Everything embarrasses me. I think, in some sort of way, I embody embarrassment myself.

The way I lose my breath when I go up some stairs, in public, having to inhale and exhale as quietly as possible as not to let anyone hear how much I struggled to do something so ordinary.

The way my eyes water when the wind is too strong, making my mascara run down my cheeks and making me look messy.

The way my nose starts running when it's cold outside, making me feel vulnerable and childish. The way I have to blow my nose, trying hard not to make any noise.

I think I take way too much space, so on the bus back home I make myself fit in the tiniest nook, so people can be comfortable, so they don't have to feel stuffed like I do, holding my breath.

Would I be embarrassed if, with a knife sticking out of my side, I was bleeding on the ground, in a street full of people? Would I be holding my breath then? Would I try to make myself small? Would I crawl into a quiet nook to die silently and alone?

Would I be too embarrassed to fight to live?
