Origin, origin and more origin: that's what it's all about. The provenance of The Sassenach Wild Scottish Gin comes from Crafty Distillery.
Tumblr media
Crafty Distillery is located on the outskirts of Newton Stewart, it is a modern grain to glass distillery producing spirits and offering panoramic views of the Galloway Hills. It's a self-distilled approach, making their own spirits with selected botanicals to create their own Hills & Harbour gin, or a fruity Smokey & Citrus liqueur or the limited edition Galloway Gin, SH's approach to his Gin.
The use of local ingredients such as crab apples 🍏 noble fir, and course Scottish water and the transparency of the process to create a gin is Master Distiller Craig Rankin’s little secret at Crafty. An example for the current gin culture in which consumers are often charged with expensive prices, but everything is made with industrial and characterless base alcohol.
An award-winning Galloway gin distillery is a place of The Sassenach Wild Scottish Gin. Newton Stewart's Crafty Distillery and his Master Distiller Craig Rankin create Scottish gins, Hills and Harbour Gin and GALLOWAY GIN smooth base spirit, along with local Juniper, Crab Apples, Crafty Estate Elderberry, Pepper Dulse, Damsons & Brambles.
That reflects the local area's botanical garden along with several botanicals and Crab apples 🍏🍎in abundance in Dumfries and Galloway.
Tumblr media
Crafty Distillery - Hills & Harbour Gin and GALLOWAY GIN
When you say Scotland, you say whisky, right? Wrong! Because a lot of beautiful GINS are also made in Scotland! Crafty Distillery (Hills & Harbour Gin and GALLOWAY GIN) in Newton Stewart in the south of Scotland is an example to see what makes this small distillery so special.
Tumblr media
Craig Rankin is the Gin Distillery Master and also the Distillery Manager at Crafty Distillery. It takes about two hours to drive from Glasgow to get here, so you might be feeling hungry. Luckily, Crafty's tasting room has a full refrigerator stocked with delicious local products from local entrepreneurs. They also offer the Galloway Picnic, which showcases some of the most beautiful products in Scotland. I assure you, it's all delicious! However, if you're not here to eat, you probably want to hear all about Hills & Harbour Gin, Galloway Gin and more.
Tumblr media
Craig Rankin, The Master Distiller creates their own recipes. In other cases, they are hired for their experience and expertise to continue the legacy of a recipe.
In 2013, owner Graham Taylor started to get a little itchy. As a lover of good gins, he found it annoying that so many distilleries simply buy their base alcohol from a wholesaler, instead of distilling it themselves. After a lot of planning with his brother Stephen and his father Billy, looking for the perfect location, raising all the money and designing a distillation installation, the first Hills & Harbour Gin flowed from the boilers in 2017.
Tumblr media
Vision & Botanicals
Their vision is simple: Craig creates tasty honest spirits for everyone who likes a tipple '. To achieve this, He created more than 90 gin recipes in 14 months to arrive at the final blend that they are today called Hills & Harbour Gin. All five basic flavours 3 are hit with their botanicals. The element of sweet comes from the dried mango, sour from the peel of orange, bitter from the noble fir and salt/umami from the bladderwrack seaweed. He also created a special sensation by using green Sichuan peppercorns and bay leaf. And their last ingredient was also very important: the audience!
Tumblr media
While they were still in the testing phase, Graig made and sent 100 packages with miniatures of their first gins, to see what people thought! This is how he created the Hills & Harbour Gin together with gin lovers.
Tumblr media
The noble fir, also called red fir is known as a Christmas tree 🌲 You can see in Galloway Forest Park pine trees profiled by distant lakes and peaks.
Origin, origin and more origin
The provenance of Crafty Distillery; that's what it's all about. Not only the use of local ingredients such as noble fir, bladderwrack seaweed and of course Scottish water are important; Transparency of the process to create a gin is also important. There is little secret here at Crafty. An example for the current gin culture in which consumers are often charged with expensive prices, but everything is made with industrial and characterless base alcohol.
