Grinding my teeth - a Dark Souls 2 Journal - Chapter 4
After the Pursuer and as the giant bird flies me to the Lost Bastille (not a sentence I thought I’d ever write!), I feel a sense of elation and excitement, a feeling I carry with me as I begin to explore this new area. I go slow and steady, feeling good about my choices until I walk into a room and am immediately swarmed by Royal Swordsmen and killed.
After that particularly grounding experience, I explore a little further until I accidentally find the boss, who promptly flattens me. I decide that this may be a place best explored at a later date.
Not leaving me many options, I go back to Heides Tower of Flame. But after the Pursuer, I have a new found confidence in taking on larger enemies. I watch these knights, I learn their attacks, I test weapons and work my way through them, and before I know it, I’m at the next boss, The Dragonrider. He’s got more reach, but is much slower. It gets a bit close, but he’s dies on my first attempt. This the leads onto the next area, the Huntsman’s Copse, which is significantly more approachable than The Lost Bastille, and I get to exploring.
Initially upon starting this game, I really wanted to do it completely blind, but in truth I can’t spend my entire life trying to figure this game out; I’m gonna need some guidance. So I go to the wiki, and some forums to look up some information; firstly, I notice how rude and derogatory a fair amount of the comments are. One in particular had someone scoffing that a player struggling with Dark Souls 2 must have only played A HUNDRED AND TWENTY HOURS, explaining their lack of success. 120 hours, I’ll be lucky if I manage to play half that much in a year! I’m a working man, a husband, a father, life is busy, I can’t sink that sort of time into this! I worry moreover about the undercurrent of some of these comments, that seem unnecessarily elitist and unfriendly to newcomers. Now not all were, and I’m sure that the majority of the Dark Souls community is lovely, but these few people have me pause for thought.
I need to speed this game up then. As I begin to look through the wikis, I noticed something odd- details that don’t line up, enemies that aren’t where they say they are, shortcuts that don’t exist. This is when I learn of two things; the SOTFS version of the game, and the post release updates. Now I only have the original game, and moreover as it’s on an Xbox 360, I am playing the 1.0 version of the game- no updates. Interesting.
And annoying. For example, in the newest version of the game, there is a shortcut to the boss that you can open in Dead Man’s Cove, but in the vanilla game? Yeah nah, you have to run the whole level first. I try the boss once, then find the whole thing so frustrating and leave it.
Returning to The Huntsman’s Copse, I continue to push forward. I really love how each level teaches new lessons, and has its own distinct flavour. This one has several new things: hidden rogues who try to ambush you, poison butterflies, and reviving skeletons. I manage to get to the main boss, the skeleton lord dudes. The lords themselves are weak and die quickly, but the sheer quantity of minions running around is difficult to manage. The pillars are helpful for kiting them around, thinning their ranks until none remain. And that’s it, boss beaten on the first go.
I light the first bonfire in Harvest Valley, then return to Heides Tower of Flame. I know there’s another boss: the Dragonslayer. He’s fast, much faster than the Dragonrider, and he kills me several times. But I’ve upgraded by Broadsword, and it does good damage. Dark Souls 2 has taught me an important lesson: the best defence is to kill the enemy as quickly as possible. The longer a fight draws out, the greater the chance of being hit.
So I get aggressive with this boss, I get close, seize my openings, lob firebombs. It’s close, but after three attempts, I nail him.
Good stuff.

