final thoughts on aitsf ending under the cut, ovbs major spoilers for every route

Preface: overall I really LOVED the whole game, it was exactly the sort of BRILLIANT brain screw I’ve come to expect from Uchikoshi’s work. The way all the pieces really clicked into place was amazing, and I LOVED the deep, deep unsettling horror brought up by seeing Saito in the body you’ve come to know as Date, and the sense of wrongness the bodyswaps carried. It was such an interesting feeling of horror. And of course I do like the true ending, as it’s OBJECTIVELY the best. The least characters dead, the threat taken care of for good, everything tied up with a neat bow. Date gets his original life back and almost everyone gets a Good Happy End

Except

 They really did specifically shaft my two favorite characters. Pretty much everyone else got a nice little happy end, but then there’s Mizuki and Pewter.

Like yeah, Mizuki got to keep her best friend, but at what cost? Being neglected by the one adult she should be able to trust? Being all but written out of the narrative and out of Date’s heart? Mizuki should have been acknowledged as a main heroine in the end (bc for Left Route?? she WAS the main heroine. how tf are you gonna have her be the main heroine for half the game and then say she’s not as important as the other main heroine from the other half??) and gotten to ride around for goodbyes with Iris and Date. And her final convo shouldn’t have been “you and I live together but we never talk, we don’t really understand each other, and you being my legal dad doesn’t mean shit,” especially since in right route?? she really WAS neglected by him. Multiple characters point out that he’s neglecting her and not there when she needs him. And yet this is the good ending?

I also really hate how Iris gets treated as his canon daughter (pretty much replacing Mizuki) and how the beautiful, heart-wrenching Mizuki end never happens in the true route. There’s implications of the parallel universe thing, and Date remembering parts of other timelines, but I still think that she and him should have bonded more on-screen in right route. It’d have been nice if we got that closeness again and there was more emphasis on how the FOUR of them are a family now.  I’ve been reading a ton of good fix-it fic that explores how maybe we can still have both. Honestly, it could have been a BEAUTIFUL ending for Mizuki about finding a family she truly belongs in-- a kind mother, a father who cares about her, and a best friend big sister. but instead she gets shafted. Orphaned, shot, and if the line about “we never talk” is to be believed, neglected in favor of Iris. Honestly, that really soured Iris’s whole character for me. I think I’d like her more too if I wasn’t resenting her for getting all the love that Mizuki never got to have. Iris gets to keep her mom and gets “uncle” back, Mizuki gets left out in the cold. Even if Date remembers being close with her, it’s not the same if the narrative doesn’t show that closeness existing in the true route. Remembering a good relationship is much, much different than actually having one. 

(the one saving grace is that Uchikoshi did say on twitter that they might get that closeness back post canon. I asked him and he said “maybe yes” so it’s not impossible ;-;)

and Pewter. Oh Pewter. I wish Pewter was slightly more sympathetically treated, bc again, in Left Route, he was 100% a good guy, and t b h in right route his reasons were SO understandable. I’d be confused and make bad choices too if my dearest person was injured and desperate and scared, especially if you add that Saito is a master manipulator to the mix. Their relationship had been going on for years prior, and Saito was doing such a good imitation of Renju, that I’m sure he was also confused!! bc HIS Renju wouldn’t have done those things!! I also don’t buy that he was trying to kill Date, bc if he was, there would have been a thousand easier ways of doing it. “oooh nooo, something went wrong in the psynch when he was left completely vulnerable. Oooooh noooo, Aiba malfunctioned and fried his brain. Ooooh no, the dosage for his medication got accidentally tampered with and made him sick.” like why do we just BELIEVE Saito when they say he wanted Date dead?????? I can’t buy it. I can’t buy that someone who has been a good friend to Date since before he even became Date and someone who was shown to be so dedicated for more than half of the game would do that. 

he didn’t deserve to be treated like a 100% bad dude. As if Date and Boss don’t know a thing or two about doing bad things for the people they love. Objectively the things both of them did were worse than what he did, but bc the things he did fucked over the protag specifically they were seen as worse :/ like he DID fuck up!! I’m not saying Pewter never did anything wrong, but he didn’t deserve to be pretty much entirely written out.

he at least deserved a little more sympathy, even if he still had to face the music for his crimes. at least let him be in the dance :( if Hitomi can be unparalyzed for the dance and have it written off as “it’s fantasy, don’t worry about it” then Pewter should have been allowed to participate too. He’s been so dedicated and helpful to Date for YEARS before this, it’s such a shame that it was all swept away, even if he DID fuck up. 

