Arghg I love your au!
I was wondering how public the knowledge Alastor’s and Lucifer’s relationship would go?
In other posts the other hotel residents find out but I’d imagine Alastor wouldn’t want this to get out as it might not be good for his image (and not wanting someone like Vox finding out). But I also can’t imagine Charlie or Lucifer (or really any of the residents) being all that discreet.
Arghg thank you! Much appreciated!
With Lucifer now a permanent fixture at the hotel and Charlie becoming increasingly involved in the destabilization of Heaven's foundation, the secret does have an expiration date. Particularly once Lucifer himself learns Alastor's his son. I don't think that any of the hotel residents would go spilling it, since they're a pretty tight knit group. So far, only Angel Dust is really shown to have a social life outside of the hotel, and I think he of all people knows how important it is to keep a tight lid on certain family secrets, given he was a gay man in a mafia family in the 40s. Frank might, but he says insane shit all the time. Possibly Adam if he returns as a sinner, and if Vaggie doesn't punch his teeth into the back of his throat first.
I imagine his guilt over not being there for Alastor when he was a kid, the revelation that Alastor nearly died fighting Adam, and Alastor's lingering wound and broken staff would lead Lucifer to be a tad protective. Alastor, on the other hand, would prefer to go about his normal routine as though nothing's changed. Vox is very actively trying to tear down his reputation, so it's more important than ever that Alastor show his face in public so everyone knows he's as strong and dangerous as ever. Lucifer's hovering doesn't help with that. With cocky sinners trying to take their shot, and the Vees scheming, Lucifer only clings tighter, and Alastor fights harder to prove he's unaffected.
I can see either Vox finding out the truth through his stalking, or by making some overt move against Alastor that forces Lucifer to step in to protect him. Either way, once Vox knows, it's only a matter of time before the rest of the Pride Ring does. And the public blows up over it.
Alastor's famous for being the only mortal soul to manifest in hell with such incredible power. Only, he's not a mortal soul after all! He's a royal bastard masquerading as one. No wonder he's helping out at Charlie's stupid hotel. Obviously he has a soft side towards his sister! Suddenly he's not the Radio Demon anymore. He's just the Devil's Bastard.
The carefully cultivated reputation Alastor has built suffers a heavy blow. Although Lucifer is undoubtedly the most powerful being in Hell, the sinners don't have much respect for him as a ruler. They don't so much fear his power as the idea of it, since he hasn't really done much with it in his time as King of Hell. There's no real prestige to be gained from the relation. Plus, a very large part of Alastor's power came from the mystique behind his rise. The reason was so feared was because nobody knew how he was as powerful as he was, and now that there's an explanation, he loses that. Needless to say, he's not holding up so well when the truth comes out to the public. (Cue another dramatic musical monologue.)
Knowing what jerks the people of Hell are, you can imagine the field day the news would have. Lucifer gets ripped apart by Katie Killjoy for being a no-good husband on top of being a no-good king, people are questioning whether Alastor's really as fearsome as he pretends to be, and the Vees are trying to find a way to spin this to their advantage. Lucifer's panicking - it's not like he was embarrassed of Alastor or so he says, but he wanted to be the one to tell Lilith, not have it get back to her like this - and Alastor feels like he's being strangled - by his deal, by the public response, by Charlie and Lucifer. He needs to do something to fix this, but the situation is spiraling ever out of his control.

if you're still taking them, l and t for the initials ask?
thank you mari!! 🩵
lottie (carlotta) turner: vtm. my chaotic short queen <3 she's a lasombra embraced in ~1710. formerly a governor's daughter, she basically becomes a pirate after she's turned, as there was a subset of the lasombra that used to be! unfortunately, she also has no reflection bc of this 😭 so she's commissioned a lot of paintings. in modern times she runs a nightclub called the "mermaid's tear" and eventually meets @auricfog's ira. they're very Opposites Attract, but in a good way.
laith khan: cp2077. he used to be a corporate ripperdoc for the kamiya family (which vivian, my v, was a part of). he was adopted around the age of 5 and once his parents discovered his talents (he was a prodigy) they encouraged him to work for the kamiyas. he was sending them a decent portion of his earnings until he learned they were already getting paid directly for his work and lying about it. this causes a huge rift between them. now he just works as a regular ripperdoc for those with less funds or those experiencing pretty big problems with their cyberware.
toni pereira: codmw. I MISS HER. born in brazil, she went to university in new york and earned a degree in international affairs. she eventually becomes an intelligence collection analyst for the cia and laswell's protege of sorts. she's generally used to getting close to people only to gather information so she's thrown for a loop when she joins tf141 and meets rudy through them. rudy wanting to get to know her for Real causes a reassessment of her identity lmao. she's also highly trained in combat but it's on a need to know basis.

Hi comma
I'm not a minor, but I know there's a lot of minors in tntblr and I've been on the internet long enough to realize way farther down the line that I've been in very unsafe online environments before.
I guess I'm saying this because of the new information that came out about that cc called kwite. I just keep on thinking about how uncomfortable it sometimes makes me to be in the fandom of such a homoerotic ship and know so many fans are probably only 15 years old. It seems to be really safe so far despite that, and the soap opera you have going on in your inbox is hilarious, but I guess I'm just worried that this could change.
I absolutely wouldn't be surprised if you delete this ask, it's pretty uncalled for. I'm sorry. But I guess I'm sending this ask because I'm still a bit younger than you, and wanted to know if you had advice for staying safe in online communities.
Only if you're okay with answering, of course. I really hope this wasn't too upsetting to read. I love your work, and I really hope you get that surgery you've been waiting on soon. Get well <3
I really do worry abt younger ppl in this fandom bc the internet safety things that were common when I was fifteen are becoming less and less common, so I would actually love to list a few
Do not share personal info, especially in your bio or pinned post and especially if it could be used to track you down irl (e.g. which city you live in, where you go to school, pictures of a local library/coffee shop/restaurant, your birthday, pictures of your face)
Tumblr is different from places like Facebook or Instagram because you are under no obligation to tell anyone your real name or show anyone your real face, you can and should embrace internet anonymity here because it's one of the last major websites where you can do so
Just saying you are a minor is enough (and you don't even have to do that, no one is entitled to know how old you are), you don't have to go out and tell everyone exactly how old you are because that opens the door for weirdos
You will know if something makes you uncomfortable, trust yourself and listen to that instinct. Even if you can't explain why a certain person/fic/art made you feel uncomfortable, listen to that feeling. Trust your gut feelings because they will figure out something is bad long before you figure out if goes against your boundaries in some way. Children are taught to ignore gut feelings like that, "Oh, it's not a big deal, go give your creepy uncle a hug or you're gonna hurt his feelings". But especially on the internet, where you can end up in dangerous or traumatizing territory without even realizing it until it's too late, you need to listen to your first instinct.
Just to harp on the above point a bit, if talking to someone makes you feel anxious, if you ever have to hype yourself up before you go to message a certain friend because sometimes the things they say make you feel weird, if talking to someone ever makes you feel weird about yourself or second guess things, if they ever ask you to do something you're not comfortable with (even if it's not at all sexual!! If you're talking to a mutual, and you mention you broke your foot and they ask to see the cast, if that makes you uncomfortable this still applies) If any of that happens, take a step back. Distance yourself from the person who made you uncomfortable for about a week and reassess how you feel. If there have been other times they've made you feel weird or uncomfortable, block them. It is totally okay and even expected to block people on Tumblr for literally any reason. It is always better safe than sorry. If this is the first time they've made you feel weird, explain the situation to them and establish a boundary. If they break that boundary, then it's blocking time. It might seem harsh, but to cultivate a safe online experience, you have to have safe people around you, and safe people respect boundaries 100% of the time.
tl;dr don't share unnecessary personal information with strangers on the internet, and if anyone makes you uncomfortable for any reason, do not hesitate to block them. You don't owe anyone anything.
And as tntblr's appa, I've gotta put this out there. If you feel unsafe in our online space or you're not sure what to do about something making you uncomfortable, then my dms are an open, judgement-free zone. I will do my best to help you out, and at the very least, I'm a pretty good listener. Sometimes all you need is a sanity sounding board.

I really like a Timestamp for Time Enough for Rocking When We're Old with the prompt "Graduation"
Original fic here!
Bellamy knows that Octavia didn’t pick a college in the Boston area just to delay his impending freakout about her growing up and moving away, but that was a side-effect of Boston College being her favorite place that she visited. It had felt like a good kind of compromise, her leaving the house but not leaving, and Bellamy hadn’t even minded that much. He loves his sister, but he really shouldn’t have had Octavia in the first place. When she left for college, his life fell into the place where it was probably supposed to be: he was a twenty-seven-year-old guy with a good job, a house, and a wife. If anything, he was ahead of the game.
So he was doing well. Octavia was close enough that she came home to do laundry sometimes, but it was mostly just him and Clarke, living in something like domestic bliss. There wasn’t any reason to think that would change, once Octavia finished college.
It’s about a month before said finishing of college when she says, “Hey, I got a job.”
“Yeah? Awesome, congrats. That’s amazing.”
“Right? It’s a one-year gig teaching English in Japan, but if I like it I can extend my contract for longer.”
Bellamy’s heart stops. “What?”
“Did I not tell you I was applying for that?”
“O–”
“It’s a job, and a cool one! I get a place to live and I get to see a whole new part of the world. How is that not awesome?”
“If you really thought I’d think it was awesome, you would have told me.”
“Just because you don’t think it’s good, that doesn’t mean you’re right. I knew you wouldn’t like it, but I didn’t want to have this fight unless I actually got it. Which I did.”
There’s an undeniable logic to it, not that it helps. His paranoid overprotectiveness is something his sister can plan around, something she has to factor into whatever she tells him. How many things must she have thought about doing that he doesn’t know about because she didn’t trust him not to blow up?
“You did,” he agrees, releasing his breath on a long exhalation. “And you’re excited?”
“Yeah.”
“Okay. Tell me why, so I get it.”
And to be fair to Octavia, she’s not lacking in reasons. She’s never left Boston and has always wanted to travel, she actually kind of likes teaching, and she wanted to see what it was like to be on her own without completely giving up a safety net. She looked into dozens of programs, compared them, and applied to a bunch, but this was her favorite, and she got in.
The least he can do is be happy for her.
“Sorry,” he says, soft. “That you couldn’t tell me.”
“I learned my lesson from the college conversation. Don’t get me wrong, I loved BC, but every time I talked about liking anywhere out of town, you shut down.”
Bellamy doesn’t remember it like that, but he’s never had as good a poker face as he thinks he does. He goes blank and thinks that will solve the problem, but his sister knows what a blank face means. He wasn’t fooling her.
“I know it takes me some time to get used to–I just want you to be happy. I’ll get over myself.”
