Recently i finished watching Atomic Puppet series and i want to talk about it some because i had a lot of fun with it.
The series is Canadian-French and it aired back on 2016-2017 on Disney XD and it was short lived, having 26 episodes with two 11 minutes segments each per episode.
The premise of this show is fun and interesting as it is about a famous superhero named Captain Atomic who suddenly finds himself turned into a small puppet without powers by his previous sidekick, Mookie. Atomic (also called A.P.) somehow learns that he is able to use his powers but only if he teams with Joey, a kid who is a huge fan of superheroes, and together they become Atomic Puppet. It is kinda ¨What if Superman turned into a toy and a kid found him and was able to use his powers¨ idea.
In a lot of ways Atomic Puppet series acts as a parody of superhero genre like the way the heroes often interact with the villains or the recurrent gag of the enemies getting thrown into the sun in almost every other episode. It isn't meant to be taken that seriously a good part of the time.
However, i would argue that in is meant to be a deconstruction of superhero tropes to an extent. The biggest point of this would be how A.P./Captain Atomic gets potrayed as character and how he acted before he was turned into a puppet: While he saved other people using his superpowers, he was very egocentric and inconsiderate and it later gets revealed that he could treat some of his allies very poorly, mainly that being his sidekick, Mookie.
As previously mentioned, this sidekick acts as main antagonist through the show and was the one who turned A.P into puppet in part because of how badly Atomic treated him. In this case the superhero character is the one that ended up creating its own enemy thanks to his own huge ego and acting in anti-heroic ways- him losing his powers is used as a vehicle for him to be taught a lesson and getting a bit of ¨redemption arc¨ in the series.
Mookie also deconstructs the trope of ¨incompetent sidekick¨ by having him snap for always feeling like he is in Atomic's shadow, hating how others laugh at his failures and getting back at Atomic for his behaviour. He becomes more of a threat in the show until he embraces the role of a villain later on.
Now, the show has a lot of things like humor, supehero tropes and action but i think at its core is about A.P. and Joey's relationship and how it changes over time. Since they both need each other to be Atomic Puppet, it does makes sense that the show is about their dynamic.
A.P. and Joey are foils of each other in how where as AP acts egocentric and self-centred, Joey is down to Earth and remains humble. And while they both learn from each other, it is A.P. who mainly gets influenced by Joey's more kind and empathic nature. What the series does right is that, in spite of the two having somewhat clashing personalities, they usually get along and in plenty of episodes they are seen hanging out and having fun together. You would expect for A.P. to be a very uptight character who hates having fun but he in fact does often joins Joey in his kid ideas, in occasions using their super powers for the sake of it.
While a lot of what we see in the show is through Joey's perspective- as he takes A.P with him wherever he goes- i would say that A.P. is the main first protagonist of the show as a lot of it is about him trying accept his new status quo and struggling to adjust at the same time he learns to be more considerate of others and let his pride aside when he needs help.
Something i appreciate about the way that A.P. is written is that is understandable why he is seen being grumpy and bad-tempered a good part of the time. He lost his all his powers and he feels small and useless without them. He lost his status as superhero of megacity and nobody outside a few characters know that he used to be Captain Atomic. It explains well why he is prone to feeling down or being insecure of how he is now.
An aspect that separates A.P. from others of characters of his type is that he is open about when he considers someone a friend of his and doesn't feel the need to hide it from them. He is okay with expressing that he really values Joey as sidekick/team partner in front of others. There is a whole episode he meets with a friend he hasn't seen in a long time and they hang out a lot in the same day to catch up. I found this to be a bit refreshing for his character as i thought he was going to be a lot more cold when it came to his relationships with others.
Outside of AP and Joey, the series has other good characters like Joey's family, specially Joey's father. I do like how there are episodes that explore Joey's relationship with them. There are supeheroes that show up in a few episodes, which are fun on their own. A good percentage of the villains are entertaining, some more than others. It helps that they have a bit of an arc and things that happen in one episode can get brought up later on.
The series does a good job in continuity and arcs with the short episodes it has, gags and elements introduced in one episode get brought up in later episodes. This makes most of them worth of watching as they add something to the characters or the worldbuilding. The final episode from the first (and only) season manages to give a decent conclusion to everything that had been set up so far until that point. There is a small cliffhanger that was intended to hint for things to come in Season 2, sadly the series didn't get a new season after that.
On last point i want to highlight the animation for the show- the animation was done by Mercury Studios and the result is a good looking cartoon with entertaining action scenes and often expressive expressions, which surprises me because it does look better than other DTVA shows. I'm not sure why this series happened to have this level of animation but i do appreciate it.
I have more things to say about this show that i would prefer to save it for other posts. What makes me sad is that this series just needed another season to develop better some things like the backstory of the characters and expand on characters arcs and with that it would have been enough. It had the potential to do more but as it happens with many other shows it got cancelled to soon.