He lost literally everything in the course of a week, and it’s an absolute tragedy. I can’t accept that the ending is happy when that happens. He lost his love, his job, his friends, his freedom, everything. And he didn’t deserve any of it, let alone to be treated like nothing more than a crooked criminal on top of it. (By Date, at least. The narrative does give him some sympathy overall I think. But he really gets none from Date. And while that's UNDERSTANDABLE, since Date is still upset about Aiba, it would have been nice if the player got more positive closure w him. His final scene was so brief and Date was so hostile.)

anyway fixit fics are my life blood rn bc that ending is so bittersweet :( Pewter and Mizuki both deserve the world. Mizuki end canon in my heart. I would have liked if Mizuki end could have been part of the true end somehow-- still saving So and Iris, of course, but still considered part of the main timeline.

okay okay so. current wips include:

aftermath: one shots

- one that’s set during season 4, after barry gets framed for devoe’s murder and gets sent to iron heights. len is like ‘there’s no way you’ll survive prison without me, for fuck’s sake barry, i’m coming in after you’ and basically he deliberately gets locked up alongside him. they share a cell, it’s great. basically just an excuse for prison smut, honestly. this one’s like 70% drafted and won’t need many edits, but probably won’t post until i have ALSO written:

- the second aftermath one-shot, based on 4x01 when barry comes out of the speedforce with a scrambled brain from experiencing his whole life on loop for months. the angst!! i need it!! i’m gonna write this one first bc it makes no sense to post a one-shot from mid s4 and then go back to the first episode, so. i have pretty clear plans for this one, it’ll be a little longer, but gonna try and keep it fairly tight, preferably no more than 10k. (you: helen, that’s not tight. me: IT’S TIGHT BY MY STANDARDS, LEAVE ME ALONE.)

- i’ll probably do more of these one shots as things come to me, i know people wanted me to do the whole zoom-breaking-barry’s-spine ep and len’s reaction, but honestly i am not emotionally equipped to rewatch that ep any time soon, so it’s on the list but when i’ll get to it, who knows

aftermath: sequel (michael snart)

- because over 500,000 words of content wasn’t enough for me, apparently!! len and barry’s son comes back from the future to save barry from an unknown crisis and inadvertently brings crisis with him. this is the fanfic equivalent of a strongly worded letter to the flash writers bc crisis sucked so i decided to do it my own way. current word count: 32k, aiming for around 50k. maybe 60k but please GOD no more than that. features len being a bad father but trying not to be, lots of teen angst, and dual timelines, cos i hate myself apparently.

vegas wedding one shot

- i wrote a terrible first draft of this for camp nanowrimo a few years back, revisited it during the march lockdown, rewrote about 80% of it and then... stopped. but im gonna finish it, i swear, cos i really love this one. in a nutshell, barry and len get whammied by a meta who convinces them that they’re in love and they have to get married Right Now, Actually. they run off to vegas, team flash has to chase them across the strip and try and stop them from getting hitched. super chaotic, around 20k. this one’s high priority cos it is SO close to done that i have no excuse.