“I know,” she says, her tone an eyeroll. “You haven’t stopped me doing anything I want to do, Bell. I just don’t tell you everything all the time.”
“I guess that’s probably fine. Did you tell Clarke?”
“Some, not everything. I told her I got this first so she’d be ready for your freakout.”
“You know you don’t have to manage my emotions for me, right?”
“I don’t do it for you, I do it for me. I want to minimize having to fight with you. Don’t act like you don’t do it too.”
She’s right, of course. He picks and chooses his fights with his sisters as much as he can, avoids it as much as possible, which is most of the time, these days. He doesn’t need to run his every decision by his sister, not even most of them.
“I know I do,” he tells her. “When do you leave?”
“A week after graduation.”
“Congrats. I’m really happy for you.”
“Thanks. I’m so excited,” she admits, sounding like a giddy little girl, excitement gushing out. “I can’t wait.”
He’s not going to miss out on these conversations; he doesn’t want her to have to weigh whether or not it’s worth the fight to tell him what’s going on in her life. He’s going to deal with this, be better.
So he goes to Clarke, sinks down next to her on the couch and puts his head in her lap with a sigh.
“Octavia told you?”
“Yeah.”
“You okay?”
“I feel like an asshole.”
“If it helps, she’s twenty-two, which is how old I was when I wasn’t telling my mom that I was marrying some random guy I found on craigslist. So you could be doing a lot worse.”
“Jesus,” he says, with a soft laugh. “I can’t believe we did that. O’s way too young to get married.”
“We weren’t really getting married. I didn’t think it was going to last.”
“It shouldn’t have.” He takes her left hand, turning it over to look at the rings on her finger. The first is still his grandmother’s, but he bought her another on their fifth anniversary, a plain gold band, but it matches, makes the engagement ring look like part of a set. He never gets tired of seeing them on her, the tangible proof of their marriage, modified and improved after years together.
“I guess going to Japan for a year is a less major life decision than getting married to a stranger.”
“If she doesn’t like it, she can get out of it easier, yeah.” She gives his hand a squeeze when he lets go of the ring. “Do you want me to distract you?”
He frowns. “That doesn’t sound like a come-on.”
“It’s not, no. I have news.”
He straightens up, frowning. “News? What kind of news?”
“I’m pregnant.”
It’s somehow not a total surprise and a complete shock at the same time. They’d talked about the possibility of kids a few months back, at Christmas, and decided that they could handle having some, and they could start trying, and if Clarke wasn’t pregnant by the next Christmas, they would reassess. If he’s honest, Bellamy had been assuming that would happen, without any good reason. When he was younger, he was convinced he’d gotten someone pregnant every time he had sex, no matter how much protection they used, but somehow marriage had him convinced that trying to get pregnant would never work.
“Holy shit,” he breathes. “Really?”
“According to the test I bought, yeah.”
“When did you buy it?”
“This morning, when you were in the shower. I went around the block to CVS.”
That stops him short. “Why then? Why didn’t you tell me?”
She buries her face against his shoulder. “Honestly? I felt kind of stupid even buying it. I know it doesn’t make sense, but I couldn’t believe I was right. I didn’t want to tell you until I took the test. I know it doesn’t make sense.”
“No,” he says, smiling and kissing her hair. “That makes total sense. I just, uh–after the thing with Octavia, I was kind of worried you didn’t tell me because you didn’t want me to overreact.”
She kisses his shoulder. “No, I don’t do that. I’m not Octavia, don’t worry. I tell you stuff. I would have told you if the test had been negative, too, I just–I needed to know first. If I was right or not.”
“And you were.” He exhales. “And you’re pregnant.”
“I’m pregnant. Probably like–seven weeks along, maybe? I don’t know. I missed two periods, so something around that, but we’ll have to go to a doctor to be sure.”
“I really didn’t think it was going to work,” he admits. “Not this soon, anyway.”
“It did feel kind of theoretical, yeah. It’s weird that you can decide you’re ready to maybe have kids and just start trying and then–that’s it. Not that this is–it could be a false positive, and it’s still pretty early, and–”
Bellamy tugs her closer, gives her hair a kiss. “Breathe. Are you happy about this? You don’t have to be.”
“I am.” She laughs, a strange, disbelieving kind of laugh. “I think I was just so focused on reminding myself that it wasn’t going to happen overnight and I needed to be patient that I wasn’t thinking about it actually happening, you know?”
“I definitely know.” He lets out a breath. “Okay, so, uh–pregnancy. That’s happening. Let’s say you’re eight weeks along, that means we’ve got about thirty weeks to go, which is–seven and a half months? And the baby’s due in October or November?”
“Something like that. I’ll call the doctor on Monday and set up an appointment, and then we’ll get more information.” She groans. “Fuck, I’m going to have to stop drinking.”
“We’re going to have to clear out the computer room and make it into a nursery.”
“To be fair, no one has a computer room anymore,” she teases. “Not even us. It’s just storage.”
“Which means there’s way more to clear out than there would have been if we just had a computer in there.”
Clarke’s smile is still growing. “Remember when you tried to convince me I could live in there?”
“Your standards were just way too high. I figured anyone who was marrying some guy on craigslist to save on rent would be happy to get whatever room I had. And wouldn’t actually want to share with me.”
“Instead you got me,” she says. “And your kid’s going to be the one who gets the room.”
“Fuck,” he says, dropping his head back onto the couch. “Our kid. We’re actually having a kid.”
“Assuming everything goes well. It’s still early, so–”
“Yeah.” He laughs. “Fuck.”
“We don’t have to keep it.”
“No, that’s not what I–I just can’t believe it. Unless, uh–do you want to keep it?” he asks, a little belatedly.
“Yeah, I do. I think I was just expecting more of a break between Octavia leaving and us having another kid.”
“She’s leaving in a month,” he points out. “We’ll have a while between that and the baby.”
“Spoken like the guy who isn’t going to be growing a human inside him for that whole time.”
“Good point. But we’re doing this.”
She rests her head on his shoulder. “We’re doing this.”
*
In theory, Bellamy shouldn’t actually need anything to distract him at the end of the semester. The end of the semester is basically hell for him, and the fact that he’s thinking of AP exams as something that’s distracting him from Octavia leaving and Clarke’s pregnancy is actually kind of worrying. AP exams are supposed to be the worst part of every spring.
And in a way, of course, it is the worst part. In no universe is his wife’s pregnancy bad, let alone his sister graduating college with a good job she’s excited about. That’s all awesome, and in some ways not nearly as stressful as the end of the semester and wondering how his kids are going to do on their tests.
But at least with the tests, he feels like he has some degree of control. The kids are the ones taking the actual exams, but he gets to prep them and answer their questions and he has a good idea of what success looks like. It’s largely out of his control, but he resent them if they fuck up.
It’s not pleasant, but it’s not an existential issue, and that makes it a novel distraction.
Unfortunately, it only lasts into mid-May, and then the tests are over and the distraction is just gone, the relief he usually feels when exams are done immediately eaten up by anxiety about the baby he can’t even tell is there yet, this kid who might not actually make it to being born.
So he calls his sister.
“You’re calling me?” she asks, frown audible in her voice. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing’s actually wrong. I’m freaking out and I figure you’re an adult now, so I should talk to you about it before I do something stupid.”
“Let me guess, you googled something about my new job and you think I’m going to die. Did you check Snopes? It’s probably bullshit.”
“No, it’s not that. It’s, uh–Clarke is pregnant.”
He did tell Clarke he was telling O, so it’s not like he’s doing anything wrong, but it feels a little anticlimactic, a little risky. It should be a big deal, and they should be telling her later, when it’s less likely to jinx it. They should go out to dinner and make a production of it, but there will be time to do that later. Clarke’s pregnancy isn’t going anywhere.
“Congratulations. Are you not happy? I feel like you should be happy.”
“I don’t want to let myself be happy yet. I’m thinking about everything that could go wrong. There’s so much.”
Octavia pauses. “Oh wow, yeah. This must be like a pretty major crisis for you, huh? Like–pregnancy is a minefield.”
“Pretty much.”
“So why are you telling me?”
He runs a hand through his hair. “I’m asking you for a favor.”
“What kind of favor?”
“I want you to let me stress out about you so I won’t be worrying about the baby.”
Another long pause, and then she laughs. “Seriously, Bell?”
“I think it would help.”
“It would help you.”
“Yeah, we’re talking about me.”
“What do you even have to worry about? With me, I mean. It’s an established program with a good reputation. This is, like, really normal. Not a crisis.”
“I can find something. I’m really good at worrying.”
“But you don’t want to be worrying about Clarke.”
“I don’t need to do anything else to stress her out. We’re already going to be–there’s so much that can go wrong, I don’t need to be dwelling on it.”
“So you want my permission to find stuff to worry about with me so that you and Clarke won’t end up in some stupid stress spiral.”
“There’s only so much we can do to avoid that. But yeah, I want to get it as under control as I can, so–”
“You know how weird this is, right?”
“I do, yeah. You’re an adult now, right? That means you get involved in adult conversations, like how having a baby is scary and I’m going to be melting down for the next eight months. And that’s assuming everything goes well.”
“You know, you sounded less worried about marrying a stranger from craigslist than you do about having a baby with her.”
“Marriage is less of a commitment than a baby.”
She goes quiet again, and this is the time it occurs to him how rare that is, how encouraging. His sister is actually thinking things over, measuring her responses, taking care. She really is growing up.
“I really thought you were ruining your life for me, you know. When you and Clarke got married.”
“I know. You told me.”
“Yeah, but I never felt like you got it. I didn’t know how to explain it.”
“Sorry?”
“No, it’s just–I don’t know. You’re having a baby, and it should be the best news ever, and you’re telling me you need me to be your distraction. You need to work on appropriate emotional responses.”
“I’m happy. Jesus, O. I’m so happy I don’t know how to be this happy. I’m not going to figure it out until I’m holding the baby, and maybe not even then. I’m not supposed to be this lucky.”
“Okay,” she says, in her most authoritative, decisive tone. “Here’s what we’re doing. I’ve got another week of classes and then exams, so I need to get through those. Feel free to read every horror story you can about Americans getting stabbed abroad. Pretend I’m going to another country if it helps. And then once I’m done and on my way to Japan, I’ll send you updates on how I’m doing that you can’t verify that are full of red flags.”
“You’re going to send me fake crises?” he asks.
“Yup. Nothing that bad, always stuff I can deal with, but something you can fret about as much or as little as you need to.”
“Is it bad that that sounds really good to me right now?”
“It’s like subscribing to one of those puzzle of a day things, but specially tailored to your neuroses.”
“Thanks, O. Really.”
“If making up stories is going to help you get through this pregnancy, it’s the least I can do. Is Clarke there? Can I talk to her?”
“She’s in the other room. I can get her.”
“Yeah, I want to tell her congratulations and make sure she’s doing okay. See if she needs any weird services from me.”
