Thoughts of Birds of Prey (2023-) #6
Tumblr media
Spoilers for Birds of Prey (2023-) #6
So the newest issue of the current Birds of Prey comic has recently come out and I guess since I took the time to make multiple fairly long-ish posts about this run, I should go over my thoughts here.
To sum things up... I thought it okay but also not really too big of a fan by the end of it. I didn't exactly dislike it, but I guess it left me with too many questions and felt a bit too contrived. It was enjoyable enough, but kinda felt like my enjoy-ness of it decreased with each subsequent issue. It wasn't bad, but I guess that's my knee-jerk fresh reaction.
Of course, it still possible that there is more to the story than there is now and that future issues will reveal new information which might clear up some of my issues more, I'll be discussing that as well...
Note again that I am a novice in comics, and Gotham Academy was one of the first I read fully so perhaps I'm biased in that area. But to go over my thoughts for why I kinda feel slightly disappointed in more detail...
What was the point of Meridian?
Tumblr media
Warning of future doom, apparently. So as it turns out, the real reason that Barbara wasn't include was because she died eleven times already
(the fact that this was far from Meridian's first attempt was foreshadowed last issue with her noting where the last battle "always is"). So someone is out to get the Birds of Prey, and they're possibly using Future Maps time travel tech to do it.
While this does somewhat answer the question of why Barbara was specifically excluded; still doesn't explain the secrecy.
Like, all these visions of Barbara dying have her in her Batgirl outfit, so couldn't she just have been informed she'd die and asked to oversee the mission as Oracle? Or does that also somehow lead to her death?
Tumblr media
Being kept in the loop would also presumably have greatly helped avoid awkward feelings like this. And from what I know of Barbara, her tactical mind is probably more valuable than her martial art skills. But I guess whatever evil time traveller is targeting the BoP would've found a way to get to Babs anyway? (also on a side note; Barbara getting hurt by not being included was at least one thing I kinda predicted. My other, more thougt-out predictions though... well I'll get to those in a bit)
Tumblr media
It also confirms that Dinah indeed did not apparently get any explanation for why she had to exclude Barbara until after the mission was complete and.... that feels weird?
Like I said, I'm a novice on comics (although I am now definitely adding more Birds of Prey stuff to my to-read list) so I'm not the biggest expert on these characters. Nevertheless it feels that Black Canary here would've agreed to attack Wonder Woman and her people while excluding Oracle all on the word of a time traveller she's likely never met before (and in the present is a teenager who she's likely never met before either) without even demanding a damn good explanation first.
I guess it was more dramatic from a story perspective for Meridian to reveal this stuff now and set up the next arc. But it still just feels contrived to me. Maybe I'm overlooking/overthinking something though?
Meridian's Motives
So I've gone over a theory before that Meridian was in fact evil and possibly even connected to Megaera. That theory was not confirmed, or overly supported, by this. And it does seem like Meridian is probably on the up-and-up.
Tumblr media
Perhaps I'm a tad biased/sunk-cost fallacy right now since I spent a decent amount of time on the theory of Meridian being evil, but still worth noting that this mission ended up Megaera possessing Sin, albeit with Sin in control (and presumably actually in control because Megaera said Sin was in control while Sin used the lasso on her).
There's still quite a few similarities between Meridian and Megaera which are a bit difficult to overlook (you can check out the link I placed above where i went into more detail into that).
Its worth noting as well that Meridian mentioned that whichever evil time traveller is targeting the BoP, they're using her technology most likely. An interesting detail, and one which raises q
Tumblr media
Could it be Meridian is hiding something still? All the information we know about the future and her motives comes from her after all.
Or could it be she's being controlled without her knowledge? Or a second Meridian is up and about?
Perhaps it seems like I'm still focusing a disproportionate amount on Meridian, but she still remains the driving force behind all this issues of the narrative which have somewhat hurt my enjoyment and given me questions.
Tumblr media
And to repeat what I've said before. Meridian seems like a strange direction for the character of Maps Mizoguchi.
As I've alluded to before, I'm probably quite biased in this area because I've read Gotham Academy years ago before I really got into comics like I have recently and it was one of the first runs I've finished and stuff.
