Just going to address a few of the types of comments I see about AI on tumblr dot com.
I've seen people say that it's useless, because real human emotion is what the world needs now.
I've seen people dismiss it as a fad, cheering for it to crash and burn like bitcoin or NFTs.
And I've seen people passionately discuss how a) AI is using the intellectual property and creative work of human people to learn, without crediting that property, work, or the creators that enable that AI to exist, b) with that knowledge, AI can recreate or replicate the work of human artists, writers, and other content creators, thereby rendering artists/writers/creators without the means by which to earn a living. Many of these passionate (important, true) arguments end with some kind of conclusion like, "This is why AI is evil and no one should ever support it's use."
Let's just talk about the last one first. Importantly, I don't want to minimize or reduce the problems that artists, designers, writers, musicians, etc all face due to AI. It's not just artists. Anyone who creates content and puts it on the internet can have it stolen without credit by AI. AI can take an article written by a journalist, change the words slightly, and generate a fake name and fake photo so that the journalist who wrote the article makes no money while the company with the AI rakes it in. It's a huge problem that is destroying livelihoods as well as avenues of creation, expression, and information-sharing that will only get worse.
But to conclude that AI is therefore evil is kind of like saying social media creates toxic environments and therefore the entire internet is evil. Social media sucks, but I use the internet for keeping in touch with friends and banking and taxes and learning about the world and fandom and watching TV and learning about problems at work as quickly as possible and donating to charities. I mean, like, the internet does kind of suck; enshittification is real, but I think we all understand that the internet can be a useful tool.
Similarly, AI is being used to save lives. It solved the protein-folding problem, which not only saves lives but can help humanity in tons of other ways. It can identify certain signs of cancer more quickly than any human could. And before you say "well it's fine if we're only using it for science," you should know that the identifying cancer thing got discovered because some bakery wanted AI to identify pastries for pricing reasons. AI can process the billions of data that are necessary to consider to mitigate and prevent further climate change; it can help us come up with ideas for how to do so. In a bizarre example, AI can recognize which wood comes from which tree to help authorities discover illegal lumber trafficking which depletes endangered trees and protected forests. AI can help predict and prepare for the next pandemic. AI can explore space. AI can spot fake news.
Vilify certain uses of AI as is just and necessary, but vilifying all of AI just means that fewer people understand what AI can actually do, which means fewer people working to ensure this tool actually works for us rather than against us.
Second, let's just talk about AI as a fad. This idea frankly boggles me. AI is not bitcoin. AI is the internet. It's the computer. It's electricity. It's the compass. It's not just going to change the world, it already has, and it's not going anywhere.
AI is your spam filter. AI is your auto-correct. AI is why you see the ads you do. AI is why you get emails about deals for trips when you've been thinking about making a trip. AI is in your GPS, planning your route. AI is your search engine. I'm not trying to sell these things as positives right now; I'm selling them as realities. AI is not going away because it is already here, you who said you hoped it was like bitcoin are already using it, it's not going away.
AI is going to drive your cars. It's going to design ads specifically targeted to you as an individual. AI is going to be your children's friend and it's going to buy your groceries, and I'm just not sure there's much you can do about that at this point.
But last I want to talk about what the world needs now, because it does need humanity. It needs humanity to understand that the enemy is not AI; the entities that threaten our humanity are not AI entities. The entities that threaten our humanity are the corporations that are currently building AI with corporate interests in mind, with commercial interests in mind.
It might sound like I'm splitting hairs here. Maybe the folks who are so against AI on tumblr dot com are against AI because corporations are developing AI and what they mean when they say that AI is evil is that the current outlook on AI is just not that great because it is not being regulated and studied by enough governments, many of the general populace are either ignoring it or condemning it, and those who are most focused on its development have capitalist agendas that mean AI is going to be a lot worse before it gets better. But somehow, I'm getting the idea that the view on AI is not that nuanced--and it needs to be.
The humanity we need now, imo, is curiosity and ingenuity and passion, and we need that curiosity and ingenuity and passion directed at AI. If we get curious, if we inform ourselves, if we know what it is and what it can be and how to use it, then we can start to make demands of our governments for regulations. We can start to make demands of companies for how this should be used. We can start to incorporate AI into our lives in a way that gives us more time and space for art and creation and writing, not less. If we, as a species, were careful about this, we could use AI to make our world better, not just for humans but for every living thing and so many of the unliving things. We just have to pay attention.
Meanwhile, James Bridle's pointed out in Ways of Being: Animals, Plants, Machines: The Search for a Planetary Intelligence, "We tend to imagine AI as embodied in something like a robot or a computer, but it can really be instantiated as anything. Imagine a system with clearly defined goals, sensors and effectors for reading and interacting with the world, the ability to recognize pleasure and pain as attractors and things to avoid, the resources to carry out its will, and the legal and social standing to see that its needs are catered for, even respected. That's a description of an AI--it's also a description of a modern corporation. For this 'corporate AI,' pleasure is growth and profitability, and pain is lawsuits and drops in shareholder value. Corporate speech is protected, corporate personhood recognized, and corporate desires are given freedom [. . .] Crucially, [corporations] lack empathy, or loyalty, and they are hard--although not impossible--to kill."
Then he quotes Charles Stross, who wrote, "We are now living in a global state that has been structured for the benefit of non-human entities with non-human goals."
We could be treating technology itself not as something humans, in our dominance and supremacy, impose onto our world, but rather as a natural intelligence evolving alongside us. In so doing the focus would not be on creating machines that seek only profit and extraction, but rather make the world a better place. To do that we should be forming relationships with this technology and at the same time, rediscovering our relationships with the world around us. And just like anything the steps to get there are first curiosity, then education, then legislation.

