Bad Candy - The Morgue Build

For the shocking scene with "Creepy Abby" in our film, we built and decorated a set to look like a morgue. The original set was built at our studio in Fayetteville, but ater deliberation, Scott felt the set needed to be much bigger, so we moved it across town and doubled it in size.

Will this trip be like the last ones??? Well, there was Oakland, where I was young and green and stupid and I felt my heart get ripped out of my chest. I wanted so much for that to work out. I was idealistic; I thought he was my punk rock guitarist knight in shining armor, except his armor came in the form of tattoo sleeves, leather jacket, and bandana—his horse was a Harley. We got in an elevator once and everyone stepped back, genuinely frightened. That was sexy. That motherfucker had swagger. He dazzled me by pouring me free Jameson shots, THAT smile, and turning into a little school boy who was sucking up to his first crush whenever I was around. He opened every door and pulled out every chair for me. He was a man. He had a sticker on his guitar that said ‘Fuckaholic’ and an open relationship with a bisexual woman. Divorced. Vasectomy at 26. Voice was pure sex. We tried to stay away, to no avail. He brought out my freak and I brought out his teddy bear. He made me feel as though he was my Rebel Without a Cause in the 1950’s. Sleep Walk by Santo & Johnny was our song, at least in my mind it was. He lived a million lives in his young 31 years. I remember kissing on a barren San Francisco rooftop, using a ladder from a fire escape to get to the top. It was starry, I was starry eyed, and it was the only perfect moment we shared that trip. All our moments before I visited were perfect. Idealistic. Like Casablanca. The second night was the worst. I bought myself a $250 hotel room for the night and dragged his drunk, crack-high ass with me while his friend fucked some loud, annoying bitch in the bed we were supposed to be sharing, the King that turned into a Double and an invite for his fuckboy wannabe rockstar friend to accompany us the whole fucking weekend. The heart was ripped....but slowly. I felt him succumbing to his addiction, his father had limited time left on the planet, he was dealing with his best friends overdose and death. I left him and cried the whole way home to Chicago, not without a layover at LAX where I was so desperate to find paper that I bought a Nick Hornby novel just for the blank pages to tear out and write on. He made it up to me 3 years later, only to ghost me after I left my husband, which, in hindsight, I needed. He didn’t want me. My heart was broken and never healed....for years and years and years; then it did. He was never my boyfriend. I’ll never forget him.

BAD CANDY - Review

DISTRIBUTOR: DREAD

SYNOPSIS: On Halloween night in New Salem, Radio DJs Chilly Billy and Paul tell a twisted anthology of terrifying local myths. Residents of the small-town experience terrifying paranormal encounters that lead them to a grim end.

REVIEW: BAD CANDY is an anthology film that tries to come up with a new hook. It’s Halloween night at the local DJ and his producer is having callers set up the DJ with a story that he then recounts as we fade into the tale. There are several tales jam packed into this 100 minute film, some a tad better then others, none really perfect as each suffers from a different flaw.

BAD CANDY looks great. Lots of props, set dressing and solid locations make it visually engaging, plus the editing keeps the film moving along. I enjoyed the practical effects as they also felt to fit the spirit of the film more than the visual effects. Lots of old school effects nicely done also sustained my interest. Was a bit disappointed in some of the creatures. For example the recurring demon clown, it was a mask. It had no movement and it was tough to see the actor’s eyes in many of the shots. It detracted from the effectiveness of the character.

The screenplay had so many moving parts and recurring characters that it was a tad confusing for an anthology film. Clearly the last story was set in the past but it wasn’t clear when the other stories were taking place. Several could be happening on that given Halloween. Some of the plots seemed more developed than others, and a few just felt like vignettes, there for the effects, atmosphere and filler. I’ve done public radio in New York City for over 30 years and even on the most boring nights in the studio we had a lot more going on.

Likewise, the acting runs the gambit of solid performances to kind of tepid. Many of the performers brought their “A” game and really drew me into the story and kept me vested in seeing it through to the end. The children were very good while veteran actor Zach Galligan’s performance, which could have been a result of the directing or the writing, felt flat. Musician Corey Taylor felt convincing as DJ Chilly Billy.

BAD CANDY is a potpourri of horror and Halloween elements that is rich in atmosphere and effects. It would be great to have on in the background at an adult Halloween party, and is sure to offer a few chills and thrills. Die-hard genre fans will most likely pick this part for all it’s flaws. Still as a film festival judge and a film critic I’ve seen many worse films come across my screen. If you check your expectations prior to the film's start, you might find BAD CANDY a fun scarefest.
