Last part for old GF sketches
(Actually, most of these aren't old at all, but their average is brought down by the last picture, which I drew back in August and kept forgetting to post)
#fanart#drawing#gravity falls#stanford pines#stanley pines#i wish more people talked about Ford's piano skills#and his shadow puppet skills#i forgot what i was thinking when i rushed these out#something about Ford only taking pride in his skills because of how other people (ie Stanley) appreciate them#and how he attributes everything exceptional about himself to his hands bc that's where his deepest insecurities/motivations come from#but that isn't something Stan or most people think about at all#but he also IS really talented#and so he gets this big fragile ego#stemming from his mother and brother's praise#but also filbrick's neglect#so it's like outside validation is a substitute/reminder of the people that really loved him#bht also he thinks he's different from them and better than them#but he does love them#and he likes making them proud because he likes seeing them happy#maybe he doesn't know how else to make people happy#something something#Stan being his biggest supporter is a double edged sword#because his opinion matters the most and then he's gone#and Ford doesnt have anyone to show off to anymore#OR anyone who can call him a showoff when he gets too into his own head#OR the person he was pitted against in the first place that made him feel special#because- knowingly or not- they always compared themselves#idk man#Ford is an interesting guy and his head fascinates me

I said sometime ago that Matar Paneer has a bird friend. Behold
To summarize, since I already explained before and don't want to bore anyone: Paneer found him in a tree as a little peachick, tragically orphaned after his family was attacked, killed and eaten in their nest by a predator. Not wanting him to be alone, she brought him back home and fought for him to stay, to which her parents eventually agreed (Paneer does not take "no" for an answer ever). Besides Pepper Jack, he's her best friend in the whole world and they're practically inseparable.
Extra bird factoids:
Obviously, his physical appearance is extremely abnormal. Instead of the typical green, his train/display feathers are a bold and impressive mixture of reds, oranges and yellows; nothing but warm, vibrant colors that almost make him look as though he's catching fire. Furthermore, and perhaps even more strangely, he seems to be made up of triangles: triangular "eye" patterns in his feathers, triangular markings underlining his eyes, triangular crest feathers, even triangular pupils... No one is certain why he looks like this; it's mostly been waved away as a bizarre phenotypic mutation
He is also abnormally intelligent. He appears to understand human/cookie speech and even responds when directly addressed/conversed with (as much as he can, being a peacock). He understands photos, he recognizes himself in mirrors, he's even demonstrated some problem-solving/critical thinking skills a few times. Extremely impressive for an animal (esp for a peacock, which are pretty dumb irl)
He sits at the table with the rest of the family during meals. His first night with them after being taken in, Paneer set him down next to her plate so he could reach the food (he was super smol), which her parents didn't like. They argued about it until Paneer grabbed Paravani + her food and sat down to eat on the floor in protest (Paravani is family, family sits at the table, if he can't sit there then she can't, either), after which they caved (MP is STUBBORN you have to understand) and let him sit. He sat on the table proper while he was a chick and got his own chair when he grew large enough
Paneer considers him her friend and her equal and does not take kindly to him being referred to/treated as a pet
He mimics Paneer's actions often. Like, if she tilts her head to one side, he'll do the exact same thing. It's cute
Paravani is very curious and adventurous in nature, and normally quite friendly/approachable unless you give him a reason not to be. Even then, he's slow to anger and usually becomes skittish instead; to truly anger him, you have to hurt Paneer, whom he is very protective of
As a chick, he would hide in Paneer's hair when he was scared
He does get along well with the rest of the family - but while he got on with Pepper Jack and Golden Cheese right away (bird people + he could sense their kind natures immediately), he was terrified of Burning Spice for quite some time (it's mostly because of how he looks. He looks like a predator to him). It took a while of Spice deliberately appearing docile/nonthreatening and the others insisting that Spice is nice for Paravani to overcome his reservations. Nowadays he's as fond of Spice as he is everyone else
As I mentioned here, Matar Paneer takes after Kartikeya, Hindu god of war and victory and Shiva's second son. Kartikeya is known for having a peacock as a mount, named Paravani. Keeping in line with this, not only did I give Paneer a peacock as a companion, but one day, her Paravani will grow big enough for her to sit and ride around on, just like Kartikeya's. No one knows why this happens, either. It freaks a lot of people out. Once again his unique features are written off as "mutations + lol Beast-Yeast creature")
Matar Paneer always blames herself for his family's deaths. She thinks that, if she'd found them in time, she could've fended off the predator and saved them, and Paravani wouldn't have been orphaned. Giving him a home and good company was the absolute least she could've done for him...
#Shadow Milk is dying to study Paravani and all of his wonderfully bizarre attributes...#...but so far he's only been allowed to look at him + keep a couple of his train feathers#SM is very self-absorbed and inconsiderate towards Paravani and there are fears he will harm him in the name of “understanding” him#BS threatened to kill him + PV if he touches that bird so now he sticks to observing him with his eyeballs#also. meta note. I kept his name as Paravani bc I couldn't think of a more “Cookie Run” sounding equivalent lol#and I ended up liking “Paravani”. it's a pretty name. so that's the name he'll always have. consider it an easter egg haha#cookie run kingdom#burningcheese#goldenspice#matar paneer cookie#can you tell i had fun with the colors? haha#my amateurish skills are really apparent here... moreso than ever before i think#I'm no good at animals. or shadows/lighting. or much of anything#sorry i suck guys I'll get better eventually#paravani