Sigma Star Saga DX Game Boy Advance physical edition pre-orders now available - Gematsu
Publisher Limited Run Games and developer WayForward have opened pre-orders for the Game Boy Advance physical edition of Sigma Star Saga DX, a refined version of the 2005-released shoot ’em up RPG hybrid.
Back in July 2024, WayForward announced that it plans to release Sigma Star Saga DX for modern consoles and PC. While today’s announcement is focused on pre-orders for the Game Boy Advance version, it also reconfirms that “a version for modern platforms, running on Limited Run Games’ Carbon Engine, is planned for physical and digital release in the future.”
“Sigma Star Saga DX is a new and improved version of this classic sci-fi shooter / adventure, polished and refined by the original 2005 dev team,” said Sigma Star Saga creator Matt Bozon in a press release. “We collected 20 years of fan feedback, and made this beloved game even better! Now, players who missed out two decades ago can finally experience this truly inspired and experimental genre mashup, and players who enjoyed the game back in the day will want to add this new, faster-paced, harder-hitting version to their collections!”
The Game Boy Advance version is available for pre-order in $49.9 standard and $99.99 Collector’s editions. The standard edition includes the game cartridge and manual in a retro-style box. The Collector’s Edition includes a special Galactic Blue game cartridge, manual, retro-style box, soundtrack CD, coin, keychain, and poster in deluxe packaging.
Here is an overview of the game, via WayForward:

So, the US Copyright Office is asking for public input about the whole issue of copyright and AI art, and as someone who's not a fan of modern copyright overreach, but with the rise of this issue also feels like I have been abandoned by God in this respect because it feels like everyone just started suddenly turning like the Pod People in Invasion of the Body Snatchers and start shrieking at me when I'm consistent with my values...
...Well, let's just say I'm kinda nervous. But, I recall enough of you hate copyright that you might as well be able to help, so I may as well boost.
My views on it, which I will submit:
Limiting fair use to stop the harvesting of AI data would have huge after-effects, both allowing only megacorps with their own proprietary models to use these tools and also likely being abused by these same megacorps to shut down independent artists.
This is also true for laws forcing the purgation of models using previously mass-harvested data, the havoc it would wreak would be unfathomable and I could easily see that abused to further attack sites like the Internet Archive.
I think there is room to consider models finetuned on a singular living creator/artist's style non-consentually as non-fair-use, that would be reasonable, but no further than that.
The way non-consentual inclusion in datasets should be handled is through expanding online privacy laws rather than copyright law, because this is a privacy issue and always should have been a privacy issue, and you need to tell Chuck Schumer to stop serving as a lobbyist cumdumpster and actually pass some privacy laws that aren't "Think of the Children"-type garbage like KOSA or EARN IT.
Copyrighting artstyle would be an unfathomably terrible idea that would make the visual art world as much of a copyright hellscape as the music world and destroy the livelihoods of all traditional artists who utilize pastiche at all, DO NOT DO THIS, NO MATTER WHAT ADOBE SAYS.
The idea that purely AI-generated works are automatically public domain should be explicitly placed into law, and in fact stringent standards should be created for what counts as "human input" so that megacorps don't find loopholes to still displace workers while still keeping copyright on their AI creations, because "pure" AI art being auto-PD is potentially a major tool to prevent worker displacement and should be used for such.

