A post about my ex who fucked me up so bad hahahaha.

So anyway one of this guy's wildest beliefs was that your personal politics should be actively NOT self serving. Like he told me that I shouldn't be pro-birth control/plan b/abortion even though I had been sexually assaulted and relied on those things to avoid pregnancy, because my attacker was white. So he was like honestly you would've been worth more in the world if you had his kid. For the greater good or whatever.

And he would lecture me for hours and hours and hours at a time about how I should basically chemically lobotomize myself with mood stabilizers until I had no opinions of my own, because I was a white woman and should really not do anything but repeatedly have kids. And I was expected to be like yep this is the life I want.

When we moved to phoenix, he was aware of my heart condition. I have POTS, which mixes horrifically with heat like that. We lived there for 3 years and most of that time I was in bed sick because the heat made my illness so much worse. I relied on him for everything.

I developed a bunch of shitty coping skills that probably have fancy psychology names like cognitive dissonance (which is like doublethink, which I did constantly for all 5 years and I'm sure it caused brain damage or something tbh) but it all boiled down to me completely buying that he was the only person on the planet who could tolerate me and that I had to bend to his will or be alone forever. It's been years since I even saw him and I still haven't dated seriously or gotten close with anyone.

I hold everyone at arms length, barely text my friends and am disconnected from everything and floating through life atm. Still trying to reverse all the damage he did. I have no self worth and no metric for what it feels like to be loved instead of just owned and controlled. I don't know what I want out of my life.

I don't understand how I could have let myself be so controlled by him. Why did I move across the entire country with him? Why did I let him push all my friends out of my life, change my career (he didn't approve of me being a barber because it was "basically like being a stripper"), and cross 8 states to get away from my life? To be... with him? Why did I let him convince me I was a docile, sweet, straight woman who wanted nothing more than tradwife and babymaking duties?

Even after I came out as what I thought was lesbian at the time, he still demanded sex from me multiple times a day and wouldn't take his computer stuff out of the second bedroom so I could sleep there. I had to sleep next to him and let him do whatever he wanted to me because he was paying the rent. I was forced into it so often that I convinced myself I liked it. Which is probably why now I'm so confused by my sexuality. What's a trauma response? What's genuine attraction? Who knows.

In march of 2020 I lost my job. He immediately kicked me out and I had to find an apartment alone, with no job, across the country from my family, in the middle of a pandemic. I've never had a worse mental health situation in my life and I've been inpatient 4 times. I barely remember any of 2020 because guess what? It isn't like I was allowed to stop having sex with him and showering with him because we didn't live together. He showed up constantly. Stole my spare key and made a copy so he could come in whenever he wanted to.

So why didn't I call the cops or something? Idk. I didn't really register that it was a problem at the time, he had been torturing me with stuff like this since I 19. By the time I was living alone in a shitty studio during a pandemic with no friends and my family a $400 plane ticket away, I just assumed that my life was being forced to perform a blow job, then let him fuck me, then showering in my tiny apartment shower with him while he leered and stared and grabbed my body, and then watch him play video games on his PC afterwards while sitting in silence on the bed.

One time he took away all my birth control pills and made me watch while he flushed them all. Going off of them suddenly made my lamictal way too strong (and of course he was force feeding me the lamictal so there was no such thing as adjusting the dose) and I got what I'm assuming was serotonin syndrome. I was blacking put, vomiting, hallucinating, terrified, and completely alone. I was calling him because he took away everyone else in my life and all I had was him. I drove to his apartment and begged for help. He ignored me and let me lay unconscious in my car outside his apartment for hours and hours in the middle of the day. In phoenix, in July.

I don't know what happened that day. I don't know what he did to me, but eventually I woke up at home. I found my car in the parking lot of a nearby grocery store.

I'm lucky I got away alive and without a baby. No one deserves to inherit half of my shitty genome and half of his. I'm lucky I got away at all, but not until he broke my spirit, took away all my support, dragged me across the country to a climate that made me severely ill, repeatedly forced me into sex after I came out, gaslit me, made me homeless mid pandemic, then continued to abuse his power until it literally almost killed me.

I met this guy when I was in high school. We were together from when I was 19. We moved to phoenix when I was 22 and he controlled me until I moved back home in July of 2022 when I was 26. The final straw was when I went out on my own for the first time in years and the bartender put drugs in my drink. I woke up alone in a swanky downtown apartment and when I called him to pick me up he told me if I was going to behave like a slut he wasn't going to bail me out.

Problem is I'm really REALLY allergic to both alcohol and roofies so I was horribly dehydrated as well as missing medication doses at this point, so I walked in the 100° heat to the ER. I got a sane exam where they found semen, a plan b pill, and a lengthy interview by about a dozen police officers. I couldn't bear to be alone in my apartment after that so I had the cops drop me off at a psych hospital.

I got my meds switched, went home, cleared out my apartment, broke my lease, and went home to my family. I'm safe now. But he's still haunting me. I don't know if I'll ever be okay.

HAPPY EARLY VALENTINE’S DAY I DIDN’T THINK I WOULD HAVE FINISHED ALL OF THESE IN JUST A DAY. Feat. a messier artstyle for once since I wanted to try some other stuff. Back on topic, these would all be the couples in the AU! Feat. their team-up attacks on each pic rather than ship names, because. Why not. More on how each couple got together below!:

(Oh, also, this whole collection kind of had a beach outing theme! if anyone was wondering why everyone was in tank tops lol. Most Valentine's Day art that's seasonally themed it's on winter, but since Valentine's on summer down here I wanted this set to reflect that.)

ORIGINAL CANON COUPLES

Brandon and Stella: Pretty close to canon, except for one thing: Stella knows from the start he’s not a prince. Solaria and Eraklyon have pretty close ties, and Stella was at one point considered to be engaged to Sky when they were younger, though Radius and Luna inmediately turned the offer down. They’ve been lowkey dating for two years or so before S1, but had to drop it in public when entering Alfea and Red Fountain as to not cause suspicions. They kinda suck at hiding the affection, so they kinda flirt every time they meet regardless, even when they pretend they totally weren’t just flirting haha shut up Timmy. Once the reveal is done to the rest of the system they lay down for a bit, what with having to deal with the fallout of that day since both Sky and Bloom kinda shut themselves in. They decide to fully start dating right before the final battle of S1 once the war is over, and so they do. They do have some issues with how they tend to take the other for granted, but they’re blessed with the power of communication so they tend to make up pretty quickly.

Tecna and Timmy: Also pretty close to canon. Tecna’s the one that aks Timmy out during the middle of the S1 war, kinda throwing it out there just in case they survive. Timmy does agree, but it was kind of a spur on the moment situation and they lowkey can’t deal. Or rather, Timmy can’t deal - Tecna’s has had a couple partners before so she knows how awkward everything is at the start, but Timmy’s kinda flying blind, which leads to some setbacks alongside S2 - mostly Timmy accidentally ghosting Tecna and Tecna not wanting to confront him. They do work out their issues as the season progresses however, and by S3 they’re the most stable couple of the entire group.

Flora and Helia: Flora and Helia knew each other as kids, and were in a friend trio alongside Krystal (then known to them as Rosa to avoid being caught), but Helia moved shortly after and they lost contact. They do recognize each other and try their best to catch up, but Helia’s kinda too focused on his art career (and also, y’know. making enough money to survive), which puts a hamper in Flora’s budding feelings for him. They do manage to snag a few cafe outings, however, and Flora decides to finally stop dancing around the subject and straight up ask Helia out during the stay at the Wildlands, which he accepts. They start dating shortly afterwards, and while they do face some issues (mostly with Flora’s somewhat overbearing caring and protective nature and Helia’s tendency to ignore everything around him), they keep steady and secure.

AU COUPLES

Sky and Riven: They have a rivalry for most of S1, but it’s more thanks to Riven’s standoffish attitude and Sky matching his stubborness that leads them to clash. Riven does tend to ignore Sky, but that’s because he doesn’t want to risk exploding on him and having to be relocated to another team, which only raises Sky’s curiosity more. Riven doesn’t date Darcy on the AU, but he does become close friends with her, which she milks for all its worth, alongside the fact people don’t know she’s part of the Trix in my AU until the nightmare attack. Riven considered her a great friend and the revelation she’s one of the witches that has been making his and his new friends’ lives hell shakes him quite a bit. After that it’s closer to canon - he goes to confront her and ends up trapped. Sky spends the rest of the arc worried sick for him and instinctively runs to hug him (which surprises him), but he’s beat by Stella, happy her oldest friend is still alive. They start to hang out more in S2, and start thinking of each other differently though they don’t realize it yet. Brandon and Stella can read them like an open book though, so they start subtly nudging them together without rushing them, knowing how Sky is kinda awkward about romance and Riven’s a stubborn dude. This carries over to S3, when after the attack on Eraklyon by Valtor and Sky’s sudden possesion makes Riven realize he’s in love with him by how crushed he feels hearing Sky give the speech about marrying Diaspro after al. (Sky is possesed here by Valtor himself disguised as a servant, rather than being poisoned by Diaspro, and to keep this cover he also makes Sky kidnap her). After Stella manages to remove Valtor’s mark from him, he gets seriously ill and stays in Eraklyon to recover, and Riven decides to stay with him to nurse him back to good health. It’s thanks to Riven’s care that Sky realizes he’s also in love with him, but they don’t confess to each other until that danceclub trip later in the season, during the middle of a dance because I’m a sappy fuck. They do have to tackle some communication issues from time to time but my Riven has the unique power of Having A Therapist, so they tend to resolve them peacefully though it takes a bit.

Aisha and Musa: do I even need to explain this one? We all saw S2. Anyways, Musa and Aisha strike a friendship during S1 thanks to their love of music and dance, and start hanging out on the regular alone. Musa was crushing on her from the second she saw her, but kinda dismissed her feelings until they knew each other better, until she started falling in love for real near the end of S1. Aisha takes longer to reach that same point, however. After escaping Shadowhaunt she lowkey clings to Musa for support, and she’s the first one she speaks with when her nightmares come back. Their lowkey date on Earth starts to give shape to Aisha’s feelings finding herself crushing back, and during the trip to the Wildlands she realizes she fell in love when her first thoughts after getting lost were all about Musa, and only her. Aisha takes the first step and asks Musa out during the interlude between S2 and S3, and start a relationship fully during S3.

