RARE is a 2-day masterclass for the next generation of creative thinkers and doers brought to you by Google Design, D&AD, and the Berlin School of Creative Leadership. ————————————— Our Founder & Chief Purpose Officer, Sulaiman, helped judge the applicants with awesome fellow judges. We are humbled to be representing underrepresented creative disabled talent, as we are happy to announce that Sulaiman will be a practitioner (speaker/teacher) during the masterclass. He has been selected as one of the 50 RARE delegates to be a part of this incredible 2-day programme (the only judge on the masterclass, but obviously he didn’t judge his application, and it was done privately) too. Sulaiman adds that he’s excited to be a part of RARE LDN on 21-23 April as well and that he’s aiming to ensure disabled talent are not forgotten when building creative leaders of the future. ————————————— 50 RARE creatives are ready to set business (and the world) on fire to make it a better place for all! I loved it!‬ ————————————— ‪I first met Carl about six months ago when he got touch to see if I wanted to collaborate. Being someone who loves to push myself out of my comfort zone and always enjoys collaborating with new people, I of course said yes. During that first phone call, the more he told me about his startup (and what’s he trying to achieve) and the more we chatted, the more I felt like I’d known him for years. We just clicked. I was immediately struck by his commitment and passion to bring inclusivity, empathy, hard work, and love to everything he wants to do. Since then, we just stayed in touch and have been chatting to each other about our respective organisations and future collaborations. Simply, Carl is a truly nice guy and an incredible community builder. ‬ ————————————— ‪Anyway, Carl’s event was fantastic. Wow. What an amazing event with amazing people. It was a very special moment, and a rare occasion where I felt completely at home and loved by the inspiring people joined us whom mostly I didn’t know. You could feel the positivity and energy of change to do things better, to do better in a tangible way to make the world a healthier, more inclusive place for all. And it is all because of Carl. As a fellow active #IntersectionalFeminist, he inspires me to lead the change I want to see and fight (as creative, disabled man of Southeast Asian decent) for every marginalised community until I’m mentally unable. Ten years ago today (at 08:00 on Thursday, 15th November 2007) he was my very 1st carer on the very 1st day of my care package, and Albert still works with me til this day. YES, he’s that good!‬ ————————————— Over‪ ‬the years‪,‬ Albert has been there ‪f‬or me in good times and bad in more ways than I‪ ‬can‪ ‬count. He is ever ready‪ ‬with a “how can I‪ ‬help?” and ‪“‬can-do” attitude ‪t‬o ‪facilitate my needs as I want to live my life, unlike previous carers (and like several of current carers) who are often rigid in attitude and want things their way rather than doing things as I wish as a 32 years young man with full mental capacity. Albert is (and from day one has always been) consistently reliable, punctual, kind, caring, supportive, empathetic, friendly, firm with me when I need a kick, honest, and confidence-building; as well as taught me so much about Africa and Ghana. He always continuously treats me with dignity, respect, and looks after my human rights too. In short, Albert is an extraordinary and fantastic carer! ‬ ————————————— In a society where people with‪ ‬disabilities are being pushed to breaking‪ ‬point and‪ ‬treated like third class citizens (I’m no exception), I’m lucky and blessed to have Albert ‪i‬n my life.‪ Everyone who happens to have a disability needs an Albert in their life. ‬ ————————————— Also, here’s some cheeky photos of Albert and I‪ ‬that I‪ totally ‬love: earlier this year e‪n‬joying the sunshine in Epping ‪F‬orest, and‪ ‬my absolute‪ ‬favourite photos‪ ‬(and memories) from last year when Albert took me to the beach‪ ‬and we enjoyed the sea after I‪ ‬said I‪ ‬love‪ ‬the ocean and the beach! ————————————— Thank you‪,‬ Albert, for an incredible ten‪ ‬years, as well as your ongoing support, kindness, care, empathy, dignity, respect, and friendship. #Millennials #StartWithWhy #PenguinLive | So, last night my best mate (A.K.A. my #BruvaFromAnotherMuva) Mr Danny Pallett invited me to attend the Simon Sinek in Conversation with Reggie Yates event at Union Chapel. As this blurb from Union Chapel best described the event: “Simon Sinek and Reggie Yates Host an Exclusive Conversation Around The Millennial Question and Finding Purpose in Life and at Work…” • • • • • • What a fantastic night it was with incredible thoughts and insights from Simon and Reggie! My mind was blown away, and I’m still buzzing from all the enlightening ideas shared. As someone who happens to be severely physically disabled, my relationship with technology (especially smartphones) is mixed. I like the ability to accessibly connect with anyone. However, as it is tough to use my phone myself without help (and it is too much of an effort for me to get others to help me with my phone if not needed) when out and about, I’d rather hang out with the people I’m with instead. Personally, I believe technology is just a tool, and often we’re too connected unnecessarily all the time, which often means people don’t know how to look you in the eye and just chat. At university, I even wrote my dissertation on mobile devices and creativity entitled “Mobile Dream Machines: How the notion of being ‘mobile’ impacts creativity” in 2012. For me, it’s about only using technology, in particular, my phone as needed to communicate because I am aware of the dangers of always being hyper-connected (that Simon further confirmed my beliefs were correct), as well as just live the experience. I just prefer to enjoy the adventure with people in reality, rather than being connected to technology. Also, I’m starting to find my own purpose in life as well and after your talk last night I’m feeling inspired and energised to keep pushing forward. This is why it’s crucial to me to always challenge myself to be outside of my comfort zone continuously doing what I can’t and connect with people on a human level sharing stories and adventures. That’s the power of “Fist Bumps Only, PLEASE!” As my friend Scott Morrison best wrote: “Journeys are limited – Adventures are limitless.” • • • • • • It was an unbelievable honour to meet Simon and Reggie afterwards too.