“You actually turned out all right, huh?”
“I tried, anyway. Really, though,” she says, serious. “Congratulations. You guys are going to be awesome parents.”
“We worked all the kinks out on you, so–”
“So you’ve got this.”
It’s not exactly easy to believe, but it’s getting easier.
“Yeah,” he says. “Somehow.”
*
“Is this Octavia thing going to help you too, or am I the only one with that specific hangup?”
Clarke has her head in his lap as she reads, which is nice, and Bellamy can’t help letting his eyes stray to her stomach, even though her pregnancy being obvious at this point would actually be a huge red flag. It’s not like he actually expects to see anything, just the knowledge that a few cells will be a living, breathing human in under a year in there is almost unreal.
He remembers his mother being pregnant, of course. He was old enough when Octavia was born that he followed a lot of it, helped out when Aurora was achy or cranky or needed some obscure food from the store. But he hadn’t really cared much about Octavia until he saw her, until she was this little, wrinkly thing staring up at him in awe. That was when he had a sister.
Children, apparently, kick in earlier.
“She did ask if I wanted her to do anything for me.”
“And?”
“And keeping you distracted is a public service.”
He kisses her forehead. “I haven’t been that bad, right?”
“No, you haven’t.” She grins. “Your paranoia about worrying means you’re really holding back on stressing.”
“Good for me. You don’t need anything?”
“I told Octavia she should send me updates without any lies in them so I can give you answers if you’re worrying too much.”
“Probably a good idea. But you know you can tell me how you’re feeling too. I’m not too far gone to help with whatever you’re going through.”
“I’m trying to be fine,” she says, with a determination that makes him smile. “Nothing bad has even happened yet. If we start overthinking now, we’ll melt down before the end of the first trimester.”
“So how are you avoiding it?”
“For one thing, I don’t have summers off and I’m not worried Octavia is going to die.”
“And that helps?”
“You’ve got two big changes and no distractions. Which is why I liked the Octavia plan.”
“Because I’m going to distract myself from one crisis with another one?”
Clarke smiles. “The two crises being your sister graduating from college and the baby we’re excited to be having?”
“That would be them, yeah. I know it’s stupid.”
“It’s a lot of change all at once. I was hoping the baby was going to help, but I should have known it was too much.”
“I feel shitty that I’ve just been stressing non-stop since you got pregnant.”
“I get it. You were going to be stressing non-stop about this anyway, the pregnancy is just the icing on the cake. But you’ll get over this hump in a few weeks.”
“You think?”
“As soon as I start having actual pregnancy symptoms and we have real information about how the baby is doing, you’re going to be fine.”
“Yeah, that’s true.”
“And once Octavia goes to Japan and doesn’t die.”
“I know. I just–”
“It’s a lot.”
“It’s good. I should be happy.”
“You are,” she says, with reassuring confidence. “Right?”
That’s less reassuring. But the answer is still easy. “Incredibly. My life is amazing.”
“Your brain just needs to catch up. It’ll get there.”
“And you’re good,” he says. “You’re not keeping anything else quiet because I can’t handle it, right? Because I could.”
“I’m not. I’m nervous, but you know that. Mostly we’re waiting. And I’m glad you’re outsourcing your stress to Octavia.”
“Yeah, me too. I figured she’d be pissed, but she actually sounded kind of excited about making up lies to try and fool me into thinking her life sucks.”
“I think she’s going to be really good at it.”
“Me too.” He sighs. “She really is growing up, huh.”
“She is. And it’s good. We’re going to need her room in a couple years. The baby’s going to grow out of the computer room in no time.”
It seems unthinkable right now, that they’ll not only have a child, but that said child will get bigger and bigger, until they take over Octavia’s room, until they won’t want to be in the house at all. Somehow, in less that twenty-five years, Bellamy is going to be doing this all over again, worrying about what his kid is going to do after they finish college.
“Yeah,” he agrees. “They grow up so fast.”
*
By the time Octavia is actually graduating, Bellamy’s gotten his head screwed on straight enough to be unreservedly proud and happy for her. It should have been a pretty easy bar to clear, of course, but, as Clarke said, he had a stressful month. He had a lot to process in not a lot of time.
Not that Octavia graduating was actually a surprise, but Japan was an unexpected twist, and even without that, it was always going to be a lot. This is his baby sister, all grown up and ready to take on the world.
Both more and less literally than he was expecting; teaching abroad is a pretty lowkey occupation, relatively speaking. She could be doing something way more dangerous and combative. She could have decided join the army or become a professional bodyguard and he wouldn’t actually have been surprised. But instead, she’s going to another country, having a fucking adventure.
It’s exactly the kind of thing she felt bad he couldn’t have done because he had her, and the second he has the thought, a weight lifts off his shoulders and pieces slide together.
The relief must be visible, because Clarke asks, “Are you okay?”
“I just figured out it’s good Octavia is leaving.”
“Wow, it only took a month and a half,” she teases, but her voice and smile are warm. “What happened?”
“Even before my mom died, I was always–I felt like I was responsible for Octavia, for taking care of the family. That I couldn’t just have my own life. I didn’t raise O feeling like that. She can just go off and do whatever she wants. Plus, she’s kind of following in my footsteps. Teaching.”
Clarke leans her head on his shoulder with a smile. “She is. You did a good job, Bellamy.”
“You helped.”
“I came in when she was pretty much raised and helped get you over the finish line. I’ll take partial credit, but she was pretty much set before I came along. You’re a good–family member, I guess. That’s part of why I married you. I knew that no matter what happened or how everything turned out, you were loyal and kind, and you’d treat me well even if the whole marriage blew up in our faces. That’s what made you a good brother, what makes you a good husband, and what’s going to make you a good father.”
“How long have you been waiting to tell me that one?” he asks, putting his arm around her and kissing her hair.
“Since about a month after we met. It’s pretty obvious.”
“But not always relevant.” The music starts up, indicating the graduates are coming soon, and he lets out a breath. “I still can’t believe this is happening.”
“Which part?”
“Any of it. My whole life since you told me you wanted to marry me in that coffee shop has seemed fake. And all this stuff–I was so fucking scared everything would go wrong, and everything went right instead.”
“Things have gone wrong,” Clarke points out, not incorrectly. “But yeah, the general arc of our lives is skewing good, getting better. We got lucky.”
It really is something.
“Yeah.” He kisses her hair, disentangles himself so he can join the crowd looking for the graduates. This is his sister’s day, after all; he and Clarke can be sappy any time. “We really did.”

Cats, Children, and Comfortable: 72246-3 years old, 52 lb atum Super cute, friendly outgoing, loose &tail- waggy with handlers, tived in harmony with another dog ATBROOKLYNACO WATTING FOR A GOOD HOME TO BE KILLED - 8/22/2019 ADORABLE BABY-FACED TATUM has the face of a puppy but he's actually 3 years old. Tatum was once chosen to become a part of a family. He was adored, promised forever, and then abandoned without the slightest consideration. Tatum was so delighted to belong, to cherish, protect and serve. He lived in harmony with his family and sought approval from the home he thought would always reciprocate his unconditional love. Forever to a doggie means forever till their last breathe, and though they don’t live that long, each moment spent is done so with only tenderness, and affection toward their family and we're pretty certain this was the case for adorable Tatum. The tragedy here is that despite betrayal, Tatum (like most dogs) continues to love the home that discarded him and would stop at nothing for them. The beauty in this tragedy is the pureness of Tatum's heart to love again. This is why he deserves a loving home who will not renege on this promise. Tatum is out of time today and badly in need of second chance in a good home. Please help us share this cutie so he isn't overlooked. TATUM@BROOKLYN ACC Hello, my name is Tatum My animal id is #72246 I am a male tan dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center The shelter thinks I am about 3 years old, 52 lb Came into shelter as ACO impound 8/10/2019 Tatum is rescue only Tatum was placed at risk due to behavioral concerns; Although he has shown some improvement, Tatum remains overall aloof and fearful during his interactions in the care center. Place with a New Hope partner: Although he has shown some improvement, Tatum remains overall aloof and fearful during his interactions in the care center. Due to these observations, combined with the intensity of his resource guarding behavior, we feel he would be best set up to succeed if placed with an experienced rescue partner who can help manage these behaviors and decompress in a more stable environment, prior to seeking permanent placement. Force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing or exposing Tatum to new and unfamiliar situations, as well as utilizing guidance from a qualified, professional trainer/behaviorist. Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: During his assessment, Tatum displayed resource guarding behavior when introduced to a plush squeaky toy where he was observed to tense, lunge, growl and bite. Tatum refocused readily and traded for high value treats. Please refer to the handout for Resource guarding Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Although Tatum has shown some improvement and accepts some contact, he remains fearful when introduced or exposed to new situations where he has been observed to be wary of interacting, displays a tense body and hard stares toward staff. Tatum has escalated to hard barking and snapping when uncomfortable (observed during his initial medical exam and while in his kennel). Tatum should never be forced to interact or approach if he is not comfortable and positive association should be paired with anything he displays fear toward. Please refer to the handout for Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Anxiety: On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Tatum exhibits on-leash reactivity/barrier frustration during his interactions in the care center, where he has been observed to lunge and hard bark toward novel dogs. This behavior has been observed when removing him from his kennel and during his playgroup interactions (SEE DOG-DOG SUMMARY). Please refer to the handout for on-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Strength/leash pulling: Tatum was observed to display leash pulling due to his strength. Please refer to the handout on Strength/leash pulling. The Oxford Classical Dictionary Simon Hornblower (first published 1949)
For more than half a century, the Oxford Classical Dictionary has been the unrivaled one-volume reference work on the Greco-Roman world. Whether one is interested in literature or art, philosophy or law, mythology or science, intimate details of daily life or broad cultural and historical trends, the OCD is the first place to turn for clear, authoritative information on all aspects of ancient culture.
Greek History: The Basics Robin Osborne (2004).
A very short, compressed primer on Greek history from the Dark Age up to the Roman conquest, written by one of the top experts.
Ancient Greece: A History in Eleven Cities Cartledge, Paul Anthony ( 2009)
Designed for a non-expert audience, but again by a top expert, this book uses a series of microhistories to tell a story of Greece’s history from the Dark Age to the Byzantine Empire.
𝗟𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘇𝗲 𝗔𝗴𝗲 (𝗰𝗮. 𝟭𝟲𝟬𝟬 𝘁𝗼 𝟭𝟮𝟬𝟬 𝗕𝗖𝗘)
The Aegean Bronze Age Dickinson, Oliver ( 1994)
A comprehensive synthesis of a wide range of data, useful for beginners and researchers alike.
