Shakespeare Weekend!

This weekend we turn to one of Shakespeare’s tragedies, Othello, the twenty-seventh volume of the thirty-seven volume The Comedies Histories & Tragedies of William Shakespeare, published by the Limited Editions Club (LEC) from 1939-1940. Othello was likely written sometime between 1603 and 1604, first acted in November of 1604 at court in Whitehall for King James I, and was entered into the Register of the Stationers Company on October 6, 1621. It was first published in quarto by Thomas Walkley in 1622. The next year, the play was included among the plays in the First Folio.

This edition of Othello was illustrated by Irish author and artist Robert Gibbings (1889–1958). Gibbings was a founding member of the Society of Wood Engravers, ran the Golden Cockerel Press between 1924 and 1933, and was renowned as a major force in the twentieth century revival of wood engraving. He was drawn to illustrating Othello in its rich and textural Mediterranean setting and said of the frontispiece that he “tried to portray the quiet dignity of the Moor standing out against a picture in which are represented the chief events in his life.” Gibbings' wood engravings bring to life the action of Othello through stark contrast in lines and tones propelling the illustrations to pop off the page.

Of particular note to our copy of Othello is a friendly inscription from acclaimed actor Paul Robeson (1989 – 1976) “All best wishes. It was a swell afternoon”.  It seems that LEC member Austin Fredric Lutter hosted Robeson in some of his free time while in Milwaukee performing Othello during its 1944 run at the now defunct Davidson Theatre. 

The volume was printed in an edition of 1950 copies at the Press of A. Colish. Each of the LEC volumes of Shakespeare’s works are illustrated by a different artist, but the unifying factor is that all volumes were designed by famed book and type designer Bruce Rogers and edited by the British theatre professional and Shakespeare specialist Herbert Farjeon. Our copy is number 1113, the number for long-standing LEC member Austin Fredric Lutter of Waukesha, Wisconsin.

Mafia Virgin by Mila Finelli

The final installation of Mila's Kings of Italy series came out last week, and here is my review (and here are my excess notes). SPEAKING of Mila Finelli—

Fausto and Frankie Bonus Scene by Mila Finelli

If you would like some warm, mafia Christmas goodness with a side of chasing, Mila Finelli wrote a (free!) bonus scene set after Mafia Darling that I've linked above. It features gems such as Frankie fucking around with calling Fausto an old man repeatedly and finding out (which, to be clear, was her end goal), Fausto pondering on whether to tell the number of men he's killed with an axe when Frankie questions his ability to chop down a Christmas tree, and a visit from (then-failson mafioso, but forever a fave) Giulio.

Duke the Halls by Felicity Niven

The thing about Felicity Niven's historical romances is that they all start off relatively light, humorous even, but you inevitably find yourself swiping away tears as you read through the last few chapters. Duke the Halls is about a grumpy neurodivergent duke who finds himself enamored with a ladies companion he meets in a stagecoach. I adore Franny; she's earnest and upbeat and the very embodiment of holiday spirit without being naive (she's also a bit of a neologist). Kit, the duke, is more of an acquired taste but it's hilarious to read how gone he is for this woman right off the bat— to the point where he wishes he were a worse kisser so she could "practice" with him more, he admits he actually kinda does suck at sex, and nearly crashes a carriage when she agrees to sleep with him. God bless him. Felicity Niven doesn't shy away from going off the beaten path with her sex scenes; expressions of pleasure are never sanitized and they always feel real and honest.

My Present This Year by Sierra Simone

Sierra Simone unironically wrote a (step!) sibling romance some years ago (linked above— it's free!), inspired by that 2009 Folger's coffee commercial called "Coming Home". You know the one. Upon reread, Nick is is kind of giving "early version Tristan Thomas from Sierra's Lyonesse Trilogy" vibes. It also has all the hallmarks of a Sierra Simone romance: tragic pining-induced celibacy, there's a nickname with "little" in the beginning, someone is a biter, the lines "I want to be a good stepbrother" are uttered...

Her Virgin Duke by Nicola Davidson

If you're in the mood for a Christmas-themed romance ft. virgin dukes who learn to fuck shockingly fast (wow sex lessons seems to be the theme of these holiday romances), then this is the novella for you! The Duke of Tunbury aka Humdrum Tun is a virgin who doesn't even masturbate until he he meets brothel madam Delilah on a bet, and within days the man's basically an animal in the sack. His learning curve is only matched by that of Beck's from The Major's Welcome Home by Tessa Bailey and Nick Gentry's from Worth Any Price by Lisa Kleypas.