Bloom and Diaspro: they don’t get the best of starts, what with Bloom’s paranoic ass attacking Dia and all. Bloom feels horrible about the event once the reveal is done, and kinda ignores both Dia and Sky for the longest time until she feels she can talk to Sky and apologize to Diaspro fully. Diaspro stays on Magix during the attack of the Trix (though rather than trying to go fetch Sky she had gone to Alfea to speak with Bloom personally), but they don’t get a chance to properly speak about anything with a war on their hands. They do get a small talk right before Sky and Bloom leave for Cloud Tower, but that one basically amounted to “we all kinda fucked up, let’s be friends regardless” and it didn’t went deeper than that. During the interlude between S1 and S2, Bloom goes with Sky, Stella and Diaspro to Domino once more to find a way to release Daphne from the mirror she’s trapped in (and how to get to the mirror in the first place), and after getting separated from the rest Bloom and Diaspro finally get the chance to properly talk about what happened. Bloom apologizes for what she did, Diaspro apologizes for how she treated her as well (since she did badmouth her in public in a bad attempt to save face), and with the promise to be friends and Diaspro getting her Glamourix, they manage to get closer. It doesn’t develop into love until well into S2, after Diaspro enrolls in Alfea and she and Bloom get even closer. Diaspro starts to realize she’s falling in love with Bloom shortly before the Shadow Bloom shenanigans, but keeps it hidden for a bit as to not dump one more thing for Bloom to worry about. Bloom on her part did develop a crush on Diaspro, but she feels it’s more akin to her minor crushes on Sky and Stella since she has a thing for blondes, so she doesn’t think much of it until the S2 finale, when Diaspro actively taking a blast from her crazed self to snap her out of the spell hits her heart hard, inmediately being filled with regret and sadness and undoing her transformation, the negative emotions overwhelming the fabricated euphoria. Dia earns her Enchantix thanks to this act and survives, however, and with renewed fervor she manages to destroy Darkar with the rest. During the interlude between seasons she starts thinking her feelings for Diaspro, wondering if she’s truly falling in love with her of if it’s just because she saved her life. It’s when Diaspro gets kidnapped on Eraklyon thanks to the possessed Sky that she realizes that she does love her, but she doesn’t get to confess her feelings at that point. It’s during the trip to Omega in search of Tecna, when in a moment where they though they might die, that Bloom confesses her emotions. Diaspro does the same, and they hug awaiting serious damage from a falling stalactite (as both of their legs were stuck on a small crevice) and being saved by Tecna at that very moment. They start properly dating after that adventure.

The Legacy Continues

Well, I made it! I made it. There are three days left of 2020 until we roll into 2021. This year has been a game changer. Game changer doesn’t seen correct...life altering sounds better. My life drastically changed within the past month. Though these events threw me off my game, I recovered and bounced back even stronger. This speaks to my tremendous strength in the Lord & within myself. I continue to tell myself that the fortune teller I spoke with summer 2019 has been spot on y’all. August 2020 to now, adjust to my new life has been challenging, but I don’t regret my decision moving to Massachusetts. This decision is part of the life-course God has plan for me.

Yes, I miss my family. However, my experiences of attending Bridgewater College and traveling to Thailand has prepared me for this moment in my life. Because of covid I haven’t really been active in my new environment, but I try to take advantage of the opportunities I do have to explore my surroundings. Last week I took a nice walk and ended up exploring another part of Newton and almost ended up in the inner city of Boston (I think I walked about 8 miles in total). I took another walk into town and walked into HomeGoods on my way to Starbucks. Leaving and returning to Boston, I took the train and was able to get myself to and from the Logan airport. Small victories in my book! I am in no rush to try to experience everything all at once. I have around 4 to 5 years to embrace Boston as my new home. I already feel like it is anyway. This is my true testimony to see if I can really be responsible for myself. So far, I feel confident in achieving/excelling in this area of my life. My upbringing has prepared me, yet again, for the challenges of [young] adulthood. 

I am getting ahead of myself. I have to rewind a bit give y’all an update. December 18th was the last day of classes and finals week. I have successfully finished my first semester of grad school!!! YEAH ME!!!!! I’m telling you the hard work paid off. I did have my moments of doubt and feelings of not being good enough. I was overwhelmed. I felt like I was drowning trying to balance school, work, and my internship. On top of that, I am trying to balance a relationship along with working on my mental health. My mind & body is always on the go. No time for rest...actually there are moments of rest, but I chose not to rest instead. I have a bad habit of pushing through and bulldozing my way through my life. I don’t take the necessary time to be present and focus on what is in front of me. Sometimes, I get too focused on the future and forget to enjoy the present. I have been in this mode since mid October to the 18th. Midterms kicked me in the ass because that was around the same time I began working at chipotle. Even before Chipotle, I was falling behind on the readings and assignments for my classes. On the other hand, my internship with Amirah is not a stressor in my life because it is an experience that I am passionate about. I’m not bothered having to wake up early and end my days late when it comes to my internship because I am that committed. Being overwhelmed and stressed I passed all my midterms with good grades (all As and one B)! Then the unexpected happened...

October 29th at 11:18pm, I received a phone call from my mother informing me that my Grandmother Shirley unexpected passed away. I think they determined her cause of death was because of a heart attack. I’m not sure. Honestly, I don’t think I really want to know. I’m hoping she passed away peaceful. The news sent me into shock. I just couldn’t believe it. I still can’t believe it. I just had a conversation with that previous Thursday or Saturday, and the conversation went so well. She was so proud of me. She was excited for me to be home for Christmas and all these other things. It’s not the same, but at least we were able to say “I love you” before she passed. Who would’ve known that would be the last time I will ever speak to her again. And this had to happen around the holidays and around the same time that Laura Mae (my great grandmother passed away). In less than three weeks, I received a phone call and text early in the morning from my Grandma Louise and my dad telling me that my granddaddy unexpectedly passed away too. Two grandparents removed from my life at the snap of the finger.

With help from my family, I was able to fly to Virginia for both funeral services. This time I said my final good-byes unlike with Laura Mae. I didn’t want to live with that guilt. Everyone has been very compassionate, understanding, and accommodating to my situation and has given me time to grieve & heal especially regarding BC, Amirah, & Chipotle. I missed a few classes and had to receive a few extensions on a couple of assignments. I pulled through the best way I could manage in my emotional state. My emotional state didn’t get any better dealing with my relationship during this time. Some of my boyfriend’s recent decisions added more unnecessary stress in my life. I was already stressed about me introducing him to my entire family because the timeline got rushed and I wasn’t for sure if I wanted him around while I’m going through a mental & emotional meltdown. At the end of the day, he wanted to be there for me to provide his live and support and I wasn’t going to deny him of doing so. It would’ve been selfish of me to tell him “No”. Everything happens for a reason. Instead of spending maybe two weeks together, my boyfriend and I spent basically all of November together bouncing between Gloucester and Woodstock. It sucked that it had to be under sad circumstances.

Decisions, decisions, decisions that is where my mind was at. Only a few individuals gave me the needed space to focus & process my emotions. From all angles I was being pressured to make some permanent decisions in which my mind was not in the right mind frame to be thinking. I did reach out and have been receiving counseling services from the university which has been helpful. I am in the process of searching for a therapist outside of the university for long-term treatment. Though I tell myself sometimes I feel like quitting, I decided to remain a full time student, declared my concentration, and completed my field placement application for 2021-2022 academic year. I’m on tract to graduating Spring 2022. Being blessed again, I was able to receive extensions on two of my finals and on my field placement assignments. I passed all my finals! I received all As and one B+. I ended the semester with a 3.6 GPA. Not too shabby (lol). I know my grandparents are very proud of me.

I’m proud of myself! I didn’t surrender and take the easy way out. I turned 24 on the 7th which is another milestone in my life. I was shown much love that exceeded my expectations. I spent the Christmas alone, but I made the best out of my situation & was still able to connect with my loved ones. Since the 18th I devoted my downtime, and overall winter break taking better care of myself. The last week I was home, I noticed that I’ve been severely neglecting myself and it was heavily damaging my well-being. I’m growing in setting and maintaining my boundaries, learning to be present with emotions & resting, being okay with saying “no” and not feeling guilty about it. The most important lesson is not overworking myself in every aspect of my life. I am no good to myself or others if I am completely burnt out. 

I am praying that 2021 isn’t a continuation of this year. Yet, 2020 has not been all too horrible. I have been able to grow in so many ways that I am becoming a better individual. Most important, I’m continuing to learn how to be a better person for myself!

maybe a dumb q but is it uncommon to not relate to any grip/loop behaviour patterns? I for sure must have been in a loop/grip at some point in my life, but i just dont think i relate to just a single particular set of stress behaviours. i read the descriptions and arent they just generally... a bit vague? being irritable, withdrawal from others, self doubt, sleeplessness or oversleeping. how are these related to just one function? arent these things just common traits of a depressive episode? /1

even thinking of the times ive had depression all i did was: self loathe, play pc games, sleep, cook all the damn time even tho i barely ate anything to the point i couldnt fit any more food into my fridge, self isolate, not speak to anyone, despair, overthink, and cry. isnt that mroe or less just... common depressive behaviour? how is anyone suppose to relate that kind of disordered behaviour to any type? sorry if this is stupid btw lol i can be kinda dense /2

I don’t know if it’s common or not but I’m pretty sure it’s more normal to feel this way than not to feel this way, and here’s why.

You actually might not have ever been in a grip or loop in your life! There was a good shitpost a while ago which was like “remember how you once thought you were so twisted and unredeemable and it turned out you were just like, 15” and I think that the “I am damaged, I am unhealthy, I have undergone such trauma” mindset gets really unhealthily amplified on Tumblr and in typology circles, and it’s one that should get shut down far more than it does, and while that’s a whole other post, the summary is lots of people are like “I think I’m TERRIBLY UNHEALTHY and I’ve been looping for YEARS” and 99.9% of the time either they have a very standard and reasonably treatable mental illness, they are mistyped and so their standards for what healthy looks like are wildly incorrect for who they actually are, or they’re just like, cranky and melodramatic and need to take a nap.

It’s also of course entirely possible you have been in a grip or loop if you were, chances are your mind was on something else and your memories of that time are not going to be Ah yes, I recall when my tertiary function’s impulses were used to validate the worst impulses of my dominant function which then reinforced those tertiary function behaviors; they’re going to be “I remember when I was going through some really bad times.”

I don’t know which descriptions you read because the ones I have linked aren’t quite that vague, but things like irritability, withdrawal, self-doubt, and sleeplessness are indeed pretty universal stress behaviors (and this includes acute stress that falls short of mental illness - like, a breakup or finals week can lead to this sort of behavior). They can’t and shouldn’t be linked to any specific type.

