one thing I learned recently - that seems obvious in retrospect - is that 'being able to recognise intervals and chords by ear' is not necessarily something that you need to just hope will happen automatically if you music hard enough.
if you go to music school there's a specific exercise they do called 'ear training' where they sit you down and make you practice recognising stuff (chords and intervals and so on) - either the teacher will play it or you can get software that plays a thing and asks you to identify it. sorta like the musical equivalent of using a spaced repetition system to memorise vocab in language learning.
there's actually an ear training program in the GNU suite. you can get it here. it's just a python program that hooks into your computer's MIDI.

Experienced genuine intellectual interest in and excitement about something for the first time in a long time and it was a Cambridge PhD student describing her thesis, which is eight case studies of transboundary peoples, those who live, e.g., at the northern/southern Irish border, or the US/Mexico border, and cross it back and forth regularly for everyday life activities: school, work, shopping, visiting friends and family, etc. Most importantly, she analyzes how this is a right not enshrined in international law but enacted as though it is. I got excited because this is precisely how the border between Poland and the Ukrainian USSR functioned in Volhynia during the 1920s (and even into the 1930s), before the institution of international law--in that case, it was the continuity of pre-WWI boundaries in practice, on which authorities were instructed to crack down, but which they largely ignored or permitted with bribes. The porousness of borders, the way local communities interact with them, and the way empire vs. nation-state vs. other formations interact with each other vis-a-vis borders and the communities that live around them--those are my FAVORITE topics. I hope her thesis is public domain!!!!!

26 April 2025
WOW I have not studyblr'd in a long time! But I've recently had a small study Renaissance, so I might as well blog about it.
While continuing my programming and compsci studies, I've realized that I should probably brush up on some basic math too, because that's an important foundational skill. So I've started doing some daily math studies on Khan Academy, which is helpful. It's humbling, because despite having reached uni-level math in the past (years ago, back when I was actually in uni), I've forgotten all of it in the interim so now I'm back down to the algebra level đ
But it's good to stay humble when learning.
I also felt the urge to return to my active language studies, so I'm working through the Assimil courses for Mandarin Chinese and Croatian. The Mandarin course is in French ("Le chinois sans peine") and the Croatian course is in German ("Kroatisch ohne MĂŒhe") so it means I get to practice both those languages too, which is a nice benefit.
After a few days of doing math and language study, my brain felt like a parched flower blossoming after someone had finally watered it, so I decided I wanted to expand my learning even further! I always read a lot, but I tend to gravitate towards fiction and I keep meaning to read more nonfiction, so yesterday I picked up the Routledge Companion to Feminism and Post-Feminism, to brush up on my feminist history.
Today I got even more hyped about learning: I read a few pages of a book in French about African revolutionaries, practiced reading basic Chinese on LanguageCrush (love that site!), dabbled in the history of philosophy on AFAIK.io (do not love that site! so I'm not linking it! further info below), watched a documentary in German about microbes, and did the first unit of a college-level music theory course.
I LOVE LEARNING SO MUCH AHHHHH đ„°
Here's my actual learning log for the past few days:
Apr. 21 - Assimil âKroatisch ohne MĂŒheâ lessons 1 and 2 (passive wave).
Apr. 22 - Assimil âKroatisch ohne MĂŒheâ lesson 3 (passive wave). - Assimil âLe Chinois sans peineâ lesson 1 (passive wave).
Apr. 23 - Khan Academy: Algebra I (unit 2) - watched some videos in Croatian - Lazy Chinese: one video - Assimil âKroatisch ohne MĂŒheâ lesson 4 (passive wave). - Assimil âLe Chinois sans peineâ lesson 2 (passive wave).
Apr. 24 - nothing (sick)
Apr. 25 - reading: Routledge Companion to Feminism and Post-Feminism (2%) - Khan Academy: Algebra I (unit 2) - Assimil âKroatisch ohne MĂŒheâ lesson 5 (passive wave). - Assimil âLe Chinois sans peineâ lesson 3 (passive wave).
Apr. 26 - German: watched ARTE documentary on microbes (1.5 hours) - French: read a few pages of the book Figures de la rĂ©volution africaine: de Kenyatta Ă Sankara by SaĂŻd Bouamama. - Khan Academy: Algebra I (unit 2) - Assimil âKroatisch ohne MĂŒheâ lesson 6 (passive wave). - Assimil âLe Chinois sans peineâ lesson 4 (passive wave). - Chinese: read a short beginnerâs passage on LanguageCrush. - studied some history of philosophy (from the site afaik.io, which I do NOT recommend â the content appears to be entirely AI-generated and some of it contains amusing but concerning mistakes; I am definitely not going to use that site anymore) - music theory: completed Unit 1 (Basic Concepts) of the course âMusic Theory for the 21st-Century Classroomâ (which I do recommend; it looks incredible!)

I'm an illustrator and graphic designer learning about book cover design and illustration. Today's breakdown: Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke @susannaclarke_ (on IG) published by @bloomsburypublishing (IG)
Cover design by William Webb @willwebbdesign (IG)

One of the first things I noticed while researching the cover is that not every edition is the same. I have a US paperback, which has additional text--"The International Bestseller" at the top and a quote from the Sunday Times at the bottom. Another edition I saw had NYT Bestseller and Time Magazine's Number 1 book of the year.
I assume these relate to the particular places in which these editions are being sold and what endorsements are most likely to sway potential readers.
I used my copy for a layout breakdown and reconstruction. The original:

My reconstruction:

For comparison: original vs reconstruction

This is a typography-focused cover, with the raven serving as the only illustrative element. There are two typefaces used, both with serifs. The title and author's name are in a font resembling IM Fell English, which I found on Google Fonts. It's primarily characterized by its irregular edges, probably the reason it was used.
The cover is very high-contrast, two-tone white silver on black, without any halftones or greys intermixed. Overall, it looks almost like a newspaper or early print book in which the color scheme has been reversed. The effect created is both "historical" and gothic, accurately positioning the book as if it were a gothic novel of the period.
The raven pushes the overall look towards the fantastic, hinting at the presence of English magic and mythology in a way that may not be obvious to the potential reader but which becomes very clear upon reading.
I love how simple it is, with each detail hinting at what the reader can expect. Itâs a great cover!
