"Dia de los Muertos: La Resurrecciòn de Basquiat" ... aerosol and acrylic on wood. This piece will be auctioned @meca_houston October 20th! . . Beginning at the southwest and northeast corner I've embedded two worlds. One is the world you exist in now and the latter is the world to be. The crowned eyebrows are that of Basquiat, the renown elements of some of his signature pieces. I created them a bit jagged and childlike to resemble the style he used. The crowns are also there to channel the energy of Jean-Michel Basquiat. The eyes are the Om symbols which represent the trinity. Past, Present, and Future. The linear design in the background represents the various paths of life. The teeth represent eggs, for we give life and death with the words we speak and digest. The ankh represents eternal life through the feminine principle which I positioned at the 3rd eye. The horizontal part of the cross represents the division between the heaven and earth while the vertical part is considered to represent the two-way communication between these two realms. I chose to use the Spade for his nose. The Ace of Spade has been identified as a symbol for death. However, the spade's deepest desire is to unravel the secrets of life. The name "spade" actually comes from the Italian "spada," which means sword. There are many different interpretations of the Tarot suits, but swords, associated with the element of air, usually represent logical and rational thought, cutting through uncertainty and slicing truth away from falsehood. Historically, a spade was also a derogatory term for blacks in the early 20th century. The tattoo tear on his right eye is for the lost souls that were dear to him.