coldwestallen hades/persephone fic

- hoo boy, strap yourselves in cos this one is gonna be a Long Boi. i responded to the feeling of emptiness that came with finishing one hellishly long fic by diving headfirst into another, because that’s healthy. very loosely inspired by the hades/persephone myth, with persephone spending six months with hades in the underworld and six months with her family aboveground. barry makes a deal for len’s help in a sticky situation in exchange for six months working as a member of the rogues. it turns out better than expected, so they keep making the same trade off - six months with team flash, six months as a rogue, with lots of angst as barry struggles to reconcile two very different, entirely separate lives, and two very different loves. enemies to friends to lovers between barry and len, friends to lovers between barry and iris, enemies to lovers between len and iris, it’s a lot. super slow burn, split into four parts, which will each probably be around 50k. at least, that’s what i’m aiming for. it’s also gonna be kinda Problematic, there’ll be some infidelity which i know isn’t a lot of people’s jam, so there’s a strong chance no one will read it, but bold of you to assume im writing this for anyone but myself. im deeply in love with this thing. i reckon i have about 50k for this already and it’s my new baby. god, i love it. no idea when i’ll ever show it to anyone though. see you in a few years maybe lmaooo

other than that, this year had one big casualty that failed before it really got off the ground: the devil wears prada au. i watched DWP during lockdown, got obsessed for about two months, wrote 25k of an AU with len as miranda and barry as andy, and then suddenly lost all interest. tragic, cos i really like what i wrote for it, but i have so many wips that i can’t make myself cling to one that i know in my heart of hearts i’m not really invested in any more. now i really don’t know what to do with what i already have. i’m tempted to post it, in case anyone’s interested, but also don’t wanna get anyone’s hopes up or have anyone get attached to something i won’t ever finish. i might post the bits i have with a clear caveat that this is all there’ll ever be, idk, if anyone’s interested in that let me know. saves the time i spent on it from going to waste, i guess

ANYWAY that’s where i’m at with fics right now, there’s a lot going on, and this is JUST the fics im working on and not original stuff. hoo, boy. save me. we’ll see what happens in 2021, but i hope to at least finish all the one shots i mentioned, and preferably also finish michael’s fic as well! optimistic, maybe, but hey. manifest, and all that.

I do remember! And cliques in fandom can be tiring, I totally get you. Honestly, the way I deal with it is mostly to just talk with people I trust in DMs and share theories and thoughts there without worrying what people on the timeline are saying. I never go looking for subtweets or sub...posts about myself, I just try to face it head on if I happen to see something. 

If you just retweet and post what you like and focus on what makes you happy, people who are drawn to that energy will reach out and you’ll quickly know who you want to be friends with and who’s going to create drama for you.

Why does the West*llen fandom hate Harrison W*lls so much?

Ummm... I can’t speak for the fandom at large, but I don’t hate him. I think Tom’s a great actor and both Thawne and Harry were great characters, but I feel some resentment towards his character(s). Just because it’s so clear to me how he gets stuff that Cisco/Iris/Joe/etc. don’t get and will never get. Plus the reinvention of his character every season means he has to get a new introduction that takes up more time.

 But generally I enjoy him, if that makes sense, especially when he’s with Jesse. The moments that frustrate me are mostly when I see Cisco being treated as a prop for his storyline (like in S4). 

What do you think about fans saying CP is ruining her career for not going to the TCA? I saw that Zack Stentz had to jump in to defend her. My thoughts is people need to chill out over what CP does on her time off.

I didn’t see who said that, but TCA is definitely not making or breaking Candice’s career. She went the first year, they totally ignored her and didn’t show her category onscreen. I think she learned her lesson after that, which is that TCAs are utterly pointless unless your network has paid for you to win.

And in general you’re right, it’s none of our business how Candice handles her career. That’s literally her business.

Sorry to bring up the Grant drama again, but he is really trying my patience this week. I know this is far from the first time he's posted a photo from that godforsaken photo shoot with Tyler Shields. But after he's already aware A) how SB fans perceive him posting things like that, and B) how CP fans are upset with him right now + how CP fans feel about DP? I'm not sure what he's trying to accomplish anymore.

I’m going to examine this garden gate as Phoenix specifically to get this dialogue.

 I’m never getting over this like. Phoenix specifically imagining Miles “crying softly” and anticipating hugging. “I’M HERE TO HEAL UR PAIN EDGEWORTH”. Phoenix take it back a notch.

