Avian headcanons [fighting]
It's important to note that Avians don't usually fight, they are mostly pretty calm with the exception of some subspecies or closed off groups. However, even those don't usually attack, unless threatened or bothered.
Despite their peaceful demeanor they may get into arguments and fights in the following situations:
Stuck/ trapped with only one/ very few peers in extremely closed evoirment.
To protect their mate/friends/family from someone or something - might even be another avian(more explanation below)
Mental health issues
Explanation:
1: This is usually due to a terrible practice among some people who don't believe the avians have intelligence.
Some groups from different races enjoy making them fight and betting on them. They capture and stress and frustrate avians ok purpose to get them angry for a good fight. Many times leaving them in very small cages with their opponent and start the process, with both of them constantly annoyed they instigate them to blame each other for their suffering.
2: this rarely occurs between avians, most likely to happen between the avian and some other creature.
They are loyal and very protective. Not much more to say.
3: Avians who become paranoid or delusional might become violent, usually towards specific individuals who they think have something to do with their delusion or ones trying to help them.
Avians who become too violent might get thrown out of their village/ group... Avians usually try to help and nurse their peers back to health, but they tend to give up after some time if they see no signs of them getting better... Especially if they are violent.
Obs: avians who are living on their own, outside of their usual villages or other types of civilization within the species, might be more keen to violence and prone to attack other creatures since they don't benefit from the safety of a community. although, that is very uncommon.
Some avians have been reported to becoming more defensive, violent and even starting to enjoy violence when practicing violence constantly.

Avian whumpee tearing out their feathers and leaving the bloody pile for caretaker when they get home as a gift.
Everyone else always wanted their beautiful feathers... and maybe if they just give them what they want, they'll let them go, maybe...

Note
do you got any whumpee with wings tropes or prompts you tend to like..
I'm writing ("writing" imagining my scenarios) pet whump, where whumper treats whumpee like the dove they are, and I'm looking for ideas to potentially incorporate..
I'd talk about it in more detail, but I don't wanna yammer on too much. Maybe when/if I make a whump blog. Have a good day, stranger!
-🌾🖋
Hello anon !
So here is the first ep of my winged whumpee story ( that I will continue once I'm done with Lull) and here is the list of ideas for wing whump. To which Idk anon added the idea of ✨molting ✨
I am personally a fan of nonhuman whumpees who are more animal than human (behaviour, voice, etc). Don't know about your dove, so I'll make a mix.
For pet whump with a winged whumpee, here's what I immediately think of:
Of course, trimmed wings. Is the whumper knowledgeable about it, or are they a total beginner and cut wayyy to much ?
If whumper likes whumpee's wings too much to damage them, then leather straps binding them. Or a harness.
A cage suspended in the air, too small.
A rendezvous at the groomer to take care of the feathers.
Or if whumper doesn't care about whumpee's hygiene, then whumpee quietly preening themselve in a corner, struggling to reach the feathers in their back.
Does your whumpee speak ? No they don't. They're only allowed to chirp. Or else, chop chop the vocal cords.
If winged creatures are rare, then whumper could pull their feathers just to sell them to collectors.
Post-rescue whumpee struggling to interact with their own, because of their damaged wings.
Sending whumpee to training centers, where there are whumpers worse than their owner.
Dying whumpee's wings in pink, or whatever humiliating colour. What if wing colours and feather patterns are important in avian society?
You didn't mention anything about caretaking, but I'm a sucker for it so:
Whumpee pulling their own feathers and giving them to caretaker as a token of trust.
Caretaker feeling whumpee's wings shake under their hands.
Caretaker waking up at three am to find whumpee perched on the furniture, the highest possible.
Wildlife rescue center that tries to reintroduce whumpee to their natural habitat and kindred.
Please tell me what you have in mind for your dove ! Also, you should definitely make a whump blog, and start writing about them.

the avian is young, probably about 12 years old, maybe more... the exams weren't very conclusive. He is fully mature, though, tall enought, a very well developed brain. He is smart and seems to really like puzzles.
The Palsy doesn't seem to have any physical cause. The electroencephalogram showed remains of a stroke - just as we had initially guessed - but that is not related to the loss of movement. Our best guess is that it's psychosomatic, an emotional response to the grave head trauma: he cannot move the small wing on his right ear, his right arm and is having difficulty moving his right leg, neck, jaw and the wings on his back. I wonder if the vocal cords were also affected.
his mood has been rather bubbly lately, very odd considering his condition and the fact he hasn't been moving much. I only saw him fully stand up by himself twice this week. he didn't attempt flight either. initially I thought he felt some type of disconfort on his right upper body, but I don't think that is the case... he doesn't seem bothered by it at all, aside from occasionally taking the limp wing on his ear off of his sholder (he did it so many times we decided to strap it on his head).
Overall he looks fine, none of the exams point to any psychological or physical issue. However, he is still... unsual... avians aren't all the same, obviously, but... avians are vocal, they sing and try comunicate as much as possible, yet he is quiet except for very few grunts once in a while. Avians love to fly. I know his condition is... well- staying still this long and not even attempting it... it's odd. Any other avian would be in tears at this point. Avians care a lot about their apearence, yet he isn't interested in it at all. he didn't seem to mind the mirror we placed in his habitat, his feathers are scrambled, he isn't grooming his wings properly... All he does all day is wait for our interactions... this is convenient, of course, I don't have to worry about him making a mess while I'm not looking, but It's abnormal... there's something wrong. I have to investigate this further - maybe less physical exams and more attempts in getting him to talk.