Which brings me to my point, which is I think I have, at least for the past couple years, been increasingly clear in that I think typing off of stress behaviors is an unequivocally bad idea. It’s bad because a lot of stress behaviors are widespread symptoms of either normal levels of stress or various mental illnesses (ie, you are 100% justified in asking how one could possibly relate the general behaviors you describe to a type). It’s bad because it pushes you to focus on yourself at your worst instead of at your normal baseline functioning, which absolutely, in my opinion, is going to perpetuate that edgy I Am Damaged mentality for people who are completely average in terms of health, and make it easier for people who actually are dealing with mental illness to think it’s just who they are instead of a treatable situation that can be improved. It’s bad because people are the least likely to be able to consider themselves objectively and calmly in those moments, and neurologically, it’s actively hard to remember things when you’re depressed, stressed, or grieving - like, if you are clinically depressed for a couple of months, you will not form new memories of that time in the same way you normally would! So typing off of stress basically is like ‘hey take this thing about which you have little in the way of valid information and which makes you feel bad about yourself and hyperfixate on this only and use it to consider something that’s supposed to be a model of your personality at large’. It is such a bad idea and I have theories as to why it caught on but it doesn’t matter because it just needs to stop.

This isn’t to say looping and gripping aren’t worth considering, but if you read Was That Really Me, the text that defined gripping, there are some worthwhile takeaways. First: this book is the observations of an external party (the psychologist who wrote it), not the observations of people actually living it. Second, while there’s some advice on what to do, it’s from the perspective of that therapist, a person who has been explicitly brought in by those people experiencing stressors to help.

I don’t think the intent of introducing the concept of gripping was to help people type themselves or avoid the step of seeking some kind of help during a period of stress, but rather to provide some explanations for patterns of behavior, perhaps indicate some warning signs, and show how psychologists who use MBTI apply it.

More generally, understanding the loop and grip for your type can help show you the specific thought process behind certain stress behaviors you have as an individual that are not explicitly symptoms of depression or anxiety, but it’s a thing to look at after you already have figured out your type from other means, and it’s a potential pitfall, not a thing that you’ve necessarily experienced.

So, given Dabi's perceived incompetence, you think his scars are self inflicted? I figured that, if Dabi is indeed Touya, he must have tried to impress Endeavor and show him that he is "worth it". So he probably tried to train himself in seclusion. But with a body meant for ice, he was not able to handle the flames and ended up burning himself and running away, traumatized or something along those lines. Admittedly, it could be a stretch, since we have no details on what exactly happened.

Had a bunch of asks about Dabi in my inbox after my Dabi post but I got distracted thinking about ships… I’m back now and gonna answer a few that are all about that Dabi is a Todoroki theory~

Look man, if he’s not Touya, I will officially be the S H O O K E S T. At this point, the real plot twist would be if he wasn’t! I really think there are just so many signs at this point that I can’t make myself believe it won’t happen. I mean the fact that Horikoshi deliberately drew Endeavor’s eyesight being damaged before his confrontation with Dabi so that Endeavor wouldn’t be able to see him clearly??? COME ON.

But man we’re all going to look so stupid if he isn’t Touya…

As for how Dabi got his scars… I don’t have any answers, of course, just my own theories and conjectures based on vague statements and panels in the manga…

I guess first I’d point out that while we don’t know really much about Touya at all, we do know a couple things:

1) He physically took after Rei way more than Natsuo or Fuyumi did. Despite being Natsuo’s confirmed older brother, Touya was a tiny kid. Given that he would have to very close to Fuyumi in age or older than her, the fact that he was shorter than his sister just makes this all the more noticeable. This kind of tininess is usually (although of course not always) a deliberate visual indicator that there was something wrong with the child’s health. Looking at the only two panels he appears in definitely gives the impression that he was a pretty fragile-looking kid who I would not be surprised to hear had health problems (bad fevers from an overpowered fire quirk, anyone?).

2) His posture in this frame is also pretty telling. They all look nervous–it’s obvious they’re being looked at by Endeavor and are uncomfortable with it–but while Natsuo looks a little shame-faced and Fuyumi a little confused, Touya is clutching his hands together in a classic “timid child” pose. It seems likely to me that he wasn’t an especially assertive kid.

3) Then there’s the whole hair issue–is his hair red like the anime or white like the manga? The only reason I could see for not coloring his hair dark in the manga is that Horikoshi specifically uses black ink for the red color of the Todoroki family’s hair–coloring Touya’s hair completely black would make it beyond obvious that he’s Dabi. But still, couldn’t he have used tone like he does for Kirishima’s hair? We know that white hair = ice quirk, so I am very interested to find out whether the anime has it right in using red, or whether the white used in the manga is plot relevant, and we’re going to find that Touya really did have a body meant for an ice quirk…

4) We also have Natsuo’s ominous comment:

To me at least, this statement seems somehow… specific? Like there was some Big Deal™ that immediately caused Touya not to be in their lives anymore, and Endeavor was directly involved in it. Natsuo definitely strikes me as the type who would blame Endeavor for a training accident, even if Touya was training of his own free will, but I can’t personally shake the feeling that Endeavor was right there whenever the Bad Thing with Touya happened and that Endeavor, Fuyumi, and Natsuo all know more about Touya’s fate than they’re willing to talk about. I think it’s important that we’ve never seen a scene of Natsuo and Fuyumi getting any close looks at Dabi either.

6) The kids’ ages are important I think. Shouto is about five years old when he sees his siblings playing soccer, and they all looked about the same age there as in this second screen cap, although I wouldn’t put Fuyumi at 12 in the screen cap above, so maybe not… In any case, we know that Shouto was already in training (~5 years old) and Touya had no major visible scars. So Touya made it to at least 12 years old without doing major damage to his body (although of course it could be under the clothes). Based on that, personally I would doubt a bit that he was training and burning himself in secret, at least not for any extended amount of time.

6) The one piece of evidence we have for figuring out what actually happened to cause the scars is the burn pattern itself, especially on Dabi’s face. One thing that people have often pointed out is that Dabi’s facial burns line up fairly well with the places fire also settles on Endeavor’s face:

Also I’m pretty sure Dabi officially qualifies as BNHA’s biggest glow up. If you compare chapter 67 to chapter 190 it’s like looking at two totally different characters lol

But, more importantly than this, I think, is the fact that we never see Dabi’s fire take this shape in the manga. Although in a couple of scenes his flames have covered parts of his face, we’ve never–not even one time–seen fire specifically come from below his eyes or around his mouth like Endeavor. This is not something that normally happens with his quirk–which could mean that he was copying Endeavor when the injuries occurred.

So what did happen?

I don’t know, but if you ask me for a personal headcanon about it:

In a desperate attempt to protect his mother from being taken away and forced into the mental institution, Touya Todoroki challenged his father to a fight he could never win and pushed his own body so far beyond its limits that he nearly died.

I mean, if sweet baby Shouto had a reaction this intense:

Just imagine the reaction of the children who would have been conscious to see their mother ripped away from their home, possibly violently, possibly forever? With Rei having snapped hard enough to attack Shouto, I can’t imagine that she would have taken well to Endeavor physically confronting and restraining her to force her away… It could have been quite a horrific scene in the house after Shouto passed out from the pain, and what better way to cover up damage to one kid then to blame Rei, who had already damaged the other? This would help lend greater credence to Rei still being in the mental institution too: if the doctors have her on the record for causing or at least provoking the injuries of not one son but two…

Obviously such a fragile-looking child as Touya, who we know was never formally trained, would have stood no chance against an absolutely enraged Endeavor, but if we know one thing about the Todoroki family, it’s that they’re stubborn beyond belief. Endeavor probably batted aside his failure of an eldest son like it was nothing… but Touya refused to stay down. I think, overwhelmed by hatred and resentment, he put everything he had into trying to fight back against his father, bursting with flames too hot for his ill-suited body, heedless of his own pain.

That break in Dabi’s bottom lip is from the unprotected skin splitting as he screamed in rage and agony while on fire. Just sayin’!!

And even after going beyond his limits in every way, to still inevitably be crushed beneath his father’s heel… I can’t imagine the degree of loathing such a miserable defeat would make a child feel for heroes and all of hero society who let down the Todoroki siblings so badly…

If Touya ran from the hospital afterward, we could even be looking at a situation in which Dabi has been raising himself all alone since he was 12 or 13. Hell, he might even have caught the tail-end of Stain’s soapbox speeches about the revival of heroics while living out on streets…

BUT, YOU KNOW, that’s just my imagination running wild. XDD

I’m sure that my headcanon is too exaggerated to be true, but I do think the scars are self-inflicted and that Touya did fight with Endeavor at some point before abruptly leaving the Todoroki household.

Or… he’s not even a Todoroki and he totally gave himself those scars just to look cool or something lolol.

Okay, being a little more serious, I think it’s mostly being used the same way as that one scene of Itachi in the rain in Naruto:

It’s basically a scene used to humanize and show a tiny glimpse of a “villain” character’s hidden depths–is Dabi all evil, or is there some softness underneath?

The blood is definitely supposed to symbolically represent tears, which actively tells the reader “Something about the idea of families hurts Dabi.” Coupled with the fact that he’s also smiling in a way that does not suit the moment at all and talking about how thinking about what Snatch said actually drove Dabi crazy, I think we’re also supposed to be getting the feeling that Dabi is not quite as calm and collected as he seems to be on the surface. We all love to call him the “sane man” in the League of Villains’ sea of crazy, but it’s entirely possible that Dabi is experiencing or has, at some point, experienced a psychotic break and that the almost lazy, unaffected behavior we see from him most of the time is little more than a thin veneer on top of a much less stable inner-mind…

What interests me is how many people (even the BNHA wiki) seem to suggest that these symbolic blood tears indicate that Dabi feels remorse for the families of all his victims… But I wonder if that’s really the case at all.

Does he feel remorse regarding his victims’ families… or only his own? While I think it’s tempting to imply that Dabi feels bad about all the families he’s hurt in general (which would be a good redemption arc flag), I’m actually inclined to think that Dabi is a little more self-centered character than that, and it’s his own family that’s on his mind here, not guilt over strangers he’s never met and never will meet.