Tumblr media
Smokey & Citrus Distilled Cocktail
The latest product from the Crafty Distillery stills is the Smokey & Citrus Distilled Cocktail. Made from smoked pineapple and burnt orange. It may not sound very tasty when you read it like this, but trust me , you want to taste this! The fruit is smoked and roasted, then pressed and the juice is distilled. This is then mixed with the Hills & Harbour Gin to form a special cocktail in a bottle.
Tumblr media
This is the location for the Wild Scottish Gin blend. The yellow line on the ground, next to the container with rhubarb and blaeberry, marks the interior of the Crafty Distillery responsible for producing SH’s gin. The Sassenach Wild Scottish Gin a distilled alcoholic drink flavoured with Scottish juniper, rhubarb, heather, Scots Pine resin, bramble leaf, blaeberry, crab apple and toasted oats,
Crafty Distillery was awarded the Scottish Gin Distillery of the Year 2022 at the Gin Cooperative Awards, where SH was a member of the judging panel. Craig Rankin is the Master Distiller behind SH’s Wild Scottish Gin, he created his gin. The production and distillation process takes place at Crafty Distillery in Newton Stewart in Dumfries and Galloway. The process involves pureeing, macerating, and straining pre-distillation to ensure the notes in SH’s gin.
Tumblr media
Master Distiller Graig Rankin plays a multifaceted role at the Crafty Distillery, encompassing expertise in distillation techniques, sensory evaluation, recipe formulation, and quality control. However, he or the Crafty Distillery is rarely mentioned by SH, aiming to give the impression that SH is the sole force behind Sassenach Wild Scottish Gin.
Scottish Gin Award Winner 2022
SH attended the 6th annual Scottish Gin Awards in November 2022 as a judge on the panel. He was especially delighted to sample the wide variety of Scottish gins that were sent for his consideration to his door, especially with the increasing number of gins and distilleries entering the competition across different categories. The same miniature gin samples that carried with him on his trips to America, preparing Gin Tonics in the hotels where he stayed, not behind the hotel bar. A player who appeared to be having fun as he was put through its pace by his new business.
It can be challenging to keep track of all the growing gin distilleries in Scotland, but this event was a great opportunity for him. With the Scottish Gin Cooperative’s help and support, He was able to identify potential future gin and distillery opportunities among the gold medal winners announced on August 29th of the same year. In this way, SH launched 🚀 his Wild Scottish Gin in 2023. It's clear that Sassenach Gin benefited greatly from this event of the Scottish Gin Cooperative and It's all quite not a coincidence when you connect the dots!
The Wild Scottish Gin is a type of London-style gin, and any brand of Distilled Gin follows the London Dry guidelines almost exactly. The Regulations establish the necessary minimum requirements, but producers are free to set the bar higher. The predominant flavour is juniper, and all other flavours must come from natural plants and fruits, so nothing synthetic can be added. Additionally, nothing can be added to the gin after distillation except for water and a small amount of sugar. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 So, The Sassenach Wild Scottish Gin isn't particularly innovative, as it follows the same process as a London Dry style.
The range includes London Dry gins from all over Scotland, many of which are made using hand-foraged botanicals which can be found close to the distillery. London Dry gins do not have to be made in London and the term 'London Dry' more refers to the process as opposed to the flavour or the location. To be classed as a 'London Dry', the base spirit must be distilled to a completely neutral spirit of 96% ABV, and all of the flavours must be added through the distillation.
There are excellent distilled gins and truly awful London Dry gins. However, It’s important to mention that if you do not know where you come from, then you don't know where you are, and if you don't know where you are, then you don't know where you're going. And if you don't know where you're going, you're probably going wrong and the sign of sheer incompetence impossible to ignore has been the information at the American Spirit Council of Tasters’ Awards where SH’s brand, and Great Glen Company or The Sassenach Wild Scottish Gin are not part of Loch Lomond’s group portfolio.
Anyway….If you have an interest in knowing where SH’s Wild Scottish Gin comes from, Crafty Distillery is open to Visit yourself. The Sassenach Wild Scottish Gin is not available for sale or tasting at Crafty Distillery. The distillery offers its brand of Gins, such as GALLOWAY GIN, which serves as the base for SH’s Wild Scottish Gin. You won't notice the difference and will still enjoy your visit.

