i saw an account post that, unfortunately, if you are a jason todd fan account then you’ve most definitely gotten an ask along the lines of “if you like fanon jason then you’ll definitely like canon helena/steph/mia” and was wondering if you’ve ever gotten an ask like that

I've gotten a few about Helena specifically, never Steph or Mia so I'm going to talk about Helena rather than generalize what I'm about to say to both of them too (because I was actually thinking about this a few weeks ago!)

Those people are right...in a way. If you want christian guilt (that Jason does not in UTRH and should not ever struggle with) and genuine efforts to be accepted by the Bats? You want Helena. A character whose relationship with killing can be benefited by people bringing her into their light without rendering her previous choices pointlessly antagonistic? that's Helena.

Then there's also the factor of Helena often, in canon, being treated as unstable and untrustworthy, no matter what she does to prove otherwise. and that's seen as a continued failing on her part, even if it's others that refuse to believe in her. Jason constantly being pushed into those situations in fanon and canon is very Helena coded. He's got her good and bad.

But if you like the Jason from UTRH era, arguably the best written Jason post-resurrection (which isn't saying much because...we all know how he's written most of the time), then Helena would never work for you because they're so different. Even with fanon, there's only a certain extent it can apply to. Helena's not Bruce daughter, he didn't raise her, she was never family for him outside the costume (or in it. but that hurts me to say), and she certainly wasn't Dick's sister. So those dynamics should be different inherently, even in fanon where they're altered to resemble something like what Helena has. There's still a history that Jason has here that she naturally doesn't.

I think it's too vague and unhelpful of a thing to say if you're trying to make people interested in Helena or change their portrayal of Jason. But I do see the basis of it.

#heavy on the catholic guilt btw. ik it's not the point but i want you all to let flashpoint jason go. helena's such a great character that #even i cared about her christian guilt and i seriously do not gaf about christians. but it just doesnt work for jason. give it up loves #i do not however think helena's being pushed out of the spotlight is entirely or even mostly due to jason lol #she was already being pulled out of gotham way before he became so similar to her. and then she got pushed to the background in favour of #male characters the same way steph and cass have been for quite a while now.#but if we're talking about fanon specifically? i think most ppl simply dont know she exists bc they dont read comics. even babs cass and #steph struggle to make the cut despite being much more well known so this is really a ppl not caring about female charas issue than jason #specifically stealing her light in fanon. the other male charas' fans arent exactly hyping her up daily either #anyways. maybe im not the best person to ask to begin with since i dont like fanon jason

a canticle for leibowitz a book that is like a vaccine in getting you to forgive fictional christians for being annoying. i love you religion prevailing after the world ends and then starts again i love you the cyclical nature of man and empires and nations

#yes i cried reading abbot zerchi talking about killing his dying cat with a gun and then a shovel bc it refused to die #and kept trying to escape and kept trying to wait and die with dignity. and that he thought he should've let it #and it was unnatural to not let it.#this books christianity is less the death cult that it is in real life and more life is the most important thing in the world #and of course it would be. to a faction of belief that is the only one that cared to remember what led to the deaths of billions and to #protect the knowledge that was being destroyed because of it.#because of this it's less any sort of meditation on actual christianity so it's not as insufferable to read as something like. idk. ben-hur #and walter miller jr definitely does a good job of establishing this by having the characters have such different stances on religion/the #purpose of it than most christians do now. he called the 'poor artists' of before and their popular more feminine 'pretty' depiction of #jesus christ as like. basically blasphemous to him. very interesting indeed.#abbot zerchi in particular says this it's a good line #plus its very funny . genuinely witty and charming and made me laugh out loud #anyways. brother francis my stupid monk boy dont be dead girl be alive #a canticle for leibowitz

the people who think that christianity is the worst most problematic religion ever and the people who think that islam is the worst most problematic religion ever are two sides of the same coin to me

