ever wonder why spotify/discord/teams desktop apps kind of suck?
i don't do a lot of long form posts but. I realized that so many people aren't aware that a lot of the enshittification of using computers in the past decade or so has a lot to do with embedded webapps becoming so frequently used instead of creating native programs. and boy do i have some thoughts about this.
for those who are not blessed/cursed with computers knowledge Basically most (graphical) programs used to be native programs (ever since we started widely using a graphical interface instead of just a text-based terminal). these are apps that feel like when you open up the settings on your computer, and one of the factors that make windows and mac programs look different (bc they use a different design language!) this was the standard for a long long time - your emails were served to you in a special email application like thunderbird or outlook, your documents were processed in something like microsoft word (again. On your own computer!). same goes for calendars, calculators, spreadsheets, and a whole bunch more - crucially, your computer didn't depend on the internet to do basic things, but being connected to the web was very much an appreciated luxury!
that leads us to the eventual rise of webapps that we are all so painfully familiar with today - gmail dot com/outlook, google docs, google/microsoft calendar, and so on. as html/css/js technology grew beyond just displaying text images and such, it became clear that it could be a lot more convenient to just run programs on some server somewhere, and serve the front end on a web interface for anyone to use. this is really very convenient!!!! it Also means a huge concentration of power (notice how suddenly google is one company providing you the SERVICE) - you're renting instead of owning. which means google is your landlord - the services you use every day are first and foremost means of hitting the year over year profit quota. its a pretty sweet deal to have a free email account in exchange for ads! email accounts used to be paid (simply because the provider had to store your emails somewhere. which takes up storage space which is physical hard drives), but now the standard as of hotmail/yahoo/gmail is to just provide a free service and shove ads in as much as you need to.
webapps can do a lot of things, but they didn't immediately replace software like skype or code editors or music players - software that requires more heavy system interaction or snappy audio/visual responses. in 2013, the electron framework came out - a way of packaging up a bundle of html/css/js into a neat little crossplatform application that could be downloaded and run like any other native application. there were significant upsides to this - web developers could suddenly use their webapp skills to build desktop applications that ran on any computer as long as it could support chrome*! the first applications to be built on electron were the late code editor atom (rest in peace), but soon a whole lot of companies took note! some notable contemporary applications that use electron, or a similar webapp-embedded-in-a-little-chrome as a base are:
microsoft teams
notion
vscode
discord
spotify
anyone! who has paid even a little bit of attention to their computer - especially when using older/budget computers - know just how much having chrome open can slow down your computer (firefox as well to a lesser extent. because its just built better <3)
whenever you have one of these programs open on your computer, it's running in a one-tab chrome browser. there is a whole extra chrome open just to run your discord. if you have discord, spotify, and notion open all at once, along with chrome itself, that's four chromes. needless to say, this uses a LOT of resources to deliver applications that are often much less polished and less integrated with the rest of the operating system. it also means that if you have no internet connection, sometimes the apps straight up do not work, since much of them rely heavily on being connected to their servers, where the heavy lifting is done.
taking this idea to the very furthest is the concept of chromebooks - dinky little laptops that were created to only run a web browser and webapps - simply a vessel to access the google dot com mothership. they have gotten better at running offline android/linux applications, but often the $200 chromebooks that are bought in bulk have almost no processing power of their own - why would you even need it? you have everything you could possibly need in the warm embrace of google!
all in all the average person in the modern age, using computers in the mainstream way, owns very little of their means of computing.
i started this post as a rant about the electron/webapp framework because i think that it sucks and it displaces proper programs. and now ive swiveled into getting pissed off at software services which is in honestly the core issue. and i think things can be better!!!!!!!!!!! but to think about better computing culture one has to imagine living outside of capitalism.
i'm not the one to try to explain permacomputing specifically because there's already wonderful literature ^ but if anything here interested you, read this!!!!!!!!!! there is a beautiful world where computers live for decades and do less but do it well. and you just own it. come frolic with me Okay ? :]
*when i say chrome i technically mean chromium. but functionally it's same thing

An Intro:
| He/They | ♈︎ | mid 20s loser |
Um howdy, I'm memberment and currently acting like a loser over South Park, Homestuck, Moral Orel, and anything horror movie related. I'm also stuck in the orbit of someone else's roller coaster special interest so there's that. I write a copious amount of fanfiction to cope with uni being terrible and being stuck in the US.
This blog is dedicated to my almost-delusions, rambles, and fic updates. I don't have a tag guide as I've never seen the point in one or actually tagging anything but people are showing up here so that's likely going to change as I write and scream more than I do just about anything else.
Um I don't have a DNI list because I don't really care. Just don't be gross. Oh and if you support censorship we're not cool. Okay actually DNI if you support censorship. (Excuse me I'm writing this as I go.)
I would tag all my published fics but we'd literally be here for like a whole business week so I'm just gonna drop my ao3 and whatnot below.