The End of the Bronze Age: Changes in Warfare and the Catastrophe Ca. 1200 B.C. — Third Edition Drews, Robert ( 1993)
This is the only halfway decent book on the Bronze Age collapse that affected Greece, Anatolia, and Syria. Drews’ rebuttal of some widely-accepted theories on the collapse is the most useful part. His own argument, that the collapse was caused by changes in military practice, is much less useful (though his theory is at least no worse than its competitors).
𝗗𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗔𝗴𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗱 (𝟭𝟮𝟬𝟬 𝘁𝗼 𝟰𝟳𝟵 𝗕𝗖𝗘)
Archaic Period (c. 800- 479 BCE), Greek Dark Ages c. 1100 — c. 800 BC
Archaic Greece: The Age of Experiment by Snodgrass, Anthony ( 1980)
A classic book: though it has been superceded in some ways, this can probably be regarded as embodying the conservative orthodoxy on the period.
The Trojans and their Neighbours Trevor Bryce (2006)
Though focused on Troy, this is currently the best book that deals with the relationship between Bronze Age Greeks and the peoples of Anatolia.
Greece in the Making 1200–479 BC Osborne, Robin ( 1996)
One of the definitive surveys of Dark Age and Archaic Greece.
A Companion to Archaic Greece Kurt Raaflaub and Hans van Wees (2009).
A thorough guide with over thirty chapters written by world experts.
(TEXTBOOK) A History of the Archaic Greek World: ca. 1200–479 BCE by Hall, Jonathan ( 2006)
Another of the definitive histories of Dark Age and Archaic Greece, by one of the greatest living historians of the period.
“Scholars as well as students of historical practice and specialists in Greek history will find this book indispensable … Highly recommended.” (Choice)
“Very attractive physical appearance … an extensive bibliography and index. Hall’s style is clear and crisp … .The book is to be recommended.” (Canadian Journal of History)
𝗖𝗟𝗔𝗦𝗦𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗟 𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗢𝗗 (𝟰𝟳𝟵 𝗧𝗢 𝟯𝟮𝟯 𝗕𝗖𝗘)
(upper-level undergraduates textbook) A History of the Classical Greek World: 478–323 BC P.J. Rhodes (2006).
Partner to Jonathan Hall’s textbook on Archaic Greece, listed above. Both provide accessible and up-to-date overviews of the period they cover.
“A leading authority on Athens, Rhodes has written a superbnarrative of Classical Greece for upper-level undergraduates:lucid, concise, and balanced. Welcome additions to the secondedition are chapters on life and culture, and brief selections fromcontemporary sources.”
(undergraduates textbook) The Greek World 479–323 BC Hornblower, Simon ( 1983)
A frequently used overview, written by a top scholar. Hornblower also pays a nice amount of attention to cities other than Athens and Sparta.
`To write a standard history which contains the essential material and yet is interesting and says things which have not been said before is one of the hardest tasks. Hornblower has performed it excellently.’ — Times Literary Supplement
`Packed with worthwhile ideas and impressive erudition. It will stimulate thought’. — David Whitehead, Classical Review
`An undergraduate text book which neither the professional ancient historian can afford to ignore nor the interested non specialist fail to read with profit and pleasure’ — History Today
𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗱 (𝟯𝟮𝟯 𝘁𝗼 𝟯𝟭 𝗕𝗖𝗘)
(TEXTBOOK) The Greek World After Alexander 323–30 BC by Shipley, Graham ( 1999)
An introduction to the Hellenistic Period. For more in-depth detail, the researcher will still need to go to Peter Green’s enormous Alexander to Actium (1990).
“the seventh volume to appear in Routledge ‘History of the Ancient World’ series is clearly and sensibly written, has an excellent and original selection of tables, maps, diagrams, and photographs, and provides and thorough, reliable, and up-to-date introduction to key topics. — Zofia H. Archibald, University of Liverpool.”
(TEXBOOK) Thundering Zeus: The Making of Hellenistic Bactria by Holt, Frank L. ( 1999)
A good introduction to Greek culture outside of its traditional homelands, and more specifically Greek cultures of the Hellenistic era. Well researched, and highly current.
A Companion to the Hellenistic World by Erskine, Andrew ( 2003)
A thorough guide with nearly thirty chapters written by world experts.
Alexander the Great in His World by Thomas, Carol G. ( 2006)
A fairly academic but very good biography of Alexander.
“An engaging and persuasive book, which offers a newperspective … .It will maintain the interest of specialists… yet remain accessible to the general reader.”Canadian Journal of History
𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗰𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗼𝗺𝗲 (𝟭𝟰𝟲 𝗕𝗖𝗘 𝘁𝗼 𝟯𝟵𝟱 𝗖𝗘)
Troy Between Greece and Rome: Local Tradition and Imperial Power by Erskine, Andrew ( 2001)
In this book Andrew Erskine examines the role and meaning of Troy in the changing relationship between Greeks and Romans, as Rome is transformed from a minor Italian city into a Mediterranean superpower. The book seeks to understand the significance of Rome’s Trojan origins for the Greeks by considering the place of Troy and Trojans in Greek culture. It moves beyond the more familiar spheres of art and literature to explore the countless, overlapping, local traditions, the stories that cities told about themselves, a world often neglected by scholars.
“A detailed and spirited sifting of evidence.” — Times Higher Education Supplement
Greek Literature and the Roman Empire: The Politics of Imitation by Whitmarsh, Tim ( 2002)
Greek Literature and the Roman Empire uses up-to-date literary and cultural theory to explore the phenomenal rise of interest in literary writing in Greece under the Roman Empire. Greek identity cannot be properly understood without appreciating the brilliant sophistication of the writers of the period, whose texts must be considered in the historical and cultural context of the battles for identity that raged under the vast, multicultural Roman Empire.
“An important contribution to the study of the so-called ‘Second Sophistic’ period…. Whitmarsh offers illuminating and provocative readings of texts both familiar and less known.” — Choice
Local Knowledge and Microidentities in the Imperial Greek World by Whitmarsh, Tim ( 2010)
“The nine chapters, whose authors represent an all-star cast of thinkers about this period, are all innovative and well-written.” Bryn Mawr Classical Review

Perhaps the finest recent introduction to the topic; up-to-date and comprehensive.

A comprehensive reassessment of how and why Greeks fought pitched battles.

So today has been more challenging with food. Which is great bc I am able to get feedback from my body, check in with my goals/values, and use this information to help guide future decisions. I often ten to do the following:
1. Guilt myself for feeling full or sick, rest in guilt. Instead now, gently ask my body for feedback and thank her for it! She’s so smart and has my best interest,
2. Feel guilt/wreck less with $. Now, I can reassess my values and see what is worth spending my $ on. Was the ice cream or gingerbread with it? Not really as my other “primary foods” (aka, hobbies, interests, values the real things that bring me joy and that I will remember on my deathbed matter more, feeling so comfortable in my body that I can truly be present with those I love). I value owning a home someday too!! More than cake & ice cream ha.
3. Feel like shit that I will feel to full at dinner or the pressure to eat something healthy, But, I don’t have to eat dinner. I can relieve myself of pressure wand allow my body to decide!!
4. Feel like shit then then to food again to not feel like shit (seek pleasure or comfort). Now I can realize and know that my body doesn’t need food for comfort. Or pleasure bc I can ask her what she truly needs and how else I can give her those some feel good feelings - a book, empowering/gentle/warm podcast, bath, puzzle. This isn’t to distract me from eating it’s too nurture my anxiety (that’s causing me to eats/numb) feel the difference? ❤️
5. Feel like “gosh dang it intutive eating doesn’t “work” I’m gonna be out of control around food again. Now, I can choose my reality and what to believe. I know nothing else “works” I’ve tried and seen it all. It’s ok to “fall off” bc it’s not falling off at all, it’s just my body giving me feedback!! Just like my body heals itself with cuts, it’s giving me feedback (stomach ache for ex) as signals to care for her. And, my body wants homeostasis, which she will get! I will not self sabotage.
6. I’m gonna be fat. And stuffed always. I don’t need these thoughts anymore bc they don’t. Serve me. I can be anything I want, I want to be “in control” around food, I want to feel good in my body. I want to enjoy more around. Me other than food. I can have all that by engaging more with my loved ones, my hobbies, being present with them. It’s my reality. I can listen more deeply to my body as I grow this relationship with her.
Personal story, when I was younger I didn’t choose going out to eat bc I valued saving money. I valued that more than food and I ate whatever I wanted and had a truly healthy relationship with food for the most part. I like that mindset and can have the same mindset now too! I enjoy eating ice creams and getting cofeee but truly $ on my primary foods is more worthwhile to be honest!! This idea that coffee every am made me happy was me reaching for an external source of comfort that Truly didn’t serve me or make my body feel that good!?
NEXT POST: Mindless snacking around new foods! For example, making dehydrated fruit, I ended up snacking so much and it wasn’t even that good or feel the greatest. But I wanted to try it! It was new and so many different varieties and textures to explore and eventually share with others. Tips and recommendations for navigating these moments and afterwards?
Convo with friend regards the topic of ice cream from tonight
Yes! My ice cream was yummy! But all food is neutral so the feedback I am taking from it, “yes it was nice to finally try the flavors I has been eyeing. But it’s also nice to save my money towards the things I really value and my “primary foods” (friends, hobbies like biking, etc) that really bring me happiness and align with my values!
I am bummed too bc I think dinner sounds better but now I’m not as hungry. I will remember this next time I see ice cream. Is this what you want to eat this evening? (Vs right now) meaning, will I enjoy it now? And will I be satisfied with that being my only food for tonight since I might crave some nutrients and substance tonight? And to pause, feel calm, and make a decision for my evening vs the moment. I’m glad I did it! It’s feedback and a check off my wishlist and more information about why eating well feels so good!!
Another empowering feeling is I don’t have To eat anything now that it’s “dinner”. I don’t need to feel pressure of what I should or shouldn’t eat. Ex. I should eat something healthy now, or it’s dinner so I should eat. Andrew is eating so I should. I can relieve myself of this pressure by allowing my amazing and intelligent body tell me. She had my best interest so let her guide !!!!!!

Meeting The Stars - PRABHAS  &  RANA
From the moment I got back home after watching Baahubali: The Beginning, I wished to meet the entire team behind the Epic because one, they were ideals in my mind for attempting something of such an impressive magnitude and coming out successful; and two, they seemed so fun to get to know after all their interviews together despite the heights of their fandom. It was indeed a dream team and my dream to meet them got a lot more stubborn after watching The Conclusion.
