I am wary of the sensationalization of my narrative because it contains sexual violence. The sad fact is, however, that sexual assault of every kind is far too common everywhere to be sensational. That doesn't mean I am not deeply and negatively affected by it. I will always be affected by it. But I guarantee you that neither of the men who raped me consider what they did to be rape, if they consider it at all. I know the name of one of them; he is a father now with a woman who was his girlfriend when he raped me. I was nothing in his life but a short release from the boredom and loneliness endemic in camp life, but he was a major trauma in mine. I have seen many people quick to become defensive against the suggestion that gendered violence exists in places like the oil sands. They may either work there and are proud of the work they do and the livelihoods they support with it, or they know and love men there, and are insulted by the insinuation of being lumped in with anything to do with something as abhorrent as sexual assault.

“Chronorama. Tesori fotografici del 20° secolo” è la prima esposizione mondiale dedicata ai tesori fotografici recentemente acquisiti dalla Pinault Collection e provenienti dagli archivi di Condé Nast, alcuni mai visti prima dal grande pubblico. La mostra presentata a Palazzo Grassi raggruppa una selezione di 407 opere realizzate tra il 1910 e il 1979, ordinate in un percorso cronologico, che mostrano donne, uomini, momenti storici, vita quotidiana, sogni e drammi del 20° secolo.

“Chronorama” rappresenta il tempo che sfugge e la traccia visiva che lascia attraverso le immagini realizzate da oltre 150 artisti internazionali come Edward Steichen, Berenice Abbott, Cecil Beaton, Lee Miller, André Kertész, Horst P. Horst, Diane Arbus, Irving Penn, Helmut Newton, tra i fotografi, Eduardo Garcia Benito, Helen Dryden e George Wolfe Plank, tra gli illustratori. Tra i più grandi talenti della loro generazione, questi artisti hanno definito l’estetica fotografica e artistica del tempo attraverso la pubblicazione del proprio lavoro sulle riviste edite da Condé Nast (Vogue, Vanity Fair, House & Garden, Glamour, GQ...). Ai ritratti delle icone dello spettacolo e delle grandi personalità del secolo si mescolano fotografie di moda, fotoreportage, scatti di architettura, nature morte e saggi di fotografia documentaristica.