in English
Well as I said in my previous note I saw atomic puppet again and it gave me a bit of courage to get some of my ideas out when I was little I had drawn something like a next generation I had even written things for the series like I don't know comic history etc so I said a lot happened so let's post I don't lose anything
The 2 female characters that appear are the cavalier's daughter and the princess is called Cassandra
The other is Joey and Pauline's daughter named Josselyne

Thinking about what it might have looked like if rojhelio studios had made a no place like home sequel based on return to oz... obviously I don't know these people or what decisions they'd actually make so a lot of this is just my own vision but yeah
We open on Tom at the bar hitting on a mysterious woman played by Emily Grace Mehrer. She gets up and walks out and he follows her (not in an overtly creepy way; she seems to be beckoning him to follow) but in his drunken stupor ends up falling in a lake
In this version the disaster that's befallen oz is just straight-up an atomic bomb. He goes to the bowling alley looking for his friends (it's been long enough that it's ridiculous to expect them to still be at the bowling alley but he doesn't have any other leads) and finds the robot and lion's silhouettes blasted onto the wall of the desiccated building. Idk if they'd still be restored at the end or not honestly. It's kind of fucked
Given that nplh doesn't have a Toto analogue I'm not sure if there'd be a Billina analogue here, but since Billina talks I'm gonna say that's grounds for inclusion. Instead of a chicken I think she'd be a seagull or pigeon (possibly even a crow if you wanna get crazy with scarecrow associations) and she'd be played by Alora Kitsberg holding up a bird puppet like Joey Richter in Perky's Buds
The wheelers are just punks on motorcycles and they shout slurs like Max's munchkin character in nplh. The nomes are just people wearing camouflage to blend in with the rocks
Depending on the exact year, I imagine the main joke with Tik-Tok would be the Ke$ha song. Instead of the royal army he's the radio station and instead of winding up his thought/speech/action you've gotta adjust his bass and treble and whatnot. He's played by Kevin Forti (which yeah would make both the metallic characters played by guys named kevin but that's not Why I've chosen him)
Mombi (original head) is played by Ming Doyle‼️ but when Tom first encounters her she's Emmy Cicierega. The witch's head from nplh cameos as one of the heads in her collection. She doesn't want Tom's head because she thinks he's ugly so she just throws him out a window into the dumpster
Jack is played by Jake Quilty-Dunn and he's waiting for his mother to come home after she walked out to buy cigarettes ten years ago. There's some cringe dated humour around him referring to Tom as his mother, which Tom obviously does not like
The Gump is just an old wrecked car that they staple a rotted corpse to. Idk if this would be a human or animal corpse (if it's the latter it would be portrayed by a puppet of course) but if there's a human actor involved it's either Julie Becker or T.J. O'Brien. Its tires get stuck in the snow when they reach the Nome king's hideout
There's a meta joke when Tom reunites with the scarecrow where he's like "Ugh you're uglier than I remember. Why'd I even want to come save you again?"
Calling back to an earlier point, when Ozma shows up and Jack recognizes her as his mom she's like "Oh shit... umm you guys didn't see me" and tries to run away. In the process she throws some object or other at Tom's head as a distraction, knocking him out. When he comes to in the real world, paramedics are using a defibrillator on him as he was just pulled out of the lake
The Nome king is played by Joe Botsch and his gimmick is being like a rock star (it's a stupid pun on them being made of rock) and he challenges Tom & co. to a battle of the bands. Everybody else tries and fails but when it's Tom's turn he just says fuck it and uses his guitar to bludgeon the Nome king to death

Are you okay?
Huh, I really liked drawing AP so depressed, and in the tiktok recommendations I came across a video with this sound and I think, «Well, this is AP and Joey.»
Idk why I like to imagine even the most cheerful characters upset, lol ':>