Size Doesn't Matter by Jennie Kew

Sophie is a famous plus-sized model who unwittingly hooks up with her ex(ish)'s younger brother Jack on New Year's Eve, and when she finds out, she's Not Happy. Jennie Kew is a solid erotic romance writer who writes a lot of books with kink, and I've loved nearly even book she's written in her Bennett's Bastards series. This is probably one of the softer books in her series, both tone and sex-wise, but I love how she wrote Sophie being both bigger and taller, and she's in her thirties, but she's still very much a brat sexually— I feel like a lot of authors equate this with dainty little girls— and Jack clocks this right off the bat and is very much here for it. This book also features one of my much-loved tropes often found in Harlequins.... :D

Joyce Davidson awoke suddenly at the sound of her phone ringing. After getting only a few hours of sleep, she groggily felt around her nightstand for her phone. Once she grabbed it, she finally opened her eyes to see who was calling:

         Penny

Groaning at the early call, she answered.

“Sorry to wake you but we got a case. It’s pretty urgent.”

Gaining the ability to speak, Joyce quietly replied, 

“I’ll be there in thirty.”

Hanging up the phone, Joyce was finally able to read the time on the screen of her phone.

Begrudgingly dragging herself out of bed, she made her way toward her bathroom for a shower and to brush her teeth. Fifteen minutes later, she was getting dressed, putting on a bit of makeup, and grabbing her keys. She grabbed a breakfast bar before heading out her door and locking it, making her way to her car.

Exactly thirty minutes after Penelope called her, Joyce Davidson was opening the doors of the bullpen to be greeted by her bustling around.

“Everyone’s at the round table except Rossi and Morgan, they’re both a few minutes away.”

Walking up the stairs toward the debriefing room with Penelope, Joyce looks over at the files in her hands and asks,

“How bad is it?”

Penelope looked frazzled.

“On a scale from one to never wanting to leave the safety of my tech cave ever again, I’d say it’s never wanting to leave the safety of my tech cave.”

Joyce said nothing.

“Five women in Easttown, Pennsylvania have been found dead. Their bodies were found naked, with the exception of the latest victim who was found fully clothed, though the clothes were not hers. And here’s the real kicker, each of the victims had been flayed.”

That had brought everyone's attention up to Penelope.

“Flayed, was that the cause of death?” Emily questioned, flipping through her file to find the medical examiner's report.

“No. The cause of death was blood loss, which the flaying contributed to, but, the M.E. report concluded that the flaying was most likely just a way to torture the victims.”

“So they were alive,” JJ stated. Penelope nodded in confirmation, though no one really needed her to.

“Could it be the unsub’s signature?” Derek questioned. 

“It’s possible, however, flaying was historically used either as torture, as Garcia said, or as a form of execution. Though most sources state its origin in the middle ages, In Kleine Kulturgeschichte der Haut, author Ernst k. Jung provided an essay of flaying dating back all the way to the Neo-Assyrian, the king actually seemed to gloat ab–” 

“Reid.” Hotch interrupted his face as serious and stone-cold as ever. Reid stopped in his tracks, mouthing a sorry and awkwardly pulling his lips into a line.

“Easttown’s a tight night community, with the last time a murder happened being a few years ago. Nothing like this though. The plane ride's short so we won’t have time to debrief until we get there. Their chief was very insistent that we come, so, wheels up in twenty. ”

After the short plane ride, the BAU arrived in Easttown. Walking into the police station, the team of seven was met by the chief of police. He extended his hand toward Hotch, who took it.

“Agent Hotchner, Chief Carter, thank you so much for coming. We really need your help. The chief said dropping Hotch’s hand as he began introducing the team.

“No problem. These are agents Rossi, Morgan, Prentiss, Jareau, Davidson, and Dr. Reid.” The aforementioned agents (and doctor) nodded their heads in greeting.

“Nice to meet you all,” said the chief before turning, “Follow me, I’ll let you guys get set up.

The seven followed him into a conference room with white boards set up. Chief Carter then left them to do their job while he went back to his office. The team quickly debriefed before Hotch told them their assignments.

“Prentiss, JJ, Morgan, I want you guys to go to the latest victim’s house, talk to the parents, see if you can find anything. Rossi and I will go to the scene, Davidson and Reid, I want you to stay here and work on the geographical profile.”

They nodded their heads in acknowledgment to their tasks, Davidson and Reid setting up at a corkboard while the rest of the team was leaving.

Twenty or so minutes had passed and Reid and Davidson sat in the conference discussing different aspects of the case.

“The fourth victim, Maisy Ware, lived three miles from where her body was found, Rowan Huffman was found four, Maddie Bernard 5.”

“Chester is small, he can’t be too far.”

 What if he doesn’t live in Chester and only comes here for his victims? Joyce questioned aloud.

“It’s possible, but flaying takes time and a place to do it. If he didn’t live here he would have to own a property or something here to be able to bring his victims to and flay them. Coming here, taking someone, bringing them back to where he lives, then dumping them back here would be too risky.” Reid said.

“Yeah, I guess you’re right.”