2014 FIFA World Cup Final | Maracanã Stadium | Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 13 July 2014

Let’s not allocate resources in places they won’t pay off
#my art#xioyun#hooray for baby Xioyun!#bro’s been taking hit after hit since he spawned#he was born solely to be another asset to his family legacy#since he didn’t have any skills or attributes his family found valuable he became nothing pretty much immediately#at best he could be married off politically to extend family influence#so why bother to teach him any more than strictly necessary for a nobleman?#oh well at least decades later xioyun’s struggling with the politics he chose rather than politics he was born into

Rin's reference is done! Many details are still a work in progress but the general idea is that she's an opportunistic trainer with a set of skills that make her well known on the other side of the law
The moniker "Slit Throat" currently gives her a reputation for being merciless among the world of pokemon hunters and thieves, but few know its origins were originally mocking in nature. Nonetheless, she uses it to her advantage to deter confrontation
Her Houndoom is her main battling partner who's capable of mega evolution and rarely matched in strength. However, she's best known for the breakneck speeds and maneuverability of her Staraptor. The two of them are extraordinarily fast in the air, in part due to Rin's diminished stature which often has her mistaken for a young man
In classic fashion, she also uses confusion over her age and gender to her advantage, going with whatever benefits her most in the situation
#pokemon#pkmn#pokemon oc#oc#pokemon trainer#pkmn oc#rin tag#my ocs#my art#digital art#ah the colors look different on my laptop vs iPad 〒▽〒#oh well. i can change the exact tones later if i want#rin being mistaken for a young man is 100% inspired by me getting called both “she” and “he” by strangers within a 20 minute period#she's very skilled and capable but she's also the jack sparrow of the pokemon world so don't expect TOO much#half her accomplishments can be attributed to a mixture of luck stupidity and an unfounded confidence

