Hello, January, we meet again old friend. My birth month. Meat canning month. The venison, chicken, and pork has been piling up in the freezers since November and they must be processed. Thus begins another cycle of the year. Perhaps you have heard others refer to “canning season”? Around here canning season is all 12 months of the year. Meats and roots in winter and spring. Cold crops in late spring. Summer veggies all summer and into fall. In between canninngs comes animal care, land care, gardening, family care, on and on. This is life for our family and has been for many generations. We don’t homestead for instagram and pretty pictures we do it because this is our provision and our tradition. If you’re interested in learning we do offer membership to our subscription via our website appalachianhomestead.org as well as our courses and books. This is where we teach in depth as Instagram is not friendly to that sort of education. . . . . . . . . . . #pressurecanning #canningandpreserving #cottagecore #gardeningforbeginners #gardenadvice #gardenhaul #garden #gardening #gardenlife #woodedgarden #millennialswhogarden #gardenpride #gardeninspiration #gardenlove #gardeningisfun #gardeninglife #growfoodnotlawns #growfood #backtoeden #backtoedengardening #harvest #seedstarting #seedswaps #seedsaving #seedheritage #seedlings #heritage #folk #folkcreative #folkcoreaesthetic https://www.instagram.com/p/Cm63K2bOfRW/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Two years ago we attempted a “Back to Eden” garden. We painstakingly laid down layers of cardboard. Covered the cardboard with no less than 10 inches of wood chips. And, it was glorious...for the first season. By harvest time, I began to have my doubts. Weeds began to peek through all of our hard work. Thistle. Horsetail. And, the like. Last year, I had major surgery and it was a continuous contest to see who would thrive: me, my precious veggies or the weeds. More than once I left my garden hot faced and teary-eyed in frustration not just over the weeds but because of my physical inadequacies. This year. We unlisted the help of friends and pulled it all out (except the beds). Next, we will lay ground cloth/weed block and replace the chips. Hopefully, this will take care of the weeds. My physical abilities? That’s another story and one I will have to keep pressing through. #backtoedengarden #woodchips #gardenseason #seedlings #growyourown #breastcancer #rheumatoidarthritis #thrive https://www.instagram.com/p/B_siPEmAUk3/?igshid=1cq7pw0eehavc

Repost @growingbacktoeden Saving seeds is essential for a self sufficient and sustainable homestead, farm, or garden! A lot of people just get really excited about saving their own seed and they go and save seed from all of their plants. That's really not the best way to insure you get high quality superior seed. Ideally you want to only save seed from your best producing plants that proformed exactly how you wanted them to if not a little better. This saves their genetics for the future plantings! Why waste space on your property with plants that were grown from seed saved from a plant that you already know didn't grow the way you wanted it to?! I might save a few seeds from some of these bigger heads of mammoth sunflowers but the majority of them will end up being chicken food... . This is off topic but I wanted to let you know that I'm flying to North Carolina tonight to visit my buddy Casey @honeytreefarmnc for a week. We're also planning on going to @polyfacefarm and then stopping by to see @thejustinrhodesshow! I'm pretty excited about it! . . . #growingbacktoeden #backtoeden #gardening #backtoedengarden #homestead #homesteader #sustainability #sustainable #selfsufficiency #permaculture #groworganic #organic #eatrealfood #gyo #organicgardening #garden #sunflower #felco #joelsalatin #justinrhodes @felco_official https://www.instagram.com/p/B4SwJVflMOo/?igshid=tngqbz9zdb95

How we could compost woodchip? A very interesting topic as anything involving a decaying plant being recycled back into the garden sounds healthy. This is how in a pile you can speed up the composting process: 1. Having a green woodchip with leaves on from a soft wood like pine takes less time to decompose. 2. Not letting the pile dry out as microbes need water to aid in decomposition. 3. Turning the pile every few days to add oxygen into the pile and help distribute a dominant microbial population. 4. Adding I.M.O a specific collection of microbes (see chris trump on youtube @soilsteward) which may help establish the best microbial population for your pile. Putting your woodchip on an old woodchip pile or near a woods may help this. 5. Sifting the pile removing larger wood that takes longer to decompose. Large chunks of wood that take longer to decompose can cause nitrogen fixing and acidity in the compost especially logs or branches. How do i compost woodchip? 1. I have multiple large piles of woodchip of varying ages that sit in place. 2. I then (amongst other things) make woodchip paths out of this woodchip around the garden on a liftable lining. 3. After a year or so i lift the lining and sift the woodchip using the bigger chunks of wood on the path again. 4. The sifted decomposing woodchip i put in a composting pile by the woods to use the local I.M.O population in my garden. 5. After the pile has further decomposed i use this material as a mulch/sheet compost on my garden. #treadit #treaditgardens #gardening #garden #nature #green #organic #gardenlife #nodiggarden #sustainable #nodig #allotment #allotmentuk #allotmentgarden #raisedbeds #diy #gardens #instagardeners #growyourown #growyourownfood #vegetablegarden #kitchengarden #urbangarden #composting #ediblegarden #plantlife #plantsmake Peoplehappy #plantlove #urbanjunglebloggers #backtoedengardening via @preview.app https://www.instagram.com/p/CZLONpBPHmf/?utm_medium=tumblr

Let the fun begin! A truck load of mulch ready for turning into new gardens. It might be getting colder but that's when all the hard work really starts. We've got a lot of trees to plant & gardens to prepare ready for next spring & it all starts with this first load of mulch. #freshperceptions #permaculture #mygarden #growyourownfood #veggiegarden #mulch #backtoedengarden #ediblelandscaping — view on Instagram http://bit.ly/2KoCzAP

Really like what these women are doing! Go check their page out! #Repost @backtoedengardening with @make_repost ・・・ Who are we? Dana & Sarah -- welcome to Back to Eden Gardening! We are owners of @danasarahfilms a women-owned documentary film production company based in Los Angeles, California. We are the producers of the movie Back to Eden that is streaming online for FREE 24/7 indefinitely so please visit the link in our profile to watch it now! We never imagined that @backtoedengardening would become a global organic gardening movement that would go viral and spread to 194 countries! Our primary goal is to empower people to grow their own food by teaching a no-till, non-GMO, organic, wood chip gardening method. Back to Eden Gardening has become popular because it reduces watering by 95%, eliminates the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, creates less labor, and builds organic compost for years to come! In addition to being filmmakers, we are also organic gardeners! As vegetarians, we believe in the incredible health benefits of eating a plant-based diet. Since produce loses 30% of its nutrients 3 days after harvest the most nutritious way to eat fruits and vegetables is to grow a garden! During this global pandemic, hundreds of thousands of people have started to grow their own food because of food shortages and social distancing. Many of you are beginner gardeners which is so exciting! There is so much to learn from one another during these times. We do our best to answer every question. This is our first year growing so thank you for joining us in our Back to Eden garden!
