A crazy theory I had about Blight is that his parents didn’t want him. His name is somewhat an industry name ‘Blight’ is a sickness that affects plants and trees, and overall has a pretty bad connotation to it. So in a lumber based district naming your kid Blight would allude to something bad. I love him a lot even if he wasn’t given any screen time, and I like to think about what kind of person he was, what moved him to become a part of the rebel plot, did he every try and get close to Jo, only for her to push him away in fear of the Capitol taking away another person close to her? Or did he distance himself from her, knowing the loss of family all too well? In his wiki it said that he was around 50 year old so he won his games somewhere close to Wiress and Chaff, I wonder if they, along with Haymitch later on became sort of buddies, and if then what was his dynamic with everyone. Truly wish we had more informations on other victors
Oh and since I’ve mentioned Wiress my hc for their friendship is that they exchange interesting facts about their specialties every time they meet. After both of their tributes are out, or before the games start, or on some capitol event they would greet each other casually, exchange 1 fact from each and go about their day, sometimes they would hang out a bit more, sometimes go their separate ways, but always exchange an interesting fact. It’s all about little things that keep you sane as a victor after all. And when in the arena they were walking through the thick of the jungle one of the last things Wiress said before the blood rain was a little detail about some machine she was working on, Jo didn’t understand why she would bring it up now of all times and Bee just concluded that Wiress was trying to distract herself, but Blight knew it was meant for him, he countered with a simple remark about a bowl that he carved from his favorite type of wood back home, it was a silent way of them supporting one another.

what changes would you make to sunrise on the reaping, if you were able to?
This question would require a thousands pages long essay as an answer, but I'll try to be brief and concise for the purpose of clarity.
1. The shoe-horn writing
The writing first and foremost. There was no need to dumb down the points in such a way that they feel narrow and with little to no nuance.
Not only does it imply the readers are stupid and illiterate, it's also a disservice to the themes of the story because they deserve to be treated with complexity.
2. The way the themes were executed.
I honestly don't mind the idea of the rebellion taking many attempts and failing before the trilogy's events, but SC's heavy use of revisionism to the point of denaturalisation of the way certain characters or plots were presented did not do the book any favour.
There are certain things that are unrealistic for them to be so retconned in the books. Mags and Wiress being his mentor first and foremost, because it's quite unrealistic that it wasn't known fact in CF.
3. The characterisations.
The way Haymitch's character was presented in Sotr is wildly different to the way he was presented in THG, and there was no need for him to be changed so much.
Yes, Haymitch was sixteen. Yes, when we see him first in sotr he was untainted by what would eventually happen to him. And yes, trauma changes people. But him being a little grumpy, sarcastic and snarky at 50 and a complete sweetheart in his youth with no bad bone in his body isn't realistic. In Italy we have a saying that goes "if you were born round, you can't die square", and while life can change certain aspects of your character, it doesn't mean that certain key features won't stay there.
And I'd give him more agency, making his participation more active instead of passively listening to orders or having everything he has learned in life coming from Lenore Dove.
I have already touched Lenore Dove's character, but so I won't go into much detail here, but i would definitely make her a more rounded person with a defined characteristic, instead of sacrificing her character for the purpose to sprinkle unnecessary parallelisms.
And would definitely eliminate the weird idolisation and the fridging. She deserves to be her own person outside of Haymitch's perception, and to not be a narrative device to further Haymitch's arc story and her death should have been handled in a more delicate way, instead of a scene thrown there just for shock value.
Sid and Ma would also get more exploration, and a better place in the novel, instead of being taken for granted by the narrative. Them being his family doesn't make it less worthy to explore as a dynamic.
4. Certain features of the story
First of all... Chaff. How come we get explored Haymitch's friendship with Katniss' parents or with Beetee's son, but there wasn't a single mention of Chaff? Really? Come on.
I would also change Effie's rebel sympathizer family members and would change the way Effie enters into the industry, because as I've already touched upon it strips her character of a lot of agency complexity.
Also I'd give back to Maysilee the connection to the pin, because I don't like the way it was stripped from her and sort of "assigned" to Lenore. It didn't have to be like that.
I would also change a lot of how Beetee was written, because not only did it not feel like him, but it also takes away the impact of his actions in CF.
5. The parallelisms.
I don't mind a few here and there, subtly placed in a strategic way, but this heavy amount of parallelism strips the story of originality and of independence from the og trilogy.
Certain narrative choices, without them, feel almost nonsensical or out of place.
These are only SOME of the things I'd change, and if you'd like me to go more on detail on certain points you are free to ask, but yeah. I hope my ramblings made some sense!

