(My perspective here is for fiction or real life, whichever)I noticed something on your disclaimer that I disagree with, however I'm not here to "cop a holier-than-thou attitude" about it. I'd only like to point out that where you mention "a 17 yr old dating someone much older is not paedophilia" is more of a grey area than people tend to think. I also disagree with jumping to calling people who think it is paedophilic "delusional". I think the age at which the mind actually starts to work like>

Pedophiles are attracted to prepubescent children. 17 years olds have undergone puberty. Therefore, anyone who is attracted to a 17 year old is not a pedophile by LEGAL and DICTIONARY definition. That’s it. End of story.

I don’t care what or how anyone else sees it, that’s simply how it is. Canada is north of the Equator, Elvis Presley died in 1977, someone over the age of 21 attracted to a 17 year old is not a pedophile. These are just facts and anyone trying to act like a 17 year old is still a baby when it comes to relationships with adults is just infantilizing people who, in  many other countries, would already be considered adults.

The reason why the word “pedophile” is disputed is because fuckasses like the people on Tumblr use it to mean “this 21 year old is showing interest in a 17 year old” or “An 18 year old having sex with a 16 year old is a pedophile”. Shit like that. 

In short, I am someone who despises people who uses words incorrectly and stretches their definitions to mean something they find “icky” and demonize it with bad language like that. If the guy is attracted to girls with tits, he’s not a pedophile. If she’s under 18, he’s an ephephile at most. We have other words for these kinds of ‘unlawful’ attractions, and using “pedophile” so loosely is insulting to people who have been actually victimized by pedophiles and people like me that find hyperbole in language to be a slippery slope that leads to misunderstandings and further degradation of the meaning of words.

Icha you are not petty, what the hell, don't ever think that, this piece of pop culture needs to be confronted. This whitewashing needs to be confronted each and every time, as that is the only way to make it stop because we cannot rely on the people in charge of the movie/book/whatever to be smart.

This is starting to get exhausting. It’s more and more sending a “We want your stories, but we don’t want you nor your values” message to non-western countires. It’s honestly ridiculous. From the trailer, it looks like such a goddamn mess? There’s cheerleaders, a feeris wheels that gets down, someone falling from a helicopter, an obvious American school setting, and i’m just like, what’s happening? How badly are they switching the tone from complex manipulations to just “everything explore” how much white does it get?

I don’t know the original Ghost In the Shell  but from what I read I think it was supposed to be quite a “what makes us human with the development of the machine” stories, but the whole Scarjo version keeps repeating “they didn’t give you your life back, they stole it” and it’s such a switch of tone for a more basic, less thought of story. (also this is the story of Robocop if they insist, at least they should use their own medium for that.)

Death Note seems to be going in that direction considering the trailer and the casting list. I swear to god I would never have expected “Night Club Ladies” or “Homecoming King” to ever be this important in a casting - especially while meanwhile, there’s legit no mention of Rem. 

No mention of Rem would mean that Misa - sorry, Mia - doesn’t have a Death Note, and from that point on, it’s stripping Misa/Mia from her own story. Therefore, her dynamic with Light would change right away. 

A lot of the characters missing from the casting are very important characters that had been in all 12 volumes of the manga, or characters who’s plot point are extremely important, yet apparently Teenager #2 is really important, so the huge blow in the face to me is that they seem to be Teenazing a Thriller and Manipulation story.

And still there, I don’t understand. The whole cast, with the exception of a few characters coming from others countries that are up to interpretation I suppose (I think Watari, Near, Mello - L is biracial Japonese/Britain, that’s canon) is Japanese.

There is a legit a whole plot point, one of L’s first big manipulation against Light, that is all because of the Japanese’s setting. There are plot points going on /because/ They’re from Japan.

And again, if they really feel like “Westernizing” the concept and switch it to America (which I don’t get) they could cast Japanese people still because??? Japanese??? exist??? outside of Japan?? And they’re not just supportive characters? Especially not in their own stories??

When you take a story of another culture, at least make it in sort that the face of the project is from this culture as well. It’s their story, not ours. 

How insulting is that that they took one of Japan’s most popular manga, in a Japanese setting, and decide that the only Asians in the movie are going to be really secondary characters, like, Nightclub ladies???  