Space Station Concepts: Power Tower
Tumblr media
"It would provide maximized user viewing opportunities, a clear area for Shuttle dockings and versatility in Station growth. The design was also less sensitive to changes in mass caused by the addition of modules to the Station. The 'Power Tower' station's main structure was to be 122 meters tall with 75 kW solar panels sticking 41 meters to either side of the centerline.
Tumblr media
"This is an artist's conception of the proposed 'Power Tower' space station configuration, shown with the Japanese Experiment Module attached. This model and several others were examined before deciding on the Space Station Freedom structure that was later abandoned in favor of the International Space Station. Date: June 19, 1985."
There were nine articulated attachments for external payloads dedicated to Earth and space observation. The initial Station would have had a crew of six working on 12-hour shifts, and feature two US-developed laboratory modules plus two habitation modules.
Tumblr media
A maximum of 18 hours/week of EVA 'spacewalks' would be permitted per astronaut. International modules had not yet been incorporated in the design. The 'Power Tower' assembly schedule would have required 12 Shuttle flights over a three-year period, starting in April 1992. The Space Station would support research in a man-tended capability from April 1993 onwards. But the schedule was already starting to slip as the Office of Management and Budget reduced the Fiscal 1985 budget from $235 million to $150 million. The slight reduction increased the total cost to $8.1 billion at 1984 rates ($11.4 billion in current-year dollars).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some observers were critical of the contractors' lack of independent involvement in the design process. They felt Station contractors did nothing but ape NASA's configurations in order to win the contract. In May 1987, former Space Station engineer Oliver Harwood testified in the Senate. 'Aerospace industry resources and capabilities were being squandered by 'rubber stamping' NASA designs instead of seeking independent and competitive solutions to system problems. Why were the artist's conceptions of eight major corporations so nearly identical? In a real competition seeking real answers there would be a different version for each of them.'
Tumblr media Tumblr media
NASA allocated all Space Station definition work between four 'Work Packages' managed by its Johnson, Marshall, Goddard and Lewis Space Centers in July 1984. Work Package 4, led by the Lewis Research Center, would investigate Space Station power options. The two leading contenders were photovoltaic solar arrays and solar thermodynamic generators. Solar thermodynamic generators would use huge parabolic dishes to heat a fluid, which then powered electric generators. They were more efficient than traditional photovoltaic solar panels, had a longer lifetime and generated less atmospheric drag. But they also had to be pointed to within 1.5 degrees of the Sun to generate electricity, and the concept had never been tried before. NASA awarded contracts worth a combined $144 million to six contractor teams in April 1985, including $20 million to Work Package 4 contractors TRW and Lockheed. The agency still had not decided whether solar thermodynamic generators or photovoltaic arrays would be chosen. Another concept from the late 1980s would generate auxiliary power from the Earth's magnetic field by connecting a generator to a long electrically conducting tether. The other end was attached to the Space Station.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The McDonnell-Douglas 'Power Tower' Space Station crew modules were 10.7 meters long with docking ports at both ends. They would have been assembled end-to-end in a racetrack-like configuration. Some engineers felt this could have created dangerous dead-ends inside the Station if a module had to be depressurized. The contractors paid considerable attention to habitability issues since each crew would live and work on the Space Station for 90 days before returning to Earth. Rockwell's crew module proposal put all the equipment inside storage racks in the middle of the module rather than on the walls.

The Blerdy Reader, seeing your excitement is soooooooo nourishing for the Sistah Scifi Team (like literally manna for the soul!)
The Sistah Scifi preorder campaign for Children of Anguish and Anarchy was our biggest campaign in our five year history by a factor of 2.5x, outpacing award winning titles like The World we Make by NK Jemisin and Mirrored Heavens by Rebecca Roanhorse because we didn't ask for enough bookplates from Nora and Rebecca. Sistah Scifi Siblings started pre-ordering Children of Anguish and Anarchy and the Legacy of the Orishas Trilogy from us in February!!!!
Before that, we spent MONTHS begging Tomi's publicist at Macmillan for signed bookplates and an in person event with @CityArtsandLectures. Macmillan declined an in person event. We just want to note that we probably would have sold 1500 additonal copies of Children of Anguish and Anarchy based on the reception of @JanelleMonae's The Memory Librarian.