AO3: memberment
Twitter: memberment
Instagram that I don't and probably will never actually use: men.berment (I'm still thrown that memberment was taken)
Other Blogs: memberment, membermentmania, trinitarianism
Asks are encouraged because I do love to yap. Please ask me about fics or what I'm doing in school (it's boring but it forces me to talk about what I'm learning so I don't forget and seven week semesters fucking suck guys fr) or literally anything else I honestly don't care.
Anyways, here's my ao3 link:
https://archiveofourown.org/users/memberment/works
*Warning, just like on there, which I'm assuming you found me from, I genuinely don't shut the fuck up on here unless I'm having an episode, on a quest, or sleeping so buyer beware I guess????
Tag Guide:
#membermentfics — exactly what you think it is
#cssadventures — making a tag specifically for this project as it is huge, not done, and will not be done for a bit as I am taking a break
#trin — this is all Trinitarians related stuff
#membermentsfridge — ok I make one art every like, six business years, but people make me art sometimes so fuck it we're getting a tag for it bc I just wanna put them all on my fridge and cry about it
#remsdrinkworld — this one's more for myself as I am a drink ho and wanted somewhere to put all my drink recipes so I don't lose them but feel free to be nosy
*Guys I'm putting my for office use shit below because I genuinely cannot keep track of what's what at the current moment in time and I want it pinned somewhere LMAO

Genesis Updates For Todayyyy
Good morning everyone. Not really though I've been up since 11. Crazy, right? ANYWAYS. I'm barreling through 19 and the haunting realization that I need filler so Tweek doesn't suck is slowly dawning upon me.
Updates will pull up later after I go to iHOP because that's all Americans do. We lie and be menaces online and go to iHOP. Anyways. Enjoy the art I made on the bus while going to my doctors appointment to combat all the iHop I eat.
(yes I figured out how to properly use the eraser tool and I am going at it)
But also can I get some input here I kinda wanna change the art style of all the stuff I have so far to fit this kinda vibe but IDK how to implement it because color is SO important to the fic and I want the beginning stuff to look cute. Like I need a visible difference between the characters at the beginning versus them at the end. If anyone has any ideas please enlighten me bc I would LOVE to make these changes while I only have like five things done and not when I have like 30. Much love.
I lied I'm not going to iHOP it just started storming like crazy. SO ENJOY UR UPDATES <3
6:24: We are now 62.8k deep and chapter nineteen is done. On my way to twenty!!! (Things are getting interesting.)
Another one bites the dust ig
9:57 Me writing creek like I'm not about to kill them in six chapters is fucking insane LMFAO
12:35 I keep getting distracted but guys I feel so fucking bad for Craig rn LMAO
1:12: Craig has gone crazy and I have too because I'm playing with CSS instead of writing.
3:53 STOP I'm rereading because my chapters grow slightly shorter and I will not let that slide and there are things that need to be implemented but reading this without warning actually just made me wheeze LIKE WHO DO I THINK I AM LMFAOOOO
okay happy 7am I am closing this doc with 66.1k and chapter 20 is pretty much done GOODNIGHT.

Game DevLog #0
tldr a bunch of preamble, introduction and context
Heya, im Tracy, or Quantum Temporal Anomaly(depending how "Human" u want to see me atm) ive been makin drawings online for the past 7 years!!! IM OLD :D (either that or i was online far too young)
im not a master at any craft yet, but ive spec'd into Drawing(krita, photoshop,Clip Studio, paint, debatably Ibis Paint), 3D Modeling(blender), a wee bit into HTML and CSS(Brackets), 3d printing(Ender 3 and CR10), could talk about most of those at a reasonable proficiently
ive only recently got into Godot some time last year, after learning very VERY barebones Unity(and Scratch...less said about that the better) in senior year of highschool and kinda been on and off with it since. although its been more than a year since i first picked it up, in reality ive only dedicated like, a bit more than a month of days to Godot.
so im still very much a novice when it comes to godot and programming in general, but ive been slowly learning!!
so far, ive been thinkin up of a game inspired by MegaMan Network transmission/Rockman WS but with less limitations of the hardware it was made on(although now through the limitations of a dude who has no clue how to code!!), i wanna see the chip system+platforming be fulfilled to at least an image of it's fullest potential!
(also maybe ill take some stuff here and there from MMX)
what do i have to show for my efforts?
whole lotta nothing... BUT if there is no hope, what do we have at all!
we have something!!! spaghetti code, sure. could be better, absolutely. i have restarted the project from scratch like, seven times? this time ive gotten the furthest! basically ""final"" movement code+MMX Dashing, and the foundations to an actual Chip system!!
ill be making more dev logs, probably on me cleaning up some stuff so i can write out my though processes and struggles
the player script is functionally a giant 270 line mess rn BUT i know why, i didnt use composition..
i dont have much lore for this character bc rn theyre functionally a blank sleight bc i dont want to commit my actual characters to this.
PS im running Godot 3, i hate the tile mapping system in Godot 4 and idk why its like that. i heard it better for 3D games but it does suck missing out of new features..
IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR ADVICE GO PLEASE SEND EM MY WAY
or if you want to chat about any of the before mentioned interests go for it, would be nice to make friends with peeps from the Game dev/ godot community

am currently working on a neocities site (which i cannot give you the url for yet because im working on the css still and there's no content also it looks ugly still) and oh man does it take me back to ye olde days of custom theme editing on here. i still use a custom theme obvs but back in like 2014/2015ish when i was really into indie rp custom themes were all the rage and you would spend hours editing some character specific image for your bg and then another several hours trying to make the css line up with your image (never at any point did i attempt to actually like. learn html or css. i just read other people's theme codes and edited the parts i could understand and solved problems as they arose. i distinctly remember one time i was using a base that had two sidebars and i only wanted one and deleting the section broke the theme in disastrous ways [bc i had no idea what i was doing] so i literally just made all the elements in the sidebar transparent and moved them off the screen LMAO. the best i ever got was moving from fully built custom themes that i edited to base themes that i built off of)
anyway while im slightly better now (im even reading tutorials! am i following them? sorry i have to go i think someones calling me) i am using a layout builder to build the homepage so it is even more reminding me of mid-2010s tumblr. much like building off a base theme, and definitely easier to understand than tumblr theme building (this time i at least know what all the different pieces of code are doing, even when im not sure how or why, or how to duplicate the effect under slightly different circumstances. but progress is progress!).
a good but annoying thing about the layout that im using is that i havent actually edited the site wide stylesheet, just used internal css on that one page, so when i go to make literally any other page i'll have to start from scratch. this is good because i am learning a lot and i think without doing it this way i would end up with a bunch of useless stuff in the stylesheet that really should be page-specific that i would have to correct with internal or inline css later. annoying because what do you mean i have to make decisions about the sizing and positions of the content? i literally just did that
also im kind of nervous to touch the general stylesheet because im pretty sure what i'll actually want to do is have a couple of stylesheets for different 'sections' of the website, to maintain cohesion between pages of the 'same' type but still allow a lot of fun customization on a per-page basis, but that requires deciding what 'sections' i want on the website and that is a whole other can of worms. but also you can't start without starting so i should probably just try to build a really simple layout and go from there (after all, if it sucks, it's not like i can't just create a new stylesheet, or do the css for each page independently until i hit a groove that's actually worth moving to the stylesheet). but also first i have to finish this goddamn homepage. which means i gotta find a header image that doesn't look ugly as shit
#good idea generator#i dont need a header but im scared of deleting the image in case i break the code and if i go back to the layout maker#i'll have to redo all the code i already did. and im not doing that it was so annoyinggggggg#im having so much fun though. enrichment in my enclosure or whatever#also i found a bunch of my old theme editing stuff while looking for resources and i was like woww i even look like i know what im doing#but ultimately the trick was 90% of my background image should have been css elements instead#like i had a nice box around my content. i should have used a container with a border in the css#but what i did was make a bg img with a box in it already. then try to fit the content to that box#and if youre wondering no i never tested shit all on different screens and i def did not understand positioning#so definitely the boxes did not line up on anyone elses screen. well you live and you learn!

accidentally spent 4 hours fiddling and modifying the google translate page to make a coherent dark mode that doesnt suck with stylus
google translate never implemented their darkmode to it so i did so by force
i initially got stylus bc someone made some css code to inject into twitter to get rid of the stupid blurring on the media tab on users who draw\post porn
now i use it as an alternative to bernards darkmode so it doesnt add any overlay or mask to pictures
but god damn do i not know how to code but finding the correct rules and sorting out the divs so i can better adjust things and make websites not flash bang me is great
its suuuuuuuuuuper useful for when porn sites are awful to look at on desktop i would suffer if i tried to do any of that on android firefox lmao

ALIAS. i don't like giving out a name on the internet for now except in specific cases AGE. i don't want my age public anymore, but im closing on my 30s in a few ZODIAC. the fish one but i don't believe in any of that unless im using it for fictional characters cuz then i might be able to work it into some story themes (very ironic bc Nozomi Tojo is one of my favs and i loved RPing her) HEIGHT. i don't know if it's 5'6 or 5'7 anymore nobody can seem to agree plus my spine isn't all straight so who knows but somewhere there HOBBIES. tbh i got nothing going on rn (im not gonna publicly disclose it but i am waiting on something BIG, like move to Europe and turn into Lili BIG) so idk if i can call anything 'Hobbies' anymore because 'Hobbies' implies a degree of separation from work you normally do, at this point this shit is 'Activities' that keep me sane: Video Games, Music collecting, physical media collection, electronics & electronics repair, motorcycles, bicycles, cooking, reading (but it's been a struggle to go back to lol), museums, graphic design, photography, videography (game footage + post production programs), language studies, a little bit of html & css coding but that one is hard, learning about film making- other things i would do but i need money to actually go for them and buy the equipment like fishing, metalwork, silversmithing, pottery etc. i developed some health problems over the years that made me have to limit this list as it is right now- i would love to draw but i have to get over my impatience
