You know the drill by now. New Direct, New Mario games shown. I will talk about them here. There was plenty else I enjoyed, but with the Mario focus of the blog, I wanna give the three new Mario games my attention.

Donkey Kong Country Returns HD

I understand this one feels underwhelming for some, given DK has still not gotten a non-port or remake game on Switch, but to be honest, I like this. DKCR is a phenomenal platformer and with the 3DS content included, we now finally got a definitive version to point people to and I do think this gives this re-release a lot of value.

Not much else to say, because I doubt there will be much, if anything, new. Seems like a very Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD situation and I am okay with that.

Mario & Luigi Brothership

This was easily the biggest bombshell and yeah, what a way to start the Direct. The recent RPG and TTYD remakes made me hope that Nintendo may be working on a serious relaunch for the RPG branch of Mario, but to see them do it this soon is not something I could have ever seen coming.

Much is still unknown, but there is quite a bit we can look at, like the visuals! The occasional use of 3D models in the 3DS games made me wonder what a fully 3D M&L could look like and Brothership gives a very pleasing answer. Translating a series known for stellar sprite work into 3D is an uphill battle and Brotherhood manages to pull it off with both a really faithful translation of the series’ artstyle we always saw in official art and animation that’s as snappy and toony as it should be for a series like this.

Especially happy about the cutscenes. RPG already made me really want to see more like those and Brothership is very similar. Seeing the characters be this animated and not limited to their standard animation sets is a joy to watch and M&L is the perfect series to do a lot with that.

We got plenty of new character designs already too and those largely go for a tool theme. Very interested to see where this will take things, but just in terms of designs, I like em’. Connie seems to be the big hit among fans and I am firmly in that camp too. She’s adorable.

What we hear of the music is good stuff too. It’s to be seen if Yoko Shimomura is still working her magic, but I’d be surprised if she wasn’t brought back.

In terms of gameplay there is not much known yet, but I am very curious how they’ll do things. After the Baby Bros, Bowser, Dreamy Luigi and Paper Mario, we are back to just Mario and Luigi and that promises some expansions to the gameplay around just the two of them.

We already see hints of that with the jump and hammer attacks shown in the trailer, which involved Luigi helping out Mario for a bit of a team attack. They don’t seem to be Bros Attacks, since we see the Shell one we had since PiT at the end of the trailer, so maybe that’s just what jump and hammer moves are like now? We’ll see, I find the idea intriguing.

One thing up in the air is how the game will handle previous M&L specific characters. The series has been remarkably good about keeping those in the picture and making these games feel truly connected. Not a big deal if they treat this like a soft relaunch though, even if I would be perfectly content with even just a picture of a Shroob on a wall or something.

The titular ship and island theme makes me curious about the overall structure of the game. The most likely answer being that different areas are separated into islands you visit one by one. Perhaps there could be an exploration mechanic ala’ Wind Waker, or the very blatantly based on that section in Origami King, where you can sail yourself, find treasure and optional islands?

Only time will tell, but I am really excited and happy to see a series back that has been in a very unsure place for years.

Mario Party Jamboree

As far as realistic wishes go, Mario Party was my big one, so I am very pleased and it easily stands shoulder to shoulder with Brothership and away from Mario, Echoes of Wisdom and the Marvel vs Capcom Collection, for me.

Mario Party is one of my favorite series period and I even got quite a bit out of the pre-Switch NDCube games. 10 and Star Rush in particular I openly defend a lot. That said, my relationship with the Switch entries has been a rocky one.

I never really liked Super, it always felt like a pale imitation of the classic formula, that lacked a lot of what I like about the series and made many decisions I didn’t vibe with.

Superstars is much better, but still ended up being a tug-of-war of really good stuff and things I found still lacking, particularly in terms of content and how off a lot of minigames felt to control, compared to their original counterparts.

Jamboree is looking to be the Mario Party I have been waiting for all gen and it’s looking to fix all the problems I had with the previous games.

7 boards, 5 new and 2 returning. Never thought of a mix of old and new as an option, but it’s a move I can get behind. It’s a good way to get more boards in. I’d like it if they remade some of the GameCube boards for once, but I am not complaining. Hard to when Western Land is back baybeeeh!

The new boards all look good. It really seems like we are back to the 6-8 era approach of giving every board their own gimmick and that’s something I have been waiting to see again. The theming looks great too, especially the mall and race track ones, some creative stuff in there.

The roster surprised me too. Superstars had a laughably poor one and while Super had a large one, it made decisions I didn’t like, particularly relegating several established characters to NPC roles.

Jamboree does away with that, Birdo’s here, the Toads are back, which I really wanted and all around while I prefer less mook heavy rosters, I like the selection on offer here, especially Ninji and I’ll never say no to Boo or Shy Guy.

I also like what they did with Bowser. I love the guy, but his playable role in Super I feel robbed the series of something. His usual role is a big, irreplaceable part of the series, in both gameplay and vibe. This force who commands the power to massively shake up the game. Kamek in both function and presentation just didn’t offer a good replacement, so the new approach to have a Kamek created Bowser clone fill in is a significantly better compromise.

Ninji not being in the intro and bringing the roster up to an odd numbered 21 does indicate possible unlockables. I’d be happy if what we saw is what we get, but I’d never say no to say, Pauline, who is otherwise still strangely absent from the series.

What we saw of the minigames meanwhile looks good. A much better mix of zany antics and more grounded competition than Super had, which dialed back the slapstick adventure feeling a ton. The large number of minigames, seemingly all original this time, is also genuinely impressive.

We also got the promise of more modes, but so far the only one we got concretely introduced to is Koopathlon, which is blatantly Coinathlon from Star Rush brought online and escalated to 20 players. As someone who loved Coinathlon, I fully support this.

On top of that, I could already hear new voice clips, which is just that extra mile I appreciate. Mario spin-offs are no stranger to reusing those a ton and Party is one of the more notable examples of it, but something about the ones used post-10 I found especially grating, especially how much Superstars spams them in some minigames, so I am VERY pleased to get away from that.

On the whole, Jamboree feels like a lot of lessons were learned and they really want to make this one something special and I am very excited for that. This really makes the previous two games feel like test runs and I did hope they were just that. Especially Superstars which showed some real understanding of how to make a great Mario Party, but just wasn’t there yet in too many areas for my liking.

In general, a strong trio of titles, that really shows a surprising amount of gas in the tank for a system that is now in its twilight years. Along with the 2023 output for the series, I am extremely excited where things will go from here.

yzaaaa 😭 jackson's coming to my country HSJSSKJDKSDJFJDLEJJSJS like this is the first time ever one of my ults is actually going to be in my country </3 ( as far as kpop concerts/gigs go, only kard and vav have performed here if i remember it correctly ). anyway but i'm not going hdjsksks it's not being held in my state, like i could travel but it's lolla event, combined with all other western artists . (and. 💀 i don't wanna spend money on travel and the concert just to see jackson for like half an hour or something 😭 idk how lolla event works but i have no interest in others artists at all </3 ).

im just happy he's gonna come here 🥺 hope he enjoys his stay here and local birds make it so worthwhile he decides to do a concert in near future <3 and then got7 will come here and yug will pass on the baton to gyu who will make svt come here <3 it's all starting to make sense. ( 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 im so annoying lmao )

omg also the bear post yesterday <3 what are they? candies? i haven't seen those irl here hejsks not even gummy bears. ive had jelly candies but nothing in bear shape. they look so cute tho </3

NAURRRR omg in a way we're both watching ghibli together <33 that's so cool. arrietty was so good 😭, the idea of small people borrowing things which you'd probably throw away or don't pay attention to is so <33 ( the wholesome version of parasite BYEEEE 😭 wth did i just realise) i really liked how it ended, i haven't seen spirited away yet but now im gonna do it soon and annoy you with my thoughts on it hehe. my favorites,,, going to be predictable here and say whisper of the heart :3, my neighbour totoro and arrietty. my seiji brainrot is ongoing all the time.