However, Macmillan did agree to send 500 limited edition bookplates signed by Tomi Adeyemi (swipe to see Tomi signing 500 bookplates!), 25 double sided prints, and 25 Children of Anguish and Anarchy bookmarks. We distributed the prints and books marks randomly in our inventory. And, no, we do not have any more of either the prints or bookmarks. Sorry!
We are currently sold out out of Children of Anguish and Anarchy, but will have more in stock latest by August 1st. Join our email list for updates. We DO have *ten* sets of the Legacy of the Orisha trilogy in stock.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for rocking with us.
Y'all are absolutely, 💯, pure magic ✨️ 🌟 ✨️
Credit to @theblerdyreader Bookmail is the BEST mail!
📖 Children of Anguish and Anarchy (Legacy of Orisha #3) by Tomi Adeyemi
When I tell you that I ran into the house to see if my copy of Children of Anguish and Anarchy had been delivered. The level of excitement felt when I saw the purple package from @sistahscifi just waiting for me!! <Squeals with excitement and does a happy dance. 💃🏽 >
I’m soooo pleased with this edition. Sistah Scifi always has the absolute BEST service. I’m gushing over this special edition. The cover and spine design are gorgeous. Not to mention all the little extras and the signed bookplate. I can not wait to start reading!

Incredibly rare and iconic, award-winning book published by Esprit De Corp in 1987, designed by Japanese designer and ESPRIT art director Tamotsu Yagi and Roberto Carra (Fiorucci), with photographer Oliviero Toscani (Benetton, Fiorucci, Colors). Housed in it's original printed plastic sleeve, this first and only die-cut cover edition showcases all aspects of the design work of the pioneering Californian fashion company, ESPRIT, from the years 1984-1986. Through it's wonderful, quintessentially Californian 1980's post-modern design, this book profiles ESPRIT's product packaging, clothing and home-ware design, pop accessories, catalogue campaigns, advertisements, various identity and event collateral (party announcements , posters, flyers, business cards), apparel print graphics, and retail interior design by Ettore Sottsass and Sottsass Associates one-of-a-kind, visually dazzling book and a wonderful, rare piece of commercial design history that led ESPRIT and Tamotsu Yagi to win the AIGA design leadership award in 1986. In 1968, American environmentalist, adventure film-maker, conservationist and founder of The North Face outdoor clothing company, Douglas Tompkins, his wife Susie, and her friend Jane Tise began selling girl's dresses out of the back of a VW bus. In 1971, they incorporated the booming business under the name "Plain Jane" which later became ESPRIT, one of the hottest and most successful clothing companies of the 1970's, 1980's and 1990's.From the early days running out of the Tompkins' apartment in San Francisco, Douglas Tompkins titled himself "image director", overseeing all aspects of the company's image, from store design to catalog layout, while his wife served as design director. In 1984 the role of art director was taken up by Japanese designer Tamotsu Yagi. All facets of design were of primary importance to ESPRIT. From the iconic logo design by John Casado (who aslo designed the first Apple Macintosh Computer logo and album covers for the Doobie Brothers) to the ESPRIT store and office interiors by Ettore Sottsass (of Memphis Design Group and Sottsass Associates) to the fashion campaign photography of Oliviero Toscani (also well-known for his controversial campaigns for Benetton, work with Fiorucci, and co-founder of Colors magazine), ESPRIT was a total design vision of the 1980's .

Last December, weeks after assuming office, Argentina’s far-right president Javier Milei presented the National Congress with a package of reforms in response to its most dire economic crisis in decades. Milei, a former TV pundit and self-proclaimed “anarcho-capitalist” who campaigned on a promise to “blow up” the system, was following through on a promise to take whatever necessary measures to fix it.
Milei has hardly been shy about what measures he has in mind. Under the guise of “a public emergency” in the omnibus bill, Milei intends to assume sweeping new executive powers that would allow him to bypass Congress on major policy issues. The reforms—from the privatization of major industries to the gutting of labor protections—are a radical attempt to restructure the Argentine economy. They are also a pretext for consolidating power.
