i believe that it was said that abilities are awoken from an intense state of emotion or desperation. the bsd wiki says they can manifest or sometimes people are born with them.

i really think this is a great time to show an awakening!! aya is a child who is likely very scared right now, her awakening to something would be really impactful for her as a character i think. the fact that she is named after an author and not a book character implies she will awaken to an ability eventually, so im really looking forward to that!
