Febuwhump Day 6: Alt. 9: Natural Disaster (Wind)
AO3 link. Warnings: avalanche, ambiguous ending
Part 1/3. Part 2. Part 3.
Wind cheered loudly as he raced down the mountain. His hair and scarf were flapping madly behind him. The cold winter air was starkly different from the warm sea breeze he was used to. This air chilled him down to the bone, but today he paid it no mind. Shield surfing, as Wild called it, was worth the freeze.
Wind slid over a mound of snow, briefly caught air, then crashed back onto the snow. He screamed, but managed to keep his balance. Wild and Sky were at the bottom of the mountain cheering and waving. Wind waved back then quickly refocused on his path.
Just before he hit the sheer face of the mountain, he slid his shield in front of him and collapsed onto his side. He skid to a stop at Sky’s feet. Sky was quick to pull him up and brush the snow out of his hair.
“This is amazing!” Wind yelled, jumping in delight. His feet were still in the strap of his shield so Sky grabbed his shoulders to keep him from falling over.
Wild’s grin was large and bright, his eyes twinkling with the promise of adventure. “Go again?” Wild asked.
“Absolutely!” Wind said. He finally pulled his feet out of the shield and immediately started to run up the mountain.
“Hey, wait up!” Sky called, voice on the edge of laughter.
Wild quickly caught up and ran past him. Wind absolutely had to get some of those snow boots. Maybe tonight while Wild was cooking, Wind could sneak into his bag…
A loud rumbling shook Wind out of his thoughts. He slowed to a stop and looked around for the source of the sound. Sky caught up and stood next to Wind just as the ground began to shake.
“What’s that?” Wind asked. Sky had his brows furrowed and he shook his head.
“Hey, Wild!” Sky called. There was no response; Wild must have been too far ahead to hear them. Wind looked up the mountain and had to bring a hand up over his eyes to block out the sun. Wind gasped, and dropped his shield.
What looked like the entire mountain of snow was falling towards them. It was coming faster than Wind could have believed was possible. There was no sign of Wild, but Wind desperately wished he was here. Wild would know what to do. Wind had absolutely no idea.
“Wind, move!” Sky yelled. Sky grabbed his wrist and yanked him to the side.
They ran perpendicular to the snow as fast as they could, but without snow boots they were not making much progress. Wind risked a glance up at the snow and he felt his heart drop into his stomach. There was no way they were going to outrun it, it was just too fast. Wind looked around desperately for anything to shield them from the tidal wave of snow.
Just below them, there was a small group of thick pine trees.
“Sky, over there!” Wind called, but he could barely hear his own voice over the roar of the snow. He pulled his hand into Sky’s and pulled him towards the trees. Sky followed easily, but Wind could feel him falling behind. Wind pulled his arm desperately, not daring to look at the snow. He could hear it getting louder and closer every second.
They weren’t going to make it, they weren’t going to make it-
Sky’s hand slipped out of his. Wind turned, yelled, but his vision was overcome with a wave of white, and then there was nothing but the cold.
To be continued :)
