M0vement: Photography x Sculpture

This performance piece was inspired by my previous sculpture: Armóin. As well as performance artist: Olivia Furey.

Sculptural Influences and Inspiration

I knew that I wanted to create something cantered around traditional irish music and knowing I was entering photography, I decided to make use of the instruments that I had myself (flute, tin whistle, accordion, concertina).

Unfortunately, because of the nature of my coursework as a B.Ed student, I was unable to attend any photography workshops so I made the decision to do my own research alongside my education coursework. I referred back to previous learning from semester 1; seminars, old workshops etc.. I also did my own secondary research and watched multiple YouTube videos centred around videography on an iPhone. From these, i learned about camera angles, editing, lighting and much more.

As previously stated, i was inspired by my most recent sculpture; Armóin. This piece illustrates the movement of a trad band during a session. After a one on one tutorial with Michael and much reflection, he helped me to understand how my work often leans on the side of over-illustration. Meaning I put too much emphasis on detail and precision and I tend to not leave much room for interpretation in my work.

This tutorial prompted what can only be described as a cultural reset within my art. I changed the way I interpreted my own art after this and it also opened up my eyes to analysing the work of others. This also helped in a later tutorial with Yvonne when I paired up with Dylan as we critiqued each other’s work.

Process

I wanted to create a series of clips that portray movement but not necessarily “music”. I came to a conclusion of calling it “anti-music”. I approached each of my instruments with a new perspective, similar to how I began to interpret all artworks after my tutorial wit Michael.

The clips here are just a few out of almost 50 videos. I chose these particular clips not only for their sound but also for their almost comedic affect. Olivia Furey aims to provoke emotion during her performances using homemade instruments. I wished to create something to this effect with my anti-music.

Reflection

If i was to recreate this in future or something similar, I would like to put more emphasis on the planning of the piece. This would include; location, lighting, instruments, camera angles, camera orientation (portrait/landscape). The clips you see in this video are simply the result of experimentation with instruments seen as foreign objects or sculptures. I think that this is a good place to start from but if I was to further my investigation of this, I would definitely employ a more thorough approach in planning, production and editing to create a more clean and professional result.

MOVEMENT: Reflection

Theme

Upon reflection of semester 1, I realised that I made some poor choices in choosing my theme for exploration. I chose something very broad which I didn’t know much about, and when it came to assessment time, I couldn’t clearly talk about what I had actually done.

My aim for this project was to turn that around and instead explore something that I already have a flare for. This lead to me exploring the theme of Movement Through Collective Effervescence in Irish Culture. (Ref. movement post 1 for definition).

To fully explore this theme, I made use of my three disciplines: Painting, Photography and Sculpture.

Sculpture began with much trial and error as I was still figuring out the message of my project. My attempts ultimately lead to my piece “Armóin”. This features a small trad session composed of wire sculptures and clay instruments. I chose these media because I wanted to convey the transience of Irish music and how it never focuses on one particular musician; each person plays an important role in unison with the group and while the musicians themselves vary and change throughout the generations, the music will always remain the same.

Painting began with a workshop with Sylvia. In this workshop, we completed a life painting and I learned many techniques about colour theory and composition. After a lengthy discussion with Michael about removing the “illustrative” element in my work, I was now working had to convey my theme through means other than detail. I had a brief tutorial with Eoin where I learned about mark making techniques and this inspired my method for my next painting “The Kesh”. I used only acrylic paint and a ruler to complete this painting. The composition of this piece was inspired by a line of Irish dancers but in my attempts to remove the illustrative element, I managed to reduce all shapes in the piece to simple triangles. I was really happy with this result as it helped portray the Irish tricolour with even more depth.

Photography was a difficult discipline for me, because of the nature of my coursework as a B.ed student, I was unable to attend the morning workshops for the final 2 weeks of the project. However, I wanted to make the most of the time I had and I referred back to previous seminars from semester 1 as well as the content published on Moodle. I also did my own research of tutorials centred around iPhone Videography which was my chosen medium. From these videos, I learned many new techniques for producing high quality clips with a phone. I created a series of clips that portray movement but not necessarily “music”. I came to a conclusion of naming it “anti-music”. I approached each of my instruments with a new perspective as if i had no pre-existing knowledge of the object. This approach was similar to how I began to interpret all artworks after my eye-opening tutorial with Michael. (More depth on this in original photography x sculpture post). Introduction to Allama Iqbal Open University

