hello tumblr user tripod-fish! your icon contains a Tripod Fish (Bathypterois grallator), a somewhat-sessile, mostly-blind deep-sea fish using its long, bony extensions to stand in the deep-sea currents and catch little crustaceans and whatever else might come its way.
earth fact time. tripod fish are deep-sea fish that live in the midnight and abyssal zones. another asexual legend! they're hemaphrodites, which means they have both male and female reproductive organs, which means they can still reproduce even if they can't find a mate - which is pretty often in the deep sea. they literally just self-fertilize.
also they sort of just... walk on their fins. i think that's really funny.
A stunning baby rainbow tripod fish off Cozumel Mexico. 🌈
Like many deep-sea creatures, tripod fish live near the surface when young, taking advantage of the warm nutrient rich waters and looking a lot like colorful jellyfish.
ANGLEFISH, TELESKEYE & ASTROLAZE (Water/Psychic) The stargazing pokemon
This family of fish pokemon have gained psychic powers after spending their whole lives gazing at the stars, basking in their cosmic energy, opening their minds to the powers of the universe. They know the movement of the stars up to hundres of years into the future and navigate around the seas following the star charts imprinted in their mind.
ANGLEFISH (Angelfish/Angle) is based on the juvenile of the Orbicular Batfish (Platax orbicularis) and a Sextant, a navigational instrument used for determining the angle between the horizon and a celestial body such as the Sun, the Moon, or a star, used in celestial navigation to determine latitude and longitude
TELESKEYE (Telescope/Eye/Sky) is based on the Tripod Fish (Bathypterois grallator) and a Nautical Telescope with its tripod
ASTROLAZE (Astrolabe/Gaze) is based on the Stargazers, a family of fish (Uranoscopidae) with eyes on top of their heads and an Astrolabe, an ancient astronomical instrument that was a handheld model of the universe used to help determine the ship's latitude from the height of the Pole Star or of the sun
In ASTROLAZE's back there are 3 markings, these markings actually represent 3 different constellations, this are Pisces (The Fishes), Sextans (The Sextant) and Telescopium (The Telescope), making them references the line inspiration in stars and to its previous forms
Alien tripods from movies. The inhabitants of the seabed meet tripods in real life! In the pitch darkness of the deep sea, the amazing tripod fish Bathypterois grallator thrives. This species lives in tropical and subtropical waters at depths from 878 to 4720 meters. The tripod fish got its name due to its characteristic pose. It is located on the ocean floor, facing upstream, with its mouth open and pectoral fins extended forward. This unique position allows the fish to detect approaching prey and guide it directly into its mouth using its sensitive fins. (The sounds are made by whales.)
One I finish this I’ll probably put it on Artfight
(Image ID: A painted sketch of an unconventional mermaid. They have a cage over their face. Their skin is pale. They have giant pectoral fins turned into arms and hands, and a smaller set of humanoid pelvic fins that have lost their webbing and are used for emoting. The lower portion of their body is covered in small prolegs, much like a tardigrade or caterpillar. The reference image, an image of a cave angelfish from a worm’s eye view, is on the left. End ID)
Aw man I know NOTHING about deep-sea creatures I'm so excited to research this
Giant Isopod (Bathynomus giganteus)
Yet another example of an animal that I REALLY want to keep as if they're a dog. These guys are crustaceans, just like crabs and terrestrial pill bugs. This leads me to wonder how they would taste...
Bloodybelly Comb Jelly (Lampocteis cruentiventer)
Very sparkly comb rows (the rows of little nubbins going from its tip to its tail), this little fella is quite the fashionista! I found a beautiful video showing them off. Unfortunately for this creature, I do want to throw it against the wall like the Hannah Montana Milk Pillow just to see what happens.
Viperfish (Chauliodus)
I've seen a preserved specimen in a museum before, these guys are RIDICULOUSLY long! Apparently its teeth are Too Big For He Gotdamn Head, so its lower jaw juts outward to compensate. I respect this creature but it does scare me. Like, a lot.
Tripod Fish (Bathypterois grallator)
Wow. They weren't lying. This guy is a tripod alright.
Praya dubia (fig. G)
Spaghetti.
This creature (and all other creatures in this image) is a siphonophore. Though they look like singular creatures, they're all colonies of many, tiny zooids strung together!