I am seriously upset. I love Death Note. It was one of my first manga, I have a particular affection for it. (by the way I saw you say you didn’t know much about the manga/Anime and I truly recommand it to you if you feel like it. I kinda prefer the manga bc the anime apparently made a few changes on the second part, but also because they talk a lot and sometimes it’s just better to pause in what they said while reading than registering everything as they talk.).  And it’s adding to a very, very long list of disrespectful whitewashing. There had been a violent backlash over it those last few years, how can Hollywood can keep that seriously going?  They could have done so much better.

(also considering Hollywood still recent anti-Asian narrative during their anti-communism/Post Pearl Harbor period, constantly erasing Asians from their own narrative is even more disturbing. Their anti-Asian narrative is still /recent/ guys, the stereotypical racist portrayal is still there, yet they keep erasing Asians from their own narrative. This is so fucked up, and it’s getting worse and worse the more they try to adapt Asian Stories just so they can cash in their popularity, but still denying them the representation they deserve after this grim cinema history).

And even worse (I’m never done talking about it) they could have easily just... not include the characters from the manga and make it an American story?

Lemme explain, the plot of Death Note starts because a Shinigami (a God of Death), Ryuk, drops his Death Note somewhere. In the manga, it turns out it dropped on a Japanese High school’s ground and was find by a Japanese.

but the One Shot that the writers wrote before that had Ryuk drop the Death Note near an Elementary School in Japan. And therefore, the plot was entierely different.

My point? You can make a story with OCs about Ryuk dropping the Death Note in America. It’d be a spinoff but it’d be okay. It’d make sense. You can even winks at the original story, say, when the new OC looks at the names in the Death Note and maybe Ryuk could mention “that Japanese teen he knew”.  Create a new story, create new characters, keep Ryuk and the Death Note, develop your own story, and then you can set it in America. With others characters. It won’t be a Light and L story, not a “trying to be God” story, it’ll be a Ryuk story. 

And why not?? the Death Note offers so much possibility. If you want to make your “american version” Go all out!! Put yourslef in the lore, don’t try to just whiten the original story!! Death note is one of the rare story that would allow you to make an American SpinOff without having to disrespect the original manga, but nope!!

And even worse, speaking of spinoff: There is a Death Note Novel that happens in Los Angeles. While the main characters are Japanese or Biracial Japanese/Britain, the rest of the cast is American since it happens in America. See? A Murdercase, a puzzle to establish L past, one of the rare Death Note element that was never adapted and yet explain the bonds that are mentioned in the anime between two characters who respects each other although they never met. (although I saw people say it was also a story of a Death Note dropping in America and no, it wasn’t, but it involed Shinigami yes)

There are tons of ways to solve this whitewashing problem but the studio decided “no we will make it White and have it be more like American Teen Movies” and this is disrespectful.

I’m upset. I’m salty. I’ll complain about it.

I was wondering, do you have any idea how many chapters you'll do for your webcomic? Or for how long you may continue with that world/those characters at all (because you may decide to do a spin-off or something, maybe unrelated to the webcomic itself)? Do you have an ending set out and determined already, and if so how did you get there?

I don’t know how many chapters exactly! I will tell you that starting with chapter 6, the two story arcs (Hawk’s and Liya’s) will start to merge together some. Chapters past 6 will likely be a little shorter and may switch between characters more. This arc will end after a time, and then there’ll be another (probably somewhat shorter) arc afterward that will finish out the story entirely.

I’ll probably keep using this universe for a very long time yet after White Noise is done, but I’d let these characters rest, I think. I’m not sure what’ll happen when I get there. These characters have been around so long and are so important to me that I’m not really sure how I’m gonna do the whole post-comic grief thing that I see some artists undergo.

I do have an ending. It’s important to have an ending in mind, I think, when you start out a story. Some of the details may change some as I get there, but the core ending will be as I’ve always planned it.

I got to an end just by asking myself: what kind of end would justify these characters’ arcs (or do I need to justify them?) What does it say if I pick this end or that one? What feels right to me? What kind of ending do I like seeing the best when I read/watch other things? Do I like really terribly sad endings or really very happy ones?

1.I agree with most of what you said in your response, but I was going off of what you said in your disclaimer as literal; when you say "much older" I was imagining a 30 yr old or +. 2. Pedophile IS used rather loosely. Even the actual definitions of it differ. 3. Yes in many countries they are considered adults however for an intelligent conversation people need to discard things like culture and upbringing as in the ways of brain development, a seventeen yr old is certainly not an adult.