In we go to say hi to Miles who is still berating himself for passing out and Phoenix is like “oh my GOD why is it still bothering him” I FEEL YOU PHEEN.

 THEN MILES SEES HIM AND…literally runs away OH MY GOD MILES

Oh god…I never noticed it the first time around but it’s literally a repeat of the scene between them when Phoenix came into defend Miles at the detention center. That’s beautiful. THE MORE THINGS CHANGE, THE MORE THEY STAY THE SAME. Miles is still a disaster. I wonder if this still happens even in their 30s. I bet it does. Not just over earthquakes and going to jail. This is what happens when Miles tries to make an awesome banquet for their anniversary and ends up burning the food. This exact exchange.

Actually it may have happened when they were younger too considering the first time, Phoenix warned Maya not to actually laugh when he says this because “It’s a trick. He’ll get mad when you laugh. Or burst into tears.” So did baby Miles run away, have to be dragged back and then yell this when Phoenix tried to comfort him over not being able to do origami back in the day? And then did he try to laugh like Miles asked because he thought it would help and this is what triggered the outbreak of sobbing? IT’S PRETTY MUCH CONFIRMED THAT THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED. IN MY HEART.

Uhh Phoenix she literally wrote down that she did. That is was a wound in her soul that never healed or whatevs. Though I guess we don’t know if Mia wrote down the stuff Phoenix read. He could have just researched the case and all the narration we read was just Mia’s thoughts to herself rather than what she wrote down.

omg Miles. You know I always thought the whole “I’M WORRIED ABOUT THE DEFENSE TRAUMATIZING THIS CHILD” with Cody Hackins was just him being a dick as usual, but considering this dialogue it looks like that was genuine. 

Miles is very defensive of young children and paranoid about them being traumatized. That makes sense and is both adorable and sad.

Presenting Gumshoe means Miles mentions he took him out for pasta and Nick is like “WELL GOOD YOU OWE HIM THAT MUCH IT’S YOUR FAULT HIS SALARY IS SO LOW GIVE THE POOR GUY A RAISE JESUS.” 

Speaking the truth goddamn give it to him good Phoenix

I was thinking for a second investigation 2 causes a continuity error here bc he finally gives Gumshoe a raise in that but then I looked up the official Ace Attorney timeline that case takes place after this one.

All of Investigations takes place after this case and ends just before Phoenix gets disbarred (the last case of investigations 2 is literally 10 DAYS BEFORE IT HAPPENS…). Which makes sense bc if Miles had been gone for a year he wouldn’t have had time to be in spinoff games set in Japanifornia during that time. I have no idea why I thought investigations was set between game 2 and 3.

BUT I’M ALSO CONFUSED BECAUSE IF MILES HAS BEEN GONE FOR A YEAR HE CAN’T BE THE PERSON CUTTING GUMSHOE’S SALARY. Unless it was that way when he left and the new boss kept it the same. Either way, SHAME ON WHOEVER REPLACED MILES.

Miles have been going to trials in five different countries to learn how to be better at running them…and apparently learned all the languages.Phoenix is like “WHAT. HOW. IT’S TAKEN ME A LIFETIME TO SORT OF MASTER ONE LANGUAGE” I feel you Phoenix

If I try to show him evidence it’s all “I’m a prosecutor, I’m a defense attorney, we cannot discuss things so intimately” Miles he wasn’t asking to make out with you over the evidence, he genuinely wants your opinion.

Talking to Gumshoe, we find a bloody sword and Phoenix tells Gumshoe he doesn’t want to get it tested. Gumshoe realizes he’s terrified it’s Maya’s blood (and is going green at the thought). I FORGOT ABOUT THIS PART THIS IS SO SAD.

 Gumshoe reassures him and says she’s definitely okay and he’ll take him and Maya out for pasta when they find her. Awww Gumshoe I love ya. You really are better at knowing how to handle people’s feelings than anyone else in this bar. (And that being said, Phoenix should really tell him to go talk to Miles right now too. He is in need.).

