Could just be me but imo “care about me because you could end up like me” is even worse. It’s selling the idea that disabled lives are tragic to manipulate people into pitying us, and it baffles me. PissOnPity unless you need it, I guess?

Im not going to tell people not to say it if they honestly think it’s a good strategy but I really dislike it when people act as if I’m saying it too just because im standing next to them.

‪#CareAboutRare #PissOnPity #ThisAbility #creativity #Diversity #disability #RightTheRatio #adventure | ‬Yesterday was #RareDiseaseDay, and I have #MuscularDystrophy. And in this week’s #BeastFromTheEast weather here in London, I’m bringing you some #sunshine and #magic – A photo of me enjoying the sun last summer in Epping Forest and some good news that arrived yesterday. ————————————— I was supposed to be dead by 5, and now I’m 30-something, and having a rare disease, I have always felt uncomfortable with who I am entirely in every sense, but as I get older, I’m growing to love myself. The last month or so has been more terrible as well, as I received some devastating (and frustrating) news finding out by several consultants that my Muscular Dystrophy is progressing (my muscles are getting weaker) and my severe Scoliosis is getting worse (gravity is annoying) faster than I’d like. However, it’s life, and I am going to keep pushing myself out of my comfort zone and living the life I want, no matter what anyone thinks. [Being underestimated and facing adversity every day has its advantages. The world is crisper and clearer, and you never take anything or anyone for granted.] As my shero, Cindy Gallop, best said: “You will never own the future if you care what people think.” ————————————— This year, I’m taking Cindy’s wise-words into more tangible action to be the person I want to be; and I’ll be more strategic, focused, empathetic, and thoughtful in everything I do. Trusting myself, being kind to myself, loving myself. Growing through discomfort because great minds don't think alike. Always pushing my luck, to make it matter. #CSMiniCannes #Advertising #Design | Last night, I attended Creative Social’s annual Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity roundup – CS Mini Cannes meetup – at the trendy London office of Twitter in Soho. Here’s a blurb about the event from Creative Social’s Eventbrite page: “We are back for our annual round up of everything #CannesLions. CS Mini Cannes hits the London stage with an inspiring selection of talks and panels from key creative leaders to give you the low down on what everyone was buzzing about at this year’s festival of creativity.” • • • • • • The session was divided up into four strategic content areas: 1) The Stage – “Bringing content from the Cannes stage to London.” 2) See It Be It – “We put the spotlight on two of the 15 women chosen to take part in the ‘See It Be It’ initiative from Cannes.” 3) The Awards– “Hear which work truly inspired our Creative Leaders and why it made them think F**k that was good. Come away armed with tips on how to win your very own Gold Lions next year.” AND 4) The Future – “Our panel will discuss key trends, creative highlights and future forecasting to help you understand ‘what and where next?’” • • • • • • In part one, we had inspiring talks on “Bravery in Advertising and Creativity” by Trevor Robinson, OBE (Founder & ECD, Quiet Storm) and on “When Your Passion Burns out Suddenly and Violently. Then What?” by Michelle Morgan (Co-Founder, Livity), which were condensed versions of their talks they gave at Cannes Lions. • • • • • • In part two, we had insightful talks by Jaki Jo Hannan (Senior Art Producer, AMV BBDO) and Shahnaz Ahmed (Senior Graphic Designer, Livity / Founder & Director, Knit Aid) about the See It Be It programme. • • • • • • In part three, we had two hilarious talks by Nadya Powell (Co-Founder, Utopia and Innovation Social ��� Juror, Innovation Lions) and Henry Cowling (Creative Director, Unit 9 – President, Digital Craft Lions). They shared their thought of being on this year’s jury (though a different jury each) at Cannes Lions and how to win a Lions in their (respective) categories. • • • • • • And in part four, we heard a lively and incredible panel discussion with Elizabeth Cherian (Director, The Innovation Group, JWT), Johnny Vulkan (Founding Partner, Anomaly) and Tom Ollerton (Innovation Director, We Are Social) hosted by Claire Beale (Global Editor-In-Chief, Campaign). They shared their thoughts on future trends for our industry and how to stay ahead of the curve. • • • • • • What a great night! Now fly.” • • • • • • As a Utopian, yesterday afternoon/evening I attended the first Utopia meetup with some wonderful Utopians. We had a fantastic #workshop #facilitationtraining by our incredible fellow Utopians John Monks and Lizzie Shupak of Curve at the offices of Zone in Kings Cross. I loved it! • • • • • • Utopia was co-founded by Nadya Powell and Daniele Fiandaca. “Utopia is a business change consultancy that rewires business for the Age of Creativity. It was founded on the belief there is a better way to do business. One driven by creativity, #empathy and #innovation.” I am honoured to be a part of Utopia as an Utopian with such talented, caring, open-minded and intelligent people. Watch this space. • • • • • • The workshop facilitation training was amazing with kindness and generosity to share and discover, which I thoroughly enjoyed. It was great to get to know the other Utopians further too. After the facilitation training, I feel ignited with a greater holistic knowledge, news skills, future collaborators list and stronger energy to be a better, kinder facilitator and (eventually) a good creative leader. I’m still buzzing and I cannot wait for the next Utopia meetup, as well as to start working with these lovely Utopians on some magical projects together! • • • • • • Also, we enjoyed the facilitation training so much that we forgot to take a group photo after the event, so I took this cheeky photo once I got home. • • • • • • “Journeys are limited. So last night, I had drinks and and an amazing catch up with my mate, Mike (who is a Planner at Valenstein & Fatt, Grey Re-Established 2017)! 🎉 I first met Mike when we both were featured in the same Campaign Magazine article on disability and work in the creative industries last September, and I’m honoured that I got to share the platform with him as a fellow creative type; we are also recently working on lots of exciting projects together that I can’t wait to start sharing with you. I was so enlightened by his story, that I had to meet up with him again and further continue chatting together. • • • • • • Anyway, we had a great chat and a proper catch up. We hate the idea of losing control and not knowing what might come next. We like routine. We have habits that make us feel comfortable. Creative bravery is about embracing change.