I see fandom is back to condemning Beetee but personally I like his worst qualities and actions even more now that canonically Wiress is portrayed as so much his diametric opposite. Maybe there's something wrong with me but I find it sooooo interesting that a man harboring such violent abilities became so intwined with a woman who was apparently, like, pathologically pacifist. There's never any hint of judgement from Wiress in the books to him or from him to her, but there's also no hint of putting them on a pedestal. Like he doesn't see her as redemption and she's not using him as a failsafe. Because they know it was never so black and white?
anon i absolutely love you for this. you’re so right now in the canon sense beetee and wiress are depicted as complete opposites and while i’ve always loved seeing how people depict them, i've always thought they differed from each other in very apparent ways. i want to explore and talk more about this at some point, but in my mind beetee and wiress, while both being from the same district and being victors, are very different. and this is actually one of the only things i liked about the new information we got from sotr, because it felt like a good way to show that the victors are not the same. they are going to react differently to situations and they’re very different personality wise as well. the victors are all separate, distinct people, and i felt like that was something a lot of people in the fandom lost in fan content (probably because it’s very difficult to create like upwards of 60 people lol but point still stands).
i didn’t like sotr for a multitude of reasons, but i did like the way it sorta of indirectly showed wiress as the opposite of beetee. also your line right here: “Like he doesn't see her as redemption and she's not using him as a failsafe.” beautiful anon, thank you for this ask.
(also there is most definitely not something wrong with you because you enjoy seeing this kind of dynamic. this is a reminder to you and anyone who sees this but liking something in fiction is not the same as liking something in real life.)

Beetee and Wiress NSFW Headcanons
(TW! Mentions of oral, p in v, praise, fingering, overstimulation, teasing, top/bottom/switch dynamics, body worship, slight mommy/mistress kink?, begging, toys)
(None specify Beetee in a wheelchair, all mainly Post Rebellion. ENJOY!:))
The bedroom is the main go-to for both of them (maximum comfort and privacy) BUT their own workspaces/tables have been used (Beetee’s space majority of the time:)).
Every once in a while when they bath together it's gotten heated (and not just by the hot water;))
When said tub time happens, Wiress usually ends up with her back against Beetee, him pleasuring her and him (proudly and ever so slightly cockily) smiling as he presses kisses into her hair and or temple.
Wiress and Beetee are both comfortable as top and bottom. They know and trust each other unconditionally so it truly doesn't matter who's on top or not, either way they both end up satisfied.
Beetee loves to slowly press kisses up and down Wiress’s skin, both as praise/worship and to tease.
Beetee Latier gives oral like a gentleman and has it down to a science. Ranges from being gentle and sweet to pleasing like a man starved of sustenance for god knows how long.
Wiress enjoys and prefers to be gentle whilst giving oral, mainly placing soft kisses along his length and suckling on the sides and tip.
Both are open to try and experiment with kinks and toys during sex. Vibrators are a favorite between the two as well as blindfolded.
Wiress has one lingerie set (a gift from Johanna) and sometimes uses it to “distract” Beetee if he is working too hard.
Wiress likes to overstimulate Beetee by pumping and milking his cock as many times as she can without causing any harm.
Beetee is a sucker for her praise and affirmations, during this time he is more vocal and louder than normal.
Beetee let a “mommy/mam” slip out once. He was embarrassed while Wiress only added fuel to the fire (she loved it and brings it up to see him blush).
Both vocal when on top, asking questions to tease, fluster and assure.
Aftercare all around! Both contribute (whoever was on top tries to do the most while the bottom insists on helping (if they aren't too blissed out))

