Waking up with no memory of who he is or what his purpose is gave him the freedom to actually get to know the people around him, and start to develop actual relationships with them that weren't hinged on the eventual inevitability of betrayal and violent retribution one way or another. It sort of turned into a terrifying degree of obsessive loyalty, though. He mostly resists the Urge the best he can, but when someone he's grown to care about is threatened, things can get messy real fast. Think a feral cat bringing you dead animals because he likes you.