FAVOURITE COLOUR. Blue FAVOURITE BOOKS. The Call of the Wild, anything Shirley Jackson, Ursula Leguin, A Canticle for Leibowitz, Catch-22, Black Beauty, the Stormlight Archive up to book 3 from book 4 on it's been a struggle bc the prose changed imo and book 2 is the best one + Edgedancer, liked Kingkiller Chronicles but im pretty sure it's never being finished, and some of what I got through for Wheel of Time up to book 4 too (im just dragging my feet it's not that the books suck outright but there is some dated shit in there), The Hobbit (i'm reading LOTR too or i tried but it meanders too much for me imo, it's good and i get why it's meandering but god it could have used SOME trimming bc it stops feeling on theme- read later), Gary Paulsen's Hatchet, i loved The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe as a kid but the C.S. Lewis christian propaganda went right over my head lmao, Neverending Story (not the film), Stone Butch Blues, Yusuke Kishi's 新世界より (i have the orig bunkobon but you can only find the novel in ENG online) Koshun Takami's Battle Royale (i own the JP orig and the ENG edition, movie ver sucks movie ver sucks idc), The Canterbury Tales etc etc too many books, but i think the Scythe series is an interesting modern YA too, when I was in middle school i put myself through The Tale of Genji and i think im still trying to really understand it years later idk how much i Like it but it did Impress on me, my fav Shakespeare so far is Othello, one of my fav short stories is Chapter Six LAST SONG. Ashanti - Foolish LAST MOVIE. Er ist wieder da (Look Who's Back) - the jokes are fucking NON STOP w this one then you get deeper into it then to the end and it gets Real and Real and Real and it becomes terrifying LAST SHOW. The Sopranos RECENT READ. Beyond Good and Evil by Friedrich Nietzsche (still reading)

can you pls share your inspirations on trin/genesis/revelations?
its been a long time since you talked about that series I think
Oh my god.
Okay yes. I am trying to collect my thoughts but I'm really just lead paint staring as I try not to explode.
So this is a bit of a complicated answer as there is A LOT.
And also a sort of piecey answer as Trin has three distinct parts that are very different from each other. Sort of. In my opinion.
So to start, Trin overall takes inspiration from three main sources, I would say, Madoka Magica (the big one), the Bible, and Magical Girl Site. AND I WANT TO SAY IT HERE. IT TAKES INSPO FROM MAGICAL GIRL SITE IN PREMISE ALONE. I could talk for SEVERAL HOURS about how Magical Girl Site had so much fucking promise, like I stumbled upon that shit and was left with so much joy, only to face the worst disappointment I have ever faced in my life. I thugged the whole fucking story out for it to get worse every single turn. I have since learned it is okay to just be a quitter sometimes. Sometimes it's okay to stay curious. I'm gettin off topic. Moral of the story, please do not even bother looking into this one, I am just not a liar and need to give credit where it's due.
Genesis: Heavy Madoka Magica elements here. This is my starting point. Because Trin was my 'rewrite' of Wishes, which was just a Madoka Magica AU that followed the story with my own twist. And it was fucking great until I wrote myself into a corner when I got up to the Rebellion Arc. Which sucked. But we got this. And of course, I was like reading the Bible heavy during writing this because I wanted this to align in certain ways that I feel like I may or may have not delivered. There are of course other inspirations individual to the angels the characters fight, but those are all talked about in Things to Overlook and that's why that 'fic' exists. That and I wanted to play with CSS and I didn't have an outlet like CSS Adventures yet.
Also that one Magical Girl Craig TikTok account. Idk if it still exists, I never even actually looked at their profile I don't think, but the user/pfp combo showed up on several comments sections I wound up in and that shit made me laugh so hard and sometimes that's all it takes for my stupid little idiot brain to have a vision.
Revelations: Okay, so I need y'all to stay with me here. I mentioned previously that this takes inspiration from a magical girl series that me and all of six people would actually consider a magical girl series. So I'm just gonna out and say it because we've already established I'm like outing myself for pride month or whatever. Revelations HEAVILY corresponds to Higurashi: When They Cry. NOT JUST THE OG. I MEAN KAI, GOU, AND SOTSU TOO. (Part three was almost called Karma and had a COMPLETELY different ending because of this, but I have since seen enlightenment, as per the next lil segment of this response.)
Revelations also has HEAVYYY Harlan Ellison elements. All of the IHNMAIMS references from Genesis and on are so fucking important, subtle and easy to miss, and absolutely on purpose. Like it's not just I have no mouth, and I will absolutely just drop everything here because who's really reading these besides the angel who asked, right? But The Beast That Shouted Love at the Heart of the World was also very taken into consideration here.
Adventure Time. I'm not elaborating. But it's important.