If 17 is an adult, then neither is an 18 year old. No one I know felt a dramatic change in their mental capacity from 17 to 18, and neither did I. I can tell you the way I thought at 16 is much different than how I think at 21, but that’s because those are several years apart. To assume that someone at 18 just magically knows what’s what and is mature is stupid. There are some people that just go through life knowing shit all about anything up until being an adult, and some people who grow up seeing and experiencing tons of shit at a young age (not saying that a 12 year old that has to take care of their siblings due to a home situation is automatically ready to have sex with someone 18 or whatever, not at all), but there are people out there that are physically ready, aged appropriately and don’t know fuck about anything and yet they somehow get the green light but someone a year younger than them who knows their shit better than an 18 year old can’t?

Is it simply a matter of “the 18 year old just isn’t choosing to think hard enough” or is it “people mature at different rates even if biologically they’re not fully cooked enough”. 

By the logic of brain development, no one should be having sex or making big life decisions until they’re 25  because that’s when shit is set. Hell, back then that was the average age a man got married because it was assumed by then he would have had his shit together to support a wife and kid. If he could get land and a homestead secured early, he would marry early. A woman got married around 20-22 (this is at least in New England in the era right before America’s independence).

Ah, I just don’t see a problem with a much older individual being interested in someone who is 17. If the law is a problem, then they can just wait one year for it to be legal and pursue a sexual relationship. I don’t see a problem with an emotional, romantic (yet abstinent), or even guardian-like relationship because I personally am okay with having such an arrangement between me and another person (despite being 21). I literally have no problem with it because it’s their lives and their choice to be together.

This is going to come off as selfserving but I have 2 things that are unrelated to 1 another: Where did you get your background or if you're not sure, how did you find it? and: That number of times you've been told to.. is horrible. I am so sorry for that, no one should ever have that happen to them. People really don't get it (or maybe they do) that you're behind a computer screen. You'd never say this to someone standing right in front of you, but you ARE saying it to a real person both times.

I was holding this in because I said I would leave you to do your thing and stop bothering you, but I've been on a binge of talking to friendly people this morning and you might need to hear this so here i go: I don't know if you'll remember but until I talk about this I won't forget(not that I'm just trying to rant at you) - so there was a comment on one of the pages of your comic, this chapter, maybe pages 10 - 34 or something and they said-

your comic was great “but teige has feminine behaviour” or they hoped you would stop writing him to be so feminine or some bull like that. You replied with trying to write teige as realistic as possible, basing him off your own experiences. This person mentioned they were transgender. However I don’t think this person has a very open mind when it comes to non-masculinity. Teige isn’t testosterone fueled bullshit, he is realistic, he is not a 2d character or even a character that acts fake-

and then is “redeemed” later on or whatever. He isn’t what I think is called in writing as a “straw-man”. He’s approachable, warm, talkative, can hold a conversation, social, sense of humour/funny, and can put up a fight. None of this translates to being “feminine”, saying that is complete shit. The realism is on-point and honest to god, it flew over my head that Teige was trans until I read your comments revealing it to someone down in the comment section. I said HOLY SHIT outloud and then-

I get a lot of weird comments about Teige, to be frank. They’re usually good-intentioned. Maybe they make me grumpy for a bit, until I can figure out a diplomatic response. None of them have made me start ‘over-thinking’ anything. I’m generally an ‘out’ person and used to do education panels on being trans in college. I’m pretty used to explaining this stuff, even if it gets tiring.

Relatedly: part of my deal with writing White Noise is having a whole cast of characters that are queer in different ways, but it’s casual. The comic isn’t about anyone’s queerness, but that stuff will come through over time because it’s part of the characters’ lives like everything else. There’s a few things I am learning from this as we go on:

There are people who are reading the comic now who don’t realize just about the whole cast is queer. They may have been reading the comic for several years not knowing this. This is a fact I am so used to knowing about my characters that I forgot it’s not inherently obvious to everyone else, since I don’t hinge any one character’s identity on it or do things like call WN an ‘LGBT comic.’ (Is it? Fuck, I dunno.) I guess this will matter to some of these people as it becomes clear? I guess we’ll just see how that shakes out.

Some people really need to be hit over the head with a character’s queerness before they will see it, and/or some people really don’t like it when queerness isn’t explicitly defined in-text for them.

People picking up on whether or not characters are trans or queer is not what I’m worried about. I’m showing it as obviously as it would realistically be with these characters’ personalities, so whether or not people pick up on it is largely dependent on who they are. Not something I can control for. I’m way more concerned with making the plot and worldbuilding interesting and clear without being either condescendingly hand-holdy or too opaque. Things the story is about.