Maps is a character who wants to be Robin. And that's the path which she seems to have been developed upon during her fairly recent return.
Tumblr media
Given how still early she is in her storyline of becoming Robin (or some other kind of vigilante) it just still feels like a strange choice for Maps Mizoguchi of all people to show up as a time traveling hero with a persona and skillset which seems in stark contrast to her every prior appearance.
Meridian does not appear to be a martial artist, Maps doesn't appear to be a tech genius. Magic would seem like a more likely 'superpower' than super-tech for Maps considering the more supernatural focus of Gotham Academy.
Tumblr media
Maps has been established with a preference for swords while Meridian is only shown fighting using a fancy taser.
Am I thinking too deeply into it? Probably, yes.
But still feels like an overall strange decision to introduce Future Maps in such a manner. Especially when Present Maps has only returned to semi-focus in recent years and still hasn't really developed too much in her own current goals (such as being Robin).
So taking a character who's still in need of a bit more focus and development and then giving them a future persona which is at contrast to their current development chain? Seems odd.
Also at first i just assumed Meridian comes from a post-apocalyptic future which would be retconned out of the timeline by this arc. But Meridian's comments about how she doesn't take time travel lightly and is trying to right the timeline suggests she does not in fact come from a post-apocalyptic timeline.
So does that mean Maps is destined to become Meriden?
Again, this is probably my bias due to Gotham Academy nostalgia. But I'm not sure if I'm too much of a fan of this direction for her.
Especially, as I keep noting, Present Maps has only barely gotten started on working on becoming Robin (or any-kind of vigilante); but Meridian seems to suggest Maps is going to drop her current direction and go in a completely different direction at some point in the future.
Well those of my thoughts I guess. I suppose I'll see how things develop from here.
While I did find the Birds of Prey quite well-drawn so far and fairly enjoyable. All this thoughts I've gone over and the general feeling this arc was a tad contrived has all somewhat mitigated my enjoyment.

at first I lovedddd the webcomic, it's my favourite webcomic of all time. Sometimes I felt like things were rushed (cough cough.. bone dragon arc...) And just seemed off in the story, like it wasn't even meant to be in it but I didn't mind it bc I liked the silliness and lightheartedness of the story until I read the q&a. I was so thrown off by how "rude" the artist seemed and when it got to the point where someone asked about all the changes that's when I was like "changes? You mean they changed a few things about the story from the original novel?". I then started digging around and that's when I found ur blogs and wow, the whole story changed perspectives for me. After reading more and more I found out exactly how complex Lloyds character is and his relationship with other characters and the whole "Javiers hair is mint green cuz silver is hard to draw" as a just beginner artist I thought was very stupid. I tried reading the novel after finding out how much was actually changed and how the novel is more complex and filled out than the novel but I'm too small brained and trying to read something with mostly words makes my head actually spin and lose interest (which is why I only read the adaptations of stuff a d never the novels) . I find it quite sad actually bc at first when we got introduced to og Lloyd in the newest chapter I instantly fell in love with him because I like his type of character and I find him very relatable, always blaming others (even tho I know I'm wrong), making excuses, violent behaviour, actually somewhat caring about things but mostly not really and using alcohol (for me it's daydreaming) as a way to escape. Or at least that's how I see him in the webcomic and yeah that's why I find him very relatable. I love him so much even more than Kim (y'all don't attack me for this T^T) but after reading ur blog about him and realising he's completely different and much more whiny and shitty in the novel I'm just like "aw man, my fav character that most people hate is actually supposed to be a absolute bitch with no good or relatable thing about him(I still love webcomic him tho)" . I'm very disappointed with the webcomic now honestly and would love to read the novel but again I just literally can't read only words (if u have any suggestions on how to make it easier and more interesting to read novels wiithout literally having to bang my head on my table because of all the words and no pictures that would be really great!! (◍•ᴗ•◍)
Wait now that I'm reading this I realised I went completely off course and just saying stuff about myself , I understand if ya don't reply or have anything to say cuz honestly neither would I T^T
sorry it took me so long to reply!
