baseball scene, where Debbie explains humanity to him as they watch Mark.

Nolan thinks of kids playing baseball – or, more specifically, playing family with Debbie and Mark when he could be conquering earth –  as a waste of time. But Debbie says that “our children remind us of what humanity is all about”. Nolan spends his next years pushing off the mission not knowing why until he almost kills Mark. He chose love over conquest and duty the moment he spared Mark.

Losing Debbie and Mark leaves his heart in a void so he adopts Oliver and remarries in an attempt to fill it.

Immortality isn’t what kept Nolan from humanity — it was the lack of love in his life. He needed Debbie and Mark to find humanity. Love is about protection, not conquest. He doesn’t need to be human to understand that; he just needs to reject the values an abusive culture forced upon him. He makes up by his attempt of conquest by protecting the Thraxans instead (I will be using protection as an antithesis for conquest to compare human and viltrumite ideals a lot in this.) Viltrumites weren’t born soulless. They’re all capable of love and feel lonely without it (see Conquest longing for what Mark and Eve have and confessing that his loneliness is due to him embodying everything the Viltrum empire’s ideals stand for.)

Mark (and Eve):

Mark is often put to the same dilemma of having to choose between duty and love, mirroring Nolan’s own struggle. But in his case, he already knows humanity and love. He is driven by protectiveness he feels for his loved ones. We do see that being the result of his wavering between Viltrumite ideals and human ideals a lot. Again, this mirrors Nolan’s own morality shifts caused by his love for his family.

Those Viltrumite ideals that try to rip Mark away from his humanity are about strength and conquest. We see that in Mark growing possessive over Eve, brutally killing Angstrom to protect Debbie and Oliver, killing Conquest after he hurts Eve, threatening Cecil’s life by showing he can overpower him and threatening to kill him if he touches anyone he cares about. A lot of Mark’s bad decisions stem from an obsessive need to make sure his people are safe.

His struggles with humanity don’t stem from immortality. He doesn’t fear that future. He tells Nolan he’ll still have him in 500 years because he loves him. And by the time Eve grows old, he was ready to say goodbye. Whether she lived or died, he still did have Terra; a product of their love. He would still have love in 500 years so he’d be okay.

Eve isn’t mortal like Debbie or Amber, but she still connects Mark to humanity through family, love, patience, understanding and empathy. She calls him out when he’s being selfish (Season 1 and in future events in the comics) and reassures him when he blames himself for things out of his control. A lot of Mark and Eve’s arc is still unfolding and being rewritten for the show, so I won’t talk about them much more here because I am relying more on the show for analysis. But Terra and Eve do often serve as a reminder for Mark to fight against Viltrumite ideals when Mark is being led astray.

Their daughter’s name, Terra—their little piece of Earth even when they’re in space—symbolizes Mark and Eve’s love and humanity. Again, this really shows that humanity isn’t defined by how long someone’s lifespan is compared to humans.

There Is No "One True Love"

The series rejects the idea that a single romantic relationship "saves" Mark. His humanity is shaped by all his bonds: Debbie’s nurturing, Eve’s partnership, and by Amber’s morality. And by his love for Nolan and Oliver. Alternate universes prove this—Other Marks turn evil/turn to Viltrumite ideals without the right influences from Nolan and Debbie. Likely Eve too. (Some of the backstories for the other Marks aren’t clear, but those 3 characters are always around Mark unless they’re dead; this is confirmed by Angstrom in the comics). Love isn’t a magical fix; it’s a collective force.

I personally think it’s beautiful symbolism to have Eve and Terra be there for Mark all his life. It answers the “what will you have in 500 years question”: It’s corny, but Mark will still have the family he fought so hard to protect. He still has love. Unlike other Viltrumites, like Conquest, who are alone and miserable. Having children really serves to break a cycle for Viltrumites. Mark, Nolan, Anissa, and all Viltrumites who choose love and nurturing kids are promoting human ideals and ending a cycle of hatred within Viltrumite culture (I hated including Anissa here. Marky is born from hatred, but she does switch up after he’s born.).

You could see Eve living beside Mark forever as unnecessary because he already has love in Terra. But whether or not she lives, the answer to the 500-year question is still the same: Mark will have love and his family. Mark will treasure Terra and Eve whether they live long lives or not. Terra is non-negotiable though.

