Unpopular opinion: there aren't enough fanfics that ship Lucifer with other characters in the Lucifer fandom (for example: Lucifer/Linda, Lucifer/Maze).

i confess: i don’t generally multiship in a fandom. i don’t generally pay attention to more than one fandom at a time, even. so i am invested in deckerstar and happy to see thousands of fic about them so i can fill my insatiable lust.

however! variety is the spice of life and all, i think having more ships is a good thing. i’ve seen some lucifer/maze and some lucifer/dan, but that’s about the extent of it.

actually i’m mostly interested in azrael/ella. azraella??? whatever, i’m down. absolutely down for it. there is NO fic for it and i’m being forced to write it MYSELF like some kind of WRITER.

Ella’s most recent appearance really kickstarted my interest in this theory again. I know the writers don’t have the best track record with mental illness, but it’s weird to put in a line as cliche as “the voices” and not play with it to some degree in this day and age. So, here’s a quick rundown of all the supporting evidence that Ella is Death and Death is Ella. 

Azrael’s blade was unguarded enough for Uriel to take it, AND she didn’t come looking for it afterwards. This is a notable dereliction of duty for the angel of death. She remains unseen and doesn’t seem to have noticed her blade is gone.

Lucifer makes a point of stating Azrael is his sister, not brother, and that she’s “not a sweet peach”. 

In the comics written by Neil Gaiman that tied into the original Lucifer comics, Death was the most human acting and empathetic of her siblings, if a bit goth. She also spent one day out of every century living and dying as a human. 

We know Ella was a troubled child with an almost superhuman intellect. She felt pulled to crime at a young age, as young as middle school, and excelled at biology, probability, and mechanics. She knows how to pick locks, has spent time in Vegas and got in trouble with casinos there, but eventually turned around and got a degree in forensic science. 

She’s still a very reckless young woman with a lot of smarts, but her family and her faith ground her to some degree. Her aunt was a nun whose advice she respects, her grandmother taught her a lot, and she still looks out for her brother and goes to services. 

She bonds instantly with Lucifer and despite a few quick flirtations they settle into a friendly relationship easily. Ella trusts him fast and they get along. 

Her enthusiasm for death is boundless. She loves a good crime scene, doesn’t mind blood, and acts out murder techniques with glee. 

She really likes classic rock, wearing black and pink, and threatening people who hurt her friends. 

Perhaps most tellingly, she seems to struggle with an inner conflict that hasn’t been fully delved into yet. She mentions having “a lot of darkness in here” so the voices line isn’t the first time Ella has mentioned a nature that seems counter to her. While the Ella we know fits the Death of the DC comics quite well, that inner darkness might be more comparable to the Azrael Lucifer describes. 

The show writers haven’t minded grabbing bits and pieces from the comics in the past and I think that Azrael spending a lifetime as a human would explain her absence and Ella’s odd nature and incredible intellect. I love Ella Lopez either way, she’s really grown on me, but I think it’s a good way to delve deeper into her psyche without relying on staid cliches about mental illness.