Again, assume the Bible is taken into consideration for everything in this fic and I don't have a specific spot on Things to Overlook to talk about this so I'm just going to say it here because again I'm just fucking talking at this point.
It's REVELATION. It's... BOOK OF REVELATION. The title of this work is RevelationS. This is on purpose.
Rapture: Haha, final title drop bc I actually don't know if I dropped this anywhere just yet?
Rapture has a lot of inspiration from the Madoka Magica Rebellion movie, actually. Because I finally got there. Hilarious, I know. But I also loosely took the concept and ran, like, seventeen fucking miles with it. Because Rapture underwent SO MANY CHANGES from the original ending. (Honestly when this is all over I might just post a page on tto where I talk about all of the potential endings this could've had.) I know no matter what I do with this ending, NOT EVERYONE IS GOING TO BE HAPPY.
BUT. BUT BUT BUT. The 'hit by a car' joke I have been making in nearly ALL OF MY FUCKING FICS finally comes full circle between Rev and Rapture.
And I am personally really happy with the direction this wound up taking and it's not very often where I settle on a decision with my writing and I take time with it and I let it take up space and I'm happy. But it's been months and I'm genuinely happy with this. So there's that.
I'm trying to think if there's anything else as far as Rapture goes but really it's kinda just me taking Rebellion and running while I giggle, scream, and blow everything up like the fucking Joker. Sorry.
Again, thank you for asking this, it took me ages to respond to (I think, it feels like I've been typing on this one specifically for years), I had a fuckin' blast. ALSO IF YOU READ ALL THIS THANK YOU???

who on earth decided my web programming theory class would only be an hour AND that it would be scheduled directly before my linux os theory -_- and yet my lab classes are 2 hours which makes sense for the ones where everyone has 2 demo but in some of them the prof just answers q's and they could be done in like 45 min (and then u have my java lecture which is 2 hours but we still never cover everything we're supposed 2, but that prof still ends on time at least n just shifts the missed stuff 2 the next class)
#it ALWAYS goes late and i ALWAYS have 2 decide between missing a a bit at the end of one or at tye beginning of the next#technically if a class it 8:30-9:30 its supposed to end at 9:20 bc u need time 2 move bw classes#even online u need a lil gap 2 just switch zoom cslls/use bathroom/get water etc#also were behind in my linux lecture now so my prof is like 'we MUST start at 9:30!!'#hnggggh actually none of my lectures that r scheduled as 1 hour actually conclude within that :/#damn im really not absorbing this javascript lecture :| good thing i have the barest passing knowledge of java#got the html n css part of our big oroject due next week n i havent started :((#in slightly more urgent news ive gotta do my java labs 3 and 4 before thursday#and i would Really Really Prefer 2 not have a wholeass sobbing breakdown this time#had 2 go 2 MY FUCKING BROTHER???!? for emotional support??? it sucked. but was better than nothing ig#if youve been following me a long time n remember my old personal posts. u Know how crazy that is 😬#i hate college

hi reddit. here are some tips.
i will be putting these below a "readmore" - which is the first lesson. on desktop there is a button for this. on mobile you type :readmore: followed by a linebreak. it is considered common ettique to shorten your long posts in this way.
by the way, are you reblogging a long post that isn't under a readmore? tag that as #long post so users can blacklist it and not have to scroll for five years.
(weird gaps in bullet points due to character limits lmao)
Title. Icon. Banner. blog description. (look around if you need an idea for what to put in your blog description.) Blogs without this information (ESPECIALLY the no icon + no title combo) gets you blocked immediately. This is because tumblr has always had a severe bot problem. Just grab a meme from your camera roll or a picture of a character you like from google.
also, because most users have their pronouns in their bio, it is expected that you will look there to check before addressing them, out of courtesy. don't just default to "they" - only do that if a person's pronoun's are unclear or if the pronouns listed ARE "they."
Disable public likes. the like button is for personal bookmarking. very often, people will like posts they have not read yet, so that they can read them later. a person's likes is not always reflective of their stances, and if your likes are public, people may use them against you in an argument. think of your likes as your browser history. tumblr users value privacy in this instance.
unrelated to the above point: likes are also used to show compassion for a user going through a tough time, or to say "hey, i thought this joke you made was funny." this use of likes is more for friend-to-friend communication.
Disable anything in your settings that is algorithmic including seeing posts based on other people's likes (one, because algorithms exist to make you mad and two, as part of respecting privacy)
set "following" to appear before "for you" (and overall avoid "for you")
Snooze Tumblr Live (sorry. you have to do this once a week bc tumblr sucks.)
Open your askbox so people can communicate with you. Decide if you want to allow anonymous asks and/or public DMs.
