ok ok so azutara au where after a long reign of tyrant firelords zuko claims the throne after ozai’s mysterious death. one of the first things zuko does is try to reconcile with the other nations and this includes helping to restore the southern water tribe. and hakoda’s like “ah perfect. you want to help? marriage alliance. i have a daughter but i do have to warn you she’s a force to be reckoned with and if you do anything to piss her off i will kill you.” and zuko’s like “…um…ok” and agrees to an arranged marriage.

so katara shows up to the fire nation to meet her betrothed and get to know the nation more with sokka as her “chaperone” (she can handle herself, sokka just wanted to come for funsies). and she’s pissed. pissed that she has to mary some dude she doesn’t even know, much less love.

katara can’t stand zuko but has to put up with him for a bit because sokka and azula became fast friends and are currently trying to develop high tech weaponry that could potentially start a war. and neither katara nor zuko want that.

katara has a rocky relationship with azula at the beginning, but the two of them end up sparring together almost every day and build up a friendship. it’s through these early morning sessions that katara learns that azula is both the fire nation princess by day and fire lord zuko’s most important spy by night. she learns that azula might be a bit of a bitch, but she’s actually an awkward sweetheart. and azula is more than willing to take katara out exploring (read: on missions) at night.

eventually katara ends up yelling at zuko because she really, really doesn’t want to marry him. and zuko’s like “katara i don’t want to marry you either! i’m gay! i like men! i just thought a marriage pact would be the best form of alliance!”.

unfortunately, katara agrees with the alliance part. so she puts up with the arranged marriage shenanigans. entirely for the sake of the alliance. and definitely not because she’s got the biggest crush on azula and is trying to spend as much time with her as possible. and hey, maybe she could marry azula instead. she definitely wouldn’t be opposed to that.

anyways. i’m thinking about writing this. how do we feel?

I'm so happy I found your blog. I had no idea Azutara was a legitimate ship in the ATLA fandom until today! I love the aesthetic of bloodbending Katara with Azula's blue fire - a kind of inverse of the blue/water character + red/fire character trope. I have an assassin!Katara AU I've been thinking about where both she and Azula are rather morally gray, and they meet during the full moon during an attempted assassination of someone in the Fire Nation royal family (I'm not sure who). I like the idea of Azula, who's used to being in control and in command during conflicts with an enemy, being rendered completely helpless for the first time in her life by Katara's bloodbending. I imagine that it would be terrifying for her, the complete loss of control, and that the moment would stick with her long after Katara is either captured or escapes. Both Azula and Katara are pretty overpowered in this for self-indulgent purposes, and I like the idea of Katara only being captured because Azula stalled her long enough for the sun to rise. They'd definitely want to interrogate her to determine if she's working alone and whether she poses a significant threat. Maybe she's part of a powerful rebel group (the freedom fighters, perhaps? who knows) and the Fire Lord decides to let her live only on the condition that she helps them track down the rest of the resistance. And, of course, Azula gets assigned lead on the mission. So that leaves one month until the next full moon. One month of Katara and Azula begrudgingly working together (Katara, of course, trying her best to steer them down the wrong trail and fuck with their plans) and unwillingly growing closer. The budding friendship(? ish?) encourages some character development on Azula's part, to the point where she gets conflicted about the Fire Nation's part in the war. (Maybe Katara tells her about her mother. Maybe Azula relates to the righteous, indignant anger of desperately wanting something that's rightfully yours and never getting it.) I don't know if Zuko is there or not. I like the idea of him still being on the hunt for Aang and then encountering the Azula/Katara duo somehow. But I for sure want Katara to escape on the next full moon, when the month is up, and for Azula to stay behind despite wanting to run away with her. So when they meet later on the battle field it's the classic, tragic, sapphic-enemies-with-complex-feelings-about-each-other situation. Sorry this got so long! I've been wanting to talk about this and I saw your post asking for asks! Sorry if I overstepped! I love your Azutara content!

OH THIS IS GOOD. definitely beyond my writing capabilities as i am an impatient person and i know something like this would be at least 50k words. if not more. and im also too busy to commit to something i intend on making long.

ok ok azutara headcanons GO:

these are not canon compliant cause we know how they meet and feel about each other and all that in canon lol

- azula isn’t evil by any means! yeah she’s a little bit of an asshole (or maybe a lot), but she was also a kid raised in an abusive household. katara on the other hand is a proud, self-proclaimed lovable asshole.

