i do think that toph and zuko would get closer after the war just because sokka is immediately like “you NEED to advise zuko that guy cannot read a room to save his life and you can literally tell when people are lying” and so she begrudgingly stays with him in the palace because sokka makes a very cogent point and zuko definitely could use a human polygraph in his retinue. but mostly she enjoys the job because she gets to work with her best friend sokka, who is of course zuko’s senior advisor, so whenever he leaves the fire nation to attend to other matters and she’s still stuck there because zuko needs his lie detector, she and zuko just sit there together like “when is sokka coming back i miss sokka…” (as all of sokka’s friends are wont to do). and since they’re both quite chaotic and feed into each other’s more restless, impulsive tendencies, they’re just like “we should run away we should change our names and become pirates we should open a playhouse and put on operas we should learn how to blow glass with our bending we should become traveling salesmen who sell homemade glassware we should go work on a fishing barge.” and then they remember that they can’t do that because technically they “run a country” and “if they left the entire nation, and possibly the whole world, would collapse” which “would make sokka mad,” so they can’t do it. so they just stay put and complain together about how much more work they have to do and how much less fun it is when sokka isn’t around. to amuse herself toph starts building even more underground tunnels all across the palace, but eventually she’s exhausted the number of tunnels she can build so she extends her reach until the tunnels run all the way across the city. and when sokka finally gets back she tells him all about it, and together they invent the first subway system.

he has a traveling food critic column and a published haiku collection and fifteen new inventions patents and is just as fundamental for bringing on an age of peace and prosperity as anyone else. so yeah emerging technologies advisor, poet, swordsman, inventor, councilor, storyteller, warrior, artist, white lotus member, food blogger, pai sho champion, trendsetter sokka of the southern water tribe ftw forever amen

Azula got insomnia after the war, Ty Lee usually sings her songs of "Trustfully in Love" to let her sleep

One time, when they were still kids, Mai confessed her feelings to Azula but she thought she was talking about Zuko

Meanwhile they were on the Earth kingdom Mai and Ty Lee take turns to help Azula with her hair

Mai is actually a really good cook, she can do something that could compete against the palace food, and she enjoys being able to use her abilities with knives on something that gives happiness to her girls; Ty Lee likes baking cute things like cookies and muffins, she can do other stuff but she didn't enjoy making them; Azula is banned from the kitchen

When they were kids Azula watched Mai as her big sister, Azula can barely remember that but Mai remembers the little Azula called her big sister CLEARLY

Before Ty Lee leaves to the circus she and Mai both know that the other has a crush on Azula, they try to fight each other for her for a while but they start growing a crush on each other too

takes too much time for Azula to trust Mai and Ty Lee again but she loves them too much to be resentful forever

The first time Mai notices her crush on Azula is when she defends her love for throw-knife against her mother

After the war neither Mai nor Ty Le wanted to see Azula, both were too angry to see her, they even started to distance each other, Ty Lee got all of herself on her new friends on the Kyoshi warriors, Mai just tried to keep her mind busy to don't think about her, she even date kei lo for a couple of months before Azula escape the asylum.

When they heard about Azula's new little group of mascaraed terrorist friends (?), they couldn't avoid the feeling of being replaced

listen, as much as i love azutara where azula is the taller one, the pure comedy of short azula makes me giggle. i present two scenarios:

1. katara is significantly taller than azula

azula, too lazy to search for a stool, jumping and trying to grab the book she wants in the library: whoever decided to build these shelves so high will face my wrath.

katara, materializing out of the blue: would you like some help?

azula: i am perfectly capable of retrieving my own book, thank you very much.

katara: i know you are, but it would be easier if you just let me-

azula: NO.

(she eventually gives in and lets katara get the book down for her.)

2. katara is BARELY taller than azula (and also a menace)

katara, healing azula after a fight: maybe if you weren’t so short you would have gotten a swollen lip instead of a broken nose…

azula: i am not short!

katara: you really are though.

azula: you are less than an inch taller than me.

katara: i still bet you wish you had that extra height when that guy punched you.

azula, leaning close: you’re insufferable.

katara: insulting me doesn’t change that you’re vertically challenged.

anyways in both these scenarios they’re rivals to friends(?) to actually friends (but won’t admit it) to lovers and no i will not be taking criticism.

i’ve always kind of assumed that lo and li are azulon’s younger twin sisters and that’s why they were foisted off on azula, because she’s also a younger sister to the crown prince. but the fact that we never actually see them firebend is strange, because it implies either that nonbenders are instructing one of the greatest firebenders in the world, or that they are firebenders who simply do not firebend. and i think that the latter is more interesting, because it reflects how their position as elderly women devalues any firepower they might provide to the empire, passive and subdued even as they train ozai’s favorite weapon.

they are the ones to most overtly illustrate azula’s precarious relationship to femininity, after all. for example, noting the position of her hair after she successfully lightningbends in “the avatar state,” or emphasizing azula’s beauty when they introduce her in “the awakening.” and it’s clear that azula doesn’t really like them, dismisses and avoids them whenever she gets the chance. she can’t even tell them apart. their very existence is almost a humiliation. a reminder to azula that this is who she is destined to become once she lives past her usefulness. not the imperious azulon, her namesake, raised above on a fiery dais, but his sisters, insignificant and functionally powerless.

so of course “almost isn’t good enough,” of course “one hair out of place” is a failure. the only way azula can prove her worth to the empire she has devoted her entire self to in a way that matters is, perhaps, by being perfect, by being better and stronger than the discarded women who came before her. but that, too, is a delusion, that any amount of excellence will reward her in a way that compensates for the erosion of her very humanity. and yet, it’s all she has to cling to. so she gives it her all to excel within a system that will never really care about her because she has deliberately been made incapable of imagining an alternative. of simply recognizing the system for the failure that it is, conceptualizing a world beyond the bars of her gilded cage, and leaving.

Would you have any thoughts about the Gaang in a modern au (either with or without bending), especially jobs? I legit love how there’s never been a consensus of how they’d live, especially job wise, in the fandom — except for Katara, she is absolutely a doctor, surgeon, ER badass. Personally, I love the thought of Zuko as a child protective agent, and Sokka as a high school teacher, not just for the dramatic Zukka potential lol haha either way, I’d love to hear your thoughts!