Having Eve as a partner doesn’t just tie up Mark’s 500-year question but also ties Eve’s family arc off by giving her a family that actually loves and appreciates her.

I do enjoy Eve being by Mark’s side forever at the end simply because they’re doomed in every other universe. But in this one universe they choose to love and protect each other and work through their issues together, and it finally allows them to have a happy ending. Would be kinda sad to just snatch Eve away again in the end. But that’s my preference only.

Anissa:

Anissa’s arc is the worst reflection of Viltrumite ideology. She r*pes Mark to repopulate the empire—an act of conquest; she’s stronger, so she thinks she’s in the right to do something like that to a weaker person—but unexpectedly, she grows to love Marky. This isn’t about duty; it’s a genuine shift in morality. (I won’t get into her redemption arc too much. It deserves a separate analysis because it’s a very delicate subject and I find some decisions with its execution… interesting.) Even in brutality, love disrupts Viltrumite societal inhumanity. Anissa changes because of Marky. Much like Nolan changed because of Mark. Much like Mark got his shit together because of Terra.

To conclude this long yap sesh:

Invincible argues that humanity isn’t inherited; it’s taught, often through love and loss. Strength and immortality mean nothing without connection. Love and humanity root us, no matter where we are or what we are or who we were born as. Love—imperfect, messy, and enduring—is what makes us human.

Viltrumites are human at their core too. That’s why humans are the best people for them to reproduce with. We’re all born with empathy and love, but Viltrumites stopped having children and loving due to their corrupted societal ideals and they’re so old that they’ve forgotten they were once children who had nothing but innocence and love in them too. That’s why the Viltrum Empire is failing and dwindling in numbers; they need love for survival just like humans do. That’s why people like Anissa and Nolan only live fulfilling lives once they start loving and having children.

Their children had to teach them to love again, because children aren’t corrupted by hate like so many adults are. Mark goes through some corruption too before having Terra and then he lives to protect her.

Side note: That doesn’t mean Invincible’s writing is without flaws, but I can’t tackle every issue and every analysis in one post.

The thing with Atom is that it is entirely committed to returning the favor you did for them so long ago, like they said, "their kind answer action in spades."

And if that means providing every single whim your human heart desired, this could translate to offering both gifts and acts of service.

It is devoting it's entire being to that task (literally!) while you're staying on that ship.

You name it, Atom will become it!!

Nothing makes it happier than to pamper you like they strongly believe you should be for being their silver lining in darkness, their luna nova.

If Atom had the vocabulary to gush about you I would add words of affirmation here too. Alas, they only have themselves to give and hope you understand just how devoted they were to you for the rest of their life without saying it outright.

When it's on the receiving end; Physical Touch 🫂💕

Boy, where do I start! Touchstarved lads you're in for a treat.

It can't can't can't get the feeling of your gloves enclosing it so gently all those months ago out of its mindddd.

They wish to replicate that feeling by touching you anytime they can. Absolutely fascinated with your hands, in complete awe these were the ones that brought it to safety. They are nuzzling against your palms as we speak!

It's fully aware most humans get the ick when it comes to touching worms so while they wish they could touch you directly, most of the time it'll stay inside the suit.

It can sense touch from any part of the suit, so their helmet, gloves, boots, soles even, anywhere really.

They go bonkers for a headpat, go insane for a little peck on the glass of their helm. Hug them and they might implode.

If you're touch-averse, it'll try to respect it but they're gonna be vibrating from restrained effort the entire time sorry.

To the point if they're desperate, they'll just end up with tunnel vision on your presence at all times since they can feel through the ship, hyperfixating on the weight of your boots against the metal grating if they have to, literally worshipping you at your feet.

Overall their favorite activity is cuddling for sure and if you reciprocate, you'll find that they are very compact and huggable, 10/10.

In my deranged moments I've always wondered what it's like to hug the Michelin man and I think hugging Atom will feel similar.

invincible is ruining my life and i don't want it to stop.

i just finished binging season one and i am genuinely flabbergasted. this show is amazing. this show is so well-written. the animation is beautiful and every single one of the characters is memorable and strong. omni-man is probably one of the most incredibly complex characters i've seen in media and every hero is nuanced and human.

i'm about to watch the atom eve special and after that, watch all of season two. wish me luck
