Today's mix:
Metro Tech 7 by DJ Marinho Fischetti 2001 Euro House / House / Trance
Took a trip down to early 2000s São Paulo, Brazil today with this very ephemeral dance mix that was put out by the city's Metropolitana radio station as part of their very own Metro Tech series. Never once in my life have I ever ventured into any of this locale's dance stuff before, but if this set is really truly representative of what was flowing throughout São Paulo at the time, then I guess I was expecting it to be a whole lot more Brazilian than it actually was? 🤷‍♂️
I mean, outside of the total banger that is Fogo's "Another Star"—which interpolates Stevie Wonder's own late 70s song of the same name, and is also therefore very similar to another Brazilian-sounding Bob Sinclar-produced house track by Salomé de Bahia called "Outro Lugar" that interpolates that very same Stevie song—the vast majority of the rest of this is just purely unremarkable trash that's been imported from mainland Europe; basically a bunch of songs that aren't Kernkraft 400's "Zombie Nation," but are just as janky and soullessly goofy with their rote and formulaic combos of things like squelchy bass vibrations and big and stupid, blaring melodies that are more fit for drunkenly chanting along to at soccer matches and hockey games. Não gosto!
But still, standing out from all of that transactional, mindless muck are actually a couple house gems here that don't have any of that cheap Euro-stink on them at all, like this release's final song, "Camels," which is actually a bonus track that falls outside of the mix itself, and is by a prolific Italian guy named Santos, who, from the looks of it, may actually have more aliases under his name than he has bones in his own damn body—and I'm assuming that his body is one with an amount of bones in it that most people would consider to be pretty normal!
"Camels" is a thumping, turn-of-the-millennium filter house delight that fronts with a lovely pair of dramatic and cinematic bits of orchestral string, along with a little piece of guitar funk as well, and then calms itself down with some distorted guitar synth fuzz on its bridge 🤘.
But the thing about that particularly terrific piece of sunshining dance bliss glitz is that you can find it on *plenty* of other releases; a song that I *definitely* can't leave you all today without mentioning is one that I don't think has ever appeared anywhere else besides this very Metro Tech 7 mix itself: a thing called "My President" by La Cubanita.
Now, to be honest with you all, I have no fucking clue who La Cubanita actually is. Discogs links them to a New York Latin house musician by the name of DJ Lucho, but I doubt that Lucho would exclusively release a song like this on some random-ass São Paulo radio station mix; because, really, if he did that, I think he fucked up big time—this song would've absolutely been his calling card.
See, what's so wonderfully odd about this very song appearing *exclusively* on a Brazilian dance mix from 2001 like this is how totally unexpected it is. This is a tune that stars a sexy-voiced, Spanish-speaking Latina who goes by the name of Mónica, and she gets passionately dicked—or perhaps cigarred?—down by none other than American president Bill Clinton himself, with pleasure-filled moans induced from her and all 😂. And normally, I really don't tend to enjoy the particular brand of tribal house that's on display here, but I think you can understand why I make such a big exception for this one. And of all the places to discover it too; like, what an absolutely ridiculous find here!
So, once again, never shut anything off, folks, because you really never know when you might come across an exclusive and exceedingly rare house track about a former American president's sex scandal on a mix from a country on a different continent that was most likely released when that president's successor had already taken office! 😊
Listen to the full mix here.
Highlights:
House of Glass - "Disco Down" La Cubanita - "My President" Fogo - "Another Star" Santos - "Camels"

Brazilian music video channel KondZilla created a very well-produced six-part YouTube original series on different music styles of the African diaspora in the Americas and beyond.
Each episode is hosted by a musician local to each region, and provides a brief and entertaining overview of the genre. There is more info in the Portuguese-language text that flashes on screen.
Flashing light warning for sensitive viewers.
Certain lyrics and dance moves presented are NSFW.
This is the first episode, focusing on Funk Paulista (from São Paulo) with brief mention of Funk Carioca (from Rio de Janeiro) .
The subsequent episodes cover:
Brega funk (Pernambuco, Brazil)
Reggaeton (Puerto Rico, with quick mention of the Panamanian roots)
Dancehall (Jamaica)
Bahia eletrônica (Bahia, Brazil)
Afrobeats (Nigeria, U. K.)
Nice limited series for folks interested in global beats/tropical bass/etc.

