A mixed bag of letters and animals (featuring a couple of dragons!) from a beautiful 1525 book of Canon law. Someone please make these decorated initials into Bananagrams tiles.

Actually ‘Q’ is the perfect name for an eldritch being whose main purpose is to drive you bats because ‘Q’ is the letter in word games you get stuck with and can’t find a real use for unless you’re both lucky and clever. I’ll bet when Star Trek: The Next Generation was in development one of the writers lost a round of Scrabble because they were stuck with the letter ‘Q’ and they were like “Ya know what...”

Something that any lover of languages I think should try is to play a game of scrabble or bananagrams or something similar using only words from your non-dominant language. I just did this with my flatmate and it took over an hour, which my flatmate won by 3 tiles. We assumed any accents on letters were where we wanted them.
This was my board at the end.
Tumblr media
Most used languages are: Broad (from the Shetland islands), te reo Māori, Scottish Gaelic, and Latin. Also supplemented with a little Welsh and French.
This was my flatmate's
Tumblr media
Dominant languages are German, French, and Italian, supplemented by a little Latin and the same Japanese word three times.
It was the quietest game I've ever played and seriously felt like considerable mental effort was expended. Definitely plan on doing it again. It's interesting to see how an english tile set favours different langauges. For example, the language I'm most familiar with past English is te reo Māori, but it only has 15 letters, and uses 'w' and several other consonants a LOT more than the base tile set is made to accommodate for. Doubtless there is correlation between ease of language us in the game and how closely related its language family is to English. Sadly ConLangs were outlawed because of the difficulty in looking up meanings of words, so I couldn't use the Black Speech of Mordor.
I am now going to go down a rabbit-hole of how the tile selection was made for English bananagrams.

the thought of teaching a child how to read can seem overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be!
in all honesty, we’ve taken a slow approach with a lot of breaks when needed. my goal, in our homeschooling journey, is making the learning process enjoyable even when we are tackling the “hard” things. for us, that means not pushing or making them feel like there is a quota that needs to be met.
what we’re doing —
🦋 talking to the boys about how useful a topic, like reading, can be and encouraging them to take the first step. my first grader told me that he wanted to learn how to read last summer because he wanted to be able to read stories to his little brothers. I took that as a sign that he was ready and ran with it.
🦋 using the book “teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons” as our main tool when it comes to the formal lessons. I bought this two years ago and tried to use it with my then 5 year old, but he wasn’t ready — so we put it away.
I brought it out this fall again, and we are now flying through it!
instead of being discouraged because he’s not grasping the concepts, we waited until he showed interest and I cannot emphasize that enough. it was the BEST choice. sometimes, kids don’t follow the traditional learning curve that is pushed by school systems and that’s okay!
🦋 having easy reader books readily available all over the house and reading together throughout the day. also, asking my son to help me read to his brothers and giving him positive feedback as he tackles the longer words / the more complex vocabulary — it makes the process more enjoyable.
🦋 word activities / playing games instead of marking it as “school time.” this has been a game changer for me in the schooling realm. anything that is marked as a game has been well received when it comes to the hard subjects. with boys I’m finding that giving them room to wiggle around prompts more success.
think letter tiles, flashcards, writing on white / chalk boards, etc.
in short —
make it fun, don't rush and be content with taking the time needed to learn at their pace. removing quotas and benchmarks are the best thing you can do!

If you're playing a word game for points, you're playing it wrong. Playing to see who gets the coolest words and the weirdest combination is king.