Sunrise on the Reaping, by Suzanne Collins
Tumblr media
Itchy Itchy Haymitchy
I love The Hunger Games with passion. I reread the books before “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” and yes, I still loved them. Katniss Everdeen is one of my favorite characters. But I didn’t think a book about Haymitch was necessary at all.
I didn’t like TBOSAS (Long ass fucking name btw) I hated that book. For this one I had hopes. I thought maybe I didn’t care about Snow, and this was going to be different because I love Haymitch, everybody loves him. I was wrong.
It took me a lot to finish the book because the writing felt so clunky. It honestly felt like it was written by another person. It felt like those sequels from movies that don’t connect at all with the original, like Mean Girls. I also felt like Haymitch was talking slowly so I caught what he was saying, which is crazy because I’m sure the majority of people picking this book already read the THG trilogy, no need to dumb it down.
The biggest proof that the writing is a mess is that the book starts the same way as THG. We don’t know much about Katniss or Haymitch before the reaping. However, Katniss’ story feels real and all the supporting characters are interesting, even fucking Gale gives something to the story. But here they feel empty and literally like an introduction here are these familiar names. Then he goes to the capitol and are we supposed to care about these people? In the words of Louise Belcher: “If she was a spice, she’d be flour”.
Haymitch has a lot of inner monologue that gives nothing to the story. He’s bland and naive. And I get it, he’s 16 and he’s not the Haymitch from THG, but he has no personality. And maybe I’m comparing this Haymitch to Woody Harrelson’s version, which is not fair, but it just doesn’t feel the same. Did he get all his charm and personality from being an alcoholic? Like, he was a dumb, sad, hopeless boy and trauma turned him into this witty, sarcastic, funny man?
Then he talks about all the tributes that we know are going to die before the book ends because we know how Haymitch’s games end, and this was Suzanne’s hardest task, to make the games interesting. So, she decided to use this book to explain why Haymitch would trust Plutarch and go along with a plan to stop Snow. And honestly, this is why Katniss was the one who freed them because Haymitch was naive af.
They told him to go in there and blow up the arena, and he trusted them completely. It never crossed his mind that he shouldn’t trust the people that he just met, that maybe the people back home would suffer from his actions. Katniss was ready to kill Peeta if it was necessary.
Anyway, back to the tributes who were boring and I didn’t care for them. But when Maysilee finally showed up in the arena, I have to admit the dynamic changed completely, and she was the one who carried me to the almost end.
However, her relationship with Haymitch is terribly developed, and honestly, one of the worst parts of the book is when he starts to call her “Sister”. Just like that? And I get it they were put in a situation where they only can trust each other but Sister was too much Suzanne c’mon.
Also the cameos. Why did she bring Mags and Wiress to be his mentors? That's insane. Mags was not necessary there because with Wiress you can explain why she’s so fucked up in Catching Fire while also connecting her with Betee. Effie is there somehow. Because even though I'm always going to love Effie this was a stupid way to bring her back. How old is she anyway?
Also, wasn’t Effie assigned to District 12 and she has to prove her way up? But here she’s the hero and even if she agrees with the game she has sympathy for Haymitch but not for Katniss and Peeta.
And Why Haymitch didn’t want Katniss to team up with Wiress and Betee? She was fucked up because of him. Like bitch some compassion perhaps.
And why would Snow let all these known rebels (Wiress, Betee, Mags) participate in the same games?
There were a lot of moments in the OG trilogy that made you run through the pages. “Katniss is pregnant?” “What do you mean there’s no district 12?” “Peeta is trying to kill Katniss” “Tiktok tiktok” but here? Nothing. I was expecting that at some point he killed one of his allies and that he actually had to make a decision but he didn’t have to because everything was lined up for him. What’s the point of throwing a bunch of kids to kill themselves if you are going to send mutts to kill them?
And I get why people were saying that Suzanne destroyed their hearts again because it’s a sad book with a sad ending. However, it’s also true that it’s poorly written.
Maybe, Suzanne Collins should stay writing female characters because Maysilee is the only character with personality. Johana perhaps? Or maybe Enobaria. Anyway, I'm seated for the movie, and I'd read whatever book she decides to release next

Maybe it’s me being biased but every conversation Katniss and Peeta have had gives off more of the comforting best friend vibes than anything she had with Gale. Every conversation she had with Gale just felt like co workers who reached a decently enjoyable working dynamic. It’s so quid pro quo and never seemed to give off warmth or comfort or safety. Just familiarity. So that may be why I like them so much despite preferring best friends to lovers dynamics usually.
Yes, exactly! To me, if I had to pick a trope, Katniss and Peeta are ultimately the friends-to-lovers story (though they do have so much more going on that make them so dynamic and shippable). They're always joking, having fun, comforting each other, watching each other's backs. They're the best kind of couple because they genuinely like the other's company.
Katniss and Gale have learned to work together, even have trust and positive regard. And I won't deny that's led to some deep bonds. But for me, the ultimate sign that they aren't actually very good friends is this line: "Gale says I only smile in the woods." We see that proved false again and again. Katniss smiles at Prim, Rue, Peeta, Finnick, Wiress and they were never in the woods in 12 with her. And with Peeta, she's happy with him in the middle of the Hunger Games (she refers to this happiness when he talks about when he fell in love with her and again in Mockingjay when he hands her the plum stew), in the Victors Village during her ankle and tailbone injury, and in the roof of the Training Center before the Quell. And yet she only (or perhaps mainly) smiled with Gale in the place she was most free and closest to her father? It doesn't look great for him, tbh.
In the series, her happiness around Gale when it does comes up (and it does) is more of a comfort that she hasn't lost her old life completely. He's a symbol of that more than a person whose words and actions bring her happiness and reassurance.
Really I think their ending was there from the beginning, just like Katniss and Peeta's was.