Yet the provision most likely to tighten Milei’s political grip is also among the least obvious. Originally found in a few short lines tucked into the otherwise sprawling bill, and now potentially being considered separately, is a wholesale change to the country’s electoral system. Milei’s proposal would adopt the American electoral system for its lawmakers, known as winner-take-all, in place of its proportional system of representation. That could tilt Argentina’s political field in a way that weakens the opposition and strengthens Milei’s own hand.
Like most democracies worldwide, Argentina elects its lawmakers through a proportional electoral system, where a party’s share of seats in a legislature roughly mirrors its share of the vote. In the 2023 national election, Milei’s La Libertad Avanza (LLA)—a coalition of far-right parties—won 28 percent of the vote and, in turn, 27 percent of the lower chamber’s seats up for renewal. While proportional systems vary considerably in their design from one country to the next, as a general principle, all aim to ensure that seats correspond to votes. They do so by electing multiple representatives from each legislative district, and then allocating seats to parties based roughly on their vote share: If a party in a six-seat district wins 50 percent of the vote, it would win three of the six seats.
Only a few major democracies, including the United States, use winner-take-all, the main alternative to proportional representation. Winner-take-all systems instead use single-member districts, where dominant parties often enjoy an outsized advantage by securing seats out of proportion to their support. Consider a state like Massachusetts, where the dominant Democratic Party typically wins around two-thirds of the statewide vote but is awarded 100 percent of the state’s congressional seats. Republicans don’t constitute a majority in any of the state’s nine districts, so they are unable to win the single seat available—shutting them out from representation entirely. Nationally, it’s common for one party to win more U.S. House seats than their vote share would warrant.
Certain authoritarian leaders have picked up on the benefits afforded to them by the American style system. In 2011, new electoral rules in Hungary designed by Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz party introduced single-member districts for more than half of legislative seats. It then won 67 percent of seats with only 45 percent of the vote. In both 2014 and 2018, Fidesz secured supermajorities with less than half the vote. In El Salvador, Nuevas Ideas, led by Nayib Bukele (the self-styled “world’s coolest dictator”), recently slashed the size of its legislature from 84 to 60 members, making it more akin to America’s unusually small Congress—another way to produce nonproportional results—and has promised to adopt winner-take-all elections next in an effort to dilute the opposition. In 2009, as public opinion began to turn against Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez, his party reduced the number of legislators elected under proportional rules. Chavez’s party safeguarded its majority in the legislature despite losing majority support, winning 57 percent of seats with 48 percent of the vote.
As Harvard political scientist Pippa Norris explains, winner-take-all systems “manufacture majorities” by design, exaggerating a dominant party’s electoral wins. In Great Britain—the system’s country of origin—postwar governments received, on average, 54 percent of seats on 45 percent of the vote. For a political party committed to democracy, a seat bonus may be harmless. But for one committed to dismantling it, it offers a dangerous leg-up. Changes to an electoral system can offer a veneer of democracy—elections still happen and votes are still counted—while allocating power to a party out of proportion to its actual support.
Winner-take-all systems, unlike proportional ones, are also uniquely vulnerable to gerrymandering, amplifying the seat bonus effect. After the introduction of single-member districts in Hungary, Fidesz took the pen on map-drawing, and in 2014 won 88 percent of single-member seats with 45 percent of the vote. Milei intends to do the same. His proposal for switching to winner-take-all is coupled with language that hands responsibility for drawing new districts to the executive branch, led by him. Milei is likely taking a cue from the American experience with gerrymandering—but also from Argentina’s. In the 1950s, populist president Juan Perón briefly replaced Argentina’s proportional system with winner-take-all. Aggressive gerrymandering by Perón’s party followed, slashing the opposition’s seats from 47 to 14 in a single election—despite increasing its own vote share by only a couple of percentage points.
A switch to winner-take-all in Argentina could help the LLA to juice-up its electoral prospects without actually having to appeal to a majority of voters. But it could also make it structurally more difficult for the opposition to fight back. Proportional electoral systems typically give rise to multiparty democracies, like Argentina’s. Winner-take-all systems, by contrast, tend to generate two-party systems, like America’s. A switch to winner-take-all would almost certainly flatten Argentina’s multiparty landscape—shrinking the playing field of opposition and consolidating the right behind Milei.