I have finished the book. It was not a very good book at all. My preliminary thoughts are as follows:
Prose is the best part about it but also one of the worst. Evocative and lovely language was used for what I can only describe as manipulating the reader. In a different book by a different writer, perhaps that would be the mark of a good unreliable narrator but this is not that kind of book and the writer, I fear, is not clever enough for that kind of narrative.
The characters - I do not think of them. Trapped as we are in Alcestis' head, she is a passive, dull thing who I do not know any better at the end of the book than I did at the start. I couldn't distinguish where her voice ended and where the author's began and it is through that haziness that all other characters are observed. Admetus is an objectively phenomenal husband but his kindness and regard is made bitter because he loves Apollo not her. Apollo is no more than a ghost haunting them both. Hippothoe and Phylomache exist as images of what Alcestis could be - a woman who dies of illness or children - and Heracles is awkward and small, quiet and passive in the way everything is in this book. Persephone and Hades are perhaps the only characters of some interest in here, but Persephone is a volatile mess of power masquerading as empowerment while Hades, like all the men in this book really, is small and passive and really only becomes worth something when out of Persephone's massive shadow.
The romance - What romance? There is no romance in this book. Alcestis imagines that what occurs between Admetus and Apollo is a romance but we do not get to see that story. The obvious regard and kindness Admetus holds for Alcestis would be romance in any other book - but in this it is described with so much apathy and loathing so as to make Admetus' actions seem unremarkable and lacking. As for Persephone and Alcestis; Alcestis wants nothing to do with her until Persephone forces her. She assaults her, like Hades assaulted her, while speaking the words of that tale into Alcestis' flesh while Alcestis rejects her and somehow this becomes the catalyst of their 'love'. There is no romance in this book.
The queer themes - I am not sure how one makes a story so easily given to a queer imagining biphobic, lesbophobic and not poly but it sure did that. Alcestis' ideas about love and sexuality and how it might possibly have different forms and fashions is unchanged from start to finish and homosexuality, for all that it is what she blames her ruined marriage on, is never explored past a few fleeting, derogatory descriptions and quickly brushed over allusions.
The Apollo Thing - Listen to me so carefully. Apollo is only in a single scene of this book. One single scene and it is the wedding scene where Admetus calls upon him to save them from the poisonouse snakes. Every other mention of him in this book is in passing, an offhanded mention of a person praying to a god, or with the underlying scorn and anger of a wife thinking of her husband's mistress. Apollo is not even there when Alcestis dies. He wasn't even responsible for Heracles eventually going down to the Underworld to retrieve her. If the author could've erased him from the wedding scene too, I'm sure she would've invented a way to do it. Apollo has no relationship with Alcestis, we do not get to see the nature of his relationship with Admetus and every other opportunity which existed to show him on their side was neatly and entirely erased. Thanatos, naturally, is completely absent from this novel.
In short, this was entirely unpleasant from essentially start to finish. I was very excited when I started this book and saw the quality of the prose and also the ambivalent character sketched of its gods but things went so rapidly and extremely downhill that I am left wondering how it was possibly flubbed that badly.
Regarding this book's feminism, I will dedicate a separate post to that entirely. To this book's credit, it did not have the superficial girlboss feminism that many of its contemporaries tend to champion but to its complete and utter detriment, the feminism it champions is perhaps the most insidious kind. The sort that excludes the disenfranchised, the impoverished and the normal woman. This book's feminism is for the privileged and the powerful and it is a deeply upsetting thing.
Lastly, I would like to thank @superkooku , @konu-d and @waterlinkedgirl for cheering me on through this absolute torment. I would not have finished this without them. Take that as you will.
If you are interested in the tale of Admetus and Alcestis or just want to read a retelling, I urge you to just read @reawakened-revenant (CiCiRose on ao3)'s God of the Golden Bow series. It is captivating, enthralling, impeccably researched and so utterly submersed in passion, love and care that it is breathtaking to read. It is a personal favourite of mine and the standard to which I hold all other Admetus and Alcestis retellings.
With all that done, I am going to stare at a wall and contemplate the horrors now. ✌🏾
#ginger review#Yeah I'm making a new tag for this because this is the last straw#I'm absolutely gonna pursue that reviewing fics and stories thing with this blog#if this shitass book is getting whole posts dedicated to it#actually phenomenal greek myth writing should get places as well#anyway this was miserable#Katherine Beutner I'm giving you a place of dishonour right next to Madeline Miller and Jennifer Saint#I need white American women to stop writing feminist greek myth retellings for a while#“Ginger Jennifer Saint is British” She writes like an American so she is getting put in their box#It doesn't matter how educated these women are - it doesn't fix the underlying fact that they all think they know better than the myths#these stories all REEK of wanting to prove themselves better than the poets of old#a certain “fine I'll do it myself” attitude that is only endearing if you have the chops to back it up#and frankly none of them do#Miller is fine as a writer - I'll be dead in the grave before I try to say that she's a bad writer#but the fundamental misunderstanding and lack of empathy in these books which are marketed as empathetic safe and inclusive#is absolutely fucking staggering#I cannot believe I have to say this but in an oppressive patriarchal system women do not CHOOSE to be oppressed#they ARE oppressed because all of society is constructed in such a way that they must always be lower than the men#the unfortunate reality of your birth can be compensated for if you are wealthy uncommonly talented uncommonly beautiful#or uncommonly educated but even then women still struggle and fight for their skills and talents to be recognised as equivalent to a man's#in ancient greece women were so low because they were seen as the opposite of a man#so every attribute that was seen as unmanly and therefore imperfect/inadequate was ascribed to women#that is why the worst/most shameful thing for a man to be was effeminate#if I have to read one more fucking retelling where the female protagonist simply chooses not to be oppressed anymore I am going to scream#All you're doing is showing that you have so much fucking privilege that you think feminism is as easy as a woman standing up and saying no#There are STILL countries today where women get killed for that#or where the masculine fear of being percieved as feminine is so powerful that it causes violence and death#I don't need to be told that feminism is easy if you're white rich and pretty by my books too#god fuck all of y'all I didn't even get to bitch about a shitty Apollo because he's NOT IN THE GODDAMN BOOK#the great retelling circle