I lol’d. Even more than that–by saying this to Endeavor, he’s almost certainly ensured another Dabi vs. Endeavor clash in the future, so like… he basically gave his dad impenetrable plot armor for another 50-100 chapters. XDDD

do people ever try to absorb the souls of recently dead loved ones (presumably with their prior consent), like in some morbid attempt to be with them forever? or could someone deliberately absorb a soul and then sacrifice themself, allowing the second soul to take over? seems like something a hopeless romantic might try, or the potential beginnings of a cult!

 ohgg,  thmank you for the question… always interesting to consider other things I didn’t think about before lol! hmmm… Both of these things are definitely possible, but like with most nonsense in realm of magic, there would be a lot of potential downsides and ways it also wouldn’t work well lol. ((tw for vague mention of death and occasional mention of suicide in the context of self sacrifice)) [also i think this ask is in reference to this post about soul magics here (link), so there’s the context] 

It could be done, though they would have to keep in mind that, there can really only be one main soul in a body at once (with the exception of a few very temporary things like possession or certain soul magics where people enter the dreams of others or etc.). 

Absorbing the soul would inevitably mean the other person would just fade away into the Main Soul, so though perhaps you could communicate with them inside of you for a while, they would eventually fade and just become an indistinguishable part of you. Which I guess could have symbolic meaning to a person, but it wouldn’t be as if you could keep them alive within you and have regular conversations with them forever or anything. 

But I guess would be interesting, or moreso creepy, to know like, the past 10 loved ones that have died you just absorbed into yourself, you could get more powerful while also possibly justifying that you now ‘’carry a part of them everywhere you go’’ or something… though I’d still see the decision to absorb them rather than find a better solution for dealing with the souls as somewhat suspicious (like even if it was consensual I’d wonder if the people absorbed were tricked by a possessive partner into thinking that was the only option, or were otherwise not well informed, since the field of soul magic would have plenty other ways to keep people alive longer if that was the goal, thus them choosing to absorb the souls would indicate in some way that their goal isn’t to keep them alive/spend more time with them,  but merely to absorb for the sake of getting some emotional satisfaction out of knowing they’ve consumed their dead loved one into themselves, which again,, Suspicious lol… )

 Though the idea does present some interesting dynamics, especially with secrets and stuff, like if you absorbed a loved one and went through that process where you can experience bits and pieces of their consciousness for the first few days and were to find out something through their secondhand memories or traumas that they had never even told you about while they were alive, and now it’s too late to address since they’ll be fading away soon, or etc. And other similar possible ~~dramatic~~ issues which could occur lol

This would probably just be pretty pointlessly masochistic (not in a sex way lol but like, general concept of ‘knowingly putting yourself in pain’ ) for the person doing it though, since as mentioned, soul absorption is incredibly painful physically, as well as I’d imagine it’d be kind of difficult to be bombarded with a mild first hand experience of your loved one’s internal state and fears and memories and probably even have some degree of a dialogue with them while they’re fading away.. I don’t know anything about this stuff since I never have relationships or anything, but I could imagine that if you have a loved one who has died and is currently trapped within you and fading further, temporarily adopting elements of their internal experience would be like.. worse??  Like you can’t even step away from the fact that it’s happening and your consciousnesses are now briefly merged to a degree, you basically are dying with them in spirit as they pass away a second time from your soul entirely consuming theirs, hearing their last thoughts as they pass away, feeling the emotions they feel as they die and become absorbed into your own soul (all whilst you’re probably having severe physical health issues from the magic and etc.).. just seems.. Bad… 

But I guess I could see someone impulsively deciding to do this out of weird desperation despite it basically being pointless suffering for a few days only to have the consciousness and personality and etc. of the loved one as they know it STILL be entirely lost after all the effort anyway. I accidentally tend to ignore the emotional side of things and the fact that people don’t always act rationally (the biggest area where I think my own personality and mental illness based emotional deficits kind of limit me when worldbuilding, I always forget to think about stuff like romance or attachments to others or feelings about people making you act in not entirely logical ways and how that could affect magic/the world/etc, since that’s so entirely removed from anything I could ever personally experience lmao) , so given that, it’s definitely possible someone somewhere has done this in the  millions of  years that conscious living beings have been in Nanyevimi. Not all people would use soul magic reasonably or be calm and aware of all possible ways to magically solve a problem, especially after a loved one has just died or something. 

However, since someone has to be high level in soul magics to do any absorbing to begin with, I still think it would be likely they would find a better solution. There ARE many cases of loved ones dying and people using soul magic to trap their soul into an inanimate object temporarily until they can find another host for the soul, then like, going out and murdering someone to use their body to put the soul of their loved one in so they can live on or etc. etc. But this is still limited by the fact that, high level soul magics like this are very inaccessible to a majority of the population, and you’d also be taking a huge risk, you could easily fracture or damage your loved one’s soul during this process, leading to a lot of situations like the super common trope of “i did some weird magic shit to bring someone I love back to life and they’re not totally the same any more/I wish i hadn’t have done it due to the consequences/They don’t remember me anymore/They’re a monster/They’re in so much pain i hate seeing them this way it isn’t worth it/etc” . 

It can definitely work fine, it would just be highly uncommon to face no complications lol. This is something people do with themselves a lot too, though likely if you’re able to do soul magics you’d also be advanced enough to find an efficient way to keep your own body immortal, some people do practice regularly jumping from body to body when their old one dies, constantly taking on different identities and etc (especially people who have lived thousands of years and maybe just want to , ~~spice things up~~  by living in various bodies, though the same thing could be more easily achieved through just keeping one immortal body and regularly using heavy shape-shifting, I could still see someone deciding to exclusively take various living unaltered bodies for The Authenticity or something lol ). I would say body jumping or finding new forms for your soul/the soul of a loved one to inhabit would be a  more common tactic of soul/life preservation than like, trying to just merge their soul with your own. 

I guess a way the soul merging with a loved one COULD work is if you timed it exactly right , like how I mentioned that if you die before fully absorbing the souls you’re attempting to absorb, it can lead to being alive yet permanently trapped in a strange partially combined state?? So I guess that would be possible, to like make your physical body die somewhere halfway into the process and hope you get the desired result and then jump that soul into a new body in your new combined form… However there’s still so much that could go wrong, it would be impossibly rare to actually time correctly and get the intended result of your souls now existing as one bigger soul split evenly between the both of you with 100% of each soul still fairly in tact (as opposed to the more likely options, loosing parts of yourself or parts of them, destroying both of your souls entirely, etc. Especially if you’re the only one in the pair that can use soul magics, if something goes horribly wrong during the process with YOUR soul, you could easily trap them in a situation they don’t have the skill to get out of, so now they’re like traumatized that you destroyed yourself trying to save them and on top of that, stuck in some shitty half fractured soul void state and unable to do anything to help themselves since you’re the only one that can do that type of magic and now you’re gone or so faint/broken that you can’t perform the task anymore, etc.) . 

Additionally idk how like, good that would be in the first place, most situations where two separate souls live in one body are cases where things have gone badly, situations that nobody would actively choose, since there becomes a lot of control issues in terms of being able to effectively pilot the body with two sets of impulses and moods and experiences happening at once, being able to use magic while technically two people of different levels are existing, even stuff like being able to think with two consciousnesses occurring simultaneously, etc. Two souls combined into one don’t take turns in a body, especially if partially merged, they’re effectively in a weird state of counting as one singular Main soul yet maintaining separate aspects, so it’s basically just a constant “one arm wants to do this and the other wants to do this” type situation, it’s not like one person can take charge and control it or you guys switch out, it’s more of a constant, everything at once always all at the same time.. which predictably, people are not very fond of. 

Even if they’re like, the love of your life or something, it would be incredibly difficult to co-pilot a body together. For the few freak cases where this has actually happened to people, usually even simple things are hard, like just feeding yourself or walking or doing anything really.  I guess theoretically you could train yourselves to be so incredibly in sync that your impulses and thoughts and etc. are no longer as conflicting and you can operate mostly okay (maybe like how some conjoined twins are that share a body or etc.), but it would take a very very long time to get used to since you weren’t born that way and had previously existed separately, and additionally would likely still be dealing with the leftover health effects or consequences of that type of magic so.. idk?? It’s an option, but I’m not sure how satisfying it would be… especially if you ever fell out of love or started to dislike the person and then it’s just like.. lol well.. now you’re trapped in the same body?? so, whoops

Additionally, over time there is a natural tendency to merge anyway, even in the case of a big ‘’Soul Magic Gone Wrong horribly fractured  5 people trapped together at once into one big Main Soul most all of them being in an incomplete state’’ sort of thing, it would still gradually lean towards everyone else fading into whichever the strongest or most present soul is. Like if they’re all broken partial souls but one person has retained 75% of their soul and there are no big power level disparities that would tilt the balance otherwise,, that may be the main soul others integrate into. So even if you could manage piloting one body for a while, you’d still gradually merge into one another, inevitably loosing the unique consciousness of one of you (or in the rare case you’re fairly equal then perhaps you’d just combine into something like a new unique person that is a strong combination of both), it would just be over the course of  years, as opposed to all at once in a matter of a few days like in actual soul absorption. Maybe if you were really really skilled at soul magics and handling souls you could do things to delay this or etc., but any case where multiple presences are in one body at once will always lean towards complete absorption of some sort, it seems to just be a natural law of this sort of magic for whatever reason. 

And probably by a few years you would have long decided that two people living in the same body, despite loving each other or whatever, is extremely difficult and you’ve got to find someone with the skill to separate the both of you back into unique souls again,,, Which again would just lead back to ‘why did you even initiate absorbing them in the first place if you could have kept their soul separate and found another way to keep it alive, which would have saved you the trouble of merging and separating first’ .

But again, I could see it maybe being done impulsively, or in the rare case that someone somehow has high skill in soul magic yet is ignorant of all the effects or things you can do with it (perhaps someone using borrowed powers, or who is pretty reckless and doesn’t read up on their craft as well as they should since they think they can skate by with raw skill alone, etc. etc.), so when their loved one dies they panic and capture the soul and think “oh, I don’t have a safe place to store them until I find them a new body, I guess I can just put them in my own for now!!”,,  totally unaware that the second they do this they’re going to begin to irreversibly eat away the essence of their loved one.. that would probably add a whole extra layer of trauma to the usual awfulness of the soul absorption process lol.. Well I Was Trying To Just Do One Simple Thing  I Foolishly Thought Would Quickly Save Someone But Now I’m Crouched On The Floor In Pain Throwing Up Blood And Slowly Consuming Their Entire Soul Into Myself,, So Yes, My Day Is Just Fabulous Thanks For Asking. 