Allama Iqbal Open University is an educational institution of the Government of Pakistan established by an Act of Parliament of Pakistan in 1974. All the degrees, certificates and educational programs of the AIOU are recognized by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan. Allama Iqbal Open University got the status of the Mega University in year 2010. The slogan of the AIOU is “Education for All”. At present, the AIOU is offering its educational programs for Pakistani citizens living throughout the Pakistan as well as GCC countries i.e. Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain and United Arab Emirates. The university offers its educational programs through Distance Learning and Online Mode of study which is most feasible for the people doing job as well as the women who cannot afford to attend the educational programs in formal education system. The university has issued million of the degrees and certificates to its students during last 43 years. The AIOU has a permanent status of the Worlds Second Distance Learning University and Asia’s first Open University. At  present the course wise enrollment of the students is more than 1 million.

Affordable Education at Allama Iqbal Open University

As concern the fees of the AIOU, it is very affordable and cost effective especially for the low income people. For example fee for matriculation exam is about Rs. 3000/- charged by all the boards which is only for examination, students have to arrange books, tuition and other things separately but AIOU is charging approximately Rs. 1000 each semester which is inclusive of necessary items i.e books, admission fee, tuition fee, assignments evaluation, exam and even issuance of certificate.  Likewise, fees of different educational programs is intermediate Rs. 1500 each semester, bachelors 2000 each semester, masters Rs. 10,000 each semester, M.Phil Rs. 12,000 each semester and same for the Ph.D programs.

Easy and Comfortable Educational Programs

As mentioned above, the AIOU is offering its educational programs through distance learning and online mode of study which is easy and feasible for all the people those who are doing job or business or house wives those cannot afford to attend the formal educational system. The distance learning system of the AIOU has been developed on the model of British Open University which allows the freedom to the students for assessments of their studies i.e. 30% of the assessment is connected with the assignments which are carried at home by the students and 70% assessment is done through final examinations which are conducted at the Examination Centers spread throughout the country as well as in the Gulf Countries. All the courses of AIOU have been developed on the functionality of self study. A student can learn him/her self all these courses.

Help and Support

Allama Iqbal Open University provides a state of the art support and help to its students via its more than forty Regional Centers spread throughout the country. Not only the Regional Centers are providing support to the students, the University has established a support center equipped with the latest technology in form of web portals and help line which is operated from its Headquarters at Islamabad. Besides this all hundreds of the coordinators have been appointed by the University at Tehsil level who provide support to the students. The University has appointed more than 150,000 part time tutors to provide tutorial support and to perform continuous assessment of the study which is also very helpful for the students.

Allama Iqbal Open University is offering educational programs from basic literacy to Ph.D education with vast level facilities for its students. Detail of some of educational programs is given below:

Matriculation / Secondary School Certificate

This program is offered for the students who dropped out from their education before completion of matric/secondary school certificate. For admission to matric program, the students are required to have middle school passing certificate or matric fail certificate. This program is comprises upon four semesters i.e. two years study period having 8 credit hours study.

Intermediate/Higher Secondary School Certificate

Intermediate program offered by the AIOU is very comprehensive foundation educational program for the students having matric certificate. This program is offered in three disciplines i.e. Intermediate Science, Intermediate General Group, Intermediate in Computer Science and Intermediate in Commerce group. Requirements for admission to intermediate programs are passing matriculation exam from any Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education or Allama Iqbal Open University or equivalent certificate issued by any foreign board/university and equalized by the Inter Board Committee of Chairmen.

Bachelor Degree Programs offered by Allama Iqbal Open University

Allama Iqbal Open University offers a variety of educational programs at bachelor level. These are fourteen year education programs after completion of the intermediate in the relevant subject. At present the AIOU is offering Associate Degree in Commerce (A.D), Associate Degree in Education – In-Service (1-Year), Associate Degree in Education (2-Years), Associate Degree in Education (3-Years), Associate Degree in Education (A.D), B.S (Chemistry), B.S (Enviromental Sciences), B.S (Micro Biology) 4 Years, B.S IN PHYSICS (4 YEARS), B.S IN STAT. Teachers Training Educational Programs (Bachelor Level) offered by Allama Iqbal Open University

The AIOU have been offering a wide range of teachers training educational programs during last four decades i.e. PTC, CT, A.T, B.Ed and M.Ed etc. but due to change of the policy of Government of Pakistan now Allama Iqbal Open University is offering Bachelor of Education programs in three categories i.e. B.Ed (1.5 years) for masters degree holders, B.Ed (2.5 years) for bachelor degree holders and B.Ed (4 years) for intermediate pass students.
