Day 10 of #28daysofblackcosplay is a Dapper Dan of Disneyland! For some not in the know there is an unofficial Disneyland event held twice a year (one in the Spring and one in the Fall) called “Dapper Day” where guests of the park can come dressed in their best late 1800’s, 1920’s-1960’s attire. And on Dapper Day in 2015 I decided to join the Barbershop Quartet and make it a Quintet! I mean I am an Honorary Member! 😉 Cosplay made by me. As a Black cosplayer, I’ve long since realized that black cosplayers in the community don’t get there just dues and appreciation for the work they do. We are always called “variants” or “(insert character name) if they were black”. I think it’s time we break that negative stigma and show appreciation for cosplayers of color. Round about this time a year I have this recurring nightmare—cuts me to the quick—about a roving band of straw-hatted, striped suit wearing, singing sociopaths who lull their victims into sleepy submission with hypnotic harmonies before brandishing razor tip shears, sharpened mercilessly against a leather belt, and disfiguring every hair on their victim's heads. I get this nightmare every April 11 on Barbershop Quartet Day, because while barbershops may be on the wane, some evil never dies.
