Time to return to Pallet Town and figure out where to go from here. (Ash is going to be so mad when he finds out the path to Victory Road begins in Viridian City. Just go west, my guy.) It's literally the straightest shot possible to the south over Route 1, the simplest of Routes. Even Ash can't possibly-- Oh look, a circus!
(In fairness, this isn't getting lost. Who wouldn't stop to talk to a new NPC when backtracking through a previously visited location? That usually means optional bonus content!)
The ringmaster, Atsuko/Stella, has a sidequest for Ash. There's an ultra-rare wild Mr. Mime running around these parts and she wants them caught. She already has a Mr. Mime, but all they want to do is laze about. She's hoping some competition will get them in the performing spirit.
Brock tries to cheese the sidequest by disguising Ash as a Mr. Mime instead. While it fails to capture the interest of the real Mr. Mime, the circus is able to perform using Ash-Mime. Good news is, being in such close proximity to Pallet Town means Delia attends! So that's cool! Bad news is, being in such close proximity to Ash means Team Rocket attends too.
Team Rocket pull off one of their most successful capers ever, stealing the circus's Mr. Mime right out of the inner ring and getting away scot free. Which is a problem, since that's the disguised Ash. Brock and Misty try to plan a solution, but Delia argues that it's no big deal. Team Rocket thought they were stealing a Pokemon. Once they realize the truth, they'll let him go.
So instead of helping Ash, they all agree to go have dinner instead. What wonderful friends and family. Fortunately, it does more or less work out that way. Ash unties himself, takes off his mask, curses out Jessie and James for being unbelievable morons, and then steals their Meowth balloon to get home. We don't see him flipping them double deuces on his way out, but I'm imagining him doing it.
The Rockets go for a frontal assault on the circus. But Delia's picked up the real wild Mr. Mime in a case of mistaken identity; She thought they were Ash, though she later admits that they were too uncharacteristically well-mannered to be her son. Harsh.
Once the confusion's cleared up, Delia's Mr. Mime is able to fend off Team Rocket and inspire Stella's Mr. Mime to do the same. The day is saved, and Ash has to slink off back home, trapped with the knowledge that his difficult sidequest had to be completed by his mom.
looking at the "pkmn as extensions of character" post n gigglin kickin my feet thinking about pkmn like lizardon n lugarugan that reflect satoshi's growth of maturity, pkmn like gekkouga & lucario that both reflect his bottomless capacity for love/connection & his growth in keeping a calculated mind in battle, how majority of his pkmn reflect an endless climb towards strength & greatness & Proving oneself,,,,
current obsession: prevos & evos that existed in the spaceworld demo, were scrapped, and then went on to be included in later games
Jaranra: Tangela had both a pre-evolution named Monja, and this form that it evolved into at level 44. The name comes from Tangela's Japanese name Monjara, from a word meaning "densely covered in thick hair." (If you're curious, Tangrowth's Japanese name is Mojumbo, coming from Monja and jumbo.)
Both Jaranra and Tangrowth have the same general premise of "what if the vines got bigger and covered EVERYTHING." Tangrowth has only the eyes showing, while Jaranra only shows its mouth. That's upsetting omg. But ultimately this is probably the one closest to its final design.
Shibirefugu: was planned to evolve from Qwilfish at level 18. Name essentially means "numb pufferfish." It's a pure Water-type, so I'm not sure why it has a lightning bolt on its head. It has basically nothing in common with Overqwil.
Baririina: pre-evolution of Mr. Mime, evolves at level 15. Name is a fusion of "Barrierd" (Mr. Mime's Japanese name) and ballerina. Notably, it is a Normal-type, not a Psychic-type. (Mime Jr.'s Japanese name, Manene, comes from a word for mimicry.)
The choice to make Mr. Mime a dancer in the Galar region seemed odd at the time, but I suppose it goes back further than I thought! Though it gives us a source for that connection, it has very little in common with Mime Jr.
Madaamu: evolves from Farfetch'd at level 24. Obviously, the name comes from "madame," though I can't figure out how that name connects with Kamonegi. Overall this Pokémon has very little in common with Farfetch'd or Sirfetch'd, though it is kind of funny that the two evolutions are essentially Sir and Madame.
Nameeru: evolves from Lickitung at level 32. Name comes from a verb meaning "to lick," and is notably unconnected to Lickitung's Japanese name Beroringa. (Lickilicky stays closer to its prevo with the name Berobelt.)
There are some interesting similarities between Nameeru and Lickilicky - both have a swirl on their head, and patterns on their body (Nameeru has circles across its body, while Lickilicky has the weird internet-connection-looking stripes on its stomach). Poor Nameeru's tongue is so long that's constantly dragging on the floor, and rolled up like a scroll. Lickilicky's tongue isn't quite that big, it more juts out of its face. And why does Nameeru have a moustache? So many questions about the development of this Pokémon.
Riifi: evolves from Eevee after being exposed to a Leaf Stone. Kind of ironic that Leafeon originally didn't evolve by Leaf Stone, but now does in some games because they got rid of the moss rock mechanic. Name obviously comes from "leafy." Leafeon's Japanese name is extremely similar, with just a single kana added: "Riifia" or Leafia.
You can really see influences of this design on Leafeon - they both have stray leaves that stick off their legs, and leaves for ears and tails. Riifi seems a bit more, for lack of a better world, feral - it's all-green, all leaf, while Leafeon has a tan body that makes it look more mammalian. Overall Leafeon's design fits in better with the rest of the Eeveelutions, but I appreciate the untamed naturalness of Riifi.

Hello, everyone! Here’s the second part of the most recent comic! If you missed the first part you can click here to catch up with it!
Unfortunately I was recently rejected on other job offer so my job hunting continues and as such I’m also accepting art commissions, Ko-Fi donations and selling away some personal goods to see if I manage to upgrade my Nintendo Switch to the OLED Scarlet & Violet edition before Christmas 🤞 .
Delia’s safe and sound and Gary seems to have managed to identify the cause of the typhoon. But what’s next? Find out soon on part three that I’ll try to make it available in between 1 to 4 weeks. Please stay tuned!