you are so valid nonnie i appreciate you took me along your journey <3
as for ways to read novels more easily! mmhh personally i've never really struggled with binge reading, so take my words with a grain of salt, but i've heard doing it in small chunks helps! you don't have to rush through a novel, you can do it at your pace. maybe you can liveblog it, point out stuff you like or made you laugh or just notice while you read. tged specifically has a lot of chapters but most of them hover around the 2.5-2.7k word count, so you can read one chapter at a time without getting to overwhelmed. the writing style is very simple, has constant breaks and also it does have illustrations for every chapter! if that helps!
if you can do it, maybe also changing the font or the spacing can help. personally i like clear fonts without too much embellishments and 1.15 spacing, but you can experiment until you find a font that you can read easily.
i hope some of this is useful, like i said, not really my area of expertise but i really hope you can enjoy the novel! it's really good and i think you'll have a lot of fun reading it if you enjoyed the webcomic as it is!

8-bit reviews: Diablo Immortal
Tumblr media
Probably the only review of Diablo Immortal you'll see that actually talks about gameplay and not just the villainous monetization.
TL;DR: A thoroughly miserable free to play ARPG that actively fought against me trying to derive any sort of enjoyment out of it. There are a couple of enjoyable things buried somewhere deep into the game, but it really really isn't worth the effort it takes to get there.
Diablo Immortal is a game that in theory I like quite a bit. I genuinely like the story that it has, and I can even really enjoy some of the somewhat simplistic combat systems on offer. The problem I find with it is that if you are invested in the story the free to play nature of the game seems to be actively working against the game at times. The combat can be enjoyable until the game forces you to engage in the same repetitive tasks over and over in an attempt to wrangle as much of your play time for its often times aggressively monotonous and uninteresting MMO style tasks. When the game is about the story dungeons the combat loop is a pretty decent affair, nothing mind blowing, but some nice straightforward combat arenas. These have issues sure, if you decide to have a look around the rather sparse environments and then engage in conversation with the NPC of the day you do run the risk of the enemies you cleared out interrupting the conversation and having to do it all over.
It's not a particularly deep action RPG, most of the story dungeons are simply hold down attack until everything between you and the map marker is dead, but that's fine, it doesn't need to reinvent the wheel. I know this is sold primarily as a phone/tablet game, so I don't know how much gameplay innovation that crowd is looking for. On the PC side of things it feels like a weird hybrid of mechanics from Diablo 2 mixed with Diablo 3. It lacks the skill tree you've seen in games like D2, and instead has a more varied move list like what was on offer from D3. It doesn't go quite as mechanically deep as D3 did, instead of offering variations to whichever skill you choose to use you just unlock slight upgrades at set levels. The class I played for instance, The Crusader, has an attack that is a flail attack that attacks in an arc in front of the character. As you level up you eventually unlock additional perks for that move that includes knock back, or at the end of your leveling it turns from a front-facing arc to a complete 360 swing. It adds the facade of depth, but it's honestly pretty straightforward. Heck, there's even an option on the inventory screen where the game with change your move loadout to fit into one of their pre-defined playstyles.
It's not like Diablo as a series has the most elaborate of control schemes, but this kind of feels like a further simplification of the combat from the bigger more feature rich entries. Perhaps it's simply because of the fact I played this entirely mouse and keyboard, maybe playing it with a controller or on a mobile device I wouldn't have noticed it quite as strongly. A lot of the moves are dependent are moving an in-game indicator to highlight the area where the attack is going to occur. It could be the semi-circle of death as mentioned above, or moving so an arrow engulfs whatever hellspawn you're currently fighting.
Admittedly I can't say this applies to all of the classes. I assume it does, but I only played as the Crusader for the length of the campaign. I can confirm it happens with the newest class: The Blood Knight, but as for the rest of the roster this is just speculation on my part.