Argentina’s politics are organized around coalitions of parties, and the two main coalitions—the center-left Peronists and center-right Radical Civic Union (UCR)—dominate. In 2023, the LLA, an insurgent coalition of the far-right, captured the presidency, but won only 15 percent of congressional seats, and combined with allies, one-third. Another third belongs to the center-right UCR and its allies. Under winner-take-all rules that encourage two-partyism, the LLA could pave a path toward consolidating the right—and around itself. Indeed, in the United States, an insurgent far-right did just that, consolidating conservatives behind a new far-right leader within the only party available to them. It is unlikely that the LLA will jump from a minority to a majority anytime soon without some mechanism that forces the right to line up behind a single banner.
As most of the democratic world trends toward proportional representation, Argentina’s reversal would mark a major step backward. But that, most likely, is the point. In democracy after democracy, multiparty coalitions have been instrumental as a bulwark against authoritarianism. Last year in Poland, for instance, a pro-democracy coalition put aside its differences to defeat the authoritarian-nationalist Law and Justice party—placing Poland on a path to reverse years of democratic backsliding. In 2015 in Finland, the dominant center-right party formed a coalition government with the authoritarian-nationalist True Finns, which abandoned its most extreme promises when forced to compromise with its more moderate partners. For now, Argentine politics is still a multiparty game, and the LLA—still a minority outfit—must contend with its country’s coalitional politics. But Milei is eyeing to change it.
In the lead-up to Argentina’s Dirty War, military governments turned to violence, coups, and outright bans on the opposition, then went on to kill more than 30,000 Argentines. Milei appears sympathetic to Argentina’s decade of dictatorship, playing down the military’s atrocities as “excesses.” His vice president argues that both sides were to blame. Perhaps unsurprisingly, in response to the hundreds of thousands of Argentines who have taken to the streets since his election, Milei’s reform package proposes that any “intentional and temporary congregation of three or more persons” be considered a demonstration and punishable by up to six years in prison. His security services are already cracking down on dissent.
Milei may yet flirt with this darker period of Argentine history. But there may also be less of a need. Electoral systems are a democracy’s software, humming quietly in the background and rarely paid much mind. It’s for this reason that tinkering with them can be appealing: They operate on outcomes subtly. They can generate a helpful seat bonus that turns a minority win into a majority one, or give a party the power to gerrymander, or make it all but impossible for other parties to survive—all done lawfully and without much fanfare. Manipulated smartly, they offer a quieter path to more power.

It will be 560 pages with a new foreword and introduction alongside Philip Hoare's essay from Catalogue.

Newly reconfigured into a literary format, this revised and expanded edition now chronicles the entire visual output of Pet Shop Boys from 1984 to 2024. SOME OF THE GREATEST TYPOGRAPHY EVER UTILIZED IN GRAPHIC DESIGN.
PIC INFO: Spotlight on a Campari Soda banner titled "Dosé par Campari." Artwork by Kobra Chiozzani, c. 1950.
DESCRIPTION: "The award-winning and innovative design of Campari Soda's packaging is on display in this midcentury Italian poster. Campari Soda's iconic bottle shape was designed by Italian Futurist Fortunato Depero, who inverted the shape of the glass used to drink the beverage into the shape of the bottle -- a simple, yet groundbreaking innovation.
This banner design features great typography and its format is perfect for over a bar. Gaspar Campari first produced Bitter Campari in 1860 in Novara, Italy. The liquor falls under the category of "Bitters," which is traditionally prepared as a mixture of water, alcohol, and botanical extracts - in this case, orange peel. Bitters were originally developed as patent medicines, but are now used as digestifs.
The drink is colored with carmine dye that provides the unique red coloring. Campari Soda was developed in the 1920s and was first referred to as an "Americano", after the American tourists visiting Italy to avoid Prohibition at home. In 1932 it was bottled and sold as the world's first ever packaged cocktail and renamed "Campari Soda."