Enable the desktop version of your blog. This makes it so that when you use a computer and go to [yourusername].tumblr.com you can have a website with HTML and CSS. tumblr has tried very hard to kill blog personalization but you can find many helpful users posting in the tags, as well as pre-made themes you can install. tumblr users are the ones making the bulk of neocities websites, and in general tend to be friendly in redirecting you to resources.
enabling your desktop blog also allows you to insert links and do very basic editing (like inserting line breaks) in your blog description (we call "bio") which translates to the mobile version of your theme. you have to do this in the editor for the desktop on a computer. also, editing your theme on mobile (like changing color, font) will undo your HTML. your best bet is to edit your mobile theme first and THEN do the HTML/link stuff on a computer. i know it sounds a bit convoluted but you'll figure it out. (this website is made of duct tape)
also while you are on desktop: download xkit rewritten. it won't work on mobile but it gives you a lot of helpful features. also consider installing ublock origin if you haven't already, because tumblr will sometimes add annoying widgets to their website and that tool will allow you to block them. i also use "palettes for tumblr" to customize my dashboard color. tumblr DOES have built-in dashboard themes but i do not like them personally.
pinned posts. you can pin any post you make or reblog. some people use this to pin a funny meme, and other people use the pinned post as an extended bio (or otherwise an alternative to it). a tumblr post made on desktop can hold up to 30 images (the limit is 10 on mobile.) you can also embed links, a video, and even audio. you can change text color, have bullet points, and increase font size. as such, you can express yourself much more in a pinned post than in your mobile blog description. a typical pinned post may include information about the user, a link to an external website (like a carrd, neocities, or linktree), and sometimes an image or two. tumblr allows you to disable reblogs for a post, so most pinned posts are set this way so it just stays on a user's blog.
DNIs (also called "BYF"). not everyone uses them, and they can be divisive. it stands for "Do Not Interact" - and is a boundary set to keep people away. this may include age (example: "minors DNI"), political opinions (example: "prolifers DNI"), and sometimes deeply niche online discourse. DNIs are also sometimes a joke (example: "DNI if you like tuna salad"). there is actually a meme where someone will write a post with a very long, unreasonable DNI and users will count how many apply to them.
If you would upvote a post on reddit, you would reblog it here. If you see something and you think it is cool, you think it is funny, or you think it is helpful, reblog it. Some users have sideblogs (you can have infinite sideblogs attached to your main account) to organize all of the posts they reblog. Others simply use a tagging system for organizational purposes (and so users can blacklist ("filter") those tags in their settings if they don't want to see the post). For example, if I followed a user for Star Trek, but they also posted a lot of Star Wars, I might add "#star wars" to my list of filters. This way, I am only seeing the Star Trek posts. Tumblr's default way of handling this is to display a box that says "this post contains #Star Wars" and you can choose whether or not to open it. on desktop with xkit rewritten, you can have it hide those boxes entirely. please use filters. your sanity will thank you.
In a reblog, Organizational Tags are for /you./ I see a lot of confusion about this from new users. If you reblog someone else's post and add 500 tags..... it's not going to get picked up in tumblr search. You're not going to get any sort of exposure. Because it is not your post. Those tags are only for /you/ - if you want to find the post again.
tags are also used for commentary. most tumblr users do /not/ talk in post replies or in the comments of a reblog. most of them talk in tags. tags have a character limit so these messages are broken up in fragments. tumblr uses a comma (,) to make a new tag, so users often use either no punctuation or a period (.) or a hyphen (-) to break up thoughts. two apostrophes ('') are used instead of quotation marks (because they dont work in tags). this is also where "tumblr writing style" comes from. we all began to write in lowercase and use punctuation in. a weird way. like. for emphasis. there is also the Tumblr Comma, a special unicode character that resembles a comma and works in tags when copy+pasted or put there with a keyboard shortcut. but this is often not used. here it is: ‚
also here's an example of tags. you will notice that commentary goes before organizational: #GOD DHSHSKDDJDL #i cannot BELIEVE i forgot about this. what the fuck #star trek #spock
when leaving tags, most users talk to themselves. but please remember that tags can be seen by anyone, including the original poster. in general, it is discouraged to traumadump or be rude.
"prev tags" (which tumblr staff is trying their damnest to erase sadly) is when a user reblogs a post from another user and tags it simply ''prev'' or ''prev tags" (meaning "i agree with the previous user's tags"). sometimes it's because a thoughtful observation was made, but usually it's a way of saying "hey! that was a funny joke!" without putting the user on blast by screenshotting the tags. it's most common between friends and mutuals (users following each other). i would say it is equivalent to users whispering to each other and giggling rather than getting up on a table and shouting. "prev tag chain" is when users reblog "prev tags" "prev prev tags" - and so on. however, sadly, tumblr has removed the feature of moving backwards in a reblog chain on desktop. i have not updated my app and refuse to, so i so not know if it is gone on mobile as well, but it probably is. EDIT: the browser extension Xkit Rewritten has an option now, in "tweaks" called "restore links to individual posts in post header." it should be the first option. prev tags, on desktop at least, is saved!