Avian headcanons [singing and mental health]
Most avians sing, and their singing can be an indicative of what they're feeling:
Avians who are depressed or trapped (maybe due to not being able to fly or just physically stuck somewhere for a long time) may seem happy due to they're cheerful singing, however it's important to look closer than the surface since they might be using extra happy songs to cope with frustration.
They might even be starting to delude themselves and losing grasp of reality.
Singing sad or eerie songs doesn't always mean sadness, in fact, most avians who do it are in a healthy mental state and are expressing their current emotions as a way to cope with them healthily.
Stopping them from doing so is actually very harmful and they will start to feel pressured to stay happy always, which won't last long, of course.
Although, Stay alert to avians who ONLY sing sad tunes. That probably means they are burned out and having to deal with too many difficult events.
The lack of singing usually means damage to the vocal cords. It is extremely rare for an avian to choose not to sing.
Rare, but still possible. If an avian has no problems with their throat or vocal cords, the lack of usually means a deeply serious mental health issue. Usually depression or paranoia for longer periods.
A depressed avian stops singing due to feeling like it is not worthwhile or not helping on any way, it is important to try and convince them slowly to get back to the habit since it usually helps them cope with negative feelings.
The paranoia, however is a much deeper issue... A avian specialist and a trusted friend/companion of the again must be in scene to help.
Avians also like to hear other species sing! Despite every avian having a different voice (specially because of different subspecies os avians) they also appreciate the voices of other species in action.
Humans, in specific are adored for their variety in voices as well.
Singing is a good way to try and inspire an avian to sing again... They enjoy singing along.

Avians are very emotional creatures, although they may have trouble communicating in human language, they feel "human" emotions.
Flying is a huge part of their life for both physical and emotional reasons.
Avians who have been severely injured, especially on the wings start to get restless and frustrated for not being able to fly.
If the injury is poorly treated or not treated at all it may cause the wings to deform. Making them unable to fly life.
This is basically death sentence to them. Even if they are being fed and cleaned, they become frustrated and even depressed. Usually this results on them passing away from sadness.
Finding a lovely partner is also something to keep in mind when it comes to avian's psyche. Some may never find one and be happy with themsey, but most are usually looking for someone to spend their time with.
That being said, rejecting or being rejected many times may lead to them giving up, sometimes even getting sick with loneliness.
Having a be taken away from them (be it either death or being artificially separated) is also a heartbreaking experience, some avians have been reported to not accept it and remain waiting for their partner to come back home.

Avian whumpee who belongs to a very social species of bird gets captured and separated from their flock. The unfamiliar environment they find themselves in is unnerving enough, but it's nothing compared to the whumpee trying to call for their family and only hearing their own voice echoing back
Self harm mention under the cut
A specific image that keeps popping into my head is the whumpee trying to deal with the stress by ripping their feathers out

Avian Characters
Some more interesting ways to develop a winged character.
Feathers. Feathers that don’t end at the wings, but spread across the skin, down the sides of their legs, arms, torso. Maybe even up their neck or under their eyes.
Feet that instead of toes, end in talons.
Wings that also serve as arms, maybe ending in a clawed hand like a bat.
Feathers that match their hair color.
Patterns across the feathers. Spots and speckles, stripes, shades of colors, etc. Almost all birds in real life have wings that vary in pattern and color.
Perhaps they’re covered from head to toe in feathers, but in areas like their face or torso, they are well groomed and short, almost passing as skin.
Eyes that are wild like a birds. Wide and staring at everything around them, as if anything could attack at any moment, bracing for flight.
Birds don’t have external ears, there’s an opening that is hidden by feathers. Perhaps your characters realize they’ve never seen your avians ears and grow curious, only to discover that they don’t exist. Not on the outside at least.
Noses that almost look like beaks in shape.
Tail feathers.
Multiple sets of wings, almost like how some angels are portrayed to have not just two, but maybe even four or six wings.
Wings in weird places. Along the curve of a wrist or ankle. Maybe even wings where ears would be.
Placement of wings affecting the efficiency of flight. Wings high up on the shoulders require more core strength to lift their legs as they fly. Wings on the lower back require strength in the arms and core to be able to hold up their heads to see. For this reason, wings that double as arms are often most desired. They give the most symmetry and grace when flying.
Characters born with deformed wings who long to taste the winds but never could. Maybe one day, another character invents a brace/ prosthetic to gift them and aid in their flight.
Characters with broken/ injured wings that can’t be fixed. Maybe even opting to remove them all together. The reminder weighing on their backs is too painful to keep. Sometimes it’s healthier to let go.
Perhaps your avians have their own holidays. Maybe they celebrate by splashing their wings with bright colors from berries or powders.