Huh I forgot about this bit where Miles and Phoenix figure out how Dahlia is involved in all this together. I also completely forgot that Miles found out Dahlia was Phoenix’s ex and tried to kill him etc.

Phoenix mentions spirit channeling and Miles just flips out all like “SPIRIT CHANNELERS ARE FRAUDS THAT WOMAN ACCUSED AN INNOCENT MAN OF MURDER AND RUINED MY LIFE”

Did…he never figure out that it was his dad’s spirit who lied about the murder?APPARENTLY NOT.

and apparently he’s just willfully ignoring all those times Maya magically transformed into Mia RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM. Like I know you tend to be hyper-focused on Phoenix in court but I cannot believe you wouldn’t notice sometimes Maya is a foot taller and busting open her kimono. HOW DO YOU RATIONALIZE THIS TO YOURSELF? WHERE IS THE ~LOGIC~ MILES?

I guess “my dad accused an innocent man to protect me” would be a leap Miles would be unwilling to make because it goes against his image of his dad as champion of the ~Truth~. Not to mention it would be pretty horrible to know your dad’s spirit is out there thinking you were the one that killed him. Miles is going to have a hard time with dealing with that. Phoenix seems to realize this because he just kind of pauses for a second and is like “you’ll understand someday, Edgeworth”.

 it WOULD be incredibly awkward and painful to just be say “UM NO EDGEWORTH SPIRIT CHANNELING IS REAL YOUR DAD JUST THOUGHT YOU KILLED HIM AND LIED TO THE MEDIUM TO PROTECT YOU FROM TRAUMA. WHICH DIDN’T WORK BUT WHATEVER”. Phoenix ain’t droppin’ that bomb on him.

TIME TO GO TALK TO IRIS…EXCEPT NOT REALLY. I think I remember what happened here, Iris and Maya-channeling-Dahlia switched places in the sacred cavern….

You can honestly tell she’s Dahlia if you pay attention to her dialogue- mostly when Phoenix messes up

Iris: I had hoped you would get at least this much correct. I hate seeing you mess up and getting all disappointed.

Phoenix: (Nngh... I didn't know she could be so harsh...)

And she also says “that’s no position for a lawyer to find himself in” if he stumbles another time. Dahlia’s gonna find a way to own Phoenix even if she has to pretend to be sweet, just gotta do it. 

Then of course when Phoenix says Dahlia “began relations with a certain college student in order to hide the evidence. That college student... Have you heard anything about him...?”

Iris:... Well... I did hear one thing... She said she hated his guts. :D

REALLY SUBTLE THERE DAHLIA. Awww Phoenix is so sad and she’s so cackling inside about it. She really is an excellent villain.

AND GUESS WHAT. I’D STILL RATHER TALK TO HER THAN GODOT.

Agh it’s just like. Dahlia’s brand of evil is delicious and chilling- it’s fun to watch even if it’s horrible. She knows what she’s doing and she’s having fun with it.

Guess who’s going to lecture Phoenix because he, I don’t know, didn’t feel that Mia was being murdered with his Spidey-sense and then swing over at the speed of light to punch the murderer to death or whatever he was supposed to do? Godot, of course!

 Phoenix finally points out that HE DIDN’T EVEN KNOW MIA WAS IN DANGER OR WHAT SHE WAS UP TO HOW THE FUCK WAS HE SUPPOSED TO DO ANYTHING. And Godot’s response is that “being oblivious is a crime.”

YEAH PHOENIX. HOW DARE YOU NOT KNOW THINGS PEOPLE DON’T TELL YOU ABOUT. A REAL MAN WOULD DEVELOP PSYCHIC POWERS.

Hey Godot you know what is actually a crime. Actually knowing people are in danger, not telling them they are, doing nothing to prevent it and actually making everything infinitely worse because you wanted to do some super-violent dashing rescue to soothe your own pathetic ego. But you wouldn’t know anything about that, riiiiight?

And then Godot is like “WHATEVER MAYA’S DEAD I HAVE DECIDED THIS SO IT MUST BE SO” right in front of Pearl oh my god I hate you so much. Fortunately he finally fucking leaves and Nick reassures her.