#33: Stan Getz & Charlie Byrd - Jazz Samba (1962)
Genre(s): Bossa Nova, Samba, Jazz
Tumblr media
Bossa nova gets a bad rap, but undeservedly so in my opinion. It, like so many great things, suffered from success (insert DJ Khaled album art here) and many cheap watered-down imitators. While it has a reputation as boring elevator music (how many times have you heard a muzak version of The Girl from Ipanema shoved into movie scenes of hotel lobbies?), the best examples of it are anything but. When done well, bossa nova has both a disaffected coolness and a quiet, smoldering intensity to it. Just because it's laid back doesn't mean it's limp-wristed. It's a tough balance to achieve, and many American artists have failed to capture it. This album, thankfully, is an exception to that.
While bossa nova's unique blend of samba and cool jazz was already starting to catch on in its home country of Brazil, Jazz Samba is the first album to present it to the US. The story goes that Charlie Byrd first heard bossa nova music while on tour in Brazil in 1961 and rushed home to make this album afterwards. While this could have easily been a gringo-ified version of the music (and many such versions would come once the style exploded in the states), Charlie and Stan both did a really exceptional job of mastering the style prior to recording. It helps that all tracks except Samba Dees Days were written by Brazilian composers (including the classic Jobim tune Desafinado, foreshadowing his future collaboration with Stan Getz on Getz/Gilberto; watch this space).
I alluded to it earlier, but as a musician I feel the need to mention it again: this music sounds deceptively simple, but is actually quite challenging to perform well. Any musician worth their salt can tell you that it's much, much harder to play softly or slowly well than it is to play faster or harder. To have a fluid, delicate touch with precision and impact is a big thing to ask. A lot of folks hopped on the bossa bandwagon thinking it would be an easy paycheck and found themselves lacking. The dexterity on display on this album is a testament to the extraordinary skill of the players.
Jazz Samba also, in case it wasn't clear, is a joy to listen to. There's a lot to love here. It's laid back, but complex and interesting. It's probably one of the most accessible jazz records in 1001 Albums, but don't let its accessibility fool you into thinking it doesn't have much to say.
Because it's not one I hear discussed much, I'd like to call out the closing track Bahia in particular as a highlight. The unison two bass ostinato throughout lends it a unique sound not often heard in jazz (or in general, really). It's a particularly cool effect in stereo when listening through headphones.
Anyways, Yes you MUST hear this before you die. I don't think the list needs to devote an extraordinary amount of space to bossa nova, but this one easily makes the cut.
Next up: grab yer cowboy hats, because we've got country crooner Ray Price with his album Night Life!

Hermeto Pascoal - Planetário da Gávea - first official release of this 1981 concert recording, the initial outing with “O Grupo” (Far Out Recordings)
On a balmy Brazilian night in February, 1981, a crowd gathered in Rio de Janeiro's Gávea neighbourhood under the iconic dome of the city's Planetário (Planetarium). Alongside musicians like Helio Delmiro and Milton Nascimento (who were in the audience that night), they were there to see the great "Bruxo" (sorcerer) Hermeto Pascoal live in concert, with his new band formation which would become known simply as "O Grupo" (The Group). The series of concerts at the Planetário marked the birth of "O Grupo" which would last with the same line-up (apart from Zé Eduardo Nazário) for the next eleven years. Every member of O Grupo was a phenomenal musician in their own right. It was one of saxophonist/flautist Carlos Malta's first gigs with the group, and the concert unusually featured two drummers, Zé Eduardo Nazário and Marcio Bahia. Nazário, from São Paulo, had played with Hermeto during the mid-70s (as well as with Milton Nascimento, Egberto Gismonti and Toninho Horta, to name a few). Bahia though had just joined the group. Acclaimed keyboard player Jovino Santos Neto was on keyboards, piano and organ, and the great Itiberê Zwarg (who remains in Hermeto's band to this day), played bass. Rounding the group off was the percussionist Pernambuco. During this period (up until the early 90s) the group would rehearse for hours on end, virtually seven days a week, with a total dedication to music and Hermeto's musical vision. Most of the compositions performed that night at the Planetário had never been recorded before, and many are unique to this album, including the wild 'Homônimo Sintróvio', the exaltant 'Samba Do Belaqua', 'Vou Pra Lá e Pra Cá' and 'Bombardino', which features Hermeto's wonderfully absurd call and response mouthpiece soliloquy. Then there's the stunning 7/4 Samba 'Jegue' which builds with inventive dissonance, before releasing yet another celestially colourful, celebratory refrain. The show also features the first recorded performances of 'Era Pra Ser e Não Foi' and 'Ilza na Feijoada' (inspired by Hermetos' wife Ilza's famed black bean and meat stew), which Hermeto later recorded on his 1984 studio album "Lagoa Da Canoa Município De Arapiraca". Over forty years since this historic happening, Far Out Recordings is overjoyed to release this magical recording of Hermeto Pascoal e Grupo Live at Planetário Da Gávea, on double vinyl LP, CD and digitally for a February 4th 2022 release.