Like imagine seeing your loved one die, rushing into the situation to extract their soul to save them before they fade from their body,  thinking you’ll just store them inside of you for safe keeping until you’re out of a dangerous situation, only to a few minutes later collapse in extreme physical pain and start hearing them speaking from inside your own mind about how they feel weak and like they’re fading away, eventually after a few hours your just laying there hiding in a bush you dragged yourself to or something in so much pain you can’t move, and you can’t even hear their consciousness anymore, you know you did something wrong but your not sure what, but you think you killed them, or something like that.. but hey! you feel a little bit stronger! Almost like you’ve absorbed energy from an outside source or something! Hmm! That would be A Lot Of Bullshit to go through in a just a day or twolol.. this is why you read up extensively on magic before using it, especially not knowing what you’re doing when it comes to such extreme magics like soul magic is just, very very dangerous and potentially tragic.

Though if you don’t know what you’re doing, you may be more likely to die than actually absorb the soul, since like I think is mentioned in the broader magic post, you can’t really perform an action you don’t have the energy to do, and soul absorption is a sustained channel of energy over the course of usually a days - weeks.. I would assume if someone did that accidentally, they may not have planned to exert that much magic ahead of time, so instead of involuntarily absorbing the loved one fully they could always just, both die during the process due to the one entirely depleting their magical energy and then some.. which if the idea is that the person doing it is inexperienced already, I think would be the most likely way for it to end up lol.

 People accidentally kill themselves ALL THE TIME due to not having the experience to predict when a feat of magic would be too much for them to try, or using it incorrectly , or etc. etc. There are too many non-magic species for it to be like, the number one cause of death in the realm but, definitely among the magic capable portion of the population, various complications involving self-inflicted/accidental/unforeseen consequence related/etc. magical injuries would be the number one reason people die lol. Out of the population of magic capable species all together as a whole, probably around a good 50% die by magical means, mostly through accidents. If you don’t even know enough about soul magic to know that when you try to put a soul inside yourself you’ll likely start to absorb it (unless it’s done in a special way like in the case of temporary possessions or etc.), then you probably don’t know enough to pull it off in general, and rather than the despair of accidentally killing someone you thought you saved, it’d be more likely you’d just like, drop dead from not being equipped to handle the spell you just unknowingly set in motion.

As for sacrifice, you couldn’t always sacrifice yourself necessarily, since it’s essentially ‘the strongest soul is the one that merges with the Main Soul’ (which is usually hard to calculate due to how vague of a concept all this ‘soul’ stuff is anyway, but can be decently estimated.. sometimes).  So if you’re like, a jhevona (humanoid demon) skilled in soul magics and they’re a fairly unskilled average elf or something. They die, and you decide you’re going to sacrifice yourself, by putting their soul in your body so they can have it instead, no matter what you WANTED to happen (their soul piloting your body instead of you), you would inevitably just absorb them into your own soul because your life force is the stronger one. However,  if your soul is the weaker one then you probably could, since even if you initiated the soul absorption process it’s likely (even if they didn’t want this to happen), your weaker soul would end up being the one absorbed. Though I would wonder a lot about the trauma of putting them through that lol, they died and came back to life just to know that they only have a few days of dialogue with you before you fade away and merge with their main soul permanently, and then they resume life living literally in YOUR BODY, piloting theform of their dead loved one that they’ve just consumed into themselves, unable to escape reminders of the fact that you’re gone, unless they shape shift or find another body, which if they’re not skilled in soul magic and would be unable to do that, then you’ve kind of trapped them. 

They’d probably at the least be annoyed with you after the fact that you initiated the soul absorption process on them, knowing that they’re going to be the one ending up absorbing you, in the two or so days that you’d still exist enough to chat with them you’d probably get a lot of lectures after their initial shock and acceptance of what’s inevitably going to happen. If they were skilled in soul magics they could probably reverse what you did in the first few minutes before it could take effect (maybe you could fight back and forth for a while lmao, one initiating the soul absorption process and the other immediately stopping it, which would be Comedy TV Show Funney Hee Hee Ha Ha until one of your souls breaks into pieces or one of you just drops dead), however if they couldn’t do soul magic they’d just kind of have to.. chill.. nothing to do but wait around until they absorb you into themselves kind of against their will.

 You could possibly give your body to someone to use in a much easier way if there was a third person involved, though it wouldn’t really utilize soul absorption. You could kill yourself right after your loved one dies and have the third person take the soul of your loved one and put them in your body, so they would have a living form (since after you die you wouldn’t be able to transfer them yourself). Though this would really only make sense if, in this case, there are no applicable bodies/forms around anywhere close enough to get to, and your loved one’s body has been entirely destroyed by whatever killed them, thus in the group of the three of you, there are three accessible souls, yet only two currently utilizable bodies, yours and this third person. So you let your soul fade away, and then your loved one’s soul gets to keep your body.   But again I feel like it’d be very situational.. 

The biggest barrier for people not being able to do stuff like this is just, the fact that soul magics on this level are very rare and extremely difficult and risky to pull off, but it’s kind of like, once you’re someone who’s already high level in soul magics, your possible solutions to the situation would expand to the point that you wouldn’t need to do stuff like this? Unless it was a deliberate choice or mistake on your part. But kind of like, with the above, you wouldn’t HAVE to kill yourself to give them your body, if you had the skill you could maintain them trapped in an animal or even an inanimate object or something until you find them another body. And if their body is still fine, you could just use healing magic to heal their body, then place them back into their own body. Though I guess maybe if you were fairly low skill, and their body had been entirely destroyed beyond repair, but you would still need a third person to do the transfer after your body has died, so either that person would probably be skilled enough to help you find another solution, or like… not to be morbid but uh,, you could kill them and put your loved one in their body lol,, instead of just having them help you kill yourself and etc… If I was the third person in the above situation (especially if I was just some random dude that wasn’t really important to the other two people) and the High Level Soul Mage started to look at me right after their loved one just died I would probably… run away as fast as possible or get prepared in a fighting stance…. you know they’re about to kill you and take your body as a vessel to save the other person lmao

But! maybe in the case where YOU don’t know soul magics but your loved one does, and their body is completely destroyed, if they were still existing outside of a body temporarily but there weren’t any possible options around for them to hop into, knowing that if they’re out of an acceptable vessel for too long they’d entirely fade away, you could offer to expel your soul from your own body so they can then take your form and live on. But also I guess if they know soul magics they’d probably try to find a way to save you after the fact, either decline the gift of your body entirely or accept it and take your form but then capture your soul as it leaves and like.. seal it into a rock or something to carry it around with them while they desperately run around trying to find some living thing to murder so they can place you into a more applicable form before they’re no longer able to sustain you within the rock lol.   If they found you a body maybe they could eventually switch you both back (instead of them just piloting your body from now on and you having to be some random graveyard body). That’s probably the most plausible situation for sacrifice, where the person doing the sacrificing is the one who DOESN’T have the soul magic skill and is merely offering themselves as a vessel for someone who does,  etc etc etc,  but there are endless hypothetical scenarios, all of which are complicated and dangerous lol

As for the cult thing, yeah there are already a decent handful of cults that are basically just schemes for people to gather souls, idk if you read much about the Avirre’thel species (basically vampires) when I post about them, but that’s why people are always suspicious when things like the situation with the Avan and their ‘’god’’ happen (basically one of the groups of the Avirre’thel like, secluded themselves in caves and devotes all their time to the worship of a certain ancient demon named Yvteii). Since even in vampiric culture, where it’s extremely acceptable to make deals with jhevona (demons) and is one of the few cultures in Nanyevimi that doesn’t view them as some frightening other and actually adapts them fully into their society, even they are still suspicious when it comes to ancient demons, especially ancient demons having relationships with or followings among other less all powerful living beings..

 People who have the ability to do so and the moral compass to allow it will do anything to get souls, since it’s such an easy way to access more power and grow your strength, and with how scattered and isolated the supernatural realm can be sometimes, it’s uncomfortably simple for someone, especially who’s an advanced magic user, to like, show up in a random group of isolated people living in a forest and help them and perform a few ‘’miracles’’ (just regular high level magic, but maybe a type these people haven’t seen before, are too isolated to know of, etc.) for them, convince them to basically take you on as kind of a cultish religion leader and regularly reap souls from them. There have been many religious figures and etc. in the past that were just high level mages or ancient demons putting on a few fancy shows of magic for an otherwise magically ignorant group of isolated people, so they can basically just trick the people into believing in them and then make up some excuse for the people to give them soul pieces, or sacrifice whole souls, etc. 

Kind of like in those weird like, resource management type games where you can upgrade certain resources to gradually accumulate in the background whilst you do other stuff, some ancient jhevona or other beings will have like, 10 or 20 various cults lined up scattered in different places all across the realm who are regularly sacrificing to them or making deals with them and etc., giving them a steady income of power growth, new souls coming in monthly or weekly or whatever. Though, this usually gets old pretty quick since really the only groups you can trick into stuff like this are non-magical groups (since anyone in a culture that regularly practices magic would at the very least know to not give part of your soul to people or etc. and would be suspicious of any outside being coming and asking for sacrifices, even if they tried to be tricky and didn’t outright say “give me some of your soul”, and would also not be able to be wooed by Fancy Magic Tricks and Seeming Miracles, since they’d just be like “uhhh, that’s just normal magic” lol), and non magic groups typically have much weaker souls and shorter lifespans, which means inevitably your cult would die out and you’d have to go start a new one every few hundred years or so probably, and even then, it’s a lot of work for mostly weak souls that don’t amount to much gain when you’re already an immortal nearly all-powerful being lol. 

Soul harvesting cults are usually seen as like, a Baby Beginner Ancient Powerful Being sort of activity, since once you’ve been alive for like 15,000+ years you’re going to get tired of keeping up with all of them. It’s similar to how many ancient demons in their earlier years when they were just starting to get super powerful would do stuff like, shapeshift and become world leaders or etc. (the whole ‘all of these important historical figures are actually the same person!’ conspiracy except like.. actually true and done with magic lol), but then eventually you just get funcking tired of changing your entire identity every few hundred years and going through the same boring political exchanges to become royalty or lead an army or something when people seemingly never change and you’re just pulling the same nonsense but with a different face, etc. The cults and recognition that most powerful beings have are usually not ones they want or recognize, since once you’ve been that way for so long you usually just seclude yourself in a mountain somewhere.*(1) Because you’re basically the closest thing to an all powerful god being, no matter how much you try to hide, people will always attempt to find you and hunt you down and summon you to ask you for favors or powers or etc, and may even start a cult around you or consider you a god or etc, but usually at that point you want nothing to do with it. Voluntary cults are usually something powerful beings like ancient jhevona and etc. will grow out of pretty fast lol. 