Still, when the game was just advancing the narrative I didn't have much of an issue with the gameplay. It's fine to cruise through a game now and then, indulge in the simple pleasure of wholesale murder without needing dedicate your entire brain to the affair. It was when the game decided it needed to introduce, and force me to do some of the free to play MMO side-activities I felt the game was getting worse. Fair play to Blizzard they tried to make me care about the side-story of the shadow war between the Immortals and the Shadows, but it wasn't a thing I strictly needed to do to be able to advance the narrative so it got shunted off to the side. The Helliquary sure did have big-ish plot significance using cutscenes to set up a rogues gallery of ever-stronger demons who will one day rise to take over and destroy the world of Sanctuary. But that's post-game stuff that doesn't factor into the plot so the story of Lassal the Flame Whip and his cohort of other big demon nasties went largely unchallenged. Also they require you to play with other players, and I don't think my works WiFi was up to the challenge of trying to host seven other players. Which is unfortunate, if the Helliquary stuff, or the shadow war didn't require other players it could've made for an interesting subplot when the main plot slammed the brakes and made me do other stuff for way way too long.
There are several points when you're cruising along in the story when the game will throw up a wall to stop you from advancing any further in the narrative until you reach a minimum level. This happens way too much, I get why they're there, you got to try to entice the player into playing the other modes and so on you worked so hard on and put in your game, but it just started killing any enthusiasm I had going for the game. Because the interesting side-plot stuff I mentioned, the stuff with the Immortals, or the Helliquary don't give you any experience you need to be able to advance the story. Sure you unlock special rare super ultra fancy armors and titles and so on, but that's irrelevant if you just care about advancing the story.
What you do instead is you have to either go into "Challenge Rifts" which are special timed dungeons where you just massacre your way through a bunch of demons until profit. The problem with these is you require a special Diablo Immortal currency to even be able to do these Rifts, and as far as I could tell during my time with the game there is no actual way to earn these Diablo funbucks in game. In addition to the Challenge Rifts there's a variation of the Rifts that's harder, and allegedly offers better rewards, but nothing that really helps XP gain. So instead what you wind up doing is doing bounties, which are MMO inspired tasks that require you to go into one of the zones you've been to and then kill X amount of a given enemy type, or farm their loot. The problem with this system is that in addition to the gameplay being rather thin and pretty dull the amount of XP you acquire for doing these is a pitiably small amount. For reasons I can only speculate about Blizzard limits the amount of bounties you can do in a day, twenty-four of them. And you will more than likely have to do all twenty-four to get even slightly close to being able to get that level up. I assume this is here to pad the numbers and make player times look much more impressive than they would otherwise. It's maddening having to stop playing the story just to go do this MMO daily-grind hornswoggle, because it can take you literal days to be able to continue the story from where you left off. If you are a strictly free to play player that is.
I don't want to focus entirely too much on the monetization aspect of this game. There are plenty of other reviews, youtube videos, and just general muckraking over the monetization aspect of Diablo Immortal. Besides depending on your individual pain threshold you could in theory play this game to story end entirely free. If you decide to give in and feed the machine upwards of five bucks you get a battle-pass that gives you a slight edge in terms of being able to level up. It doesn't just throw free XP at you, but it gives you items that fill a meter in the battle pass that then gives you XP. But then that's how these free to play RPGs get you isn't it, make it just fun enough and just annoying enough that eventually it wears you down. I admit that it wore me down enough that I broke and spent a collective ten dollars on this, and even then the constant roadblocks of trying to go through the story kept showing up. If they just had a straight up option to buy an XP boost I would whine and wail about how this is what gaming has become, but towards the end of the game I would've bought it. I admit this, like I said I spent ten dollars in an effort to try to get more XP out of the game.
I don't know what exactly the six or seven in-game currencies even do in terms of gameplay. I looked at a list that had the various currencies in the game, and I got thoroughly confused trying to read the explanation for which platinum buys you what cosmetic, or which purple obol lets you buy which moon coin which does something in theory. At the very start of this before releasing Immortal on PC maybe it would've been beneficial to Blizzard to have a paid option where you can just start with some XP boosts or lower the absurd XP requirements for leveling, although I doubt that would happen because of the massive amounts of work that would require.
It's not very often that I play a game that I think could be a genuinely good time, but the game itself seems dead-set on fighting me tooth and nail to make sure things suck. It's not just the roadblocks in the plot or the game forcing you to engage in the free to play MMO crap, it's just riddled with small annoyances. The constantly respawning enemies, ensuring you never have a moment to just explore the environments, some of whom will be elite enemies who can really put you through the ringer. The boss fights with enemies with massive health bars that aren't exactly a challenge, they're just damage sponges, and if you die during a fight there's a greater than non-zero chance that that life bar will be reset to the start of the fight so you have to do that all over again.
