@barkskins meet boone love what you do.
Tumblr media
boone wasn't even supposed to have met jasper. he had promised to pick up a book for claire, and after putting it off for way too long, he'd gone looking for the damn thing. he found jasper instead. well, he still found the book, but he found jasper and he couldn't stop coming back. books for claire, that's what he called it. he had to run and grab books for claire, because he couldn't just say he had to go and flirt with the cute bookseller, who might not even be aware that the last book boone had read was scar tissue by anthony kiedis back when he was eighteen or something. it was good, but books didn't hold his interest. claire inherited all the brains, his was never smart enough to stick with a plot all the way through. "hi, hello! i am back." boone called out with a big smile, the yellow bookbag claire had gifted him for christmas three years earlier on his shoulder.

We’re going through this phase of fandom right now where people willfully ignore the sexist implications of female characters being shafted into housewife/mother roles or disempowered by the end of their stories. If you dare to criticize such writing decisions, you will be accused of sexism and be hounded for not “respecting their choices” as though these characters are actual people and not tools of storytelling. As if the cliche of female characters “sacrificing” their powers or having them stripped away exists in a vacuum and isn’t influenced by any larger cultural factors.
They’ll say: “Not every character has to be a girlboss!!” Or “Let women be soft and traditional!!” As if that’s some revolutionary way of thinking and not the norm. It’s an extension of choice feminism, dismissing any dissent about the quality of the narrative to make it make sense and avoid the uncomfortable truth. Diminishing the agency of female characters and cramming them into traditional roles is a common occurrence in many stories, and we should be allowed to criticize them without being silenced.

nina/jesper, wylan/kaz, inej/matthias
are all two halves of the same coin. Nina and Jesper both are the flirty, extroverted ones, and more importantly, they both suffered from addiction. But while Nina immediately started trying to end her addiction to parem, Jesper kept going back and ruining himself. Wylan and Kaz were both pushed into the barrel and had to survive, but Wylan kept himself from become a monster. Kaz, on the other hand, embraced his new life as a criminal. And finally, Inej and Matthias. They both are faithful and religious. However, Inej always used her faith to be merciful. Her religion made her a better person. Matthias believed that to stay loyal to his god, he needed to kill and persecute others simply for existing.

@moonvvrites boone & miles in these arms.
Tumblr media
"is that even a question?" boone chuckled softly. he tapped the wooden spoon on the edge of the pot three times before putting it down against the unused lid of the pot and stepped away from the stove. "actually, i'm a little hurt you even had to ask, miles." if it didn't seem like an insane thing to say, to do, boone would have miles here all the time. day in and day out, move his things in, he'd completely lose everything he'd into the place to build something new with miles.

Kaz, picking Jesper and Wylan up from the stadwatch cells: Weird choice for date night.
Jesper: Where did you take Inej last weekend?
Kaz: That wasn't-
Jesper: Where?
Kaz: *incoherent mumbling*
Wylan, who just wants to go home: Louder.
Kaz, groaning: I took Inej on an excursion to the tunnels under Ketterdam.
Jesper: Tunnels?
Kaz, muttering: Sewers.
Jesper: That's all I wanted.

... The skiffs were loaded with grain, timber, and raw cotton, but on the trip back they would be stocked with sugar, rifles, and all manner of finished goods that passed through the seaports of West Ravka.
Shadow and Bone- Chapter 2 (Leigh Bardugo)
One of the first things they've taught us during geography class was the easiest way to tell developed countries from underdeveloped ones- the first group cares about their resources and exports finished goods of high value, while the later exports raw materials with no added value. (East) Ravka acts as the underdeveloped backwards shithole it is.
Ravka doesn't have larger water bodies, or many rivers- where do they get water for all that cotton? Does that mean they've already used it all up?! And what about their climate? Do they have some special variety that grows faster?
Why are they importing sugar, when they could easily make it from sugar beets? Perhaps even export it instead of that stupid cotton that's much more demanding to grow and process.
... all manners of finished goods. *facepalms so hard it causes a concussion* As I mentioned above... let's say it would be much more beneficial to invite foreign specialists to teach current population to produce said finished goods themselves. It doesn't just save money for buying it, it offers job opportunities, education for workers and the surplus can be sold.
Ravka isn't fucked because the Fold's in the way of trade- its greatest issue is shitty management of their resources. And the wording makes it look as if the West was dragged to the bottom alongside the East, if the commodities "pass through their seaports" instead of being produced at least on their soil. No wonder they want to secede.

trying to characterize wylan as a “mini kaz” in combatting his infantilization is STILL mischaracterizing him. like yes, he ISN’T a weak “uwu smol bean” but he also isn’t some ruthless criminal. he never particularly WANTED to be part of barrel life and he never intended on staying. he found himself there out of necessity. what i absolutely love about his character is that he shows his strength without needing to be ruthless or violent, because strength can be shown in so many different ways. yes, he isn’t some weak baby and he also isn’t some ruthless, violent criminal. he’s neither of those and THAT is what’s so important about his character. and it really bothers me when people can’t even acknowledge the depth of that.

Alina’s reluctance to power didn’t make her humble or virtuous, it just made her cowardly. For Alina, rejecting power doesn’t mean rejecting corruption, it means rejecting a fundamental part of herself. It would have been good for Alina to accept responsibility and rise to the occasion as a hero and leader instead of remaining passive. Trying to generalize all forms of power as inherently corrupting ignores the context of Alina’s reluctance and frames her meekness and passivity as a good thing.