How can you optimize the performance of machine learning models in the cloud?
Optimizing machine learning models in the cloud involves several strategies to enhance performance and efficiency. Here’s a detailed approach:
Choose the Right Cloud Services:
Managed ML Services:
Use managed services like AWS SageMaker, Google AI Platform, or Azure Machine Learning, which offer built-in tools for training, tuning, and deploying models.
Auto-scaling:
Enable auto-scaling features to adjust resources based on demand, which helps manage costs and performance.
Optimize Data Handling:
Data Storage:
Use scalable cloud storage solutions like Amazon S3, Google Cloud Storage, or Azure Blob Storage for storing large datasets efficiently.
Data Pipeline:
Implement efficient data pipelines with tools like Apache Kafka or AWS Glue to manage and process large volumes of data.
Select Appropriate Computational Resources:
Instance Types:
Choose the right instance types based on your model’s requirements. For example, use GPU or TPU instances for deep learning tasks to accelerate training.
Spot Instances:
Utilize spot instances or preemptible VMs to reduce costs for non-time-sensitive tasks.
Optimize Model Training:
Hyperparameter Tuning:
Use cloud-based hyperparameter tuning services to automate the search for optimal model parameters. Services like Google Cloud AI Platform’s HyperTune or AWS SageMaker’s Automatic Model Tuning can help.
Distributed Training:
Distribute model training across multiple instances or nodes to speed up the process. Frameworks like TensorFlow and PyTorch support distributed training and can take advantage of cloud resources.
Monitoring and Logging:
Monitoring Tools:
Implement monitoring tools to track performance metrics and resource usage. AWS CloudWatch, Google Cloud Monitoring, and Azure Monitor offer real-time insights.
Logging:
Maintain detailed logs for debugging and performance analysis, using tools like AWS CloudTrail or Google Cloud Logging.
Model Deployment:
Serverless Deployment:
Use serverless options to simplify scaling and reduce infrastructure management. Services like AWS Lambda or Google Cloud Functions can handle inference tasks without managing servers.
Model Optimization:
Optimize models by compressing them or using model distillation techniques to reduce inference time and improve latency.
Cost Management:
Cost Analysis:
Regularly analyze and optimize cloud costs to avoid overspending. Tools like AWS Cost Explorer, Google Cloud’s Cost Management, and Azure Cost Management can help monitor and manage expenses.
By carefully selecting cloud services, optimizing data handling and training processes, and monitoring performance, you can efficiently manage and improve machine learning models in the cloud.

Quote of the Week
My take on this is that you cannot use async Rust correctly and fluently without understanding Arc, Mutex, the mutability of variables/references, and how async and await syntax compiles in the end. Rust forces you to understand how and why things are the way they are. It gives you minimal abstraction to do things that could’ve been tedious to do yourself.
I got a chance to work on two projects that drastically forced me to understand how async/await works. The first one is to transform a library that is completely sync and only requires a sync trait to talk to the outside service. This all sounds fine, right? Well, this becomes a problem when we try to port it into browsers. The browser is single-threaded and cannot block the JavaScript runtime at all! It is arguably the most weird environment for Rust users. It is simply impossible to rewrite the whole library, as it has already been shipped to production on other platforms.
What we did instead was rewrite the network part using async syntax, but using our own generator. The idea is simple: the generator produces a future when called, and the produced future can be awaited. But! The produced future contains an arc pointer to the generator. That means we can feed the generator the value we are waiting for, then the caller who holds the reference to the generator can feed the result back to the function and resume it. For the browser, we use the native browser API to derive the network communications; for other platforms, we just use regular blocking network calls. The external interface remains unchanged for other platforms.
Honestly, I don’t think any other language out there could possibly do this. Maybe C or C++, but which will never have the same development speed and developer experience.
I believe people have already mentioned it, but the current asynchronous model of Rust is the most reasonable choice. It does create pain for developers, but on the other hand, there is no better asynchronous model for Embedded or WebAssembly.