So yeah, cults usually get old after a while, since if you have the power to start stuff like that in the first place, you probably have much better things to be doing than tricking random small villages into thinking you’re a god just so you can get a soul every few weeks or so. Many powerful beings would rather go for fewer more powerful souls, than larger amount of weaker ones (killing a few high level mages and absorbing their souls could be equivalent to a years worth of soul sacrifices from a tiny human farming village), have another better way of growing power, or are at the point where they don’t even feel they need to grow power anymore at all since it makes little difference. 

 BUT ANYWAY..  

In a way more similar to what is mentioned above, yeah I could also see it being a thing where you maybe use your ‘’close’’ (in “” since if one side isn’t being authentic then is it really ‘’close’’??)  relationships with people to trick them into willingly letting you have their soul after death, then secretly setting up situations that will kill them, and ‘’’consensually’’’ attaining their soul.  You could probably garner some sort of cult following using love and affection to manipulate people into giving souls to you, which I guess to me seems like too much effort like.. just be a plain ass serial killer then, what is the point in emotionally manipulating people ahead of time if you’re going to murder them anyway lol, but I guess some (incredibly shitty) personality types could get an extra kick out of that, or maybe the small strings of morality they have left in them require them to get ‘’consent’’ of some form first, even if under the context it’s not true consent and doesn’t matter, it could still help them rationalize their actions to themselves or something.

 But yeah.. soul cult stuff is rare simply due to the inaccessibility and rarity of soul magic in the first place, but as you can imagine, cults and other gimmicks to attain souls  can be pretty trendy among the tiny group of people who can actually gather them for absorption (at least for a while, until they get over that phase in their life lol). I could see a recently dead ‘’loved one’’ culty soul scheme being a thing. 

Hmm, but yeah lol, good questions! There are a lot of different ways things like that can go, and you always have time limits and ability limitations and amount of magic you can expend and the general risk and instability of magic (especially higher level magics) working hard against you, so I feel like many people would not try things like this in the first place, either due to their knowledge of a better solution, or just due to the risk (like maybe they’d rather their loved one just rest in peace rather than taking the huge risk of damaging the persons soul or condemning them to extra suffering and trauma or etc. due to unpredictable magic), but there are certainly scenarios where it may be applicable, or done as a matter of personal choice (especially in unhealthily dependent and abusive relationships, choosing to absorb the other person despite there being other ways to manage their soul after death may be plausible, definitely if you’ve just ‘’accidentally’’  killed them and can delude yourself into thinking it’s somehow noble or meaningful to keep them as a part of yourself or something gross shitty like that,, or just two well meaning but confused people who don’t know enough to understand there’s better options both agreeing to let one absorb the other since they think there’s not a better way, or perhaps misunderstand what actually happens (maybe they falsely believe you can keep someone around forever by absorbing them,etc)) , or out of desperation/lack of knowledge/lack of skill/emotional impulse/etc. Same with the sacrifice thing, though there may be better ways to go about it, if the person has the skill and is willing to take the risks, there are definitely situations where things could play out that way for whatever reason. Both are plausible applications of magic which I hadn’t considered until now!!

The typical (very broadly generalized/simplified ) life cycle for an ancient demon (which is basically just a term for an extremely world alteringly powerful being, they don’t actually have to be demons/jhevona, it’s more of just a title at this point than a true descriptor)  is usually like:

start off as totally regular person who trains extensively and studies magic

either work your way up normally with an enchanting business or do shady shit like killing people and absorbing their souls in order to grow your power and exceed your natural magical limitations (though you’ve got to have a very driven or otherwise power hungry personality to be motivated to do this in the first place, to go literally like 10,000+ years gaining your power without ever stopping or changing your goals (or dying in magical accidents).. like it usually takes 10,000 - 15,000 years to get powerful enough to even be close to being considered an “ancient demon” so like.. you’ve got to really be a purpose driven person)

This is usually why the exact personality profile of pretty much every ancient demon alive right now is like, “weird isolated nerd hiding in an ancient cave somewhere wholly and completely focused on some obscure task like unraveling the true nature of magic” or etc. Most any other type of person burns out after a while and just chooses to die (people who were only in it for power or glory with no higher motivation, people who were fools and died using their powers irresponsibly, people who got too involved with the world and it ended up being their demise,people who found it too hard and quit growing their power, etc.), it’s really just the very focused scientist types who have the motivation and reason to keep going, since you never run out of new material to study and things to be interested in if you’re the type of person who really wants to understand the nature of the entire world and is easily interested in everything etc. 

Of course this doesn’t mean many of them aren’t also like, completely weird as hell, or extreme power hungry narcissistic freaks who revel in their power over others and etc lmao.. You don’t live like..25,000+ years without developing a bit of an… “interesting” personalty. All of the 40 or so ancient jhevona currently known to exist are like.. absolutely ridiculous people in some way or another lol (at least in the few interactions they’ve had with the outside world, some are way more hidden than others, but none of them show themselves very often enough for anyone to know what their personality is truly like, but even based on one or two occurrences, it’s enough for people to be like “What the hell is like.. wrong with this person.. have they been living alone in a cave for 8,000 years or something?” (Yes, Actually.. They Have)). But just that at their CORE, regardless of what other traits they have, pretty much all of them have some element of 'extremely curious and highly motivated hermit scientist’ type in their personality. You don’t live 28,000+ years driven by a very shallow or single purpose, it usually tends to be people who have a lot of questions they want to answer or a lot of things they want to do (usually creating or discovering something, things that can be ongoing rather than one time goals), since that can be something you keep up for many many lifetimes without loosing motivation or becoming bored/disinterested. 

The act of being an ancient jhevona tends to favor the curious problem-solving scholar types, as even after thousands of years they can still find new issues to tackle, new interests to explore, new theories and challenges to unravel, etc. Even if their other traits vary wildly and many of them are legit like… downright insufferable on a level that only an ancient nearly all-powerful immortal being could be, they AT LEAST usually all have that trait in common. 

But anyway, so yeah like.. usually after a while they just dedicate themselves to some problem or area of study or something and hole away in a cave or other isolated place to experiment and think about things in peace, far away from the rest of the outside world. Though starting cults can be initially promising for them, pretty much any ancient jehvona who’s been around more than 16,000 years has passed that point in their life and is already in the 'Okay I’ll Just Be A Nerd Hermit Then I Guess’ phase where they become increasingly more obscure and detached enough that they couldn’t be bothered to maintain a cult presence or etc. ]

It's me again :-) can you write sfw headcanons of bayverse optimus, ratchet, ironhide, jazz, and bee with tsundere human s/o? They're all cool and tough but the second the bots get hurt, the human runs up to them kiss their boo boos~

((A/N I am actually not 100% thrilled with how this one turned out, so I apologize if it is a little sub-par, I am not very familiar with Japaneses Arch types, I haven’t watched anime in a very long time- I have quite a few issues with it a whole lol.

I hope that this is at least ok and a little bit of what you asked for, anyway

Optimus Prime

-There were a lot of rumors that were circulated around the top secret military base, which is a really funny thought when it is said out loud, but when you sit and actually think about it- it makes a lot of sense. The soldiers here have nothing to do here in the middle of nowhere but their job, and on their down time have very little things to fill the void of boredom. It was natural for rumors to begin and spread through close-quarter living like this, you just wished that the rumors weren’t revolving around you and your “personality problems”. You had quite the reputation of being a hardass, someone who is unnecessarily cruel for absolutely no reason- and honestly what was the point of fighting those rumors? Not only did it help maintain some semblance of power you had over some of these soldiers, it also helped keep the troops a little more entertained telling horror stories about their encounters with you. It was alright, you didn’t mind being the bad guy all the time, because those in your inner circle know you aren’t the hard-ass that everyone keeps painting you out to be- and really, that was the only thing that mattered in your book.

-Once, when your friend Optimus Prime returned to the base extremely dinged up and damaged, let’s just say that day your reputation for being a hard ass was wiped clean and you became the subject of a new rumor mill- “I’m a jerk, but only when my wubby bubby Prime isn’t hurt in the infirmary”. It was a weird rumor, and it made some of the soldiers no longer respect you, but you just couldn’t help yourself feeling such strong emotions that day when the Prime came back looking like he was kicked around and stomped on by some bot bigger than him- and that is saying something considering he was a very big mech. You were nearly in tears as you sat and watched Ratchet work on returning the Prime back to his full health- and that was the start of the crack in your hard perceived personality. The proverbial nail in the coffin to your facade was when you thought you were alone in the infirmary with the Prime, and you let it slip how important he was to you and how you wouldn’t know what to do without him- which is an ok thing to hear on its’ own, but as it turn out they were also watching and saw you give a small friendly smooch onto Optimus’ faceplate. You just wish the soldiers were a little more creative, as again, “wubby bubby Prime” did nothing but make you mad, and you ended up yelling at the ranks until they came up with some better insulting names… It turns out they aren’t exactly the best at being creative- but that’s ok, yelling was enough to make them not only think you were a hard ass again, but now you were a crazy hard ass. Optimus knew you were a big softie, but he would keep it to himself all the other times you broke apart and were a sweet and kind person.

Ratchet

-You were a little hard to get along with, due to your harsh words and your prickly personality, but you really were a good person underneath. You believed in the goodness of man, and you believed in people’s good spirit and will. You really did- but over the years your tough life and hard endeavours had caused you to be a little bit cynical and bitter than you would like to admit. People actually actively avoided the infirmary where you worked mostly throughout the day because they just didn’t want to deal with your bad attitude. It wasn’t your fault that most of these soldiers and politician did stupid things to put themselves in unnecessary danger, and if you were being honest, you hated all this conflict and war between humans themselves in the cybertronians you find yourself caring for. War was stupid, and if people just took the time to sit and talk then maybe they wouldn’t feel the need to put people’s lives in danger for absolutely no reason. Life wasn’t that simple though, things weren’t always black and white, and sometimes you wished that they were.