Reid and Davidson continued to talk about the case. In the middle of his sentence, Reid was interrupted by two voices.

“I’m telling you I’m right.”

“Mare, come on, he was totally checking you out, even I picked up on that.” The man punctuated his sentence with his eyes shooting up at the other two people in the room. The woman, Mare, and the man stared at Reid and Davidson, them doing the same before Mare spoke up.

“Who the hell are you two?”

Reid and Davidson looked at each other with widened eyes, their mouths open a bit. After a few seconds of awkward silence, Joyce spoke up.

“Um, I’m Agent Davidson, this is Dr. Reid, we’re with the FBI.”

“The FBI?” The man asked.

“The Behavioral Analysis Unit. Your chief called us in to assist on the recent flayings here.”

The man stood there, looking grateful that they were getting help, whereas the woman looked annoyed.

“Chief didn’t tell us he was bringing anyone in.” And with that, she left the conference room, presumably to talk to Chief Carter.

The man she left behind stood there a bit awkward, staring a Joyce and Spencer, them staring right back. After what seemed like an eternity, he cleared his throat and spoke.

“She doesn’t always take well to people on the outside working on her cases, she was the same with me. That’s Detective Sheehan, I’m Detective Zabel.” He gave the two of them a small smile, holding his hand out for them to shake. Joyce took it happily, a “nice to meet you” exiting her mouth, while Reid pressed his lips in an awkward line and waved. Detective Zabel looked a bit perplexed but dropped his hand quickly.

“Uh, anyway, I guess I’ll leave you two to do your job. If you need anything from the case my office is just down the hall to your right, the third door. It’s labeled.” He turned to walk out the door, making it a few steps past the threshold before pausing and reentering the conference room. Joyce and Spencer had already turned back to their board, not expecting him to be back.

He flashed them a smile, this time it showed off the dimples in his cheeks.

“Welcome to Easttown.”

"Finding Voltaire recalcitrant, Bishop Biord alerted the authorities in Versailles, and Voltaire soon received a sharp reproof from Louis Phélypeaux, comte de Saint-Florentin, the Minister of the Interior." But Voltaire was determined not to be put down by the bishop, and the following year (1769), at Easter time, he resolved once more to take communion. He knew that Biord would prevent him from taking it in the normal way, so he pretended to be dying, in order to be able to demand that Father Pierre Gros, the local parish priest, give him the last rites in his bed. At first Gros procrastinated and told Voltaire that he must first retract, before a notary, all his bad works. But Voltaire was not to be put off, claiming that he had suffered several attacks of fever and that in such circumstances the law required Gros to give him the last rites. There was now a prolonged tussle back and forth, in which Gros and various other priests tried to insist that Voltaire could not have absolution, and therefore could not receive communion, without a full recantation of his past impieties and a full declaration of his Catholic faith. Voltaire drafted for them several different statements that were much less than a full declaration of faith but avoided signing any of the texts that they put before him. Eventually, by persistence and evasion and deception and bullying, he wore them down: he demanded and got absolution from a friar, and his last rites from Gros. As he received communion, he said:

Having my God in my mouth, I declare that I sincerely forgive those Who have written calumnies about me to the king, and who have not succeeded in their evil plan. Having taken his 'last rites', and after all the Priests and bystanders had left the room, Voltaire immediately jumped out of bed and went for a walk in the garden with Wagnière."

Scott is twenty-four years old and lost his father when he was just seven; he spends his life smoking marijuana and practicing as a tattoo artist on friends, trying to overcome the trauma and understand what his path is, while he has to learn to live with his younger sister in her first year of college and his mother who has found a new partner 17 years after her husband's death.

The project was announced on January 29, 2019 by Universal.

The first trailer of the film was released on May 8, 2020.

The film was distributed on demand in the United States starting from 12 June 2020, while in Italy from 30 July both in cinemas and on demand rental.

On the aggregator Rotten Tomatoes the film has received 75% positive and professional reviews with an average rating of 6.9 out of 10 based on 279 reviews, while on Metacritic it has obtained a score of 67 out of 100 on 50 reviews.

Giorgio Viaro, of Best Movie, places the film in ninth place among the best of 2020.

On this day, February 27 in 1847, heralded English actress Ellen Terry was born in Coventry, England, the third surviving child born into a theatrical family. Terry began performing as a child, and in 1878 she joined Henry Irving's company as his leading lady. For more than the next twenty years she was considered Britain’s leading actress. Irving and Terry had several highly successful tours in Britain and America. Terry made her American debut in 1883 followed by seven separate tours, including in Milwaukee on her sixth tour, where she played in The Merchant of Venice, Nance Oldfield, and The Bells, May 6-8, 1900 at the Davidson Theatre. In 1925, three years before her death at 81, she was appointed Dame Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire by King George V, only the second actress to be created a dame for her professional achievements.