The fact that sometimes your character will just get stuck an a seemingly impassable bit of air and be stuck trying to walk through the section while getting sniped by a little bastard demon just out of your field of vision. The fact that in the PC version at least the game had a very common habit of crashing the game to desktop with no warning. It happened the most during dungeons, but this game was extremely prone to crashing. Didn't matter if I was playing it on my computer with the 3090, or my laptop (that it ran surprisingly well on), trying to do things was often a coin toss about whether the game was going to crash or not.
Despite this however I do have things I actually like about Diablo Immortal. The relative pointlessness of the plot aside I did genuinely like the story. Even the optional stuff that I didn't really engage with, the Helliquary and the war between the Immortals and the Shadow seemed very well-written, and I'm curious to see where those plots are going (eventually, in a youtube video, I'm not playing this game any more). Also it's an extremely minor thing but I do appreciate the fact that you can actually move your character around using WASD instead of just clicking around on the map to move your character. It's basically the only feature I wish got taken from Immortal and put into Diablo 4.

MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE with CASYETTE, BARNS COURTNEY and PLACEBO in Stadium MK, Milton Keynes (SATURDAY, 21st May 2022) - review
Do you know the feeling when you have been waiting for something for so long it started to feel unreal the closer you got to it? Some sort of version of it wrapped tightly around me when I began my journey to Milton Keynes for My Chemical Romance's concert. Even though it's been a while since MCR have announced their comeback it didn't seem to sink in, like I was afraid to believe it, so it didn't hurt so much if it turned out to be some sort of elaborate deceit. More shows have been announced, I approached that with caution, even though I have bought another ticket. A song was released. A brand new song, and I was triple checking that it wasn't fake news. Especially that 'The Foundation of Decay' was just oh, so wholesome and made me feel excited about new music from one of my favourite artists, because, frankly, recently, nothing really did...
The day might have started with tears (as my anxiety was kicking in when I was in the train to Bletchley in Milton Keynes), but it finished with so much laughter that my stomach hurt (although it wasn't probably a laughing matter that the train to London was awfully full and we were all way into each others' personal spaces and I didn't have to hold on to anything half of the journey, because people around me were so close I wasn't going anywhere). There were some tears and much, much more laughter inbetween. Laughter was laced with relief and sense of belonging to this community of fantastic bunch of weirdos. Tears, tears came throughout the show, at various moments for various people, for various reasons. But what was truly beautiful, was the caring for one another, as soon as one was noticing someone was bawling their eyes out, they were on the case to console, hug, shed tears together, grab some water and calm down whoever needed it. So in a way the sadness, frustrations and negative feelings released with streams of tears were transformed there and then into something incredibly positive and surely cathartic. It was for me.
I knew there would be tears during the show, but I couldn't be sure when exactly. I wasn't very surprised to see the moment was 'I'm Not Okay (I Promise)'. Not my proudest moment, yet it didn't feel half as embarrassing as it normally would. It felt right to express it, let it out. And then: breathe. Until 'Famous Last Words' was in full swing and my eyes watered again.
But... on the other hand: I haven't felt that pure unobstructed happiness of the moment for a very long time. Concerts used to bring that feeling to me, every single time. Then something must have been broken and the feeling wasn't quite the same. It got incredibly close to that feeling when, after the pandemic started to ease a bit, the festivals started to happen and I could immerse myself in the live music again. I remember my cheeks hurt from smiling after Don Broco's headline show on Slam Dunk. But I digress.
When MCR started their show Gerard said that there was no plan, undertones of laughter in his voice were the proof that they did enjoy the glorious return to being a band. So no setlist set in stone, I believe one of the security guards mentioned they had four of them – so it was about to be a musical pick 'n mix and I was absolutely fine with that.
For a 'no plan' it was a genius idea to open with the newest in MCR's catalogue – 'The Foundations of Decay', where the last bit is a call to arms of sorts, a call awakening everyone from the slumber and a definite mood setter: 'GET UP COWARD!' was a thunder rolling through the Stadium MK. The ending of the set was as genius as its start – 'Helena' being the perfect closer, and oh, what a long wait it was to hear that song and scream those words: 'So long and goodnight!'.