🚗🎷👮✋👊🛸🐌💌❤️💀🎪🎃🫵💍🧃🎭🌋🏥🏛️🧸🎵
To hell with it , do all of em (typing this out with red robin in mind but honestly pick whoever you want)
🚗 -who are they on a long car trip?
Robin is definitely the middle seat ADHD kid who brought uno to make his friends and himself go nuts
🎷-What is their go to song to make someone go insane?
Probably something like Michael Jackson's Scream or Bastille's Pompeii
👮- would they ever break the law? If so, what and why?
The only real crime Robin has committed was manslaughter, since he lived in a time where Shao Kahn ruled, he was killing Shaos men as something they did to him in the past.
🖐️- what would they do if they are asked to “shake my hand in character”
He'd jump into the air, doing a front flip and throw the dagger below himself, perfectly landing on the hilt and shaking their hand while slightly bending forward.
👊- who do they want to punch most?
Shao Kahn. (If he was still alive)
🛸- they have been abducted by aliens. What do they do?
He finds a way, any way possible to escape. He has escaped other terrible situations, so I'm sure there's nothing he can't get out of.
🐌- they are gifted a snail. What do they do with it?
Protect it with his life, as if it were his own child
💌- does anyone have a crush on them and need to send a love letter?
Its more like he has a massive crush and needs to send them a love letter.
♥️- I (the person asking/one of my OCs) has a crush on them. How do they feel about that?
He'd probably be a little awkward about it, but explain he'll say he's for spoken but open to a friendship.
💀- Who’s skeleton is in their closet?
No one's. Not that you'd know of, that is
🎪- what job would they have at a circus?
A clown or one of them knife thrower guy's who tosses knives at a guy who's tied to a wooden wheel
🎃- go to Halloween costume?
Deadpool. No second thought, he's Deadpool
🫵- IF you met them IRL what would you do? what do they say to you?
I would give him a free therapy session and there's a 50/50 chance he will give me a hug or stab the shit out of me.
💍- how would they propose?
Like this
Tumblr media
🧃- do they drink apple juice? (That’s not a metaphor for anything i just mean normal Apple juice)
On a chair, crosslegged and with one hand on his head
🎭- what’s their dream musical role? (If you don’t know musicals pick a movie role)
Dream musical role would probably be in a rock band as the vocals.
🌋- quick they have to save a town from an erupting volcano what do they do?
Pick up the people closest to him and gtfo of there ASAP
🏥- how do they act when their hurt/sick?
He would probably brush it off. Even though he can barely move, he tries his best to keep the people around him happy.
🧸- do they have a special plushie?
No. But you're giving me an idea.
🎵- what song would they play on repeat?
K'naan's Bang Bang. It's like his favorite song of all time.
📣- 🎶TURN AROUND🎶… (wrong answers only)
And pop, lock and drop.
Also thanks for the asks, I've been waiting so long for someone to ask me about my kiddies

annco shuffle your favorite playlist and post the first five songs that come up, then copy/paste this ask to your favorite mutuals :3
hi lamb!!! thank u for the ask!! I’m shuffling a playlist called “The Real Stuff 2.0” which is basically a collection of every song I’ve enjoyed since 8th grade . I’m not responsible if something I liked when I was 13 comes up ok
1) Pompeii by Bastille
2) Someone To You by BANNERS
3) Brazil by Declan McKenna
4) The Gambler by fun.
5) Twin Skeleton’s (Hotel In NYC) by Fall Out Boy
the lack of Måneskin or Hozier from this list is truly incredibly saddening

enough of this 'in as few words as possible' I want the entire history of how your music taste got where it is; i'll start.
so anyway I wasn't allowed to listen to anything besides gospel music (and even then only certain types) till I was like 11-ish. Despite that I was allowed to listen to disney music, so when I was 8 and heard Immortals by imagine dragons in big hero six I lost it. I listened to that song constantly it was always playing. Anyway, 11 year old me found out about the music app having a search bar, i had only ever been allowed to listen to things my dad had predownloaded into the library. So I found fall out boy, and imagine dragons and for months listened to nothing but them. Just me sitting in my room at midnight feeling like i was breaking rules listening to Sugar we're going down and radioactive. Then i found Bastille and 21 Pilots through finding the recommendations tab and then eventually MCR; and the Avril Lavigne And then uh, yeah my music kinda stayed there, it was mainstream pop-kinda-sorta-punk. But it was clean, i literally would not listen to a song that had a single bad word in it bc I don't say those words i'm a good kid. I listened to teenagers through a youtube clean cover like, i was so careful.
Anyway, my mother, the most awesome person i know and i'm not even joking I love her so much. Took me to Hella Mega Tour for my birthday bc I found out fall out boy was going to be there and convinced myself I was going to DIE if i did not see them live.
(Note my mom was 14 when green day got popular, she reasonably could have been listening to them as a teenager. Except that same year my moms parents joined the cult we were in and she was forbidden from listening to that type of music.)
back on topic, fall out boy finished I was PUMPED, i also had school the next morning and it was already getting late. So my mom told me "I've heard of this next band, but I don't really know any of their songs we can leave now if you want" I decided to stay, just to hear the first 2-3 songs and see if i had any interest, they started with American Idiot and halfway through the song it was decided the only way to get me out of that stadium while they were still playing would be kicking and screaming. Billie Joe Armstrong changed the trajectory of my life completely that night and he doesn't even know it.
after that it just kinda? spiraled? Royal & the serpent got me with hearing overwhelmed, Alkaline Trio with Calling All Skeletons, I started listening to Teenagers uncensored ik so scandalous. I found Grandson bc of a norway cosplay tiktok that used Blood//Water (no i'm not joking); and Sabaton bc of a hetalia fic about the winged hussars. My friend introduced me to Des Rocs recently, another friend Sueco, i don't actually remember how i found Ghost :\ And Daisy Grenade opened at the fall out boy concert I went to a few months ago and I love them now <3
And then i stumbled head first into folk punk due to a pinterest comment that referenced Ramshackle Glory, AJJ, Bitch & Animal, Mischief Brew my beloved. Folk punk is my moms least favorite genre i've gotten into. Then a guy told me if i like folk punk to check out Petey and now my favorite song like scream in the car after a bad day song is Pitch A Fit, it's so good man.
but anyway Fall Out Boy is still my favorite band bc they were the first band I ever listened to.