Navigating Real-Time Operations: The Power of Operational Dashboards
Operational dashboards are dynamic visual interfaces that provide real-time insights into an organization's day-to-day activities and performance. These dashboards are particularly valuable for monitoring short-term operations at lower managerial levels, and they find application across various departments. They stand as the most prevalent tools in the realm of business intelligence.
Typically, operational dashboards are characterized by their comprehensive nature, offering junior managers detailed information necessary to respond to market dynamics promptly. They also serve to alert upper management about emerging trends or issues before they escalate. These dashboards primarily cater to the needs of managers and supervisors, enabling them to oversee ongoing activities and make rapid decisions based on the presented information. Operational dashboards often employ graphical representations like graphs, charts, and tables and can be customized to display information pertinent to the specific user.
Examples of data typically showcased on an operational dashboard include:
Sales figures
Production metrics
Inventory levels
Service levels
Employee performance metrics
Machine or equipment performance data
Customer service metrics
Website or social media analytics
It is crucial to emphasize that operational dashboards are distinct from other dashboard types, such as strategic and analytical dashboards. These different dashboards serve varied purposes and audiences and contain dissimilar datasets and metrics. Here are a couple of examples.
Below, you can see a Revenue overview dashboard for QuickBooks. It provides month-by-month overviews of invoices, products, customers, profit and loss. Such a dashboard can be used on a daily basis and help monitor and manage operating activities.
This data visualization is connected to a data automation solution, Coupler.io. It automatically transfers fresh data from QuickBooks to the dashboard, making it auto-updating. Such a live dashboard can be an important instrument for enabling informed decision-making.

This Revenue overview dashboard is available as a free template. Open it and check the Readme tab to see how to use it.
Here’s another example of an operational dashboard, the Facebook Ads dashboard. It allows ad managers to closely track their ad performance. This dashboard is also powered by Coupler.io, so it depicts ad data in near real-time. This allows marketers to quickly define what works and what doesn’t and make adjustments on the go.

Facebook Ads dashboard is available as a free template. You can grab it and quickly get a copy of this dashboard with your data. In conclusion, operational dashboards are indispensable tools for organizations seeking to thrive in a dynamic business landscape. These real-time visual displays offer invaluable insights into day-to-day operations, equipping managers and supervisors with the information to make swift, informed decisions. As the most widely used business intelligence instruments, operational dashboards empower businesses to adapt to market changes, identify emerging trends, and maintain a competitive edge. Their versatility and capacity to monitor a wide range of metrics make them an essential asset for managing the intricacies of modern operations.

This morning Discord asked me what I thought of Generative AIs for art and writing. So I told them
"I am sure that there are places that Generative AI could be useful, but worry how it could be misused and abused. The intended use (to aid artists and authors) doesn't mean that it will be used that way; photography was originally billed as a tool to help artists, and now it is used extensively to replace what artists previously did. Having an AI that produces writing sounds like a trail straight to unknowing plagiarism. Not only that, I am concerned with the ethics of the data gathering that is necessary to teach an AI to do these things. Beyond that, auto-fill words/auto correct are annoyingly inaccurate and invasive to me, often correcting things after I've moved on in the sentence so I will miss the fact that while I typed the right word, it will change it to a different word. With an entirely different meaning. Trying to imagine an similar corrective tool in a art program sounds like a nightmare!"

watching my coworker wrestle with the AI powered auto complete in visual studio code convinced me never to touch that shit forever. none of the suggestions were close to what we needed, and it kept making it hard to tell what he had typed and what was suggested (admittedly that's probably his formatting settings but i digress)
then he bragged that it removed all the whitespace from a file we were working on in seconds. I just used a 10 character long regex. And the nice thing was that that let me practice my regex skills (yeah, i hate regex as much as anyone but it's a useful skill to have!) and think about the document's structure as i did, and i came up with some minor improvements in the process. NONE of that would have happened if i had just made copilot do it.
I do think LLMs have valuable uses for parsing large swaths of structured data, assisting people with disabilities, etc. But it really isn't a universal tool, it's pretty bad at a lot of things.
Casual use of generative AI really feels like the logical next step of the fast food/fast fashion/disposable goods culture we've built. Most of the people i talk to that use it seem to have this attitude of "who cares that the product it produces is universally lower quality than anything i could have made, it's cheap [to me] and fast". But i really think it's something where overuse will quickly take it from being a handy timesaver to being something you rely on to do all of your critical thinking for you. Critical thinking, creativity, etc are all muscles that will atrophy with disuse!
"I know chatgpt is bad but you just don't really have any choice" you literally do. Don't use it. Have some moral backbone.
#ai overuse has literally made a lot of my coworkers think less to the point i have trouble working with them#or relying on them to get tasks that require complex thought patterns#like evaluating a customer's weird turbospecific network topology#or figuring out what is needed to secure a new internal tool against compromise