So last May, on a fine Friday morning, I came across a tweet about a contest regarding Baahubali the Lost Legends—the animated series of the franchise on Amazon Prime India twitter handle. It promised two sets of winners, the first three would get to meet the stars and the next ten would win certain Baahubali merchandise. My eyes zeroed in on the promise of those gifts cause I consider myself as a bit of a collector. I decided to give my best shot at it hoping to win at least one of them goody bags. I answered all the nine questions about the animated series. They promised to announce the winners that night and I almost forgot all about it until after dinner. When I did though, I rushed to see who won the goody bags and didn’t find my name so made peace with the thought that it just wasn’t meant for me. And not 5 minutes later, they announced the 3 winners who will go on to meet the Baahubali stars on top of getting the merchandise as well and my name was right on top of it—and I’m pretty sure I kept blinking owlishly at my mobile screen for 10 minutes straight. I legit couldn’t believe my luck and I thought it was a prank until everyone assured me it wasn’t. With what one would term a Cheshire grin, I danced around my place and kept shoving my mobile at everyone’s face (the ones who made the mistake of listening to me, that is). Friends who had me as their whatsapp contact were subsequent victims to my excitement as well. However, my mum and brother were an exception as they tried to tease me, mercilessly might I add, about my pintsize and how either Rana or Prabhas might have to lift me up so that I was in the same frame as them in the pictures—tried being the key word. It still had zero effect on my delight and I eagerly waited for the day that I would meet the team. (rest under the cut bc its super long)
Two months later, the day finally came. It was a Friday once again. On the morning of 21st July, I flew to Hyderabad with all my excitement swapped with a sense of restlessness. The moment was finally upon me and you can’t blame the jitters. I was all— What would they be like? What should I tell/ask them? How long was the meet and greet for? Should I write down the questions I had for them? And yada yada yada. Five minutes after touchdown at Hyderabad, Cheryl (from Amazon) called me to tell me that the talents were coming earlier than planned and I should be on my way to the hotel ASAP. The day before, she had informed me that I was going to meet Prabhas & Rana. So, instead of slowly wandering like originally planned, I rushed out of the airport and thankfully found the cab driver who was waiting to pick me up under ten minutes and we were on our way.
Now, I have a habit of striking up conversations with taxi drivers to fill in the silence (because of all the Ubers I’m used to back in UK). As soon as I get in the car, I start with something neutral like ‘Where are you from? How long have you been here? How much you like the place?’ and the talk just flows after that. It always leaves me with a gratified feeling when I step out of the vehicle and thank them genuinely before bidding goodbye. I couldn’t resist and asked the driver all these questions in the little Telugu I could manage and he started speaking about the city, its uniqueness and all the special places to visit. Once he knew I was an architect by profession, he went on to explain the construction history of the intercity elevated expressway we were passing over that moment. And by the time we reached the hotel, I was pretty much convinced that Hyderabad had one of the best infrastructures in the nation and forgot all about my earlier jitters from the flight. He informed me he’d come to pick me up the next day as well to take me back to the airport for my return flight and I happily waved him away before ambling inside the hotel lobby in search of Cheryl. Thankfully, she found me and after a quick check-in, whisked me away along with Sagar (one of the other two winners) to the place where we’d be meeting the stars. There we were joined by the third winner Abhishek and a tiny amount of waiting later (barely ten minutes tops), by the two men themselves.
Until then, I swear by all Gods, the gravity of the moment hadn’t sunk in to me. I was in a calm and happy daze till I heard their cheerful hellos in the next room. My excitement doubled, but my voice turned to that of a squeak (like my mum often says) as I lost my calm and all the restlessness from the flight returned back full force. Abhi and Sagar were in a similar state as me while the organizers took a minute to explain to the two stars about the contest and more, before I was ushered out to go meet them first (bakra feeling, anyone?). Introductions happened in a blink and all I could do now is picture myself slowly toddling into the other room like a lost little sheep blinded by the spotlights set up by the filming crew. However, I’m certain that my flummoxed look turned into a grateful smile when I saw Prabhas standing up first with his hand held out in greeting. Bless that man, my respect for him instantly soared sky high. “Hi,” I piped up meekly as I placed my hand in his and a tiny stutter later, “—I’m Sharme.” He was a darling though, just like his nickname and with a generous smile shook my hand as he replied, “Nice to meet you Sharme!”
My next stop on self-introduction train was Rana, who was standing right behind Prabhas. Now this guy is something else altogether okay, but in a good way. He is a sweetheart and undoubtedly a big goof ball, who can pull you out of your edginess with few simple words (unconsciously on his part I guess). I shuffled towards him with my hand held out and repeated the exact same thing I told his friend. Without missing a beat, he took my hand and warmly stated, “And hi, I’m Rana!” I blinked up as I thought, yeah right Captain Obvious! Despite the sarcasm, I couldn’t control my bubbling laughter and straightaway forgot all about my earlier concerns. What an effective way to break the ice as well as the barriers between celebrity and their admirers, right? Extra brownie points for Rana-man!
Also, I need to mention this here — I might have very well introduced myself as, “Hello, I’m tiny!” because I had my neck craned up high throughout the exchange. Wearing my flattest shoes was both a blessing and a curse. I didn’t fall flat on my face thankfully, but I felt dwarfed standing there between them both for a picture and although I had prepared myself to tell them many things, the first to slip out of my lips was, “Oh God! I’m so tiny next to you guys!” I even suggested that I climb the couch behind us but they laughed it off saying they’d rather sit down than let me do all of those stunts. Such fine gentlemen at their cheeky best, yep. It must be in my fate or something cause I always end up getting teased every time I meet a celebrity. (pout)
Couple of pictures later, we were joined by Abhi and Sagar as well, and thus more chatting/teasing ensued. All three of us were kind of stumped for words as our brains had probably short circuited and was still on its way to mend, so when Rana started speaking we were more than happy to tag along. The very first thing they asked us was how much we liked the movies and of course we had to gush about it and I said I watched it six times for which with a nifty smile, Prabhas was like “Why just 6 times?” — what would you answer that honestly, other than vowing to go back home and watch it over and over again?
Then they asked us about the animated series and how much we liked it. The reply was obvious — for the incredible backstory it was providing about the two princes of Mahishmati, a past we never got to see in the movies. And of course, how much we loved Bhallaladeva, which made Rana look all pleased. By this time, I was totally back in my element and I couldn’t stop myself from stating, “Oh but he kills his best friend in the very first episode!” The room dissolved into laughter while I was reassessing the distance between the couch and the door to make a quick getaway. But that guy is way too good, to a fault. He yet again surprised me by saying, “Well, that’s what makes him the cooler brother no?” I had to smile and nod at that cause damn, he’s too good with persuasion too. What I never expected was Prabhas’ voice on my other side answering his question: “I actually thought of playing Bhallaladeva too. Why stop with just two when I can play three no? But then I felt I should give chance for upcoming heroes like Rana… so we went ahead with it!” He can go toe for toe with Rana-man undoubtedly. But his partner in crime always has an answer, “You killing yourself twice would have looked weird though!” Again laughter rippled throughout as I mentally shook my head at these two dorks, no one is safe from them—I repeat, no one is safe around these two.
Then we spoke about Rana’s new show No 1 Yaari, and how Abhi wished it would come subtitled and he was promised that the team was working on it. It also brought on the topic of whether we knew Telugu and we spoke about our journeys: Sagar lived in Hyderabad so of course he was well aware, Abhi started watching Telugu movies after Baahubali and my interest began after watching Magadheera with my Uni friends. So in a way, it was all because of Rajamouli sir. We had to ask why he didn’t come along with them for which we were assured he was working on something important once again. Ah ha! But the focus on languages continued and I remembered how Manu mentioned she preferred the German dubbed version over watching it in Hindi with subtitles and I told them so. They seemed amazed that it got dubbed in German as well, especially Prabhas. And then Prabhas had to leave so they gave us all our goody bags individually (guess who got lucky enough to get from them both, ME.) Once more pictures were taken of the moment, Prabhas left with a shy wave and Rana went to shoot a small promo video for the Lost Legends with the team in the other room and we were left to talk amongst ourselves. It was then that I was more or less whining about not getting the poster signed by them both and a good-hearted gentleman from the Wizcraft team ensured that my Rise of Sivagami book was sent up to Prabhas’ room to get it signed from him. And when Rana stepped out of his shoot-mode, he was charming enough to sign the posters for us. While he wrote best wishes for the two guys with me, he wrote lots of love on mine and I was like, yep you have been spending too much time with Arya man (another south actor). But it was fun and I enjoyed every minute of it, especially when he handed it back with a “there you go sweet lady!” I had to make a conscious effort to not melt at his adorableness. With all the promotions done and another fabulous movie on his list, I hope that precious man gets his rest!!
His last parting words were, ❝ Do keep the franchise alive, will you? ❞  And we all swore in unison before parting with a wave. Little does he know we have most certainly pledged our lives to do just that!!
After another shoot of us three recapping the entire experience, we bid goodbyes to the team as well and made our way to our rooms. And I came back home the next morning. Now as I think about that day, it feels as if I lived some kind of dream and I wish I could relive it again. Heartfelt thanks to Amazon Prime Video and these two fine gentlemen for making it a beautiful memory!!

Superman!Derek here we go. Okay stiles is nothing like lois like Noah fence to her but naaa. So Scott has somehow managed to get into life threatening danger that Derek use just used to having to save him but THIS TIME Scott has a hot friend who doesn't. need. this. And so superman is a little baffled and like almost forgets to save them bc liek have you seen stiles? So then stiles is salty abt being the damsel in distress bc GOD KNOWS he can defend himself he's a sheriff's son. (1)
So, this is officially my first Super!Derek work! (also on ao3!)
Derek was painfully used to having to save Scott McCall's life.
The reporter was still green, a new hire at Argent Enterprises who had only been working for a few months. He was practically right out of journalism school, still wide-eyed and awestruck by Metropolis.
Derek didn't mind Scott at that much, especially since he was more tolerable than most of the other reporters that flocked to crime scenes hoping to get a glimpse of him. Unlike most, Scott was content to simply report on the stories he was given, rather than go chasing after an interview with Superman.
Objectively, Derek understood why so many reporters and photographers wanted five minutes with him, understood the intrigue of having a living, breathing superhero flying around the city. He understood the need to know more and ferret out the answers to incredible mysteries.
But, personally, he hated the way reporters buzzed around like flies on a slab of dead meat, like blood sucking parasites wanting a picture or soundbite of Superman to launch their career and fill their pockets. He hated the way that half the time he had to split his attention between saving the day and saving the overzealous reporters trying to get some footage of the action.
Fortunately, Derek never had to save Scott from those kinds of incidents. Unfortunately, he had to save Scott from other incidents.
The first time Derek had to save Scott it was because the reporter had gotten lost and inadvertently wound up in a rather rough neighborhood. He had gotten shot at by some white guys who lived and breathed the Second Amendment as he tried to get somewhere safe.
He wound up getting lost even deeper in the neighborhood, apparently having no sense of direction whatsoever. Derek found him cowering behind a dumpster when the sound of gunshots drew him to the scene.