HELLURR HSSJSJKDHD WHEN DID THAT DK MOMENT HAPPEN 😭😭 i haven't seen that one, YOU'RE SO VALID FOR THAT dino and woozi ( and hoshy </3 ) are so cute in all the _world performances i cri 😭 this particular one is my most favorite dino-woozi moment from bets, also i forgot to mention i enjoyed bets so much bc whole tour i got to see chestnut hair cheol <3 lichrally had time of my life the whole time 😭 his current hair is also one of my favorites but short hair coups is very dear to me </3

i had a fun time during the diwali festival holidays here <3 finally got around to watching a wong kar wai movie, chungking express bc my friend said they also wanted to watch it, we both were ready to become sad ( like yes movie is sad and lonely) but all we did throughout the movie was laugh 😭 idk why watching sad media with someone ends up becoming comedic to me, we both were more interested in first half of it rather than second one.

my oct was nice filled with festivities and media consumption. how was your october? btw do y'all celebrate halloween? im not a fan of it but love the fall vibes <3 trees don't change color here (except for the two northern states of the country) i don't get to see the autumn colors that much

When Their Family Loves You ~ Seventeen Reaction

S.Coups:

His smile grew as he walked through the front door and saw your eyes turn back to greet him, noticing his awkwardness. “You’re going to hate me,” he frowned, “but my parents have invited us round for dinner tonight.”

As your eyebrows knitted together, his heart sunk. “I thought we were going to go to that new restaurant in the city?”

“I know,” he whispered, “but they were so desperate to see you again, I just couldn’t say no to them. They really like having you around Y/N, as often as they possibly can.”

“It’s alright, I understand,” you assured him.

He reached across to take a hold of your hand, “I promise that we can go to the restaurant tomorrow, I really appreciate you making the effort for them.”

“If your parents like me, I have to make sure I keep it that way,” you smirked, “dinner can wait for another night, but your family definitely can’t.”

“You’re the best,” he smiled, “thank you for being so understanding for me.”

“It’s fine, I love time with your parents too.”

Jeonghan:

As his grandmother walked through the house ready to greet the two of you, Jeonghan opened up his arms ready to greet her, only for her to walk straight through to you. “Is your grandson invisible?” He questioned her.

She glanced back at him as she pulled away from you, “it’s just been a while since I had the chance o see Y/N, that’s all.”

“I’m your grandson,” he reminded her, throwing his arms around her fragile frame, “I better not be second best to Y/N otherwise I might have to break up with her.”

“Don’t you even think about it,” she scolded.

Your smile grew at how quick she was to leap to your defence, “are you really going to throw a tantrum about the fact that your grandmother hugged me first?”

“I’m always the one that she hugs first,” he tried to protest, although the two of you barely paid attention to what he said. “Would you prefer me to?”

“Don’t be silly,” she laughed, “you should be pleased that I adore Y/N so much.”

“Not when she becomes your favourite I shouldn’t.”

Joshua:

You knew from the second you met Joshua’s grandfather especially that he was going to keep a close eye on you and take you under his wing. “Does Joshua take good care of you; I hope that I raised him right?” He asked you.

Your head nodded instantly, smiling across at him, “you raised him perfectly, he takes very good care of me, I promise.”

“I’m glad to hear it,” his father grandfather cheered, glancing between the two of you, “but you know if he ever steps out of line, you come straight to me and I’ll sort him out.”

“I don’t think I need to worry about that,” you laughed.

His eyebrows raised quizzically back across at you, “I know what this kid can be like, he’ll act all innocent, but I watched him grow up don’t forget.”

“Don’t make me sound bad,” Joshua whined, pleading across to his grandfather, “the last thing I need is for you to scare her off.”

“Am I scaring you off?” He asked you, “please do say if I am.”

“Not at all, it’s nice to know I can turn to you.”

Jun:

The time of the week when Junhui called his family was always the most important to him, hanging onto their every word. “I don’t suppose Y/N is there, is she?” His mother suddenly asked midway through their conversation.

Junhui stared back at her on the screen in disbelief, “you’re supposed to be talking to me right now, Y/N’s in the other room.”

“Please,” she cooed, “I just want to see how she’s getting on. I’m still talking to you, it would just be nice to check in with Y/N as well, see how you’re doing as a couple.”

“You’re just digging a bigger hole,” Junhui called out.

As he walked into your office, you were surprised to see him stood in the doorway, telling you what was going on. “Are you sure she wants to see me?”

“She’s practically begging me to come and get you,” he huffed, “either she really hates talking to me, or she loves talking to you.”

“I hope it’s the first,” you teased, “I guess I’ve got five minutes to spare.”

“You’re a lifesaver, thank you for doing this.”

Hoshi:

When the mention of a family photo came, you quickly stood to one side, offering to take the camera and the photo of Soonyoung and his family. “No way,” a voice called out from the back, “Y/N, you are part of our family too.”

Your head shook as Soonyoung stared across at you, “I’m alright just taking the photo, I’m not really family just yet.”

“Yes, you are,” his uncle called out, stepping out from the family, “now, come on, we can’t take a photo without the whole family. Stand by Soonyoung and he’ll show you the way.”

“As long as you’re sure,” you timidly responded to him.

Soonyoung held his hand out to pull you into his side, “now do you believe me when I tell you that my family see you as one of our own?”

“I do,” you shyly laughed, “I never imagined that they’d be so quick to jump in and make me feel so welcome in your family though.”

“They adore you,” Soonyoung smiled, “which makes me adore you so much more too.”

“I’m just relieved they all like me too.”

Wonwoo:

As soon as he walked through the front door of his parent’s home alone, he could feel the stares of several members of his family darting across to him. “Is Y/N not coming?” His aunt called out in disappointment.

Wonwoo looked across the room at her, “she had something come up, so she wasn’t able to make dinner this time around.”

“The poor thing,” his other aunt added, sharing her sympathies. “I was really looking forward to catching up with her again tonight, you’ve found yourself someone great in Y/N too.”

“You can still catch up with me,” he tried to remind them.

Both of them nodded at his suggestion, “and we will catch up with you, don’t worry, but it would be nice to see the two of you, not just one of you.”

“Sometimes I really do feel as if I’m second best to Y/N,” he laughed as he walked further into the room, “do all of you wish that Y/N was here?”

“It would’ve been nice,” his mum smiled, “but we’re grateful to see you at least.”

“Grateful? I guess that does the job.”

Woozi:

Your attention was caught as soon as you walked through the front door by a delicious smell that came from the kitchen. “Hi,” Jihoon smiled as he spotted you walking through to see what was going on in the kitchen.

