#baldur's gate spoilers

"Oh, but what if my D&D character's complicated backstory is unintentionally a little bit similar to another party member's backstory" the default party in Baldur's Gate 3 has two completely unrelated characters whose central arc involves angsting over the fact that they're going to explode soon for two completely different reasons.

I got very attached to my first Tav and her relationships with the companions so I wanted to do some quick sketches of my hcs before starting a new playthrough ~

Larian studios really said "We are going to create a Baldur's Gate that is SO queer"

Everyone is romanceable, regardless of gender. You can have he/him, she/her, or they/them pronouns and none of those are tied to what body type or genitals you have (both of which you can pick, independently of each other). The daughter of a literal god who teams up with you is like "me and my girlfriend need to go kiss for 100 years now brb". Every other npc in Baldur's Gate will casually mention their same sex partners. The ringleader of the planes hopping circus is heavily implied to be a trans woman. One person who can join you gets captured multiple times and travels the world, all to save a man he loves.

It's everywhere and it just...is. There's no stopping the plot for the game devs to pat themselves on the back for including a "diverse" character. There's no dialogue option to have a character spoon feed you the idea that they could be interested in the same gender. There's no casual homophobia. No constant casual sexual harassment towards your character just because you chose the "female" option.

And it's so varied. One queer romance is about doing everything to save the other and the reunion is a beautiful kiss. Another is being completely shot down by someone they risked so much for. A man in the streets will say "Get a load of my husband. Such a piece of work. And I'm the one who fell for the blockhead". It doesn't feel cheap if a queer character dies or is a terrible person or if their romance story falls apart completely, because there are just so many. Honestly, that goes for a lot of things in the game, diversity-wise. It's just really nice.

Ascended Astarion TURNED INTO A CUTE LIL BAT IN THE EPILOGUE. I thought he is going to turn into a giant monster bat like Dracula in Van Helsing, but he turned into a lil floof. He is so cute...

My current experience with Baldur's Gate so far

I love how each and every Baldur's Gate 3 companion (including even a secondary camp ally), one after another, almost verbatim, has a moment like : "Man, our companion got their revenge on the person that ruined their life but it wasn't nearly as fulfilling as they'd hoped and they feel mostly just numb about it. Even though it was definitely necessary and they're glad to have done it, it still really highlights everything they went through. Not mine though. Mine will be nothing but satisfying and won't unlock a torrent of grief I'd been putting off processing because I had to focus on defeating them. My revenge quest completion is going to be awesome." *One companion questline completion later* "By the nine hells this can't be happening"

here is a man who has spent the last 200 years being a slave to cazador, having no free will of his own and forced to seduce thousands of people for his master and having no idea how to connect with anyone outside of sex and manipulation and lies. it's all he's ever known, and he can't remember his life before it.

the idea of sex meaning nothing to him due to how many times he's been forced to do it, it being a tool and skill he's been forced to master, but the notion of hugging and holding hands having such a strong influence on him and experiencing —real intimacy— that is so foreign to him and to see him give us a genuine smile for the first time in this fucking game because he realizes that he can start over and be true to both himself and you is so fucking powerful 10/10 game of the fucking year i can't believe how good this is
