August Plant Care Guide: Tips for Roses, Tomatoes, Peppers, Cucumbers, and Sunflowers

Roses:

Deadhead faded blooms regularly to encourage new growth and continuous flowering.

Water deeply and regularly, especially during hot spells, to keep the roots hydrated.

Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plant to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Check for signs of pests or diseases and take appropriate measures to protect your roses.

Tomatoes:

Water consistently to keep the soil evenly moist and prevent cracking or blossom-end rot.

Provide support for the tomato plants with stakes or cages to prevent sprawling.

Remove suckers to direct the plant's energy into fruit production.

Monitor for pests like tomato hornworms and use organic pest control if needed.

Peppers:

Water regularly to prevent wilting and ensure even fruit development.

Apply a balanced fertilizer to promote healthy growth and fruit production.

Check for signs of pepper plant diseases, such as wilting or leaf spots, and take appropriate action.

Harvest peppers when they reach their desired size and color for the best flavor.

Cucumbers:

Provide support for the cucumber vines to climb and save space in the garden.

Water deeply to prevent bitterness and promote juicy, crisp cucumbers.

Harvest cucumbers regularly when they are young and tender to encourage more production.

Check for cucumber beetle infestations and use organic methods to control them.

Sunflowers:

Water sunflowers deeply during dry spells to support their tall growth.

Deadhead spent blooms to promote continuous flowering and prevent seed development.

【Tiny wedding party decoration September】

ammiさんのお料理は色鮮やかな楽しい雰囲気でありながら、木下さんのプロ意識の高いお仕事がammiらしい空間を作っています。私の場合は、毎日をただ過ごしてしまうようなルーティンにはまってしまった時に伺うと、世界に色や匂いや音があったことを思い出させてくれます。軽井沢で唯一の気のおけない友人となってくれた彼女が、思いがけないプロフェッショナルであったこと、このタイミングでこの地で根付くことに集中できていることが嬉しくてたまりません。

写真1-2枚目は人参のお花のブーケです。観賞用で仕入れた種で、食用のように根が太くはなりませんが、引き抜いた途端に一面に優雅な香りが舞って驚きました。切り花はいくらでも市場で仕入れられますし、その方が種類も豊富に、次々に新しく珍しいお花が手に入ります。けれど、私には畑で得られる実体験こそが魅力。「お野菜のお花です」とか「流通には乗っていないんです」とか。売り文句を目指せば早いのかもしれませんが、できるならば、単純に、そのものが魅力があることで成り立つ商いを目指したい。そのことの壁の高さに圧倒されつつも、すこしづつの前進を、支えてくれる人達と進んでいます。

I LOVE my garden dragonfly structure. I purchased it in April from another trader at the Floristry SW Association annual event 💙 We have had a very large Emperor dragonfly flitting about over the past few days as it did last year. 【Tiny wedding party decoration August】

軽井沢がもっとも魅力的なシーズンである８月９月。ご結婚祝いの小さなお食事会の装花などを続けて担当させていただきました。

この２年は農業研修のために切り花の活動はなしと思っていたのですが、大好きなcafe ammiの木下さんに直々にお声がけを頂いたことから、今年実験的に畑で育ててきた草花だけを使ってのアレンジメントが実現しました。

種取りだけで終わってしまう予定で、ただただ元気に咲いてくれていた花達の活躍の場を思いがけずいただくことになり、八月の庭の目指すところに自信を持てる機会となりました。きっかけをつくってくれた牧野夫妻にも感謝です。

＊cafe ammiさんは通常土日のみの営業になり、基本的にお一人で運営されています。本来貸し切りパーティーのプランはございませんのでご了承ください。