You peered past his shoulder to see what he was doing, “something must be seriously wrong for you to be baking here.”

“Blame my parents,” he smirked, “you shouldn’t have enjoyed my mother’s dessert so much because she’s sent me the recipe so that I can make it myself, just for you.”

“Well, that was really kind of her,” you noted.

Jihoon’s head shook in rejection to your comment, “she knows that I can’t bake, there’s no way that I can make it as well as she did for you.”

“Can I help you then?” You asked, reaching past him to place one of the aprons around your neck, “together we can replicate it, can’t we?”

“I’m supposed to do this by myself,” he sighed, “she’ll just tell me that I failed.”

“She doesn’t have to know we made it together, does she?”

DK:

You could tell that something was wrong as Seokmin pulled you to one side at the family dinner, letting go of a heavy sigh. “What’s going on?” You quizzed as soon as the two of you had found some space with no one else around.

He frowned across at you, rolling his eyes at himself. “I just feel like everyone is ignoring me and talking to you a lot.”

“That’s not true,” you assured him, “they’re just making the effort to get to know me, I’m sure that they’re not intentionally ignoring you, they’re your family Seokmin.”

“Which is why they should be talking to me,” he grumbled.

You reached forwards and took a hold of his hand, “you’re overthinking all of this, they’re doing nothing wrong, and neither are you, it’s all fine.”

“I know I probably sound stupid,” he admitted in a quiet tone, “I guess I just didn’t think they’d get on with you as well as they do.”

“Is it a good thing?” You asked, “that they get on with me so well.”

“Of course, it makes me very happy to see.”

Mingyu:

He’d heard murmurs of your name around the table for most of the night as he attended his usual family dinner. “Where is she?” His mother asked once he eventually asked why you were such a hot topic for the evening.

He frowned back across at her, “she wasn’t able to make it, I didn’t realise it would be such a big deal for you all.”

“We like her,” his mother defended, trying to keep Mingyu calm, “we like seeing the two of you together, it’s been a while if I’m honest since I last saw you alone.”

“I know that you’re all big fans of her,” he frowned.

Several heads around the table nodded, “you’ve done well for yourself Mingyu, you should be pleased that we’ve all taken such a liking to Y/N.”

“I am glad you all like her, but you all seem more disappointed that she’s not here than excited that I am her,” he informed them all.

“Don’t be silly,” his mum laughed, “we’re all thrilled to see you.”

“It’s about time you told your faces that.”

The8:

Minghao was unable to hide his smile as he passed you the card that had come through the front door a few moments prior. “What is it?” You questioned, unfolding the card to see that it was a wedding invitation.

He sat down beside you, “my cousin has invited us both to her wedding and written your name in massive letters too.”

“She must really want me to come,” you joked, “I have to admit your cousin was one of my favourites when I met them all. It means a lot that my name is even on the invite.”

“My family adore you; they want you to go,” he hummed.

You closed the invite back up, turning to face him with a smile. “Well, I can’t be letting them down, if you want me to go with you that is.”

“Absolutely, my family would kill me if I showed up to the wedding without you anyway,” he laughed, “I should probably send the RSVP.”

“I’m meeting her tomorrow,” you replied, “I’ll give it to her then.”

“I swear you see my family more than me sometimes.”

Seungkwan:

As you unwrapped the present that his parents had bought you for your birthday, you couldn’t help but stare down at it speechless. “It’s better than what I’ve got,” Seungkwan sighed as you lifted the jewellery from the box.

Your head shook. “That’s not true, I love what you bought me,” you quickly tried to assure him, “both presents are great.”

“They’ve never even spent that much on me for my birthday before,” he sighed, “my parents really must like you to spoil you as much as they have done.”

“Am I sensing a bit of jealousy in you?” You asked him.

His head shook, trying to keep himself together, “I just feel like my parents have even outdone me, I’m your boyfriend, I should buy you the best presents.”

“None of the presents matter to me,” you promised to him, “what matters to me is that I get to spend my birthday with you, and not the things you’ve bought.”

“You don’t have to make me feel any better,” he smiled, “I understand.”

“I’m being honest, I promise you, don’t stress.”

Vernon:

As you walked into his parent’s house, you were surprised when you saw a huge photo of you and Vernon up on the wall. “It’s big,” you whispered, taken aback by the large canvas you had no idea to expect.

“You’re not wrong,” Vernon whispered, equally confused as you were by the large print that was hung for all to see.

“You’ve seen it then,” his mother smiled, wondering where the two of you had gotten to, “what do you think? I just had to get the photo framed, it’s such a lovely one.”

“I’m sure all the visitors will definitely see it,” Vernon frowned.

His mother’s smile continued to grow beside the two of you, “I just wanted everyone to see how in love our son is and how great Y/N is too.”

“No one is able to miss when they walk into the house,” Vernon sighed, struggling to take it all in, “it really sends out a clear message.”

“That’s what I wanted,” she cheered, “people can see how happy the two of you are.”

“They’ll definitely be able to see that by the size of it.”

Dino:

When his father pulled him to one side, Chan knew he was in trouble, but he never quite imagined the trouble that it would be. “Your mother is gutted that Y/N couldn’t make it tonight,” he sternly told his son.

Chan could only shrug back at him, “I’m not really sure what you want me to do about that, Y/N’s just been busy.”

“She thinks you’ve fallen out,” his dad sighed, “maybe just go back in there and give her a bit of reassurance that things between you and Y/N are alright.”

“But they are, she doesn’t need assuring,” Chan groaned.

His father sighed, tapping his hand against Chan’s shoulder. “You know what she can be like sometimes, just humour me and calm her nerves.”

“Even if anything had happened between Y/N and I, it would be none of her business,” Chan fumed, turning back to walk into the living room.

“She loves her,” his father whispered, “it would break her heart if you separated.”

“It’s a good job that we’re not separating then.”

Coups doesn’t really ever think about dating

His life is just a whirlwind of responsibilities that never really seems to end

Anytime the thought crosses his mind, he just reminds himself that he doesn’t really have the time

As the leader, everything falls back on him so keeps any other distractions outside of Seventeen minimal so the other boys can always depend on him no matter when or where it is

But lately

He feels like he’s been able to breathe easier

Seventeen is successful

All the boys have grown and are so responsible and able to handle most things on their own

So Coups is slowly having some responsibilities lifted from his shoulders

And one day he realizes that the idea of dating doesn’t seem so impossible anymore

But who would he even date?

He’s pushed that idea so far out of his head that he hasn’t even considered whether he would date anyone around him

He’s embarrassed to admit it, but there’s a part of him that’s really shy about things like that so he doesn’t even know if he has it in him to go out and date

And there’s another part of him that he’s even more embarrassed of that really wants a magical love story, a spark

He just doesn’t feel like he has that with anyone near him

And then one day, he runs into you

“Oh my god, Seungcheol?”

He sighs, expecting a fan, readying himself to be bright and sociable

But he knows you

The two of you went to school together years ago

“[Y/N]?”

“Seungcheol, it is you! This is so great!”

You exclaim and then pull him into a hug

He happily returns it, feeling a familiar warmth from seeing someone from his past

“This is insane, I honestly didn’t think I was ever going to see you again!”