Deflecting more gunshots from the ignorant city rednecks, Derek led Scott out of the neighborhood by the back of his shirt like a disapproving father who had caught his son smoking. After ensuring that Scott wasn't hurt in any way, suffering no gunshot wounds or other injuries, Derek had escorted him back to Argent Enterprises' main office, instructing him to stay out of trouble.
A few weeks later, Derek had to save him again.
Somehow Scott had gotten caught up in the middle of a scuffle between two super villains who had apparently gotten into an argument in a local Starbucks. One of them had reportedly cut in front of the other in line, incensing them enough to throw a punch that had the other guy flying through the wall.
Scott had gotten clipped by the punch as well, making him spill all of the coffee he had been picking up for his co-workers. But that was the least of his worries as he wound up as a hostage inside the coffee shop, shaking like a leaf under a small table.
After hauling off the villains to jail, Derek had hurried back to the Starbucks to make sure that everyone was alright. He had cocked a curious brow when he noticed Scott amongst those taken hostage, wincing when he saw the coffee stains on his t-shirt.
A pattern had formed after that, one that consisted of Scott inexplicably getting into trouble and Derek saving him. It had quickly become an almost daily occurrence.
Scott had an uncanny ability to attract danger though he insisted that his friend, whose name he claimed was Stiles, was the real lightning rod for trouble. And lucky Derek got to pull him out of burning buildings and yank him away from more superpowered fights in the middle of the city.
So, when Derek overheard a police radio call detailing that a couple of reporters had somehow gotten themselves trapped on the roof by yet another super villain that called Metropolis home, he immediately knew that one of them must be Scott.
With a quick glance around the office to make sure no one would notice him leave, Derek discreetly gathered his things in his suitcase and rushed to the elevator. Five minutes later, his suitcase was safely tucked away in his apartment and he was soaring over the skies of Metropolis. Super speed definitely had its perks.
He followed the sound of police sirens and fire engines to the scene of the crime where Livewire was hurling balls of concentrated electricity at the first responders. The air crackled with static as currents of electricity raced through her body, sparking blue at her fingertips.
Her ghostly white skin seemed to glow in the bright sunlight of the late morning, making it look even more unnatural than it already was. In stark contrast to her skin, her neon blue hair stood straight up from her scalp, almost resembling a mohawk.
She was barely recognizable, looking nothing like she had when she spent her days hosting her vitriolic radio talk show where she had ranted and raved about everything from abortions to Superman being an illegal immigrant. She could have given Tori Lahren a run for her money.
And there, on the roof an apartment building that had been left vacant for renovations was none other than Scott, looking terrified as he gawked at the electricity bending woman. He had a microphone clutched tightly in his hand as though he had been on the roof when the villainess attacked.
Derek had hoped to spare a few moments analyzing the situation before acting but his plans were spoiled by one of the first responders. One of the police officers had pointed him out and joyously called, "Look! It's Superman."
Despite wanting to roll his eyes at the fact that the officer had just informed Livewire to his presence, Derek launched into action. He dove at Livewire who snarled at him indignantly, flicking a few strikes of electricity at him as he rushed at her.
Fortunately, the electricity didn't do much other than annoy him a bit, sending a few tiny jolts through him. That is, until she intensified the strength of the current, hurling a huge bolt at him that resembled a strike of lightning.
It struck him in the chest, shocking him into a halt and a premature fall to the concrete roof of the apartment building with a loud crack. He heard a few startled gasps from Scott on the other side of the roof as he pushed himself to his feet and shook himself.
He took another minute to reassess the situation as his fingers twitched with the aftershocks of the assault, glancing around the rooftop. The first thing he noticed was that the stone of the roof was crumbling, the second thing he noticed was that Scott wasn't alone.
There was another man on the roof with him, tall and lean in a red plaid shirt and khakis that looked more skintight than Derek's own outfit. His brown hair was artfully disheveled, dark in contrast to the pale white of his mole dotted skin that immediately reminded Derek of a marble statue.
His big brown eyes were alight with a fierce fire of determination as he watched Livewire, his brows furrowed in concentration. Derek noticed that his plush pink lips were moving rapidly as he frantically whispered something to Scott, squeezing the other reporter's shoulder.
Derek was captivated. The man was so gorgeous, the mere sight of him drowned out everything else.
Everything else including Livewire getting ready to zap him with an even stronger hit of electricity, tendrils of blue sparks coiling around her hands to form a large ball. She stalked closer silently, a wide smirk stretching across her dark lips, making her look almost demonic.
Derek never would have even noticed if it hadn't been for the other reporter with Scott. Standing up taller, he cupped his hands around his mouth and called to Derek, "Dude, watch out!"
Derek turned just in time to see Livewire standing over him, a twisted grin on her face as she prepared to shock him. But before she could, Derek swiped her legs out from under her, making her topple to the ground with a banshee-like screech.
They grappled for a few moments, Livewire forgoing using any of her superhuman abilities in the heat of the moment, instead favoring clawing at Derek's face while shrieking. Derek didn't even bother using all of his own preternatural strength to subdue her, able to pin her arms behind her without it.
He secured her wrists with one of the reinforced zip ties his good friend Batman had given him, reminding Derek to send him a fruit basket. Her powers neutralized, Livewire kicked and screamed as Derek carried her down to the street to the army of police officers who took her into custody and Mirandized her.
With Livewire in the backseat of a police cruiser, Derek hurried back to the roof to rescue the two reporters, worried that the roof might cave in. He hovered over the roof as he made his way to Scott and his friend who was grumbling something so quietly that even Derek couldn't hear him.
"Superman!" Scott called out in relief, visibly sagging as he sighed. He looked exhausted, like the slightest breeze might knock him over.
His friend, on the other hand, looked furious. He had his arms crossed over his chest as he glared at Derek, making him hesitate for a moment in fear that the unknown reporter was one of the people who hated Superman.
"Are you two, alright?" Derek asked as he approached them, lighting down on the roof a few feet away from them. He was a bit wary, not sure how the unknown man might react.
"We're fine," the other reporter growled snappishly, giving Derek an unimpressed once over. He sauntered over to Derek, poking him in the chest with every word, "I didn't need you saving me, y'know. My buddy here might be a little helpless, no offense, Scotty, but I can take care of myself."
Derek bit down on a smile, ducking his head at the indignant tone. He could hear fond exasperation underscoring every word so he didn't take any offense, instead pressing his luck and inquiring, "Is there anything I can do to make it up to, Mr..."
"Stilinski," the man answered immediately, a small smirk curling up the corner of his lip. The smirk growing, he tacked on, "And you could start by going to dinner with me this Saturday. Eight o'clock at the diner on Fourth and Kent."
"I'll be there," Derek grinned widely. He had grown used to saving Scott so it was only fitting that Scott's friend saved him from yet another Saturday night alone.

“Who do u think the superbabies will date?? :D (also since stella looks...”
I would love to hear more about Stella and Beth's relationship drama cause I absolutely love all of these breakdowns about the superbabies
WELL FRIEND there’s other drama too but this is the Major drama that hinders their relationship for a long time
so stella know she has a crush on beth, has been like aggressively ignoring said crush and tryin to Live Her Life and its been a year since stella came out, came to terms and she’s just started her nighttime shenanigans as a vigilante, just started trying to help the way kara does, the way maia does and its going ok???  until she.  you know.  gets stabbed (LIGHTLY STABBED) and is like hmmm i feel as though i should reassess maybe
and then beth’s back in national city after graduating early with like three bachelors (xenobiology, nanotechnology, and engineering) and at least one masters and a corresponding doctorate (in something sciencey, listen im barely an english major), working at l-corp bc she’s a Documented Genius and stella wants to step up her vigilante game, especially since she recently was lightly stabbed and doesnt rlly want that to happen again, and beth’s always been rlly calm and steady, very logical and she keeps all of maia’s secrets, so stella approaches her a little reluctantly to see if she’s willing to help and beth gives her this long, searching look and finally agrees, designs and builds her a new suit with a shitton of gadgets, is the main reason stella starts getting called mechagirl by the press but only helps with stella’s promise that beth can then help with actual missions bc like??  beth cares about her a lot too, doesnt want to see her die ya know??
and it’s weird??  bc now she’s friends with beth in her own right???  works alongside her a lot and beth serves as her tech person, finds her jobs she can do that supergirl or birdy (maia’s superhero alter ego) haven’t gotten to yet and national city gains a new superhero pretty much bc of beth.  and then its a late night of saving ppl and stella comes back to her apartment/headquarters and beth’s still there, wrapping up some end of night reports (she insists on keeping detailed logs in order to avoid any issues with the cops later on) and she’s ordered stella’s favorite takeout, put it in the oven to warm for her and stella’s so grateful and also pretty tired??  rlly tired and beth basically lives with her and sometimes the proximity blurs lines in stella’s mind and so she just leans down to kiss beth, murmurs thank you sleepily and goes into her room to change.  and beth’s just sitting there??  like oh my god, the girl i’ve been in love with for months just kissed me and she doesn’t even realize it but then stella REALIZES IT and runs back out like shit im so sorry beth, that was so inappropriate of me but beths like??  wait do you not like me and stella’s like WAIT DO YOU LIKE ME????
surprise!!  this is how stella finds out beth’s an alien and also how beth finds out stella’s an alien lmao.  like.  beth’s species has mental shields, similar to martians??  so stella’s never been able to read her or see in her mind but she never rlly tried to or even questioned it??  or even noticed bc she’s rlly empathetic anyway, reads body language rlly well, so she’s never known that beth likes her the way stella likes beth
like, later in their relationship, stella suddenly can read beth??  like rlly well and she’s like um what the hell and beth’s like oh, yeah, i stopped putting up the block and stella’s just like starry eyed like holy shit you trust me that much???
beth’s like uh yeah but dont let it go to your head you nerd
but are they smart abt this and admit their v deep feelings for one another then??  no.  they just hookup and then keep hooking up, pretending like nothings changed, pretending like theyre not basically living together or doing all the shit Couples do but just refusing to tell anyone or acknowledge it at all.  and it’s ok for a while??  its solid
but then stella’s suit malfunctions, gives her a nasty burn down her side and she begs beth to not tell anyone that she’s in the hospital, that she’s been hurt and beth’s like shit, stella, i can’t keep doing this bc they’re working with a budget of about eleven dollars, a starburst, and stella’s bus pass, building with shit from the scrap yard and old electronics from secondhand stores and beth wants stella to just tell her family she’s the new vigilante bc then they’d have access to better resources, then beth wouldn’t be so scared every time stella runs out to go save a family from a burning car or stop a bank robbery, but stella refuses, knows that it would be a battle to be accepted like this.