So did they ever explain the voicemail that barry left in legends?

Not explicitly, but the crossover implied that the war was with the Dominators and the decision that ruined everything was Flashpoint. Considering the voicemail was never brought up again after 3.08, I think it’s safe to say the story is over with.

Tati, I’m conflicted. I’m excited Flash is back next Tuesday, but sad it’s ending and we’ll have to wait 4-months (maybe longer if there’s a strike) for it to return. I’m really hoping for a happy ending for B+I individually and as a couple. Barry needs to be fast enough to save the woman he loves and they need to start planning for their wedding. I’m dreading Barry having to stop his S2 self from going back in time and creating FP, but I know it’s coming because that’s how the season began.

I am very hopeful that there will be a happy ending, just because so much of the season has been hopeless and dreary. Do you dread him undoing Flashpoint because of the potential timeline confusion? If they do it, I’m sure they’ll streamline it as much as possible. They probably will just say that things are ok now and Iris isn’t dying. Maybe Dante will be alive again and Lyla will be pregnant with Sara, that’s about it.

I hope Barry’s trip to 2024 actually advances the plot and not just dropped an episode or two later. In 2x17, Barry traveled back in time to get the enhancement for his speed. It worked for 2x18 against Zoom, but then he gave up his speed to save Wally. Basically, the writers have Barry go back in time for nothing.

I hope so too, because I’ve been enjoying S3 except for the dragging feeling of Barry being ineffectual. We need to start making real progress.

Looks like DP is lowkey spoiling who died and flash twitter acct is helping spread the word. Look at the pic she chose to use to say hbd to CV. Its from the season 2 finale and a certain character has on the exact same clothes in funeral pics from this year. I guess DP wants to send a message to her fans that it’s not her in the casket bc she must have a more recent pic of the three of them that should couldda used. smh.

I don’t think that was her intention, lol, but an observant fan would be able to figure out who dies for sure.

Looks like they’ve been filming in the funeral clothes a lot this week. Any theories why? It’s especially weird since Keiynan wrapped already.

Keiy is the big mystery. No idea why he missed so much of the last two episodes. As for the funeral clothes, I imagine a lot will happen immediately following the funeral. I think Candice filed as much in that white blouse as she did in her funeral clothes, though.

Tati, I think in the Flash finale we could see Barry stop himself from creating FP in the first place, like in the animated film. If that happens, how do you think it would affect the TL? Given 302, I think whatever else changes, B+I will still be engaged. Iris will work with Joe, Barry/Flash on meta cases. Possibilities: KF may seek redemption. Cynco may rise. Joe may be Captain. Wally could lose, and regain his powers. I’m curious what version of Harrison Tom C will be next year? Joecile?

I kind of answered this question above, but I think things will mostly be the same. I hope we stick with E2 Harry next season and stop creating new characters for Tom C. Joecile has got to continue and Cecile will probably know Flash’s secret too.

If it’s real, Berlanti, AJK, Johns and the Helbings are some methodical mofo’s that planned this since S1. Stein to Eddie in 123: There’s no science in coincidence…You sir, are an anamoly, a wildcard, if you will. The only one in this whole story that gets to choose his own future. MIND BLOWN 💥I thought it would be him, but WOW!

Hiiii, lol. I think Eddie being Savitar is just someone spreading fake news, but I agree that it is one of the few options that makes sense. I know a lot of people are against it, but I’m not. I just don’t think it will be him, but I’d welcome it if it was.

I know this may not be relevant but…. Apparently CG recently trolled k@ramel fans about m*nel dying. Another tipster pursuit23 commented on his Twitter that CG doesn’t have access to that kind of information and he knows because he’s CG source. Makes me wonder about that spoiler CG released a few weeks ago and​ how valid it is….

I think pursuit meant that CG specifically didn’t know that info, not that he doesn’t know that kind of information in general. If what CG said a few weeks back were totally fabricated, pursuit would’ve said something.