“Oh yeah” he looks down awkwardly. “I’ve been busy...”

“Well yeah, you’re only the leader of one of the biggest kpop groups out there!”

He knows that, of course he does

He’s worked long and hard to be S.Coups of Seventeen

But when you say it, he feels shy for some reason

“Oh yeah... I guess”

You laugh happily

“Hey, we have to catch up sometime! When are you free?”

Seungcheol rattles off his schedule for the next week

You find a free spot that you share, grab his number, and make the plans

It’s lunch at a restaurant you had never been to before

You sit awkwardly at the table you grabbed and wait anxiously for Cheol to show up

When he does run in, he stops at the entrance to look for you

When he spots you, he pauses, taking time to straighten out his clothes and brush out his hair

He clears his throat and then calls to you

You feel relief fill your veins when your eyes land on Cheol

You wave at him, a grin spread across your face

He rushes over to plop down in the seat across from you

Once you two catch up on what’s been going on, there’s a bit of a silence

He’s worried that that’s it

You two just had those few good moments and now you won’t have anything to talk about anymore

But then you bring up a story from your school days

“Remember that time, Minhyuk was rushing to get to class, but he wanted something to drink first...”

“And his hand got stuck in the vending machine???”

“Yes!”

You both laugh and bring up more memories and laugh more

It eventually opens up more conversation

And soon speech just flows easily between you two

Then Seungcheol looks down at his phone and realizes you two have been sitting there for hours

And to him that’s the sign

There’s a spark

“Hey, [Y/N], do you maybe want to get dinner sometime?”

“Are you asking me on a date Choi Seungcheol?”

“Yes, how about it?”

“I think I’d like that very much”

Dating Seungcheol is easy

He makes it easy

He’s attentive and caring and selfless and mature

Like seriously it feels like something so incredible and beautiful

One night, Cheol is walking you home and you voice your thoughts out loud

He laughs

“Are you seriously having thoughts like that because you have a good boyfriend?”

You pout

“Seriously, Cheol, I’m just asking, why are you so good to me?”

He shrugs “Cuz I’m dating you?”

“I know that but... I don’t know”

He smiles and pulls something out of his pocket before handing it to you

“Because you’re special and you deserve it”

You look down at what he handed you and your heart stops

It’s a little paper flower

Your mind gets taken back to high school

It was an overnight school trip

Seungcheol had actually been able to come on that one, which was rare due to his schedule when he was a trainee

So everyone was excited to have him come along, the whole class celebrated for him to actually be able to come on the trip

You wanted to be excited too in order to be a good classmate

But

You’d been having a rough week

Things went wrong with friends, family, grades

So you were kind of off the whole trip

You can’t even sleep

So you get up in the middle of the night and sneak out and walk around outside

It’s really pretty

There’s a forest and a river

The stars are clear

You sit on the bank of the river and watch the stars sparkle in the reflection of the water

You jump when you hear someone walking behind you

“Hello? Is someone there?”

You can hear your voice shaking, and you feel dumb

“Relax, [Y/N], it’s just me!” Cheol’s bright voice sounds out from the darkness behind you

“Oh, hi Seungcheol, what are you doing out here?”

“I just went to use the bathroom. What about you? Why are you out here?”

“Couldn’t sleep”

You shrug and turn back to the river, embarrassed at the feeling of tears filling your eyes

Cheol’s shoulder brushes against yours as he sits next to you

“Wow, the view of this river is something else, can’t get this back home”

You shake your head to try and disguise your gesture of wiping tears off your face with your sweatshirt sleeves

There’s a moment of silence

“You don’t have to be embarrassed of crying, [Y/N]”

You freeze at his words

“Sorry if I’m making you uncomfortable, it’s just that... you’re not very good at hiding it”

You laugh a little despite the fact that tears are now pouring out of your eyes

“You wanna talk about it?”

“I don’t wanna burden you Seungcheol”

“It won’t be a burden, [Y/N], I promise”

So you let it all out

You tell him everything that was bothering you

And he listens silently as he folds a piece of paper

Once you’re done talking, he lets you cry it out

“I’m not really good at the whole advice thing sometimes, I’m not sure what to say to help you best”

He grabs your hands and and places the paper in them

“But I will tell you this: I know you’re a strong person and even if you feel like you can’t take it, you can lean on me for help!”

“When did you learn to do this Seungcheol?”

You stare at the paper he’s folded into a flower

“Oh I can’t remember, I just do it sometimes”

You look up at him

He laughs a little at your expression and leans forward to wipe the rest of your tears off your face

“Why are you doing this, Seungcheol?”

“Doing what?”

“Being so... nice to me. We’re not really friends... I mean, it’s just... we’ve never been super close”

Cheol grins at you

“Because you’re special and you deserve it”

When your mind comes back to the present

You look up to see that Cheol has walked a few paces ahead of you

“You kept this from all the way back in high school? I thought I had lost it”

“You did,” Cheol laughs. “You dropped it on the trail back to the cabins, I snatched it up afterwards”

You stare at the flower, admiring how it’s held its shape all these years

You feel tears start to well up in your eyes

You quickly deflect by making a joke

“So Choi Seungcheol has been harboring a huge crush on an old classmate this whole time”

He shakes his head and grins at you, grabbing your hand to continue your walk

After that, Cheol is your whole world

You feel childish but you believe y’all were fated to be together

You put in the effort to spoil him as much as he does for you

You know he has a lot of pressure with being a leader

So you become a safe haven for him to rant out his problems

And you always do little stress relievers for him: back rubs, spa nights, tv binges with tons of junk food

You buy him little accessories and in-ears for him to use on stage

Sometimes you cook dinner for the boys so they don’t have to worry about it

The other members fawn over you constantly

You and Cheol develop this ridiculous sense of humor that only the two of you get

You’re just a couple of nerds together

Whenever you’re at events together, he always has his arm around you

When you attend their concerts, he always greets you by running up, wrapping his arms around your waist, spinning you around and pecking your lips

Like I said, your relationship is easy

The two of you just click well

It’s a long time in the making but it’s a beautiful romance that is so worth it

SVT’s Reaction to Being Outed for Dating a Guy

A/N: I’m perfectly fine with it, here you go bub!! And I hope fans of all pronouns/identities feel welcome on my blog, so if y’all want to request more pride stuff or specifically for fanboys, they/them fans, etc, then feel free to! Reaction & drabble requests are still open~

S.Coups

Wbk he’s 100% supportive of the LGBTQ+ community, so he’s definitely aware of how Korea thinks of his relationship and doesn’t care about Korea’s opinions of him as an LGBTQ+ person. He still does a good job at hiding his relationship for his boyfriend’s sake, though.

Honestly, being the best leader he is, Cheol is the one with the situation under control... on the outside. He deals with the company and the media really well, but on the inside he’s an emotional mess because he’s worried about how his bf would react to the whole ordeal. Again, it isn’t the pride stuff he’s worried about; he cares for his boyfriend and wants him to feel safe after their relationship is exposed.

...Will smother his bf with love once they're free from the drama tho lol

Jeonghan

Jeonghan’s worried at first but he quickly gains the confidence that everything will be alright as long as he and his boyfriend maintain a healthy relationship. He’s not going to let the company tear them apart, much less “fans” and the public! He meets with the company early on to get everything sorted out and confirms his relationship (if his bf approves) so they don’t need to worry about being too secretive about it.