for the life of me i cannot figure out why people are so desperate to apply a version of dean's facade to sam
#like... as someone with autism‚ wrt autism masks‚ they aren't black and white between what's presented vs what we feel...#not even dean's facade works like that. where is idea that what sam expressed isn't what he feels coming from?#like we get canonical evidence or exploration for what he feels in his actions very often in canon so??#and his emotional compartmentalising is very often presented in situations that are different from‚ say‚ his code switching#why are you so desperate to erase his canonical character exploration? like having headcanons in which what he feels and expresses#or what his actions are aren't what he feels at all kind of renders everything about him useless?#do you just have this hc to have the room to make stuff up about him? or what#the 'when the “loveable rogue” act Dean played didn't work out' line is crazy#because it's made me realise that this headcanon isn't about sam at all in a way that i cannot quite put my finger on#anyway the ways in which sam goes about attempting to be normal are explored in canon...#it isn't in terms of 'trying to mimic human behaviour' (please dissect why you think about him like this I BEGGGG)#it's canonically in terms of the hunting vs nuclear dichotomy. he doesn't want to to beat uo his bullies because kids his age#shouldn't have the skills he does !!!! he doesn't want to kill his first kiss because kids his age GET to have their first kiss#and not kill them. and this is interesting to me actually#his monstrosity hinders his idea of his normalcy and the hunting dichotomy of innocent vs monstrous is the structure#within which he both crosses that boundary to achieve normalcy but it's also why he cannot achieve it#the idea of its innateness that dean applied should he decide to do so. i feel like that's where this is working from#because it is just so strange that you attribute a facade with no canonical standing within a hc#to the monstrous boy as 'pretending to be normal' rather than trying and failing#while also stripping dean of his facade entirety to get to what you perceive as his entirely gooey insides within the same post#ludere

ithink something that 261 made many lose in terms of ness characterization is that he's not unaware of kaiser's nature. i think he would've been as attached to kaiser even if he befriended him without the intention to manipulate him
#like i have to be honest kaiser's first impression was not that of a nice person verbally but the acknowledgement of ness's skill#was enough for him to see magic in him and believe in him. i think that kaiser's intentions did play a part in shaping their relationship#into what it eventually became but i also think that to attribute that entirely to kaiser is giving him too much credit#and also flattens ness a bit ithink#masayapping