- they’ve been in the same social circle since they’re both kids of world leaders, but they weren’t fond of each other as kids.

- they forget about each other and meet again years later! when they’re adults, because you will never catch me writing an au where they’re 14. in canon, whatever. but i’m more comfortable writing characters closer to my age! you will also never catch me writing smut btw, it also makes me uncomfy.

- also azula has been in therapy since she became a legal adult and she has a good relationship with zuko because of it.

- so let’s say they meet again when they’re in their undergrad. neither of them recognize each other, both of em think of the other as “the smartass girl from my gen psych class”

- katara’s in bio pre-med but is 100% that girl that has three minors and a certificate in something. probably things like sociology, anthropology, women’s studies, etc.

- azula’s a business major. not by choice. i could definitely see her in something like forensic science or chemistry instead.

- anyways, they have a shared gen ed class and both of em are really into it because they both have mommy issues! which is why when they’re forced to work together on a project they decide they hate each other again.

- they realize that they knew each other in childhood when zuko and sokka walk into the water siblings’ shared apartment while katara and azula are fighting over making a powerpoint.

- katara makes an offhand comment about ozai being an asshole and azula just. loses it. bursts out crying. and katara’s there panicking like “oh my god what do i DO”

- katara ends up comforting azula and opens up about her mom to try and make azula feel less alone in the family trauma department. azula thinks she’s a dumbass but in a tsundere way where she secretly respects katara but won’t admit it.

- after that the two of em start hanging out out of class more often and (shocking, i know) enjoying each other’s presence

- katara realizes she has a crush first. it happens when they go to present their project and katara freezes up out of nowhere (which is so out of character for her) and azula immediately picks up her sentence and helps katara get through her part of the presentation

- so disaster bi katara ends up pining for at least a year because azula’s a dumbass who is subzero in flirting skills and completely oblivious

- azula’s also completely unaware that she’s gay as hell

- so azula realizes that she likes women…no not women…katara…at some sort of banquet where azula’s receiving a scholarship or smth and katara starts cheering for her from the audience (azula was tense, katara lightened the mood)

- so azula’s on stage having her gay awakening like “oh my god i’m in love with this dumbass who’s making a scene at this formal event and oh my god…” and as soon as she gets off stage she grabs katara’s hand and pulls her outside

- katara’s panicking and thinking azula’s pissed and goes to apologize but azula just. kisses her.

- katara’s immediate reaction is “fckin took you long enough”

- azula immediately goes red and is like “kat i realized i was gay less than five minutes ago please let me live”

- and therefore is subject to teasing for the rest of her life. the end.

Can you do an azutara fic AU where Katara is in Sports Med club/ class and Azula is on a sports team? Doesn’t matter what sport. Perhaps they have a bit of an academic rivalry as well?

if i’m completely honest, sports are iffy for me…as i don’t know how a ton of them work lol. but i really like this idea, so i might have to consider basketball or something. college level 100% because i know WAY too much about bones and nobody interested in medical stuff is touching those until university. and also because i fractured my ulna as a kid playing basketball.

and YES to the academic rivalry, it’s one of my favorite tropes.

Azutara Ask Au/scenario could take place during book 2 or 3 or perhaps even a few years after the war.

So what if Azula and Katara are in a battle. While they’re fighting they get interrupted by an annoyed spirit. The displeased spirit with his rest disturbed, decides to curse Azula and Katara.

This curse did not remove either of their bending abilities. Instead the spirit switched them. Or rather forcefully gave Azula and Katara each other’s bending powers. Rendering Azula a Water bender, and Katara a Fire bender.