And after all the professional stuff? He lowkey owns it tbh. His way of dealing with the media is holding his boyfriend’s hand in public to show that “yes, we’re dating; your opinions aren’t going to change anything!” What a king.

Joshua

Because he’s from the USA, Joshua would be the most comfortable in this situation compared to the others. He's definitely worried and shocked, especially when the company says they need to talk to him about dating rumors. But his opinion is swayed by how his boyfriend feels, rather than the opinion of literally everyone else who doesn’t have a say in the relationship 🙃

If his bf doesn’t want to make the relationship super public, he understands completely; Josh will definitely want to show him off though! ;) A v caring man who probably posts the occasional selfie with his boyfriend. His mans should expect some guitar serenades too!

Jun

When the company calls him in to talk about dating rumors, he makes sure his boyfriend is with him, or at least tells his bf about how the company wants to proceed. He gets through everything while trying to be strong and not to show any doubts he has.

But c’mon, he would be the one that’s super giggly and obvious about his relationship after he’s outed. He posts funny pics with his boy on Weibo whenever they’re chilling together! (As Jun’s bf... you’re gonna have to tolerate that lmao.)

Hoshi

Honestly doesn’t really care about the company’s opinion that much. Probably posted pictures of one of the places they went on a date at and then someone got suspicious. He’s more concerned about his group members though, so he asks for their opinions and advice before even asking out his now-boyfriend. (Probably still asks for advice after he starts dating said boyfriend lol)

He’s worried about carats and Korea’s opinions, but he’s also not gonna let that stop him from loving and appreciating his boyfriend! His mindset is that they’ll get through it, and they’ll get through it together.

Wonwoo

His big brain is very aware about how he/his relationship is be viewed by the locals. Writes a statement explaining the situation if it was revealed in a really rude way (*cough* Dispatch). Ultimately he handles the media and rumors really well!

In terms of his members and boyfriend... he needs a lot of validation. He’s worried for sure, so he needs a lot of love and reassurance that he’s doing enough to keep his bf and the group safe. Hides from the media until the rumors die down or gets comfortable enough to show his relationship in public.

Woozi

Jihoon’s pretty responsible, but he knows that if he’s outed, he’s outed. He talks with the members about it since he’s worried how it will affect them and his boyfriend. (If his man is a celebrity like an actor/idol too... hoo boy he's so stressed.😢) He definitely worries that the media will harass his boyfriend or knetizens will ask him to leave the group.

Once the members and boyfriend comfort him and give him a lot of love, he’s calmed and is back to being himself! Keep his relationship mostly private, but probably writes a love song that carats just know was inspired by his boyfriend!

He could care less about the company or the general public; what’s important is his bond with his boyfriend, his members, and carats (in that order). Mr. Sunshine Seokmin is emotional about the drama happening. He loves his boyfriend with all his heart and it shows, so he’s scared his bf will leave him out of fear or stress :(

He understands if his bf wants to break up and talks with him about it, but to his joy that won’t be the case!! After the stress passes, he’s still careful about how much of their relationship is shown to the public. But he’s definitely open to pda if his bf is okay with it! He’s excited to share his life an experiences with his boyfriend and to celebrate theirs too.

Mingyu

The company brought up dating rumors to him pretty quickly because of his previous ‘scandal’ and they want to prioritize his safety and avoid another once. But once he’s outed, he knows there’s no going back, so he goes with the flow and starts posting pictures of him and his boyfriend with no fear!! He either posts on his Instagram account if they ever start using their accounts again, or he lets his bf post pics wherever he wants. He’s cautious, but also, who cares?!

He tries to separate his relationship from Seventeen as much as possible, but doesn’t shy away from the idea of doing a Vlive with just him and his bf. Definitely a couple trying to show Korea that love is love and Mingyu can date whoever tf he wants!!!

The8

Minghao’s super professional about everything and cautious because of Korea’s views. But if there is a slip-up (maybe during or after a date where someone snaps a picture), the moment he sees that someone has found out about his relationship, he talks about it with his bf. The members are told right after and he makes plans to talk to the company.

His priority is his boyfriend’s privacy and safety, especially if his bf isn’t a celebrity; Minghao’s super protective and is more cautious the next time(s) they go out together. If the relationship is eventually confirmed, it’s intentional and to show that he’s living his best life and that carats should too! (Though he probably won’t say anything about his relationship other than that.)

Seungkwan

He’s fine at first since the meeting with the company went well (thanks to Seungcheol's support) and the company suggests they reveal the relationship. But right after, Seungkwan’s an emotional wreck... there are times he feels like crying because of people leaving super inconsiderate comments and other times he feels enraged because of negative comments about his boyfriend. He takes a break from social media because of this.

Once the rumors died down and carats accept his relationship, he’s gushing about his man whenever he gets the chance! Interviewers are always asking him about what it’s like to be LGBTQ+ in a kpop group, but he always redirects the conversation to be about his boyfriend and how happy they both are!! I refuse to believe Seungkwan will be anything less than an amazing, caring boyfriend despite the whole situation.

Vernon

Vernon’s another member that’s more focused on how his boyfriend feels about the situation, rather than the company/Korea/fans’ reaction. It's scary for him to be outed like that, but his family (biological & svt) is very supportive of him and his sexuality! He would ask for a lot of advice from other LGBTQ+ idols (including fellow members, if they happen to be dating a guy at the time) for how they dealt with the initial wave of drama and criticism.

Just another boy that’s chill on the outside but is gonna need a lot of love to get through it all :’) Keeps most of his relationship off of social media, but if his boyfriend wants to post something, he’s okay with that!

Dino

He’s nervous mostly about the company’s reaction and the status of his relationship. He trusts that carats will be supportive, but he’s worried that the company or bf will react badly, so he talks a lot with the group first about his relationship even before he’s outed! He also discusses everyone’s reactions with his boyfriend. He wants to handle it well to show he’s capable, especially to his younger siblings & family, so the only person to know if he’s really feeling stressed is his boyfriend and maybe the members!

After being outed, he still wants to keep his relationship private. He doesn’t stress to much if he’s caught out with his bf once or twice, but he values his privacy and will only show his bf off if they are both in a secure point in their relationship.

Positive Side: Oml y’all should honestly get married I’m not joking. First all, you both have this sweet, nurturing and welcoming aura to you that makes everyone feel comfortable to be around you. When your with the Ateez members, you and Hongjoong are mama and papa duck always looking out for them, giving them advice when they need it most and spread love to them everyday to make them feel better. When it’s time to go to work, that’s when your sharp strong personality side comes out and give the people what they love. This man is a song composer himself and would be super happy if you would help him write songs for the album. He would look like a proud husband when you sing the lyrics back to him on key while staring into his sparkly eyes. For his solo debut, he made a song out of your name and got to perform it on a few music shows. Lastly, you both would love to give back to the community doing protests to support all kinds of movements, donate to charity and you both even adopt a stray puppy from the animal shelter and name her snowflake. Together, you both love being surrounded by your loved ones and when they see you two together, they inspire to find a future partner like you.