VERSE ; HIGH VALUE CURRENCY (red dead redemption)
saint denis, a city of opportunity and corruption, is where the recently widowed lynn langermann makes her home. her husband, blake, was killed when a lone robber broke into the langermann home and stole a small supply of cash. blake tried to intervene and took a bullet to his stomach. lynn, distraught and crying out for her husband, took the gun off the wall and shot the thief as he tore out of the door. he was dead before he hit the ground. but blake could not be saved.
after he was buried, lynn worked to try and keep the home they'd built just north of saint denis. she waited on tables at the bastille saloon, scraping together tips to pay the bank so she would not lose her home. here, among the wealthy and well connected, she overheard secrets. talk meant for behind closed doors - nothing a simple waitress would care about. but those secrets meant everything when the bank took her home away, claiming someone else had an interest in the land and a woman could not maintain it on her own. lynn took what little she had and found an old apartment in saint denis, continuing her work to serve tables and over the next few years built up a business of her own.
for the right price, lynn langermann can provide information, the skeletons in the closets of the most well connected and corrupt of saint denis.

The reason that Skulls is my all time fav song (not just Bastille songs but any song) is because of its theme.
The idea of two people that care about each other and stay together even after death or the loss of others, even if they annoy each other sometimes. That they truly love each other and not even death ends that. Kinda like those skeletons that are resting together in graves.
Also it sounds cool lol

full speed ahead (listen/download)
an argo ii playlist - the heroes of olympus - arranged by ducksbellorum
full speed ahead - epic the musical Every great quest aboard a magitechnical Greek warship deserves an equally great playlist, or at least that's what Leo tells everyone when he asks for their song choices. Six hundred men, six hundred miles of open sea But the problem's not the distance It's what lies in between
this is sparta !!! - sammy & lesen Obviously this was one of Leo's contributions; the bass gets him hype and the fact that he's bumping Spartan jams on a Greek warship just tickles him. Spartans, What is your profession? Spartans, Prepare for glory!
vode an - samuel kim Jason added this to the playlist; he doesn't know a lot of 'modern' music, but this track reminds him of Roman war chants and gets him going. Kandosii sa ka'rta, Vode an. Coruscanta a'den mhi, Vode an. Bal kote, darasuum kote, Jorso'ran kando a tome.
seven nation army - the white stripes Percy Jackson was tempted to add a joke track, but knowing Leo there would be plenty and besides, why not add something he actually wants to listen to? Everyone knows about it From the Queen of England to the Hounds of Hell And if I catch it comin' back my way, I'm gonna serve it to you And that ain't what you want to hear, but that's what I'll do
yereyira - papito & iba one Piper spent a lot of her life around spoiled pop musicians and their kids, so her music tastes tend toward the most obscure artists possible on purpose. Pa-pa-pa-pa-papito I-i-i-i-iba one Papito, Iba One Iba One, Papito!
shake it off - taylor swift There is in fact a Swiftie aboard the Argo II and it's Frank Zhang; he's a little bashful about it but that doesn't stop him from adding it to the playlist. I'm dancin' on my own I make the moves up as I go And that's what they don't know, That's what they don't know
over the rainbow - judy garland Like Jason, Hazel also doesn't know much modern music, but that doesn't hold her back from getting Leo to add one of her favorites to the crew's mix. Somewhere over the rainbow Skies are blue And the dreams that you dare to dream Really do come true
laughter lines - bastille This is Annabeth's pull; most of her music is lyricless for better concentration, but occasionally she veers into bittersweet indie pop, like this. "I'll see you in the future when we're older And we are full of stories to be told Cross my heart and hope to die I'll see you with your laughter lines"
sea shanty medley - home free If you don't think that the crew did some shanty singing on their journey, you're probably right but that won't stop me from hoping they did. She's a fast clipper ship and a bully good crew Away Santiana And an old salty yank for a captain too Along the plains of Mexico
bonus: spooky scary skeletons (remix) - andrew gold "Hey Nico, you want to add a song to the quest playlist?" "No." "Are you suuuuure?" "Yes." "I'll just add one for you, then, shall I?" "VALDEZ!" We're so sorry skeletons, you're so misunderstood You only want to socialize (But I don't think we should)