What happens from there? Do Azula and Katara continue to fight? Do they freak out? Do they decide to stay together and teach each other? How/when does a relationship form?

oh i love this. ok so in my head this happens in book two. in the catacombs maybe? after katara revives aang because i want him to survive and there’s no way azula as a freshly minted waterbender could do that.

anyways. both of them flip when they realize their bending switched. katara is a natural with firebending because she’s a super passionate person. azula can’t waterbend for shit.

they end up teaching each other basics because katara is like “ok i hate her but i can’t just leave her defenseless” (having a lapse in judgement and forgetting that azula can do hand-to-hand combat) and azula’s somewhat worried that angry katara would set her on fire if she refused to help.

canon stuff proceeds as normally but with random katara and azula fights thrown in there for “training”.

somehow (i haven’t decided how) azula shows up at the same time the combustion bender shows up and their bending goes back to normal. this is mostly because i refuse to not include a bloodbending arc for katara.

once again proceed with canon until the final agni kai. katara, being the prodigy she is, has figured out azula’s technique by experiencing it herself. she manages to take down azula quicker than in canon, but the azula reaction is the same (absolutely gut wrenching).

zuko does the asylum thing but katara is 100% against it and fully decides to break azula out (i’m thinking painted lady style since that episode wouldn’t happen in this au??) and they become travel buddies! azula still hates katara but also finds her attractive (although she’d never admit it) and they get along like a house on fire for awhile but we do get an azula redemption arc cause i said so!

i’d have to think about how that happens, but for a while the katara/azula dynamic is murder buddies without the murder (katara says no). so basically vigilante stuff. that’s legal because zuko and aang are too scared of katara to say no to her medically advised azula therapy program (azula in a rage room, basically).

but yeah it’s definitely super slow burn. katara falls first, azula falls harder type of beat. i don’t think they’d get together until they were at least 18, azula definitely wouldn’t be in the headspace for a healthy romantic relationship for years.

i am now considering writing this.

katara, materializing out of the blue: would you like some help?

azula: i am perfectly capable of retrieving my own book, thank you very much.

katara: i know you are, but it would be easier if you just let me-

azula: NO.

(she eventually gives in and lets katara get the book down for her.)

2. katara is BARELY taller than azula (and also a menace)

katara, healing azula after a fight: maybe if you weren’t so short you would have gotten a swollen lip instead of a broken nose…

azula: i am not short!

katara: you really are though.

azula: you are less than an inch taller than me.

katara: i still bet you wish you had that extra height when that guy punched you.

azula, leaning close: you’re insufferable.

katara: insulting me doesn’t change that you’re vertically challenged.

I haven’t seen one of these in a while so I decided it was a necessity and made one myself!

Aang: “Listen, I don’t normally condone violence but I would LOVE to square up with my Zionist professor.”

INCREDIBLY REAL especially cause I’m rewatching ATLA right now and what do you MEAN Koh hasn’t seen the Avatar in 800-900 years? Kuruk, whose entire thing was trying to defeat Koh to save his fiancée, was three Avatars before Aang. It’s canon that he died really young. Like the man was 33. It’s also canon that Kyoshi lived to be 230 years old. Roku died when he was 70! And Aang was frozen for 100 years when he was 12…

If you add all those numbers up it equals 445. WHAT DO YOU MEAN 800-900 YEARS?

I think it’s canon that time works differently in the spirit world. But you’re telling me that spirit world time moves at about half the speed of the human world? And the Avatar is the bridge between the two worlds? I hope every Avatar is born with the ability to not only bend all the elements and cross into the spirit world, but also hella mental math skills worthy of dealing with two separate time systems.

A lot of the early timeline stuff for ATLA I'm struggling with could be solved with adding just one more generation to both Roku and Sozin's lines.

Because what do you mean Roku's daughter had to be like 70 when she gave birth to Ursa??? What do you mean Sozin was 82 when Azulon was born??? Why did the creators do this me???

Understandable! I’m not a big fan of (specifically romantic) Zutara myself, I see them as having more of a frenemies type of relationship than anything. Or siblings-in-law who claim to just put up with each other for Sokka’s sake but are secretly besties.

I was thinking more about the similarities between Katara and Azula (prodigies, little sisters, heavily affected by the loss of their moms, etc) despite them being worlds apart in how they handle those similarities than anything with my original post. Their similarities are one of the reasons I’m a huge sucker for redeemed!Azula and Katara being close (and usually gay lol). The scene in the final Agni Kai where Katara freezes the two of them in water just reminds me of a solar eclipse. The moon stops the energy of the sun, even if it’s just for a short period of time. It’s a moment that made me stop and think “hmm, these two are so similar despite being worlds apart, I really like that dynamic” the first time I watched ATLA.