Negative Side: One thing that you two have in common that I notice is that you both are people pleasers and sometimes that can back fire if your putting to much energy into one person that doesn’t share the same power back. For example if one of your friends all of a sudden we’re talking about you behind your back, you would try to avoid confrontation as much as possible and brush it off pretending everything is fine. When stuff like that happens to the other person, they want to know thier name, address, who they’re associated with, etc... So they can handle the situation. Positive Side: Adorable sweethearts sharing the same love for music. Taemin is getting to that age where soon he wants to find his potential wifey which is you. He admired how charming you can be when your meeting people and how you can manage in any social event making sure everyone feels at ease. He noticed one time you were singing to one of your baby cousins to sleep singing replay and from that moment on, we was whipped with a capital W. He would no mind pulling all nighters with you if it mean’t he can stay with you much longer. Lastly, your both each other’s biggest fan throughout your entire careers. Your always in the crowd smiling and screaming “Taemin fighting” or “Taemin hubby, good luck.” the loudest in the crowd.

Negative Side: Now your fights are very rare because both of you are very soft people and don’t like starting arguments for no reason. I would say the only issue would be that you two tend to keep your problems and worries to yourself instead of bothering the other person about it. Taemin in this case tends to hide it more often because with him being an idol they have to keep that bright image and not show they’re weak sides all the time infront of fans. Sometimes it’s okay, but when it comes to you, he wants to show only his best and bright sides infront of you instead of the bad and the ugly.

But..:Once you’ve started to notice the pattern of Taemin sad facial expressions and his sad tone of voice, you grasp him by the hand gently and decide to pull him to the side asking him if he’s actually okay. It might to him awhile to open up, but once he eventually bursts all his emotions towards you, it’s the most heart breaking yet beautiful sight to witness because that helps build your level of trust together. He starts to feel more comfortable sharing his hardships with you and would only actively listen to your advice so he can face that obstacle head strong.

Positive Side: Princess and Prince vibes. You two are radiating singing sunflowers that loves to shower people with happiness, peace and smiles. At first, people kinda mistook you for twins almost because of how much your personalities are alike and how good your telepathy is. That was all until you two started hanging out more becoming more lovey dovey with each other by gazing into each other eyes, linking arms with each other and even creating your own alien language. Only you two would understand each other’s humor and would make up silly couple handshakes that would have all the seventeen members shook for. Knowing how musically talented you both are, Dk would try to convince woozi to be help write and compose songs for every comeback wanting you to share your talent with the world right beside him. Negative Side: It’s not a big problem, but once you both start dating and your schedules become more busy, it’s hard to stay apart. Your both very loving and affectionate people so it is bound to happen when you desire phone calls, hugs and kisses from each other everyday. When your not together, your moods become a lot gloomier than usual and it’s hard for the both of you to continue on working or being by yourself without seeing each other at least once a day. Your obsessions of each other is not to the extreme, but you both still feel very lost and alone without each other.

But..: You have very good patience and once your able to meet up with DK the next time, your probably not gonna leave his place until the next week. Those reunions with him make it much more rewarding to wait around for and love become much more stronger than before. For the whole day, reserves time on his schedule for you and will take you anywhere and do anything with you as long as it made you happy. Xcalibur summary (Part 1)

SPOILER ALERT: If you are someone who has tickets to go watch Xcalibur, or you intend to go and watch, then I highly suggest that you do not click under the cut. This is my attempt to piece together the musical from whatever is available online for those who have not or will not manage to catch it. My understanding of Korean is at best minimal, so my understanding is from the summaries that have been floating around (including the summary from the program book), and guesswork from watching the musical.

I watched the first two shows that DK performed, namely 19 June and 22 June, which shall be referred to as Day 1 and Day 2 respectively. I also watched the Kai show on the 21 June, which featured pretty much a completely different lineup from Day 1 and Day 2.

Cast (Arthur / Lancelot / Morgana / Merlin / Guinevere / Ector )

Day 1: DK / Um Ki Joon / Shin Young Sook / Son Jun Ho / Min Kyung Ah / Lee Jong Moon

Day 2: DK / Lee Jee Hoon / Jang Eun Ah / Son Jun Ho / Min Kyung Ah / Lee Jong Moon

Kai Day: Kai / Park Kang Hyun / Shin Young Sook / Kim Joon Hyun / Kim Sohyang / Cho Won Hee

As a matter of background, please do note that DK is triple cast in the role of Arthur together with Kai (not the EXO member, musical actor whose real name is Jung Ki Yeol) and Kim Junsu (Xiah Junsu). Both Kai and Junsu happen to be (very) well regarded musical actors, so let’s just say that there is pretty much no way that DK can match up to the two of them given that he has zilch experience, and I don’t think anyone with background expects him to match up. In addition, as a broad generality, the rest of the cast is well regarded, and it is established that he is the youngest of the lot. I suspect every other main cast is at least five years older than him (with the youngest of the rest I think being Min Kyung Ah), and way way more musical experience.

So really, he has his work cut out for him, and I am saying this as someone who runs a DK vocal appreciation account. That said, Arthur is the lead role in a big budget musical “world premiere”, so he really can’t afford to suck.

I repeat: If you intend to watch the musical, I suggest you do not spoil yourself.

Due to the length of this post, I will not be embedding the videos like I normally do. There exists more videos, but I want to get this out first.

ACT 1

0 Prologue

Ensemble

Opening of the musical where masked ensemble members come on stage to do some chanting (think in relation to the Xcalibur). Looks quite ritualistic.

1 A Bond that Cannot be Broken

Arthur / Lancelot / Ensemble

Arthur runs onto stage (for DK fans, the first guy who runs on to stage with the sword is Arthur, because I couldn’t tell until later). Arthur and Lancelot have a duel (not serious). Don’t recall who wins, but in the end after Arthur and Lancelot are done fighting, some ensemble actor (who is a village boy) kicks Arthur in the butt. Arthur gets angry and brandishes his sword at the ensemble actor. There is some further provocation between the ensemble actor and Arthur, but after interference by Ector (Arthur’s adoptive papa), and the other ensemble actors (village boys), the tension is diffused.

Arthur breaks into song, which I think generally introduces his life (as a ordinary village boy), with his friends and his adoptive papa. Generally a merry mood, with him drinking a few times out of his cup. He appears to be great friends with the village boys (including Lancelot). At some point Lancelot takes over singing the song. The spoilers are right in that he gets kissed once on his cheek (he falls over), and then I believe the same ensemble actress kisses him on the lips. While shocking when watched the first time, it’s really quick (and contrary to the image you are likely imagining, he has both village boy and girl friends).

Arthur ends the scene on the shoulder of two other village boys with the light shining on him.

2 Telling of a Tale

Merlin

Lightning strikes, and most of the villagers disperse. Arthur asks what is going on, and Ector (adoptive papa) basically knows that it’s Merlin who is coming.

Merlin sings. I believe the song is telling Arthur that he is destined to be king. Merlin is a very composed character, I feel, and makes hand movements wherein basically the fate of Arthur is projected (namely for him to be king etc). Effects were cool.

3 My Flesh, My Blood, My Skin, My Bones (on DK international twitter, I think people translated it to I Am Mine)

Arthur

Arthur gets angry and does not want to accept what Merlin is saying and gets angry.

4 World on Fire

Camelot ensemble is living in fear, and then the Saxons end up barging in and finishing them off.