You know what, now that he's back I'm gonna say it:
For as good a Showman as he is, when it comes to his actual chosen profession of a show creator Mr. Puzzles actually kind of sucks.
-He can't handle when things go off-script even slightly, which is ironic considering his four greatest successes came from giving the crew (or a related character) a prompt and just sitting back and recording the fireworks.
-Everything always has to be about him, even when in-context it really shouldn't be.
-When he has full creative control over the crew he has NO UNIQUE IDEAS. Everything he makes is a blatant rip-off of another show that only gets elevated to affectionate parody thanks to the very cast that he chose explicitly because he believed they sucked and wanted a challenge.
-Speaking of which, he clearly doesn't know quality when he sees it and either severely underestimated them, overestimated himself, or both, because it took them less than ten minutes to match and surpass his precious Five Stars.
-The five stars that took him most of a movie to get AND, need I remind you, THEY EARNED FOR HIM UNINTENTIONALLY!!!!
-It's clear from his monologue at the end of today's episode (and the fact that the episode exists at all) that, despite claiming otherwise, he has learned nothing from his defeat.
#smg4#smg4 spoilers#mr puzzles#puzzlevision#mario the exploro#he should be on broadway but noooo he Had to get obsessed with network television and a random gmod animator#i know the puzzlevision episodes are good but i attribute that to the crew's acting skills. not mr puzzles' “creative” decisions and writin#i know once upon an smg4 wasn't ripping off anything specific like the others were#but i still count it since it's basically just a bunch of fairy tale tropes haphazardly stitched together and carried by the crew's comedy

the funny thing is that gender is making us all sick its poison in the water it separates people from having fully formed selves which is an important part of being a human being with a soul. and im saying that in the way that you can tell people drugs are addictive and have detrimental effects after significant long term usage while also believing people can do as many drugs as they want because youre not a cop
#i dont believe in masc essence or fem essence the way woo woo bitches talk about it but all of these traits segregated from one another#it means a net loss of potential for humanity#how many people dont even know the skills they could have obtained the joy they could have felt#from things they never even thought to inquire towards because why would you ever leave your corner#even when you dont believe in the most rigid forms of gender norms and sex dichotomy it doesnt matter#its in your head and you attribute your tendencies to it#my favorite food is cheese cuz its whats provided to me by my awesome handlers. and mice love cheese. cheese is What Mice Eat#is that a little bit pretentious to call people gender lab rats. whatever

okay so the SW ends up helping the Emperor's Hand, right? And let's just assume that the Emperor's Guard and the Emperor's Hand are in the same organization or whatever, and that organization also includes the Emperor's Wrath. Which means that the SW is now in that organization. And it doesn't seem like a huge stretch of the imagination that that organization probably has a pretty high level of clearance... so not just anyone gets to know mission details and stuff.
Which means that all the SW companions would need to also get clearance or whatever to keep coming on missions. And maybe one way to do that is to join the Guard. Which means... Malavai Quinn may have, in some universe, worn an Imperial Guard uniform...
#hmm that is cursed#but I attribute that more to my rubbish photo editing skills#at some point I'll probably go actually buy the outfit#low effort#malavai quinn#space ken#swtor

breakaway bitch
extremely important development! i SCORED ON A BREAKAWAY. i took the puck away from someone in our zone and then i got it past two defenders and i beat them all the way down the ice and took a shot and then i jammed in the rebound. and then i screamed at the top of my lungs. you can hear it on the livebarn video (which i have watched at least 15 times.)
#yes i do plan to do an individual post describing every goal i ever score what of it#this one was very satisfying bc it was a very me goal#attributable to my only hockey strengths: speed and tenacity#no need for any skills that i do not possess (such as puck handling or hockey sense or a halfway decent shot)#la on ice