its a fight they’ve had for months before and then stella’s armor fucks up and beth just calls it.  tells her that she comes clean or beth won’t help her keep almost dying, so stella tells her that she doesn’t need her and beth moves all her shit out of stella’s apartment and its all rlly quiet, subdued and its so fucking sad
she takes the job offer she has at wayne security in charm city (wink wink) and doesnt tell stella, stella finds out when she goes over to her moms and finds beth there, with maia and her moms and finn, all laughing and grinning and maia tells her that beth is getting her own department at wayne security, that she’s moving on friday and stella fakes a smile, congratulates beth before she leaves and that’s the end of it, she never sees beth again
but then stella wrecks her motorcycle.  i think i mentioned once that stella is a little bit of an adrenaline junkie??  well she’s a huge adrenaline junkie and she was testing the limits of her newly redesigned bike, pushing it past 90, 120, 150 and then she just??  loses control of the motorcycle.  it just spins out and stella tries to stop it, turns into the spin and pumps the brakes which slows it down enough that she doesnt just fucking die, but not so much that she’s not close to dying
beth is still her emergency contact.  so beth gets the call, middle of the night, that stella danvers was in a wreck, is on the way to the hospital and that she should get here as soon as possible.  but beth is a ten hour drive away and can’t possibly know that she’d get there soon enough, be there if....if it came down to stella not being alone.  and.  well.  its not her place, never was.  so she calls lena, tells her the emts called the last number stella called bc its so much easier that way, kinder to everyone she thinks
she still drives through the night to national city.  gets there just a little after maia does, her eyes red and puffy from sobbing on the freeway, hands shaking a little.  thank god no one asks why she’s there or why she’s this panicked, bc she’d probably tell them and she knows that’s the last thing stella would want (or, well.  she thinks that at least).  maia just sobs out that beth is the best friend for coming, holds onto her in this desperate, damp sort of hug and beth just stays quiet
beth doesnt stay after she finds out stella woke up, is going to be okay.  she can’t right??  she shouldnt be here in the first place right??
so maia stays in national city to help stella in her recovery bc stella’s being stubborn and refuses to move back in with their moms, and maia figures most of her moping is to do with the fact she’s not allowed anywhere near her motorcycle anymore, but then she finds this one shirt that she knows is beth’s, knows beth has had since high school and its tucked under stella’s pillow and she puts it together pretty quickly.  the way they were friends and then all of a sudden they werent, the way beth came running back to nc the second stella got hurt, that weird pulse of anger, hurt she felt when stella found out beth was moving to charm city.  and like???  she doesnt know what to do with that information, she’s not sure what to feel or how to think about this so she just files it away for a later time, tucks the shirt back under stella’s pillow without saying anything
so eventually stella gets convinced to move back home, bc maia’s like hey.  i dont mind living with you and i dont mind helping you, but the neighbors are starting to think its weird that i carry you up the three flights of stairs to your apartment every day so finally stella moves home and maia comes with her bc they’re finally in a good place again??  they finally worked things out between them from when they were kids and maia’s not about to leave stella, not when stella’s like finally started seeing her as another Certified Safe Place.  so they’re back in their childhood bedrooms and then lena finds out about stella’s vigilantism.  mostly by accident??  stella’s still p much out of commission until her body’s at a 100 percent again but lena finds the mask and its a whole Thing between them, the first time stella’s ever really fought with lena and then by natural extension, kara finds out and then maia clues in and then the whole family has an opinion on it and stella’s just like MCFUCK OFF
and maia??  is like desperately scared for her sister, and she’s angry and she’s hurt that she didn’t tell her, didnt think that she would do anything to help her, but she also knows how isolated stella feels, how helpless she must be feeling, how stuck she is, so she calls beth
and when beth is beating around the bush with it, playing dumb like idk why you’d call me??  stella and i really aren’t that close, maia just calls her out on it like.  elizabeth, i know for a fact you were sleeping with my sister
oh
yeah, oh.  i have some words to share with you at a later date, but right now stella needs someone in her corner and that can’t be me
and beth doesnt like.  doesnt even hesitate.  she drives her shitty beat up jetta the ten hours it takes to get from charm city to national city and gets a shitty hotel and is so, so nervous??  bc what if stella doesnt want her here??  what if she never wants to see beth again???  but then maia’s texting, saying that the house is empty if she wants to talk to stella and she does, she really does, like?  she didnt realize how big of a part of her life stella was until she was gone, until she had moved to a new city and met new people like she’s completely in love with stella, so she goes
stella opens the door and just stares for a second before she says that maia’s out for a while but beth just keeps looking at her and finally says it outright, says i’m here to see you, stella like its the most obvious thing in the world and stella’s so tired, she’s starting to close the door and she’s saying i dont need another lecture, i’ve had enough of those for a lifetime and beth lets her close it, knows her well enough to know she wont walk away from the door before beth does, so she calls through and says im not here to lecture you, stell.  i just.  i wanted to see you
the door opens
and its incredibly uncomfortable for a while, incredibly tense and when beth tries to ask her what’s going on, stella just hisses what, like you care?  and beth like??  normally would fire back with something, normally would let this blow up into a fight but she’s thought about it, she really has, and she knows that any time she can have with stella is better than no time at all.  that she’d rather take stella as she is, thrill seeking and too good for words and hard headed in the extreme, take the risks that come with her than have anything else.  so beth nods.  yeah.  i care.  i care a lot about you stella, and i shouldnt have forced you to make a decision like i did.  but its scary when the girl you love doesnt see the same value in her life that you do and it was terrifying watching you leave every night and not being sure if i would wake up to your face on the news
and stella’s like??  shit.  shIT, didn’t account for this at all.  but beth is very steady, is giving her this even-keeled look, keeping her eyes on stella but not forcing eye contact and she finally stands, gets ready to leave
and she tells stella i love you.  and believe me when i say that transcends boundaries like platonic and romantic.  i love you, stella danvers, and i will always be here for you, in whatever way you want me to be and then she’s leaving
and stella has a choice to make, two paths she can take and she stands a little unsteadily and grabs beth’s hand and pulls her back
and she’s like im still pretty stupid, you’re aware of that, right?  and beth laughs, refutes the statement as she rests her forehead against stella’s.  you’re not stupid, stella, never stupid.  a little dense sometimes...  and stella laughs too before she admits, finally, i love you too, genius.  and i dont think i can keep doing this without you?  and she tries to backpedal, bc she’s worried she’s being manipulative or something but beth just shakes her head, says im going to kiss you now, ok?  and stella’s nodding fast, tears finally starting to fall when it all hits her and then they’re kissing for the first time in six months and theyre maybe still kissing when everyone comes home and maia groans bc like i texted you specifically so i could avoid seeing this ugh you guuuyyysssss

Making Your Provider Your Health Ally
Making Your Provider Your Health Ally
How to team up with your provider to enhance your care
By Kimberly Goad March 2017
Spending a day at the pool or riding her BMX bike shouldn’t have been cause for concern after Victoria Bryson was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2013. But the 8-year-old was repeatedly missing the warning signs of hypoglycemia in the hours following physical activity, a condition known as hypoglycemia unawareness.
When Victoria’s endocrinologist, Susan Phillips, MD, recommended she start using a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) in addition to a pump, Victoria’s mother didn’t need to be convinced. The benefits of the device, which records and displays glucose readings in real time, were obvious. “To really fine-tune my daughter’s diabetes management, it made sense to have a CGM as an additional tool to monitor the lows and the highs,” says Polina Bryson, who lives with her husband and two children in San Diego. “We could improve control and quality of life.”
But before Victoria could get the device, Bryson needed to clear an enormous hurdle: cost. The particular CGM recommended by Phillips was a few months shy of being approved for pediatric use by the Food and Drug Administration. That meant Phillips would be prescribing the device for off-label use, possibly hindering insurance coverage. And the Brysons couldn’t afford to buy a CGM out of pocket.
The obstacles seemed insurmountable, Bryson says, until she teamed up with Phillips, who wrote what’s known as a “letter of medical necessity” to the insurance company. Phillips detailed how Victoria Bryson could benefit from using a CGM, citing research studies and including Victoria’s blood glucose logs, which showed that she was having lows and that they were pervasive.
“You have to make a case for using whatever device, documenting the safety and efficacy of it, and explaining in detail the risk that the patient is suffering due to the lack of intervention,” says Phillips, a pediatric endocrinologist at Rady Children’s Hospital–San Diego and an assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of California–San Diego School of Medicine.
The strategy paid off: Not only was the CGM covered by insurance, saving the Brysons thousands of dollars, but it happened in a timely fashion. “Our endocrinologist knew what to do,” says Bryson. “She knew what language to use, what data to include in the request to document medical necessity.”
Joining forces with your primary care provider or specialist can lead to improved diabetes management. But some people, particularly those newly diagnosed, may not realize the power of partnering with a provider to boost their quality of care.
“Your physician is there to collaborate and be your partner because you’re the one who—day in and day out—is making the decisions and figuring out what’s working and what’s not,” says Martha Funnell, MS, RN, CDE, FAADE, associate research scientist in the Department of Learning Health Sciences at the University of Michigan Medical School. “Having a provider who’s open to that type of relationship is absolutely critical because this is a long-term chronic disease.”
Forming that relationship begins with listening, says Phillips. “If you do that enough, patients believe you and trust that you’re going to help them the next time something comes up,” she says.
Keep reading to see how your provider can help you get the treatment you need when you find yourself in challenging situations.
Situation: Your doctor recommends a pump to help with better blood glucose management. You’re familiar with the basics, but you’re not entirely comfortable using the device.
Strategy: Your doctor might not have the time or the detailed knowledge needed to help you learn about all aspects of self-care. That’s why it’s important to work with someone who can refer you to another provider without delay. “Diabetes is a team sport,” says Funnell. “There are lots of other people you need to be working with: the educator, the dietitian, the community pharmacist. Part of making your provider your ally is about saying, ‘I understand you’ve only got 10 minutes, but I want to learn about this. Who else can I talk to?’ ”
Situation: Your doctor suggests a CGM to help you manage your diabetes. But you’re on Medicare, which generally doesn’t cover the device. (Medicare recently announced it would cover one brand of FDA-approved CGM for making treatment decisions; however, it’s not yet clear when coverage will begin.)
Strategy: “Continuous glucose monitoring has evidence-based benefits for people with diabetes, and yet access to these technologies is limited for many people,” says David Kerr, MD, FRCPE, director of research and innovation at the William Sansum Diabetes Center in Santa Barbara, California. His advice: Don’t take “no” for an answer. If your insurance plan doesn’t cover a CGM, ask your provider to write a letter of medical necessity to your insurance company explaining why you need the device. If you’re denied, ask your provider to appeal the decision with what’s known as a “peer-to-peer review”—typically a phone conversation between your physician and a physician at your insurance company.
If that still doesn’t do the trick, craft a letter of your own. “I can make the case, but it can be much more powerful coming from the patient,” says Veronica Brady, PhD, MSN, FNP-BC, BC-ADM, CDE, a nurse practitioner at the University of Nevada–Reno. Ask your provider for a copy of the original letter sent on your behalf so you can address yours to the same person and include any peer-reviewed studies it mentions. Add a copy of your blood glucose logs to prove your case. Then personalize your letter with details from your own experience.