Wiress, having wandered through the farmer's market with her characteristic absentminded demeanor, happened to witness the commotion near Johanna and her horse. The disruption in the otherwise calm atmosphere drew Wiress's attention, and she approached with a curiosity that was evident in her observant gaze.
Seeing Johanna soothing her horse, Wiress picked up on the situation quickly. The mischievous kid and their antics didn't escape her notice. Wiress, with her unique way of perceiving the world, assessed the dynamics at play.
"It's okay," Wiress said softly, her voice calm and reassuring as she joined Johanna. She glanced at the kid, her eyes narrowing slightly, an unspoken warning evident in her gaze. "Some people don't understand that scaring animals isn't nice. Animals can feel fear too."
Wiress then directed her attention back to Johanna, offering a sympathetic smile. "You're good with animals. They trust you. That's a valuable skill. Can I help with anything?" Wiress, ever observant and attuned to the nuances around her, was ready to assist in diffusing the situation or lending a hand with Johanna's market errands.

。.:*☆ Johanna really did not mind working as a lumber. It was something she was good at, and people always needed wood. It was what her fake father had always told her, as well. Plus, it was nice to be alone in the outback with just her horse and her dog.
Today though, Johanna was at the farmer's market because she needed to buy some basic goods like bread and eggs and meat. Not her most liked duty, but it was as it was, right?
And everything went well - until some evil kid decided it would be a good idea to scare her horse...
"Shh...." Johanna gently rubbed the animal's neck while shooting daggers with her eyes at the little bastard kid who obviously still found this all very entertaining. "It is all good, sweety. No danger here. I do promise."

What happens to Marie and Haskel(I’m so sorry if I misspelled😭) during the 75th games? They were likely present as mentors, but did they get taken by the capitol or to d13? And overall how would you describe their dynamic w the pair? Oh oh and you mentioned in your pre SOTR hc post that Wiress’ best friend has been killed as a punishment for her involvement with the rebellion, can you share more about that bit? Absolutely love your Beetress and the take on the universe!!!
this took me forever to get to i am sorry!!
okay so haskell and marie died. they likely were taken by the capitol since beetee was taken by D13 and were likely killed in retaliation for beetee’s rebellion. publicly and televised most likely. the same happened to beetee’s old mentor, attican, who was executed on national television. all of their deaths still haunt beetee.
i am going to assume by pair you mean beetress. marie was a family friend of beetee’s. they both come from the same area of the stills and their parents were friends. after marie’s parents died, she moved in with beetee and was reaped because of it. she was mentored by wiress, and she’s sort of a pseudo daughter (?) to them in a way. marie has long episodes after she wins where she can’t leave her house or perform basic tasks on her own. during the first few years after she won, beetee was the only one able to get through to her but as she got closer to wiress, she became more comfortable with her and trusted her more.
haskell is the one victor from Three i don’t have completely formed in my mind, so i have less on him than on marie. i do think he’s more comfortable with beetee than wiress, mainly because of the stills vs stepanov divide, but he’s getting better with it.
on wiress’ best friend… okay so venia ripley was a victor from Two who won the 44th games, four years before wiress. i think when wiress came back to mentor during the 49th, venia was the first victor to approach her and talk to her like a friend would, which helped wiress feel more normal in an unimaginable situation. it kind of snowballed from there, and they were both a part of the rebellion in their respective districts until venia was killed by the capitol for letting rebels live in the house she lived in before she won and allegedly helping them with plans to set up bombs in the peacekeeper barracks. she was killed after the 62nd when some of the rebels she was helping were captured.
i’m glad you like my beetress and my takes 💗 thank you for the ask!!