5 Where Are You Now

Morgana

Morgana is Arthur’s half sister, and appears to be a nun. Believe she is mourning her fate, and asking where Merlin is, but I will admit I didn’t get much more than that. From information that I have seen subsequent, it seems that Morgana is Merlin’s former disciple.

I think at the end of this scene, the Saxons crash into Morgana’s room, kill the other person who was in her room, and Morgana manages to save herself by saying that her father is Uther Pendragon. Not sure if they believe her, but the Saxons spare her life and take her prisoner.

6 Telling of the Tale Reprise

Merlin

Arthur runs to the forest and prays. Probably asks why his fate is this, can’t believe it etc. Ector shows up, and I believe confirms that he is not Arthur’s biological father (giving credence to what Merlin says that he is destined to be king, and he is Uther Pendragon’s son). Arthur is angry. I am also being led to believe that Ector tries to convince Arthur to listen to what Merlin has to say.

Merlin is singing the song, probably showing Arthur his fate. I think there is some suggestion that Arthur has some “dragon blood” and “dragon rage” in him. Many animations of parts of a dragon appear, in which Arthur swings his sword at the animations that appear. In the end he falls on the floor when the animation of the dragon eye appears.

Merlin probably tells Arthur about how the Saxons are threatening Camelot or something. Merlin takes away Arthur’s sword and I think tells Arthur to go pull the xcalibur out of the stone.

7 The Man You’d Have Me Be

Arthur

At some point, it seems that Arthur is buying what Merlin is saying. Then the rock formation with the xcalibur sword in it appears.

Arthur scales the rock (while singing) with the intention of trying to pull the sword out of the stone. Villagers are starting to gather below the rock formation.

Arthur fails to pull the xcalibur out of the sword twice (to giggles and then more giggles from the onlooking villagers below).

8 Let the Sword Make This Man

Lancelot / Ensemble

Merlin tells Arthur something, and then the xcalibur slides out easily without Arthur needing to exert force at all.

Arthur is in awe of the sword, but Lancelot doesn’t seem to be very happy (and Lancelot is the one singing the song mostly). Villagers seem to be in awe of the sword too, and have fallen to their knees to pay respect to the king (except Lancelot).

There is a moment of suspense when 5 or 6 ensemble actors (to be knights) sing, and then there’s a pause and everyone looks at Lancelot who hasn’t sung yet. And then Lancelot breaks into song, gets on his knees. And then the joker asks to be knighted right away – and Arthur does. Arthur and Lancelot hug. Then Arthur goes to Ector and they hug too.

Arthur celebrates with Ector, and then Merlin. Believe Arthur hands the xcalibur to Ector.

9 If He Were Standing Here

Guinevere / Arthur

Guinevere shows up and is in awe that someone managed to pull the xcalibur out of the stone.

I believe Arthur asks Guinevere what she would say to the person who managed to pull the xcalibur from the sword if he were standing here. Guinevere doesn’t know that Arthur was the one who managed to pull the xcalibur from the stone.

Guinevere is excited that someone managed to pull it out of the stone, that is clear enough.

Towards the end of the song, Ector comes and gives the xcalibur back to Arthur, to the shock and horror of Guinevere. Who makes an excuse to run away, but Arthur manages to get her name. Arthur looks smitten anyway, and I have been subsequently informed that Merlin asks Arthur if he likes Guinevere, and he answers yes. Merlin tells Arthur that ok, he’ll make Guinevere his wife, and Arthur answers yes, without paying too much attention to what Merlin is saying, then realizes that Merlin is saying, and pretty much goes “really” or something along those lines and chases Merlin excitedly off stage.

10 The Mark of the Wolf

Wolfgang / Ensemble

Ensemble (Saxons) get on stage and demonstrate their power.

Lee Sang Jun (Wolfgang), I think, has more to do than his 7th billing suggests, and I think he sings well. I think he has more to do than Ector for sure.

11 Where Are You Now Reprise

Morgana

I think in 10 there might’ve been some Morgana bullying (notably, it seems like Wolfgang’s son (who is a important ensemble member) likes to pull her hair).

So I guess Morgana is again, not very happy.

12 In Troubled Times Like These

Arthur / Guinevere

Guinevere is with a group of girls. It seems like she’s holding some fighting classes or something. Lancelot and Arthur come along (for what purpose isn’t exactly clear to me). Think Lancelot might have said or done something to piss Guinevere off, so Lancelot and Guinevere get into a (not serious) fight. Guinevere wins.

Lancelot wants to like chase girls, and I think the girls want to see the xcalibur. Arthur moves closer to offer the xcalibur to Lancelot to take to chase the girls, and all the girls save Guinevere flock to Lancelot who leads the girls away.

It’s only at this point that the song starts. Unlike If He Was Standing Here, this song is probably even. It seems like some love song, and it seems like at the end there was an intention to kiss, but they get interrupted by the Saxons. Arthur pushes Guinevere away and fights the Saxons (without the xcalibur, or any other kind of proper sword), but soon after Lancelot comes back, hands Arthur his xcalibur, then Arthur, Lancelot and Guinevere (with the bow and arrow) manage to fend off the Saxons. However, Arthur is injured in the process. Wolfgang’s son is seriously injured in this battle, and I think Arthur tells Wolfgang’s son that he is the son of Uther Pendragon.

13 Pagan Dance & Ritual

Ensemble

I think basically what it suggests. A lavish number of ensemble (the female Saxons(??) who like entertain instead of fight, are not as good as the male Saxons). They are celebrating and then engaging in some ritual, which seems to result in perhaps crowning Wolfgang as king? (Morgana is still Saxons’ prisoner).

Wolfgang’s son runs in, and I think is quite injured. Understand that he reveals that he met Uther Pendragon’s son. Wolfgang is angry. Morgana is angry and shocked that Arthur is alive/exists/in the way.

14 Sins of Father

Understand that Morgana is angry/jealous of Arthur for taking away what she believes is rightfully hers, and is angry at her father.

The edges of the dragon in the background shine more brightly as the song goes on, and at the climax, a dragon projection roars out (this does not show up in the press call). Cool stuff but Morgana is definitely the highlight still.

15 The Tempest

Lancelot

Recall that Arthur got injured due to the clash with the Saxons. At the start Arthur didn’t have a weapon because Lancelot took it away to go and chase girls (though to be fair, Arthur offered the xcalibur). Still, Arthur is the one who got injured.

At the start of the scene, some of the knights are angry at Lancelot. Lancelot breaks into song. If you believe the summary, it’s probably Lancelot regretting and vowing to be a better person or something along those lines.

16 In Troubled Times Like This Reprise

Guinevere

Merlin does some singing at the start (understand that he’s backed by ensemble). Arthur is in Merlin’s cave, and Merlin is trying to save him.

Guinevere comes along, and Merlin is quite exhausted from trying to rescue Arthur. Not sure what Merlin tells Guinevere. But at the end of the scene, Guinevere told Arthur that she loves him. Arthur is already awake (or wakes up) and tells her that he loves her too. They embrace.

17 Hundred Years From Now

Ensemble

Scene starts with many villagers who are all out and about building things. There is a fair bit of construction equipment. Ensemble starts out singing a short number.

As you can guess Arthur survives, and walks in (with Guinevere and Merlin supporting him) to a crowd of villagers chanting his name.

