Some thoughts on the choice of Carina Smyth's first name

Ngl even though there are many things I don't like about DMTNT, I think that Carina is like one of the best names that could be chosen for Barbossa's daughter. It sounds like a pretty regular name at first, but I think the backstory is what makes it actually a really great choice.

"Carina" is the name of a star constellation which is also known as "keel of the ship". In the german dub of the movie this is actually made more obvious, as Carina says that she's named after said star constellation, whereas in the original she says the the brightest star in the north (which is part of the constellation) gave her her name. Being named after a star constellation which resembles a ship (or at least a part thereof), her name is connected to both the stars and the sea, two focal points in Barbossa's life as a pirate and as a captain. He's a man of the sea and an exceptional navigator, and I think it's safe to assume that he has a very good knowledge of astronomy, particularly for navigational purposes. As he said himself, he knows which stars to follow home.

I like to think that Barbossa consciously chose his daughter's name because of its meaning. However, we unfortunately don't know under which conditions it was chosen, since we simply don't have enough information about his and Margaret Smyth's relationship. How many months before the birth did he learn that he was going to be a father? Were he and Margaret able to prepare for the changes in their lives that might come with having a child, did they make any plans for the future? Did they think up names together, and he suggested Carina, should they have a daughter? Or did Hector just return to land one day to learn his partner had died while he was at sea, and left him a child, and he had to come up with a name on the spot and the first thing that came to his mind were the star constellations?

I kind of doubt that we will get any canonical answers to those questions, so they are left to the realm of headcanons. I personally like to imagine that Barbossa chose the name carefully, and because of what it meant to him personally. Even though he kind of said in the movie that he never wanted his daughter to be associated with pirates (which happens to include himself), I think as her father he still wanted to make at least one meaningful impact on her life, which happened to be the choice of her name. Maybe also, in that way he would never forget her, since whenever he observed the sky and saw the star constellation Carina, he would also think of his daughter.

Reclaim the Stars Part 2 of ?

     Carina Smyth Barbossa x Fem!Reader Mini Series

       Henry felt shattered. Carina was gone. She ran away from him. 

For one shining moment everything seemed perfect. He had his family and he had the love of his life. How could things be better?

 It had all been overwhelming. 

He had only ever seen his father twice in his entire life, and now Will was staying, staying forever. Elizabeth had always been an incredible mother, had always tried to be there for Henry, but she never knew how. As the Pirate King, she had certain responsibility that needed to be attended to, and balancing that with raising a child alone and trying to free her husband from an ancient curse was overwhelming to say the least. This meant that often, Henry had been kept under the care of any maid who could survive his shenanigans, but they never lasted long. 

His life had always been a flurry of change, always shifting like the water his mother loved so much. He had tried to embrace it, tried to flow with the tide. 

Maybe if he were like the sea his mother would stay. Maybe if her were like the sea he could be enough. 

All of this pushed him to spend his life trying to save a man he knew he should love.  The sea and its lore became Henry’s life. Then, the sea brought Henry to Carina. She was beautiful and witty and brilliant, and she stayed. She became his constant. She was there when his parets were not, and when he suddenly had both parents always smothering him with love and attention, she was there to anchor him. 

He thought he might love her. But then she left. 

His constant was gone, so he was going to bring it back.

Was it really so selfish to want someone to stay?

Jack was frantic. Carina was gone. She ran away from him.

 The girl had proven time and again how stubborn and independent she was, but he hadn’t expected this. He had thought she trusted him. Then again, why would she? When had he ever proved himself trustworthy?

He hadn’t planned on going back to the Turners’ island, hadn’t planned on visiting any of them. But his memories of Hector and Margaret haunted him. They had been so in love. 

No matter how much Barbossa had denied it, Jack knew that he would have been an incredible father. After Margaret died, Hector had given up. Jack could only imagine what the family could've been, what they could've done. He had watched as Hector gave up his daughter; he had never expected to see the child again. But there was too much of Margaret's blood in the young girl. She was determined to find her father, and she did. She dedicated her whole life to finding him, and yet she lost him.

