Study Abroad: Learning About the World Inside Yourself

Study abroad is an adventure that most people have never experienced before. You’re on a brand new continent with just a few, if any, people you know. I know you may think “Oh it’s just a big vacation with a few classes”, but it’s so much more than that. Being left to your own devices, you start to learn about the most important territory there is for you to explore – yourself. You will have more time to think about the decisions you make and why you make them. You will meet people from so many different backgrounds on your journey. Every little conversation you have whether it be with the woman behind you in line at the gelato shop near the school, or the elderly man sitting beside you on the train, every conversation will make you re-evaluate yourself and your future.

We often set goals and aspirations for what we want to do based off setting we’re used to being around. For example, you were raised in a house full of doctors and all your parents friends are doctors, so you figure you’ll be a doctor too. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but the world is big and being dropped into a shocking new environment can trigger a new passion inside yourself that you never knew you had within you. You might want to change the entire course of your life because of the new horizons you have been exposed to. Change is a common theme of everyone’s study abroad trip. If you aren’t ready to change or be exposed to change, you may not want to study abroad because change is inevitable.

So far on my trip I have found myself reevaluating relationships I have with people at home, constantly asking myself questions like are they in my life for the right reasons, are they motivating me to move forward or holding me back, are they preventing me from becoming the person that I am meant to be? It’s okay to cut off or step back from things, people, and aspirations that no longer serve you. I found myself fall into a small depressive state when I realized I had a lot of people and ideas I needed to let go of because trying to hold on to them was not beneficial to me.

You will find yourself drifting to your parents more when you study abroad. It has been funny to notice how my fellow study abroad peers and I can go a whole semester in NY without talking to our parents much, but when you’re abroad you say you miss them 5 times a day. You need advice on how to do things you’ve never done on your own and that’s great. You are learning, becoming more independent, and also keeping your parents happy – that’s a win-win-win situation.  You are discovering the world and you don’t have to do that on your own. You have people who love, support, and miss you back home. That’s very important to remember because there are many times you will feel alone, but there’s a big world for you to explore and an even bigger one for you to explore within yourself.