screenshotting someone elses tags and adding the image in a reblog is known as "passing peer review." it is, however, considered to be Greatly Annoying to accompany those tags with unnecessary commentary (ex: "these tags pass peer review!" "WHY WOULD YOU LEAVE THIS IN THE TAGS" "LMAAOO THIS IS SO FUNNYYY"). the tags can stand on their own. the only instance in which this is different is during a serious discussion, when you want to build off of another user's perspective. in which case, you address them as normal. some people credit taggers, some people don't. crediting tends to occur in discussions.
when making an original post, do not use irrelevant tags for Exposure. this is Greatly Hated by the userbase and is also against the TOS. you will get blocked at best, reported or yelled at at worst. only add relevant tags, and do not go overboard.
reposting other people's artwork is highly discouraged and is considered the Highest Offense. if you do any sort of reposting, you should credit and link to a creator directly. however, tumblr loves reposted videos, especially ones from tiktok. there are entire accounts dedicated to posting those.
sideblogs! it is possible to have multiple blogs under one email address. tumblr treats these blogs as proxies of your main blog. this means that sending someone an ask/commenting in the replies of a post will always appear with the name of your main blog, your likes will appear with the name of your main blog, and that if you follow someone you will appear on their followers list as your main blog (so you may be mutuals with someone and not even know it because their sideblog interacts with you, but isn't on your follower's list... because their main blog is listed there instead.) however, DMs DO appear as the sideblog name. you cannot swap your main blog with your sideblog. and right now, there is a bug where deleting a sideblog will delete your entire tumblr account so. don't do that lol. anyway, the amount of sideblogs you can make is literally infinite and i think there's just a Daily Limit of creating 10 of them or something. some users make a sideblog for each interest they have. others have no sideblogs and reblog everything to main. and then you have people like me that do both. somehow. some users will make sideblogs to hoard URLs. also sorry i'm just introducing this now, but that is what our usernames are called. because when tumblr was more desktop-oriented, every blog was literally a Personal Website. so ya. we call them "URLs." anyway, if someone wants to hang onto a URL for later, they might save it on an empty blog. this usually pisses people off. a "canon URL" is when someone has a URL that is like One Word or a Company Name or a Fictional character. hypothetical examples: "ketchup" "burgerking" "lukeskywalker." these are highly rare, coveted, and you look cool as hell if you have one.
tumblr's /\/SFW policy (/\/ is an N. i've censored it.) is best described as ???. posts that are safe for work get marked as /\/SFW and hardcore p0rn somehow persists. in general, be very wary of posting even artistic nvdity (even though it is supposedly permitted.) never deliberately mark your own posts as Mature. this is essentially like walking directly into a bear trap and waving a big sign at tumblr staff saying "hey! make it so people can't find my blog and i'm far more likely to get banned!" also do not tag posts with "/\/SFW." too many of those will get your entire blog marked as mature (which makes your posts pretty much invisible to other users.) tumblr users used /\/SFT (/\/ot safe for tumblr) for a long time, but staff caught on. there is now no consensus and people use their own personal tags for it. just pick something and people will catch on and blacklist it if need be. (btw you CAN type whatever you want on this website. i am only censoring in the hopes that this will allow my post to appear in the tags. this isn't tiktok lol)
while it is possible to disable reblogs on a post, this is a very RECENT addition and most users forget it exists. as such, please use common sense. if someone has written a post about, say, how sad they are feeling because they got in a fight with their family... that's not a good post to reblog. a like would be better here, like a pat on the back.
we LOVE polls. we love them. they are like sports to us. most of them are popularity polls - who is the better character? but people also use polls for, say, making bug emojis "race" each other. or "lets build a cake." other people use polls to write poetry, or learn about regional differences, or even to draw a pen!s. if you tag a poll as "poll" it will most likely be seen and voted in, because users look in the tag to find buttons to click.
there is unfortunately a T3RF (this one censored specifically to protect my notifs lmao. 3 is E) presence here. report, block, ignore, move on. common courtesy for users to inform each other if one is accidentally reblogged from. it also helps to blacklist tags related to them to avoid them. use shinigam! eyes browser extension on desktop.
there is NO equivalent to reddit awards on this website. as the userbase hates the staff, it is considered blasphemous to spend your money on checkmarks, etc. - buying them as a gift for another user is seen as a hostile act. it's like receiving a "kick-me" sign. once owned, badges cannot be deleted. thankfully, tumblr now allows you to disable checkmarks and other badges from appearing publically. that said, some users also give checkmarks unironically to show appreciation??? and others buy checks for themselves???? so yeah. tumblr doesnt actually have a verification system - these exist to mock twitter and to make a quick buck.