Maybe Jack felt partially responsible. He had known, and yet he hadn't told Carina of her relation to Barbossa. He could not deny the truth; both he and Hector were cowards. Still, it seemed unfair that Jack had to deal with the aftermath.

Clearly, he wasn't doing too well at fixing things. Carina had been missing for an entire month, and the only possible lead he had on her was an account from a dinky port town. Apparently, a female pirate had stormed into town, magically disappearing before the townsfolk could heroically arrest her. 

Hopefully Jack could find her soon, and hopefully there was no actual magic involved. He was getting really tired of magical half dead people who wanted to kill him.

Carina had found her home.

 She didn't know how, but Y\n, that sweet, awkward girl had truly become her home. 

“ I hope you are aware that I will not budge on this.”

Carina laughed. “ Oh, I am well aware. I wouldn’t dare to leave Ursa behind. I designated a whole basket for your furry little monster.” Y\n gasped, dramatically throwing her hand over her heart. “ How dare you suggest that Ursa is anything less than an angel. Look at her! You broke her little heart with your name calling!”

The cat in question did not in fact look heartbroken to Carina. Ursa hissed, feeling Carina’s gaze. Carina swallowed the urge to hiss back, instead returning her eyes to Y\n. The girl was staring at Ursa contemplatively.

“You really want to do this? Do you really believe that we can successfully commandeer an entire ship? Where would we go?”

Carina smiled, “ Anywhere! We would travel the sea, visiting all of the islands. If we find one we love, then we will stay!”

Y\n grinned briefly, then frowning, commented “You didn’t answer my first question. Are you positive that we could take charge of a ship? Just the two of us?”

“Three, with your demon cat. But yes, I am sure. Two able bodied people is all it takes, and we can stop by Tortuga to gather a crew if you want.”

Y\n remained silent for a moment. It was just long enough of a pause that Carina really thought about what this could mean. It wasn't as if he were proposing marriage; she had only known Y\n for one month. But this, this was serious. She was asking Y\n to abandon everything familiar to her so that she could seek out a life with Carina. Why would she even consider saying yes?

"Okay."

Carina blinked. " Okay? Wait... Okay! Do you really mean it?"

Y\n laughed, and Carina could have sworn the sound was pure sunshine. "Yes, I mean it! When do we start?"

Grinning, Carina caught Y\n's hands in her own. " Tomorrow, if that's what you wish. "

Carina knew that she was in far too deep, drowning in the way she felt, but she couldn't bring herself to care. She wasn't sure, but she thought she might be falling in love, and she felt giddy at the thought. But time would tell, and she was willing to wait millennia for Y\n.

A\n: I'm not very proud of this, but it's better than just sitting in the back of my head I guess? Also, I'm really sorry for not having very much Carina and Y\n in this one either.

After getting over the fact he’s literally a cursed undead skeleton... There’s something about Barbossa that fascinates Mrs. Swann. She’s known her fair share of captains throughout her life, and yet there’s something unique about Barbossa. (I mean she is meeting a living legend after all xD)

I like to imagine if/when they ever saw past their differences (& imagine if she one day just shocked his hat off with her own knowledge of sailing & the sea thanks to Joshie & Papa Gibbs 👀) they might actually become friends (??) and if there wasn’t the bloody curse (& getting a Turner back), imagine if Margaret got to (gasp!) enjoy the little taste of life at sea. (It’s rotten & especially when the crew is undead and a motley bunch, but hey, it’s an adventure, yeah?)

Sooo~ I have this little idea that Margaret Smyth eloped with Hector Barbossa... — oh wait, I think I already mentioned that before? OKAY NEXT HEADCANON.