#mind blank no original thoughts no nuance #not actually caring about women and other people who are negatively effected by the religion.#if you don't care about all women who are oppressed by religion then you don't care about any women #like the ppl on here who criticise xianity all the time for being sexist or homophobic #but then refuse to do that for any other religion?? ok so u dont actually care about women and gay people beyond ur culturally xian bubble👍#meanwhile they refuse to recognise that xians are oppressed in many parts of the world alongside other religious groups like muslims #just completely western centric #this isn't to deny that christianity is oppressive like ofc there's valid criticisms of it #personally i think the catholic church should be dismantled lol #but it is not uniquely oppressive and to pretend it is is to position victims of religious oppression in a hierarchy #with xians at the top while ignoring other victims and refusing to build up solidarity with them #and u could say that this is an online problem but it's not. its so pervasive in the actual world bc ppl are either focused on their own #experiences (which is understandable to an extent but still pls look at the world around u lol) or they are so focused on defeating bigotry #that they ignore any and all criticisms of another religion. which also is not helpful and actually damages their cause #not to mention the people who are actively harmed by forms of that religion everyday #this doesn't just apply to these two religions obviously but unfortunately this dominates western social cultural debate #like i think you could definitely make parallels here with irish history and politics and how the liberalisation of both the north and the #south is a key part of the peace process. northern protestants became more at ease & trusting of the roi when it started to liberalise and #develop out of essentially being a catholic theocracy. northern catholics were more accepting of the existence of ni when protestant #domination and the protestant churches/o.o. could no longer decide government actions #a united ireland is more likely now because the republic has (largely) thrown off the shackles of the catholic church #like in the late 20th century northern protestants were generally fearful of the republic and considering divorce wasnt legal there until #the 90s it was with good reason. it wasnt all in their heads lol #idk i just think there's similarities there #posting this against my better judgement. please engage in good faith if you engage at all lol

that reminded me of how the silk roads book took such a fucking detour into religion like obviously religion has historically influenced a huge huge part of society and everyday life, especially regarding inter-cultural relations which shape trade routes and such, but come on, if i pick up a book about the silk road im looking for a book about the fucking silk road not three chapters and then endless explanations of religion

not to be a smug asshole but its kind of rich how if you say you dont like a thing on the internet everyone who likes that thing automatically assumes you just “don’t get it” and tries to explain to you why the thing is Good, Actually. like maybe i already understand why people like the thing. maybe i have reasons to not like the thing that YOU are refusing to entertain. maybe i used to like the thing because of the specific reasons that you’re writing essays to me about. but then i realized that the thing sucks shit and the reasons why people like it isn’t enough to make it good for me again. maybe my dislike of the thing isn’t because im a stupid idiot who couldn’t put two thoughts together to realize why the thing is good. and maybe i feel belittled and dare i say offended when 12 people condescendingly explain to me why it’s okay that i don’t like the thing, but also refuse to stop explaining the same 2 reasons why THEY like the thing, or even let me defend why i dislike the thing, until i agree with them that the thing is good. all because i dared to express mild disdain on the internet

#shut up pandora #i don't care if people like things i dislike and tell me so but some of yall act like proselytizing christians about it #a while ago i had someone write an essay on a post talking about why a ship i dont like is totally canon guys theyre totally in love #and the ship in questions has not had any conversations in 10 episodes which was why i disliked it #but the argument for it boiled down to 'why does this ship between two main characters HAVE to have any significant onscreen development'#'why cant we just build up this ship based on longing looks like the TJLC ppl. its impossible for you to think thats bad writing'#anyway we ended up dming and i tried to clarify that i dont think its well written to build up a relationship on 'subtle glances'#without having them actually interact with each other. at least not a heavily focused on endgame couple involving main characters #at the end of the very frustrating conversation where they just repeated the 'subtle hints' thing over and over again condescendingly #it turns out they thought i agreed to the conversation bc i wanted them to convince me to like the ship!#so they literally didn't listen to anything i said except to hashtag destroy my points with hashtag facts and hashtag logic #and like. you think i haven't looked at all the 'subtle hints' before this conversation? this is a popular ship and i want to like it!#but i looked at it and thought about it and decided i didn't like it! i even said so on the original post!#the point of the post was 'i dont think having the ship longingly gaze at each other counts as a well written ship if they dont ever talk'#and their 'rebuttal' was 'youre wrong it IS well written! why? well because they longingly gaze at each other'#anyway i was just feeling annoyed about that again #also that time an mlb fan sent me a wholeass wordpress essay on why mlb is Good Actually #after i explained i understand why people like it. i was a fan actually! i just both grew out of it and realized the writing is really bad #so bad in fact that the reasons i liked it werent enough to redeem the show for me and it keeps getting worse #anyway yes im vagueposting about people but messaging strangers to restart a months old argument is more deranged i think #i hope the people who condescendingly hop on a strangers posts to write them essays on why they Dont Get It Actually #uhhhhhhhhhhhhh maybe stop that!

I feel like the idea of "forgiveness" for people who've hurt you is like... Pretty christian based? Bc ngl. Why tf am i forgiving someone who abused me a lot. If we're talking "mental peace"... Well bud i kinda just gotta not think about it or when i do to work on my emotions around it so i can cope better with my trauma. Literally why am i forgiving people who dont regret hurting me and who would never apologize and how exactly does that bring more "peace"? Bc personally id feel like im ignoring something that bothers me a lot just so i can tolerate being around it when idk. Theres people who i definitely dont need to tolerate being around lol.

anyway i had a dream last night that when i finally came back to my home michaels store, one of the last two normal cash registers had been converted to another self checkout register, and next to the self check out area, we had a whole fucking arcade installed