-Ratchet was a little sick of your bad attitude sometimes, and didn’t understand why you called him a close friend yet you continued to treat i as if he were nothing. Humans were a strange species- their biology was the easy part, but their psychology makes no sense to him. Also their need to build small structures, even in the presents of bigger and hardier life forms, they refuse to build things up to cybertronian code- he couldn’t count how many times he has scraped and scuffed his frame on narrow hallways and small door frames. You always seemed to get angrier ad angreier every time he would come back with a small nick or cut, but it wasn’t until he made himself bleed energon did you change your tune about his injuries. He came into the infirmary holding his side rather tightly, and as you passively asked what happened, he noticed your demeanor change once he declutched his side to weld the small wound shut. It looked like you weren’t really listening to his words- which wasn’t all that uncommon between the two of you but his sensors indicated that there was a big emotional shift in your body. Before he could ask, you began to do something he never thought you would, you asked if he was alright- and if he was in any major pain from his wound. He said that he was fine, but you didn’t believe him- you have never seen the old fool bleed before… it was a little scary to know these giant titans are actually vulnerable to physical attacks. After that situation, it was easy to say you got even more upset with Ratchet if he injured himself, but you were a little more gentle on him when he would bleed a little bit of his life fuel.

Bumblebee

-There was a lot to be said about what it takes to be someone who has to deal with politicians all day long- spoiler alert, it isn’t very fun and you always have to believe the one fact of life, that someone is always lying about something. Politicians are absolutely the worst kind of people, and will do or say anything to save face, needless to say it has caused you to become a rather bitter and angry person- your cynicism makes it a little hard for anyone to get close to you- which is honestly ok with you most of the time. You had a soft spot, at least for some people- and most recently some bots, but it was rare to be seen. You believed in tough love, it was a way for you to be strict to those around you- to prepare them for the real world of disaster known as the game of red tape and gaslighting,  basically dealing with real people and real power. Bumblebee was no exception, you really liked the bot, but boy was he too naive for his own good- too trusting and relaxed, he needed a big dose of reality, and you really don’t want to be there when that happens… On one hand he needs a good slap in the faceplate to see just how conniving and manipulative humans are, but on the other hand it would be a real shame for him to lose his sense of what is good and right- to many people in power lose sight of what is important, and that is what makes this world truly bad.

-You never really saw much of the combat side of things when it comes to your job and how you are involved in the Autobot cause, but the one time you saw the outcome of the real war these bots were facing, you had a big dose of reality slap you in the face. It was ironic really, you were the one getting reality checked for once, and you don’t think you have ever felt this way about anyone in a very long time. You saw poor Bumblebee injured and waiting on a medical table built for the bots, and you couldn’t help but gush a little over how happy you were that he was ok- it made him question you a little bit, but the attention was much appreciated. After that moment though, it was back to being your cold and hard self, and Bumblebee wasn’t afraid to say outloud how much he missed the softer side of you which was followed by a joke about how he should injure himself again just to see it. That wasn’t funny at all, and you made sure you let him know how gross and irresponsible that was and would be.

Ironhide

-Sometimes it was just easier to be mean than it was to be nice- not to say that you don’t like being nice, it was just hard to let your real emotions shine through when all people do is judge and hate you for it. Your appearance doesn’t help the fact that most people perceive you to be a brute rather than a lover- it was probably why you went into military work in the first place, it just sort of matched your personality and appearance. You learned long ago that people whom are willing to break down your barriers and find that soft squishy center underneath, those are the ones that you should be keeping around and trying to impress- not all these phoneys who put ona happy face and pretend to like you only to get something out of you. No, anyone special enough to see past your hard appearance and even harder personality was well worth keeping around, even when they are few and far in between.

-You would have never thought that the somebody whom could break through your hard exterior skin could be a big robot from outer space, especially if that robot was a trigger happy fiend like Ironhide was. He was a one of a kind bot who took your abuse with a grain of salt and simply laughed at you for being so bitter and angry all the time, saying things like you need to let loose and shoot more guns and to stop being such a downer all the time. It was always a back and forth between you twom but it was a back and forth you looked forward to everyday- that is until you heard about that bit ol’ bot getting hurt in a shooting range accident. When you went to visit him he was playing it cool like nothing ever happened, but he had his arm blasted off and he was leaking energon everywhere. The way Ironhide tells it, you basically melted into a pile of a sobbing mushy mess as you told him to be more careful and that you wouldn’t know what to do without him. He was kind of glad things went back to normal between the two of you when he was all fixd- he liked the harder personality you a little bit better than the crying mess in the infirmary.

Jazz

-You went into your elected seat promising all of your constituencies and voters that you would bring about great change o their area ,and that you would do everything in your power to make the world a better place- even if that meant becoming a liaison to a bunch of giant robots from space, aliens essentially, it wasn’t what you had in mind but it was what you had to work with. You had a reputation for being rather hard and cruel, and you had to be in your line of work, everyone always lied and everyone is out to get you, that was how the world worked. You didn’t hate the bot you were supposed to be working with everyday, but his lazy demeanor and his go with the flow vibe bothered you quite a bit- you have to have a plan for everything, you can’t just sit back and watch life go by without a plan. It was mostly you yelling at him, and him laughing about how stuck u you are, but there was a sense of trust between the two of you, as you knew how each other would react and function to new ideas.

-You didn’t think your soft spot for Jazz was all that big, until he came back to base badly wounded and leaking all kinds of strange fluid. He was going to be ok, but out of commission for awhile- and you made sure he was as comfortable as possible. He would make all those stupid jokes about how he has never seen you so sweet, and how you should be like this more often. You just huffed and told him to stop being stupid, and to hurry up and feel better do that you two could get back to business doing work to harbor peace between mankind and Autobots. He kept his thoughts to himself, but he laughed as his own processor said to get hurt more often, maybe you would learn to relax a little if that were to happen- he doubted it though, because as soon as we was well enough to leave the med bay, it was back to business as usual between the two of you. It was ok with him, and it was ok with you, and in the end that was all it took to help patch up Autobot-human relations.

Hi! New follower here, been stalking your the 100 tag and totally love your speculation (plus you are so point on!). I love your scientific input so would you mind if I asked a few questions over the hiatus? :) f. e. how did, in your opinion, Clarke pulled off the whole surviving thing? Directly after the death wave. I mean she stumbled into the lab, right? How come it didnt colapse? What about water, food, etc? Basically I am asking for your survival guide for this situation lol plus theories -

- theories how could Clarke and that green spot survive *_* Plus rover survived too, what the hell? That death wave was seen to melt everything it touches… and how come it ONLY takes 5 years in order for the radiation to go down considerably??? aaaarg, so many questions haha throw science at me, I will take anything you come up with :)

Ok first off, this is a super nice ask - thank you for the complements! Seriously, this made my day. 

Getting on to the ask… there’s a lot of questions in here so I’m going to tackle them one at a time. 

1a- Clarke’s immediate survival.

There’s two pieces to the puzzle here on how Clarke survived the death wave. 

The first piece of this survival puzzle is the people-melting energy levels of the death wave. This is why it was vital that Clarke make it inside. 

Being inside and underground is the best place you can be. This is illustrated in the image below.

We know from canon it has at least one shield to protect the lab from the rocket. It is highly likely that there are additional shields surrounding the rest of the lab. This would be to both protect the lab from a rocket launch, but also for containment breaches resulting from the research in the lab. This insulation would protect Clarke from the energy of the blast. 

The next piece is about Clarke surviving the increased toxicity from the radiation associated with the nuclear plant meltdowns and the death wave.

We have to conclude that the nightblood solution worked – this is eluded to when Clarke greets Madi (someone clearly born prior to the death wave) by calling her a nightblood. Nightblood is what they have in common and likely let them both live. 

Nightbloods have a higher tolerance for toxicity caused by acute radiation. This was proven earlier in the season when Luna showed up with Floukru after ingesting fish that had been exposed to the increased radiation. Luna was able to recover from the acute radiation sickness when the rest of Floukru did not. 

It seems that Clarke had a similar but worse reaction from her exposure to the oncoming death wave. Clarke had much higher level of radiation toxicity to deal with - hence the severe and rapid symptoms - but eventually was able to heal once she was removed from that acutely toxic environment.

1b- Clarke’s prolonged survival and how to find food/water.

For water, I strongly believe Clarke had one of two options.

Access to a fresh water aquifer through a well. For this source to still be viable after the death wave it must also be true that there was minimal or inconsequential earthquake-like activity. Creating such a well would require drilling deep down into the ground to an aquifer that the ocean had not infiltrated. By pulling from a source deep underground the numerous meters of earth capping the aquifer would ensure that the radiation of the death wave would not impact the water. This option is also viable regardless of whether or not the lab has power.

A functioning water recycler. Given Becca’s work was funded on the premise that humanity was outgrowing it’s limits, you could make a case that Becca’s lab had to prove they too could live off of recycled water. We also know from the finale that Becca’s equipment was very similar to that on the Ark (Monty mentioned it when they went to grab the oxygenator). Additionally, it might have been with the increased activity in space that at-home or at-work recycled water was common and economically feasible.

There are of course other ways Becca’s lab could have received their water (e.g. desalinated ocean water), but we need a scenario where the water Clarke is drinking hasn’t been impacted by the radiation. Unless there is a really intense and self-cleaning water treatment system in Becca’s lab, I believe either of the two options above could work.

Food - I must admit I am not sure what Clarke would be able to find to eat. I really think the plot is what is going to make a decision here.

For example, the Writers could decide that some food was left behind because it’s weight to nutritional value ratio wasn’t high enough. This would get Clarke through the first year with some severe rationing.

I find the question of “what to do about food?” to be most challenging to figure out a realistic scenario. 

Clarke has guns in the finale, which implies she has been hunting (it seems there are no other humans around). But my first piece of advice to anyone going into a place with high toxicity would be to not eat anything high up on the food chain. The higher up you go, the more radiation has been accumulated by radiation exposed beings eating other radiation exposed beings.

Perhaps Clarke’s nightblood will save her again — despite the established precedent that eating radiation exposed fish would make you severely sick.

Now there are two other possible scientific options for Clarke to acquire food:

1. Clarke has become a forager and is eating irradiated food. This would mean that by complete happy coincidence the death wave was releasing energy waves at such a level that it was able to kill off any bacteria growth - but not so intense that it influenced the nuclei of the food to become radioactive. Given the unplanned nature of the death wave this seems far-fetched to me.

2. Clarke was able to wait for new plant growth. There are some plants that need fires for germination of their seeds. (Source if you don’t believe me: http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/yosemite-sequoias-fire ). These plants are highly resistant to fire… but not completely. Given Bellamy looked down to an Earth that was completely on fire (you couldn’t even see the oceans!) this also seems unlikely. 

I firmly believe the plot will save Clarke here. 

2- Survival of Becca’s lab

I’m not too worried about Becca’s lab.

