Marvel x A Bathing Ape Bapesta

In the early 2000s, A Bathing Ape was a rare and niche presence in fashion. Despite its popularity among hip-hop stars like Jay Z and Pharrell, the brand was hard to find in the US, with only flagship stores in New York City and Los Angeles during the original Marvel x BAPE launch.

While online shopping was amplifying around then, there were still strong concerns about buying products off message boards or from international retailers. This celebrity clout and untouchable chase all added to the buzz of BAPE across the Internet and in sneaker communities.

It’s worth noting too that Marvel had massive commercial cache at the time of the first collaboration, with 2005’s Fantastic Four grossing $330.6 million and 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand producing $459.4 million. While Marvel and A Bathing Ape may not have needed momentum at the time of their first pairing, it set a precedent for unexpected collaborations erupting a new world of converge culture.

In 2007, A Bathing Ape brought the same energy on a duo of DC Comics collaborations channeling both Batman and Superman. They also pushed the price due to increased demand or perhaps more expensive licensing. Historical StockX listings place both ’07 DC drops at $250 MSRP — $100 USD more than the previous Marvel collabs. can we start the conversation on pete's interest in fashion and how he heavily, especially in the late 00s, took inspiration from other black artists such as pharrell, lil wayne, and kanye west? it's one of my favorite things to notice. i specifically really love how pete and even patrick were/are sneakerheads. like that one infamous picture of him in the fuzzy black moonboots but how he only got into them because of pharrell. so now knowing that everytime i see ppl make fun of it im like hmmmmmm. buuuut yeah, i wanna hear what other people think about it cuz i feel like its really underappreciated. deepdiving i found out there was the possibility of a fob and bape collab in 2007 (which makes sense since they wore it like crazy thruout ioh era) and i need someone else to mourn that with me. need to commission someone to draw the guys in the baby milo style.

this is actually very fascinating to me because i dont know a ton about fashion, but it does make sense. petes still a sneakerhead and regularly buys yeezys (although patrick isnt anymore, which makes sense! he hates tying shoelaces. adhd king). ive said it before but petes fashion is very much like a guy from an emorap collective, which i think is completely indicative of what youre talking about. i think youre probably right, theres a lot of aspects of petes fashion that are pulled from black culture that people dunk on, and i dont think they realise why they feel inclined to do so.