tumblr blaze. essentially, tumblr has a system in place to showcase user posts instead of advertisements sometimes. this is done by the user paying money. the higher the amount, the more impressions. tumblr users can now also blaze OTHER PEOPLE'S POSTS. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE BLAZE DISABLED!!! blazing another person's post (without asking first) is seen as a hostile act. why? because most blazed posts result in rude comments from strangers who are annoyed to see the post on their dashboard. unless it's like, a cute picture of a cat. or something genuinely helpful. boosting your soundcloud or a selfie or a rant about fandom does not typically garner positive responses. you can blaze just like. watch out. and also always ask the OP if you want to blaze someone else's post. (there is a reason this feature is called "blaze pvp")
tumblr merch is also frowned upon, as tumblr staff steals ideas from the userbase and profits off of them without financially compensating or crediting the users. there was a meme on here, "vanilla extract", that tumblr turned into water bottles while the person who made the meme was having to fundraise to survive :(
BLOCK. LIBERALLY.
umm i think thats it for now. but like if you have questions feel free to launch them into The Void with some tags and users are pretty quick to help out! hopefully i covered some stuff that other ppl haven't

soooo national geographic have prevented ppl from disabling javascript to access their paywalled 'subscriber-exclusive' articles by adding an overlay which causes the article to disappear the further u scroll down... so for fun I've typed up a quick guide (below) for how to read them for free by doing a little html/css editing! normally I wouldn't bother bc you can still access the text thru saving as a webpage or 12ft.io, but this way does have the added bonus of keeping the original page formatting + images (there's often a lot of pretty photography in nat geo... + added bonus of not seeing the annoying 'unauthorised use is prohibited' messages every other paragraph). this is probably common knowledge to a lot of ppl but just thought I'd share for any less tech-fluent mutuals! enjoy <3
how to read national geographic 'subscriber exclusive' articles for free with html/css editing ;^)
paywalls suck + piracy rules! information should be for everyone. go wild.
all instructions are for firefox but I tested on a couple other browsers (edge/opera/chrome) & it worked there too!
step 1: (open page inspector) right-click + select 'inspect' or use either of the shortcuts: ctrl + shift + i or ctrl + shift + c. or you can navigate to it by clicking on the drop-down menu in the top right corner of your browser and going to ‘more tools -> developer settings’
step 2: (removes the page lock, allowing you to scroll down) navigate to 'inspector'. underneath the head section is a line beginning '<body class="Scroll--locked...' click on this then go to 'element' + untick both 'overflow:hidden' & 'position:fixed'. alternatively, you can double click on the line and manually delete both elements.
if not using firefox: ‘inspector’ may be called ‘elements’ instead… click the line ‘<body data-interaction-type…’ then go to the styles tab below + untick 'overflow:hidden' & 'position:fixed’
step 3: (removes the subscription popup box) – I found 2 ways of doing this, I’ll include them both:
method a: delete whole section of code starting '<div class="bp-mobileMDPlus...' by clicking on it + hitting the del button. make sure the little triangle points -> beforehand so that everything in that section gets deleted, if its expanded (pointing down) then just click it to close it first, otherwise you’ll have to delete every open line individually (specifically removes the paywall checking element. can be found easily by right-clicking the subscription box + selecting 'inspect' - the page inspector should navigate to the right line of code or near enough)
method b – firefox only(?): navigate to 'style editor', and hide natgeo.css by clicking the eye icon (slightly quicker method but will change formatting of some other elements, e.g., banner at top)
step 4: (removes the article overlay which causes text to fade to blank further in the article) delete the line of code '<div class="Article_Content_Overlay--gated"></div>’ by clicking on it + hitting the del button (can be found easily by scrolling down the article, right-clicking text + selecting 'inspect')
full article should now be readable! once you know what you’re doing it only takes ~30 secs
some other notes:
any edits will be undone when you refresh the page as they’re only temporarily altering the way you view the web page - so don’t hit refresh until you've finished reading!
I did this on firefox but it should work on any browser with minimal differences in the method. I've tested on opera/edge/chrome and all have worked fine for me
if you want to read nat geo articles that are NOT ‘subscriber exclusive’ but you've run out of 'free articles': this method will work for them too - but you don't need to do step 4! (the fading article overlay seems to be subscriber-exclusive…) however just temporarily disabling javascript is faster + works fine as long as there’s no overlay:
to disable javascript on firefox type about:config into the search bar. you’ll get a warning that you’re entering advanced preferences. accept this then search for ‘javascript.enabled’ and toggle from ‘true’ to ‘false’ using the little arrow switch. refresh your article page et voila! just remember to toggle it back once you’re done. this is my go-to for reading paywalled nyt articles ;-)
idk how to do this on other browsers and cba to check. google it man
you can also use 12ft.io for nat geo! much easier but doesn’t preserve og format
disclaimer I am not some tech wizard I am just a guy with a laptop who loves piracy and hates paywalls. there are tons of alternative ways of getting around them + this probably isn’t the most elegant but it works for me so! godspeed comrades <3
#I started writing this guide for a friend and then figured fuck it might as well make a post abt it too while I'm here!#sorry for any typos etc I'm very tired#piracy#paywalls#national geographic#.txt

your carrd looks really cool! but, in case you don't know, it auto-scrolls up a little bit randomly on mobile, I think it's bc of the animation (if it's intentional I apologize for being silly rn)