Becca’s lab is primarily located underground. We’ve seen in the credits of the show and in other areas that it’s really only an entryway that is above ground - and there must be at least one other blast door that opens to let the rocket leave. 

As I mentioned above - my headcannon is that the blast door to the rocket wasn’t the only blast-proof wall attached to Becca’s lab.

I’d back this headcannon up by referencing the most under-rated hilarious moment of the finale – Becca’s lab staff overdoing it on health and safety protocols at the antenna thereby forcing Clarke to be unsafely left behind (good grief THE IRONY!). As mentioned before, planning to mitigate the effect of a rocket blasting off on top of your laboratory will require planning and blast shields.

But the writers may decide something different.

No matter what, the only piece of the building above ground was the entryway - which if it collapsed or was consumed by fire wouldn’t be too big of a deal. Given its relative size to the rest of the structure it is unlikely it would do much additional damage. 

3 - how did the rover survive?

It shouldn’t have.

For contrast, let’s compare this with a real life scenario.

In 2016 a huge wild fire happened in and around Fort McMurray, Canada. Over 75,000 people were evacuated from this city as a wall of fire descended and cut off the only highway to leave. Thankfully due to a culture of safety and good planning - no one died from the fire.

Fires, like the one we saw in the death wave both consume and cook what lays before them. If the rover wasn’t chewed up by the fire, the heat from it should have melted its systems within it that would allow it to function.

Some far-fetched reasons the Rover could have survived:

The writers could say that for ~*~reasons~*~ the rover was surrounded in something that protected it from the initial blast and the prolonged flames.

Perhaps it was parked in a garage that was underground before they got on the boat to the island. Given we never saw an underground garbage by the ocean this would be a very convenient after the fact consideration. Also I doubt the delinquents would have nicely put the car away when they had planned to leave it behind for five+ years.

Or perhaps since the delinquents knew they weren’t going to see the rover again, in a last moment of childish end-of-world shenanigans they joy-rided it into the ocean. The ocean water then would have protected it from some of the heat and fire. Now Clarke would have a mostly intact Rover to deal with… but  even still I feel like this would be beyond her ability to repair. 

Maybe the rover we saw in the finale isn’t our rover, just one that looks incredibly similar. 

4- only five years for radiation to go down considerably

Wild speculation:

Perhaps it took six years and that is why the delinquents haven’t returned to Earth. 

Or maybe, in a throw back to the pilot, the penal colony ship will open the door and the air will be too toxic this time. Could you imagine? We get a season premiere where we see two characters bickering “what if the air is toxic?” “then we’re all dead anyways” and they actually die. This would be followed by me as the audience ACTUALLY DYING. 

Wild speculation aside, I agree - this is a problem. Especially in contrast to the visuals we see at the end of the finale. Seeing the entire world on fire - EVEN THE OCEANS - makes it seem that the world is done and gone forever.

( Look at this - there are BURNING AREAS, not just clouds, EVERYWHERE. And that’s before you consider the giant dramatic plumes of spinning green-hot energy launching into the air.)

Everything we know about the death wave hints at the fact that the Earth is dead. 

For instance, why was the death wave speeding up? What was providing new energy to the death wave to allow it to do this? 

But for me the biggest hole of all is the fact that our burning planet would leave no oxygen behind for our heroes to live. Certainly not for Madi at any rate, who we can not possibly believe was in some sort of air-tight bunker. Madi and likely Clarke should be dead from Carbon Monoxide poisoning.

 And look at these dense clouds of smoke — how on earth (literally) is a plant supposed to grow without access to sunlight? 

… I probably shouldn’t be adding questions to my own ask…

But quite frankly, the impacts of the nuclear plant meltdowns as portrayed in the show just do not fit in the hard end of Mohs Scale of Science Fiction. 

I’m sure the writers will tell us something about how the half-life of the radiation will come down quickly thanks to some sort of 22nd Century invention. But for what we understand at the moment, the death wave and its impacts are a bit beyond reasonable. 

Or at least that’s my response - I’d love to hear otherwise from someone who specializes in physics. Perhaps there is something I am not considering here, such as the energy caused by cascading breakdowns of molecules and what that means as they coalesce later. 

Anyways… I hope this helps. I’m personally putting most of the death wave’s physical properties in a box of “Sci-Fi Fun”. The rest is much more reasonable to consider.

what sustainability means to me + my goals

I’ve been racking my brains this past week on what would be the best flow for this blog. I initially wanted to dive into narrower topics of personal progress tracking (i.e. sustainable fitness habits/eating habits/fashion) but decided that starting broad would be the way to go 

today, I’ve decided to tackle what ‘sustainability’ means to me and what are some goals I have in mind towards achieving a sustainable lifestyle. realistically, it would take me years to reach these targets but I think that’s precisely what life is for right? for continual growth and learning! and so I will try my best to list my long term goals and smaller ‘check-points’ that would enable me to transit from my current lifestyle to my desired way of living (: 

sustainability means...

the most broad and basic of sustainability, as taken from cambridge dictionary, goes

“the quality of being able to continue over a period of time” 

in terms of including the idea of environment, the definition extends to: 

“the quality of causing little or no damage to the environment and therefore able to continue for a long time” 

while doing a brief search on other more environment-centric websites, I cam across this excerpt by environmentalscience.org 

“In short, sustainability looks to protect our natural environment, human and ecological health, while driving innovation and not compromising our way of life.”

and decided that it sums up my ideals and goals pretty well and as such, I shall attempt to mould my goals following this definition as a framework of sorts! additionally, I want to factor in an element of financial sustainability as well. as a student who has no active income, money is an issue that can’t be ignored when it comes to shaping my lifestyle choices. yet I strongly believe that a sustainable lifestyle (in terms of eco-friendliness) should not be limited to those belonging to higher income groups and that it should not deter me from trying to pursue these hopes of protecting the planet to the best of my ability! so I’m really going to try my best to be honest yet realistic on my journey and I hope it’s an encouragement to you too (: 

my goals

1. physical wellbeing - diet 

past (up until mid-2019)  - ate and snacked on whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted 

present  - cut down on sugared beverages, beer (since mid-2019)  - started intermittent fasting (since june 2020) 

long-term goal - eat largely plant based (or if eating insects as a sustainable food source becomes a thing then that’ll be included HAHAHA)  - three meals a day  - enjoying snacking/desserts once a week/no snacking or desserts at all 

check-points - slowly dedicating meat-free meals/days to adjust to more plant-based dishes  - designating a cut off timing for eating everyday (9/10pm)  - meal prepping in advance for certain meals 

2. physical wellbeing - exercise 

past (up until mid-2019)  - legit just no exercise at all HAHAHA 

present  - start going for hikes more regularly (since early-2020 but I kinda stopped during circuit breaker...)  - exercise for at least 30 min, 5 times a week (since may 2020)  - stretch for at least 15 min, 3 times a week (since june 2020)

future  - exercise for at least 30 min, 3-4 times a week  - stretch for at least 15 min, 3 times a week 

3. consumer habits 

past  - just buy whatever I wanted and whenever I wanted 

present  - more conscious in deciding whether something is a want or need  - more conscious in thinking about the longevity of product (whether I would use it regularly/for as many years as possible)  - more conscious in buying products made ethically/with eco-conscious materials/promote eco sustainability 

future  - cut down purchasing first-hand wearables (except undergarments lol) and look into buying more products second-hand - pick up sewing so I can alter my own clothes that no longer fit/second-hand clothing  - when purchasing first-hand goods, look to investing in eco-conscious, higher quality products so that they can last longer leading to less waste 

check-ponts - refrain from impulsive buying  - continue to educate myself on stores which offer sustainable products/local businesses to support  - look through currently owned goods to determine what are necessities and wants and thus what I can live without 

4. other zero waste habits  - waste: compost food waste and other biodegradable goods / cut down completely on single-use goods when possible (I’m not too sure on how that’ll work with toilet/tissue paper...any ideas?)  - transport: take public transport as much as possible  - aircon: learn to sleep without aircon at least half the time 

why sustainability 

I think a lot of these goals listed above demand further elaboration so yes, it will come in time in the form of separate blog posts! as mentioned before, I want to be more intentional in pursuing these new habits so I think proper research is key! while the process may take many years...I’ve decided not to put it off any longer. I have always felt this love for the earth and desire to do better in terms of environmentalism. there isn’t an excuse as to why I haven’t done it sooner (although if I had to pinpoint a reason, I think I’ve been swept up in the consumerist culture and have grown to rely on the path of greatest convenience) but something that has propelled me to start this during this time has been my weekly viewings of seven worlds one planet by BBC. 

narrated by the most venerable david attenborough, each episode features a continent and several species of animal that inhabit that geographical area. it is a BEAUTIFUL show! the cinematography is amazing. I assure you, you’d spend half the time going “how did they even film that?!” anyway, besides the amazing new animals you’ll meet, another common theme that runs through each ep is of how these animals’ lives have been drastically altered due to climate change. in some situations, the damage is beyond repair. in others, attenborough shares that a glimmer of hope still exists BUT we have to put our foot down and start actively making change now. additionally, about a month back, my prof had assigned us a final assignment in place of the exam. we were given 5 articles centred around climate change and had to critically examine this issue through the perspectives of marx, durkheim and weber. it was an extremely enlightening assignment and at the same time, it left my heart feeling very heavy. is there anything I can do that will make a difference? is my seemingly singular effort enough? is this all in vain? but I’ve decided...I must still do my best, and so the journey continues! going to focus on finding useful resources to repost here too! for myself, and whoever else may come across this little journal hehe

The second reason is it's common knowledge that the best Universities in the U.S. are private schools such as Duke, Stanford, and the Ivy League. These universities fill most of the highest paying jobs in the country. Some jobs even go as far as to require a degree from one of these schools (Stock Brokers on NYC Stock Exchange.) These highly paid graduates can donate larger amounts of money back to their respective colleges than the average Joe who graduated from a generic state funded university. No one is going to donate money to the private insurance companies. We can't even get all the people who qualify for insurance to sign up and that's the problem! Look, I have no way of knowing whether the public option will work or won't but when faulty logic is used to support it I become concerned. When most of the people supporting the public option are from California (a state where the middle class is few and far between) I become more concerned. When most of the Senators and Representatives who support the public option say they would prefer the U.S. had a single payer system (that's total government control of health care if you didn't know) I become very concerned. The reality is no one knows what the effects of public option will be. Also, the success of FedEx is not any proof that public option won't hurt private companies because an independent council regulates the mail industry.