This is more about Margaret Smyth herself, but I imagine that for someone to be in love & be loved romantically & passionately by the legendary Pirate Lord of the Caspian Sea, Captain Hector Barbossa, Margaret Smyth had to have been an extraordinary woman herself. (Plus, Carina would be just as much Margaret’s daughter as she is clearly Hector’s daughter)

Ngl Margaret Smyth reminds me of Greta Scacchi’s character in Love & Rage (tragic & brutal story but great acting from her!) She’s someone who (in the victorian era in the film) defies the social limitations for being a woman, who smokes, who drinks, who rides horses astride, who carries herself with headstrong independence & answers to no one! Hm, now who does that remind us of??? Yup, that’s Margaret Smyth. (Plus, she takes, like, no guff from no one... even Hector xD)

It's no secret Barbossa fell for the wicked lady of the sea.

She has elegance, beauty and grace, everything he couldn't resist.

Margaret Smyth is canonically the love of Barbossa's life.

I would picture him jumping into fights whenever to protect Margret.

Barbossa would more or less have Margaret on his mind even when he's out at sea.

When he's at the helm, he would pull out a miniature portrait of her when he's missing the woman he loves.

Beckett secretly invites Margaret to his manor while the captain's out at sea.

Barbossa trying to convince Margaret to stay away from Beckett.

Margaret and Hector are similar to Elizabeth and Will, except they are more passionate.

Barbossa saves every moment he's on shore with the lady he loves.

Hector has self-doubts about his daughter.

It was under a gray, threatening sky that Margaret walked the ten minutes from the Dog and the Duchess to the port, as she did every morning. Margaret was responsible for the day to day menu at what was highly regarded as the best tavern in town, which sent her daily down to the docks to see what might have come in. She kept an eye on the angry, but for now quiet, clouds overhead, willing them to hold any rain until she had gone back.

The threat of the inclement weather may have rushed her that particular morning, or perhaps her preoccupation with planning what she would serve today. Whatever it was that distracted her, Margaret’s attention was thoroughly elsewhere as she scanned a cart of fruit. She was surprised to see apples; they made it to Nassau sporadically enough to be an immediate treat, and she was picturing some kind of tart–

Somehow, she had not noticed the figure that had suddenly appeared next to her until their hands brushed reaching for the same piece of fruit.

“Pardon,” she said in apology. “I must have been daydreaming.”

Barbossa snatched his hand back a little too quickly, having no legal reason for it to be there in the first place; only to delicately select another when he saw she wasn’t a guard. He polished it on his sleeve (making it, if anything, dirtier) and took a hearty bite.

At this hour, the rest of the crew was still sleeping off their hangovers in inns or brothels or gutters; with this ominous sky they wouldn’t be weighing anchor for another day or two. And Barbossa relished the chance to escape their company, however briefly. Sharing a glorified floating shack with a couple dozen men for weeks at a time could be stifling.

 A woman, though, was a welcome sight.

“Weren’t quite attendin’ meself, neither. I am now,” he hastened to assure her, smiling, and inquisitively wagged the hand with the apple in it. “These yern?”

mains call! 

so i’ve decided to open my blog to the whole idea of mains. i’m gonna keep this short and sweet for all of ya. 

being my main does not mean you are the only version of a character i will rp with. it is a sort of priority over other interpretations. i will push your memes, your drafts, to the top of my list. it is permission to spam you with memes/IMs both ic and ooc. it’s permanent permission to tag you in things, such as starters, songs, visuals, etc., as well as to bug you all day. 

however, i do have a few rules for this--

i. if we are to be mains, it must be a mutual arrangement. i don’t expect exclusivity but i’m not going to prioritize someone who is unwilling to prioritize me. to be absolutely blunt, i must be your main elizabeth if you are to be one of my mains.

ii.  i will have      a t     t h e       v e r y       m a x        two    versions of the same character as a main. this is for my own comfort, as i do not want to over commit myself. also where’s the point in having a main if you’re mains with everyone.  iii. in order to be my main, we must have some sort of active thread or universe between the two of us. additionally, i would strongly prefer if we have some sort of relationship ooc. i’m not going to make total strangers i’ve never rped or talked with before my mains.