Okay, atomic puppet headcanons!
Headcanon for AP and Joey's dad: they both come up with different dad jokes that they make everytime its like them two alone :D
Headcanon for Joey and Pauline: they do skate practices all the time, and AP maybe sometimes goes with them (probably also experienced skating himself when he was...human.)
Headcanon for Princess Wartickle and AP: they are bitter exes :D
Headcanon for Princess Wartickle: she sometimes does pedicure in her free time as the sentence "You chipped my nail!" In one of the episodes where princess wartickle and AP switched bodies!
Headcanon for Princess Wartickle and Pauline: Joey takes Pauline sometimes in Princess Wartickle's dimension and occasional girl night and training! :DD
Also! This is bonus for my oc x canon! :D (AP x Maria)
Headcanon: they kind of met off in a bitter start but just get used to each other later on
more for part two!

i saw your reblog about my particular crossover art and the words, "AP Angst" and i have to say...
YES
FUCK YES I LOVE ANGST. Especially for AP himself and their Gimmick as a superhero together with Joey Felt. Can you imagine how it must feel, being stripped out of ur powers and almost ur career and life turning into a mere sock puppet? Good thing he paired up with Joey though and had at least almost all of his control back but Imagine the existential crisis he must be facing.
OK this has been sitting in my inbox WAY too long but im thinking about atomic puppet again so im gonna answer now!!
anyway hghggh yesss the angst potential... like its CANON that he hates it he complains constantly... hes coping but definitely not without side effects. AP has never heard of a healthy coping mechanism. bjghjg idk what else to say you hit the good points

There is an episode from Atomic Puppet that i have wanted to talk for a while now called ¨Pinched Nerves¨.
Atomic Puppet is series that in some ways doesn't take itself too seriously nor becomes too dramatic. There is an overall story arc through the season but overall it keeps a fun tone. However, there are a few occasions that an episode can have a more emotional or darker tone such it is the case of ¨Pinched Nerves¨
Tumblr media
¨Pinched Nerves¨ starts with Joey and AP chasing down a thief around the city at high speed. They chase him outside of the city, where there are some dangerous cliffs. Without realizing it, they accidentally crash into Joey's father while he is driving his car, who almost falls off the cliff but they save him in time before that happens.
This event leaves Joey very shocked, as he spends most of the night having nightmares about not being able to save his dad in time and him getting hurt, if not dying.
This is interesting to me because it explores the pressure it can bring to someone being a superhero, specially someone who is young like Joey- AP tells to Joey that it was a ¨simple mistake¨ but the problem is for Joey it wasn't only a mistake, he blames himself for his father almost getting hurt. It is a good contrast to how Joey is usually passionate about being a superhero and it is like a fantasy come true to him and it is all fun until situations like this force him to face that make him realize is there is more to it than it seems.
Tumblr media
Next morning and most of the rest of the day, Joey refuses to becomes Atomic Puppet and tells AP that he needs time to chill. AP is at first surprised by this, not understanding why Joey is acting like this- what he fails to see is that while he is very used to dealing with pressure from years of experience of being a superhero, something that Joey still lacks and he is more new to this type of world.
What is different from AP this time around is that he lets Joey to spend some time to ¨chill out¨ while he investigates the thief's plans on his own in Joey's room. It is a good example of character development from him since in the first episodes he would have been a lot less considerate about Joey not feeling well to go on patrol.
Tumblr media
We also get some nice scenes between Joey and Mr Felt spending time together as Mr Felt teaches Joey how to fix the roof. The episodes that explore their father-son relationship are enjoyable and this one does this pretty well.
Seeing that Joey still doesn't want to power up, AP decides to catch the thief for himself- again this is another interesting development for his character since he tries to be a hero even without having his superpowers, a lesson he has been learning through this season.
Joey notices that AP is missing and goes after him after checking the investigation board that AP made. The chase goes all around the city until the get on a train and the villain separates the wagons, with AP and Joey being partially separated as well.
Tumblr media
Joey feels like he can't transform because he is afraid of making a mistake, to which AP replies that he ¨is¨ making a mistake by not doing anything. AP then says that he understands this fear that Joey has of messing things up since it is a feeling he experiences himself quite often- but he doesn't let that stop him from using his powers because it is better than doing nothing.
At the end Joey chooses to become Atomic Puppet, stopping the loose wagon and catching the thief, sending him to jail. The two are later seen doing superhero stuff again at night, showing that Joey has taken into consideration what AP told him.
I think this episode is great because it explores the pressure that comes with being a superhero and things getting a bit too real for Joey that he needs a break from it all. While the series isn't super realistic I do like how this shows that Joey is still a kid and how this superhero action stuff can become too overwhelming for him in occasions.