Azula overhears this and despite not being on the best terms with Katara, decides to bond with her over their shared judgement of Sokka’s taste in men.

They spend a lot of time together and Zukka are sweating because nobody else understands how terrifying it is that their sisters have become friends. The fear exists for months. They’re too preoccupied with making sure Katara and Azula don’t blow up the palace that they both completely miss the fact that Azutara definitely started dating.

Katara wants to tell them. Azula started a betting pool on what will finally get their brothers to notice that they’re together…with Toph and Suki. Azula thinks Katara doesn’t know about the betting pool, but she definitely does. She had Suki anonymously place money on the “Azula and Katara will have to kiss in public for Sokka and Zuko to realize” option.

so i’ve been on my atla bs once again, and while rewatching today i got the lovely thought that azula reminded me of a specific kpop idol and spiraled from there. so. here’s my personal list of kpop idols as atla characters!!

these are mostly based on vibes and/or visuals. by no means do i mean to make idols i think are similar to the show’s antagonists out to be bad people!!! i will give an explanation behind my thoughts as well.

also disclaimer, i know next to nothing about boy groups, so please spare me lol

seungkwan (seventeen) as aang

- once again, i know nothing about boy groups

- i did however watch the devil’s plan (amazing show by the way, it’s on netflix) and the positive but still very determined vibe seungkwan brought to the show reminded me of aang

- also, this selfie of him reminds me of the one scene with aang in the flower crown

jihyo (twice/soloist) as katara

- extremely hard workers who trained for years to get to where they are now

- have natural leadership abilities and are total mom friends

- would cuss someone out if they were very annoyed

- thanks to jeongyeon and her water bottles, jihyo is actually a pro waterbender already (jeongyeon is pakku but without the misogyny. the entire pakku/katara fight is just a compilation every single concert encore where jeong and jihyo bicker)

- this honestly just felt right

- every time i see a clip of chan on a live i end up laughing

- i have also heard from stays that skz would collapse without chan and i very much think the same of sokka since he’s the ideas guy

- would do something out of spite but is also very protective of friends

- toph would also wear that shirt and pretend she didn’t know what it said even though sokka told her

heejin (artms/soloist) as suki

- i mostly thought of this because heejin and hyunjin are former loona members and good friends. which would make the scene where suki saves toph from drowning even funnier imo

- but also have you SEEN this woman’s muscles??? i have full confidence that heejin could handle her own in a fight

- every sapphic i know who’s seen atla had a crush on suki growing up and every sapphic loona stan i’ve met (which is most loona stans) has had a crush on heejin

- heejin’s lore in loonaverse is basically being a god and i personally equate that to suki

- also, they’re dorks

siyeon (dreamcatcher) as azula

- LITERALLY THE REASON I THOUGHT OF THIS POST (specifically vision era hello???) LOOK AT HER

- siyeon is at the scene of the crime like 90% of the time something chaotic happens in dreamcatcher so i can fully imagine her cosplaying azula and running around with sparklers or something

- she’s also very good at looking evil in mvs so i think she could play azula

- that scene in the deja vu music video right before the last chorus when fire shoots up from behind her? she’s literally a firebender

seonghwa (ateez) as zuko

- i know absolutely NOTHING about ateez aside from a couple of their title tracks but this man looks so much like siyeon i couldn’t resist

- idk i just feel like they’d be good at being the fire disaster siblings

- he also looks like he’d eat up the “the scar is not on the wrong side” line for some reason???

- was probably an angsty teenager at some point

miyeon (gidle) as ty lee

- nobody can out femme either of these two

- cute extroverts who could also be deadly (like imagine x-file miyeon during boiling rock)

- i feel like ty lee would LOVE doing dance challenges with anyone and everyone

bibi (soloist) as mai

- i am fully aware that bibi isn’t an idol but i couldn’t resist

- she just gives the mai vibes honestly. you know that trope where the guard asks the character to hand over all of their weapons and just stands there and stares as said character pulls out knives from everywhere? that is both bibi and mai

- bibi is also the queen of every concept so i fully believe she could probably play the entire cast of atla in a chaotic one-woman show