It may not have been an anniversary of Frank being welcomed to the band, there may not have been special song dedications or Joan of Arc day or band's family member's birthday but it was still incredibly memorable and unique, because I could see the happiness and joy of band members that was lacking before they broken up, I'd dare to say it was sealed with a kiss: Gerard kissed Frank, the crowd exploded ecstatic and it felt that all fell into place, like it was like it used to, yet it was something brand new at the same time.
Tumblr media
There was however one special mention – Gerard paid tribute to Power Trip's late singer Riley Gale saying they wanted to ask Power Trip to go with them on reunion shows. Mind you, Power Trip is a crossover thrash/thrash metal band, so as he continued praising the band he said they would have probably said 'no' to joining them on tour, but then he added 'No, I think they would come'. And I think they just might have if they had a chance, because something tells me it would have been one of these experiences you didn't want to miss.
Some may say that this show wasn't as weird/exciting/fabulous as the others, because Gerard didn't come to the stage neither covered in fake blood (first show at MK Stadium), nor in mud (Glasgow, last show in UK). Just an “ordinary” look. It didn't make the show any less fulfilling though. It was all there: the smirks, the awkward banters that would quite often finish with Gerard's (or others' laughter), because he either lost the plot in the middle of the story or the story went to the place that surprised even him, the geeky weirdness, the madness painted on his face mid songs, Mikey's intense gaze, tiny little smirk on Frank's lips...
Tumblr media
Gerard commanded the crowd as he always did and could, like there was no abysmal gap between before break-up and now: fans got “told off” because they didn't click and lift up their phones with torches on (I believe it was before 'Summertime')
'I didn't have to tell them on Thursday, it happened naturally.' he rebuked. But was rather amused at the same time, which ruined the reproach a little.
Both him and Frank made the crowd step back when pushing and pressure became a bit too much for front rows (and for everyone caught inbetween).
I was glad they went ahead with that show, because Gerard had some issues with his voice (ah, good old self-deprecating humour, but truth be told he did sound a bit funny when he talked).
Twenty odd songs – as old as a band ('Our Lady of Sorrows'), a bunch that never made the cut and became part of 'Conventional Weapons' ('Make Room!!!!', 'Boy Division'), some played for the first time in a long time (longer than the others) – 'Bulletproof Heart' in this case (or as the band kept on calling it during the shows 'Trans Am', its original title), the must have's: 'Welcome to the Black Parade', 'I'm Not Okay (I Promise)', the ones that kept the party going: 'Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na)', 'DESTROYA', 'Mama'.
No distractions, full attention focused on what's in front of me and what's around me. Feeling whole for just a little while, fully embracing the fact that it wasn't just a phase.

The show was a treat, but so was the bunch of bands performing before MCR each day. The opening act was Cassyette and oh, boy I did not expect the energy and the power of the growl she had in her. Hands down she woke up whoever dared to sleep with her mighty vocals, energetic set and contagious positive vibes. A goth princess with a dash of lolitta and hell loads of charisma made the crowd move to the beat and enjoy her music.
Tumblr media
Then the mood shifted completely and Barns Courtney brought the indie rock vibes, rock and roll attitude and mixed the lot with light and dance elements of pop, some raw riffs and sweet, sweet range of his voice. Honey toned crooning was becoming loud like a bell in seconds, feel good vibes were just as contagious as the catchy tunes and the crowd was hooked.
Tumblr media
Then the special treat, at least for me, guest extraordinaire: Placebo. Absolute legends. Brian's haunting vocals were echoing through the stadium, paired with roar of guitars made me want to just take it all in. So mesmerising you couldn't look away. Such a mix of emotions too: beautiful sadness, yet strange joy were interlacing with Placebo's songs old and new.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Before the show I heard people complain a little, that Placebo didn't really interact with the crowd, just sang their songs and left, but that was not the case on Saturday 21st. The little smiles, the big ones and thank yous were all there. And a fascinating observation, that each (or almost) song had a guitar change.
Also the DJ sets between bands' shows provided by Sean Smith were so on point and brought back so many memories and were basically pure fire