Situation: Your doctor recently prescribed insulin to help you manage your type 2 diabetes, but you skip doses on more occasions than you care to admit. You’re afraid you’ll gain weight, or perhaps it’s the injections that scare you, so you’re less than honest with your doctor.
Strategy: Fudging about any aspect of your treatment doesn’t do you or your provider any good. If you’re not able to stay on track, it’s important to be honest so you can reassess your goals.
“Patients worry you’ll be upset that they didn’t take their medicine or didn’t stick with whatever plan you set as a goal,” says Neil Skolnik, MD, professor of family and consumer medicine at Temple University School of Medicine and member of the American Diabetes Association’s primary care advisory group. “Whenever you put two people together—and this is true whether they’re longtime friends, or doctors and patients—there’s value in saying, ‘What are we trying to accomplish together?’ Once you clarify the goals, it’s easier to move forward.” Your doctor isn’t there to judge you, but to help you find solutions.
Another thing to remember: Honesty is a two-way street. For your provider to be your ally, he or she will need to deliver the cold, hard truth. “You want a provider who will hold up the mirror and say, ‘This is what’s going on. I’m going to give you the information. What choice are you going to make?’ ” says Morrison.
Take Harold Young. He weighed 465 pounds when he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at age 27. But it wasn’t until he began seeing a new primary care doctor five years later that he fully realized he needed to do something about his weight. “He didn’t sugarcoat anything,” says Young, manager of team development at the American Diabetes Association. “At that first appointment, he said, ‘You’re going to die earlier than you need to if you don’t get a handle on your weight.’ ”
Young spent the next few years trying to shed pounds and improve his blood glucose levels through diet and exercise, but with limited success. Finally, his doctor recommended bariatric surgery. By then, doctor and patient had developed enough trust for Young to confide his misgivings. “My fear was that I’d go through this major surgery—then what?” says Young, now 41. He was also worried about pain. His doctor referred him to a surgeon who alleviated his fears with straight talk. “He said, ‘Initially, I’ll give you pain meds, but then you’ll have to learn to deal with it,’ ” recalls Young.
Now, four years later, Young has lost more than 200 pounds and he’s met his A1C goals. The lesson? “You are the steward of your own health, but you have to trust your doctor,” he says.
Situation: You’re curious about a new treatment you’ve heard of, but you leave your doctor’s office without getting around to asking about it.
Strategy: “Go in with an agenda,” says Tyree Morrison, CRNP, CDE, a nurse practitioner with Frederick Primary Care Associates in Frederick, Maryland. That’s how Susette Langston approaches her doctor visits. Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 14 years ago, she arrives for appointments armed with a small notebook detailing her blood glucose readings, blood pressure and other test results, as well as a file of things she wants to discuss with her doctor, such as magazine articles related to some aspect of diabetes she’s unclear about.
“I don’t want to forget anything that’s important to me,” says Langston, who lives in Rochester, New York. “I jot down questions as they occur to me and keep them with my blood glucose readings so I will have them handy for my doctor visit.” She tries to save time early in a visit so she can spend it asking questions later. “While you are waiting for your doctor to come into the exam room, take off your shoes and socks so you’re ready to have your feet examined, as they should be at each visit,” she says. (For more tips, see “Make The Most of Your Doctor Visit,” below.)
Situation: You’re having trouble paying for your insulin. Or maybe you’re curious about a new drug you’ve seen advertised on TV but you’re worried about the cost.
Strategy: Let your doctor know you’re having trouble financially. He or she may be able to revise your prescriptions by suggesting an equally effective but less expensive medication, or recommend coupons and assistance programs to help you cover the expense. Also ask your pharmacist for information that you can share with your doctor, whether that’s about cost or medication facts.
Make the Most of Your Doctor Visit
Fifteen minutes. That’s how much time you’re typically allotted with your health care provider. Here’s howto make the most of it.
Prep for Your Visit
Bring a detailed blood glucose log; a list of your medications—not just the names, but also dosages and time of day you take each; and any other health forms or documents. Make a note of when you last had your eyes, feet, and blood pressure screened. If you cover the basics and your urgent needs quickly, you’ll have more time for an open conversation.
Ask Questions
“Between visits, write down the things that are of concern to you,” says Veronica Brady, PhD, MSN, FNP-BC, BC-ADM, CDE, a nurse practitioner at the University of Nevada–Reno. Put a star next to the questions you feel are the most pressing, such as: Should I be concerned about the tingling or numbness in my feet?
Recap
Review everything that was covered in your exam, as well as next steps. “If your doctor is referring you to another [provider], ask for a copy of any correspondence so you’ll have a record of what’s being said about you,” suggests David Kerr, MD, FRCPE, director of research and innovation at the William Sansum Diabetes Center in Santa Barbara, California. “It will move the clinician to use language that’s understandable.”

He may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when he becomes overstimulated. He will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and a force-free, positive reinforcement-based training class may help him to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded. IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: Achilles exhibited high energy, but was easily refocused. Despite a high arousal level, when presented with a high value treat he was alert and would receive the treat with a soft mouth. After about 10 minutes in the room following the assessment completion, both the assessor and handler were standing and discussing the overall session and Achilles settled between them into a laying position with a relaxed body. Due to the challenges observed combined with Achilles' inability to thrive in the care center, the behavior department believes he would be best set up to succeed if placed with an experienced rescue partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification plan before permanent placement so that he is set up to succeed in a future adoptive home. Force-free, reward based training only is advised as well as seeking guidance from a qualified trainer or behaviorist. No children (under 13): Because of Achilles' overall exuberance and potential to become highly overstimulated, we believe he would be best set up to succeed if placed in an experienced adult only home environment. These dogs are not displaying concerning behaviors in shelter, and the owner surrender profile (where available) is positive. Some dogs with Level 1 determinations may still have potential challenges, but these are challenges that the behavior team believe can be handled by the majority of adopters. The potential challenges could include no young children, prefers to be the only dog, no dog parks, no cats, kennel presence, basic manners, low level fear and mild anxiety. Level 2 Dogs with Level 2 determinations will be suitable for adopters with some previous dog experience. They will have displayed behavior in the shelter (or have owner reported behavior) that requires some training, or is simply not suitable for an adopter with minimal experience. Dogs with a Level 2 determination may have multiple potential challenges and these may be presenting at differing levels of intensity, so careful consideration of the behavior notes will be required for counselling. Potential challenges at Level 2 include no young children, single pet home, resource guarding, on-leash reactivity, mouthiness, fear with potential for escalation, impulse control/arousal, anxiety and separation anxiety. Level 3 Dogs with Level 3 determinations will need to go to homes with experienced adopters, and the ACC strongly suggest that the adopter have prior experience with the challenges described and/or an understanding of the challenge and how to manage it safely in a home environment. In many cases, a trainer will be needed to manage and work on the behaviors safely in a home environment. It is likely that every dog with a Level 3 determination will have a behavior modification or training plan available to them from the behavior department that will go home with the adopters and be made available to the New Hope Partners for their fosters and adopters. Some of the challenges seen at Level 3 are also seen at Level 1 and Level 2, but when seen alongside a Level 3 determination can be assumed to be more severe. The potential challenges for Level 3 determinations include adult only home (no children under the age of 13), single pet home, resource guarding, on-leash reactivity with potential for redirection, mouthiness with pressure, potential escalation to threatening behavior, impulse control, arousal, anxiety, separation anxiety, bite history (human), bite history (dog) and bite history (other). Several scuffles were described as occurring when one or the other of the dogs got free of their crate. The dogs were kept separated in the home due to their history. Scuffles resulted in broken skin and blood drawn, and were treated at home. No bite history with humans. Housetrained:: Yes Energy level/descriptors:: Bella is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, excitable, and active, with a medium energy level. Summary:: Due to Bella's behavior in the care center and her low threshold for arousal, she will not receive a handling assessment at this time. Bella has allowed gentle touch during socialization sessions, and allowed handling for veterinary examinations during the early days of her stay; however, she has become increasingly difficult to remove from the kennel. See In Shelter Observations for more details. Date of intake:: 12/15/2018 Summary:: Loose, wiggly, allowed all handling Date of initial:: 12/15/2018 Summary:: Friendly, attention-seeking, allowed all handling IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 12/18: Bella was at the front of the kennel when approached by 2 behavior team members. Bella was hard barking and jumping on the kennel door, and was difficult to remove due to jumping and leash biting. When brought out of the kennel Bella immediately lunged at the dog in the next kennel, jumping and flailing when pulled away. Once out the room, Bella stopped flailing and pulled hard to get outside. A collar and drag leash were attached, and Bella investigated the yard. Throughout the session, Bella's body became softer and she began to briefly solicit attention from her caretakers. She allowed petting on the back and sides; her head and neck were avoided due to her injuries. When the session was over, Bella was easy to leash and return to her kennel. She was kept on a short leash and did not react when walking past the other dogs in the room. 12/19: Bella was at the front of her kennel hard barking, muzzle punching, and jumping up on the kennel door. When attempting to remove her from the kennel, Bella immediately grabbed the handler's rope, pulled it into the kennel, and began to bite and shake the rope. When placed behind the transfer door in order to collect the rope, Bella barked and head-butted the transfer door. A large, long rope toy was used to distract Bella during the next leashing attempt. While placing the toy in the kennel, Bella jumped up and snapped at the caretaker's hand - but once she saw the rope toy, Bella grabbed the toy and began to pull it into the kennel. While trying to put the loop of the rope over her head, Bella then grabbed at the rope again but went back to the toy. She was not able to be removed from the kennel for this session. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable Recommendations:: No cats,Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner Recommendations comments:: No cats: Bella is reported to have growled and snapped at a cat in her previous home. Single pet home/recommend no dog parks: Due to Bella's history of scuffles with the resident dog in her previous home, and the need to keep the dogs separated, we recommend that she be the only pet in her next home. Bella was not put into playgroup due to her history, but we have observed some kennel/barrier reactivity toward other dogs in the care center. Place with a New Hope Partner: we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide force-free, reward-based behavior modification to address Bella's behavior toward other dogs. Bella will need careful management during walks to keep her and the dogs around her safe. Potential challenges: : On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Low threshold for arousal Potential challenges comments:: Barrier frustration: Bella has been observed to lunge toward other dogs when passing their kennels. Kept on a short leash, this behavior was manageable, and we cannot be certain whether it is due to reactivity toward the dog or toward the barrier. Low threshold for arousal: Bella's arousal level makes her difficult to remove from the kennel, as she becomes fixated on objects like the leash and toys, grabbing and shaking them. *** TO FOSTER OR ADOPT *** BELLA IS RESCUE ONLY.