18 Why Am I Here

Morgana / Merlin / Arthur

Lightning strikes, and Morgana (somehow) is on the floor (for avoidance of doubt, this is a direct continuation from the previous scene with the villagers still all around them with the construction equipment, though as the scene goes on the villagers start to retreat). I think Arthur and Guinevere check if Morgana is ok, and then Arthur asks Morgana who she is to which Morgana says that she is Morgana Pendragon, and that she is Arthur’s older sister.

Morgana and Merlin have a confrontation, and this is where Morgana breaks into song. Merlin joins in. There is a lot of back and forth between Morgana and Merlin. Then Arthur joins in. And there’s a lot of back and forth. At the end it seems like Merlin is on the other side from Morgana and Arthur.

After the song (I think, but no promises, might have been before), Arthur embraces Morgana. Arthur seems genuinely happy to meet her. It seems like Arthur is not happy that Merlin kept this fact from him.

19 The Mark of The Wolf Reprise

Wolfgang / Ensemble

Saxons display their power. As before, they have a very cool routine in which the Saxons ensemble bang their weapons on their shields. If you sit near the front it’s really quite scary.

20 Sins of Father Reprise Chant

Morgana

As the title suggests, Morgana is angry about the sins of her father.

Crowning of Arthur atop the rock formation. All key casts are present (Merlin, Ector, Guinevere, Lancelot). The knights have now their knight outfits, and well, now knights around the round table. Villagers are also present.

I think the press call is quite accurate, except at the end, the light on Arthur intensifies and gets really bright and then Arthur thrusts his sword into the air to bring an end to Act 1.

I have thoughts, and initially thought of including them, but I have left them out, and have decided this to be a skeletal of the musical instead. I will share my thoughts eventually (probably in a separate post). On DK, let me just say that when I decided to fly in to watch him (I have never flown to watch a concert before), I knew that if he did not meet expectations (whatever that means, to be clear expectations is not to be as good as Junsu or Kai because that’s simply unrealistic), I would likely drop him and leave kpop altogether. That got messed with because the rehearsal reviews were quite positive (which I saw), and I guess, despite that I’m still writing this to piece together the musical so.

Not only is she one of the leading figures in All Elite Wrestling's developing women's division just four years after first stepping foot in the ring, but she's also done it while completing dental school and starting a full-time practice.

Bleacher Report's Jonathan Snowden had the chance to sit down with Dr. Baker to discuss life, the impact of the Wednesday Night Wars on her relationship and the glorious art of professional wrestling.

He also reviewed the best match and promo of the week, took a look at the latest offering from DK Books, tracked the latest battle in the war between AEW and NXT and consolidated a week's worth of wrestling events to catch you up on anything you might have missed.

Dr. Britt Baker, DMD, on AEW's Women's Division and Her Crazy Double Life

The trip to Pittsburgh was about two-and-a-half hours each way—and Britt Baker drove it once a week in the summer of 2014, her conscience heavy with guilt. In the fall, she would start dental school at the University of Pittsburgh. Her life seemed settled.

But professional wrestling had a hold on her heart and wouldn't let go. So she got into the car anyway, driving to class at the International Wrestling Cartel to begin her tutelage in the esoteric art of wrestling, a secret hidden from family and friends in her gossipy home town.

"I was so terrified that my parents were going to hate this that I didn't tell them for five months," she tells Bleacher Report. "I was correct. They were less than thrilled. It's not that they were especially discouraging. It's just what every parent would say. 'Britt, you have a guaranteed successful career ahead of you. You've been accepted into one of the best dental schools in the world. You could get hurt in the wrestling ring and your dental career could be done. Do you understand what you're doing?'"

Stubborn as only a highly capable person in their early 20s can be, Baker was convinced she could learn both crafts simultaneously. She took on what might be a truly unique double major: learning to fix teeth by day and pretending to knock them out by night.

"Wrestling kept me sane during dental school," Baker says. "That was the hardest time of my life, and I don't know how I would have made it without the distractions of wrestling to keep me afloat.

"I would be sitting in the back of my dental implants class, secretly watching Raw from the night before while trying to pay attention in class. And when I was on the road doing wrestling shows, the guys that I would train with would help me. Andrew Palace and Darren Genaro would be flashing me notecards to help me study for an exam.

"I'm setting up the ring and we take a break to study. There aren't many friends like that in the world, people who would use their breaktime to help you study instead of going to get a cheeseburger up the road or just taking a minute to themselves. I was so fortunate early on with the people I surrounded myself with in wrestling."

When she's introduced now as "Dr. Britt Baker, DMD," there is a sense of pride. Unlike most wrestling gimmicks built around a trade, Baker comes by hers honestly. And while most wrestling dentists are bad guys, she hopes fans might make an exception in her case.

"It's my favorite part of every match, the moment I hear that," she says. "It's an affirmation. Yes, that is who I am. I am Dr. Britt Baker, DMD, and I'm a professional wrestler. I don't mean to brag or boast, but I love the recognition for it.

"It was hard. I went to school for eight years to be a dentist. Sorry if the person in the fifth row doesn't like it and thinks I should be a bag guy because people hate the dentist. People might not like the dentist, but they do like people who chase their dreams."

Baker was brave enough to chase two. And now, living in Orlando, Florida, with her boyfriend, NXT champion Adam Cole, she maintains what would be a back-breaking schedule for most, somehow maintaining her career in the ring and a burgeoning dental practice without seemingly missing a beat.

"Both of my worlds are very understanding of the other," she says. "I have an agreement with the dental office I work for that we'll be closed on Wednesdays. Because I'll be in whatever city AEW Dynamite is in. And AEW is OK with me flying in super-late Tuesday night after work or even early Wednesday morning. They are also really good at getting me on the first flight back to Orlando Thursday morning. I get right off the plane and go to work. I am still able to work four days a week as a dentist."

Right now, she is careful to keep her two worlds apart. While she'll talk to patients about wrestling if they bring it up, she's aware that many people might find her dual roles off putting. Sometimes, however, what happens in the wrestling ring isn't easily contained in the ring. Take, for example, a black eye suffered recently at the hands of her burgeoning rival, Bea Priestley.

"The black eye was very interesting," Baker says. "I was getting pretty creative just hiding it. I had my mask on most of the day and we use dental loupes, which are magnifying and have a little light on them. I made sure I had those on all day. Because, it's a whole thing. 'Oh my gosh, what happened to your eye?' and 'What do you mean you're a professional wrestler? I didn't know this!' So, I tried to make it an easier day."

While a black eye can be manageable, more serious injuries pose potential problems in both fields. Earlier this year, her parents' worst fears came true when Baker suffered a major head injury at an AEW pay-per-view in Jacksonville, Florida.

"For five days, I could not see out of the outer corner of my eye," she says. "I had no peripheral vision. It was just black. That terrified me. Doc Sampson, our head doctor for AEW, would call me every day. He's an excellent physician. And, every day, I was so frustrated.

"I was starting to wonder if I was going to be OK, but he was very reassuring, explaining that this is a concussion symptom and I would eventually get my vision back. He told me, 'You got hit really bad, really hard, but it's going to be OK.' But people can tell you that all they want—until it actually comes back, it's scary.

"You can't see and you need your eyes for everything. Especially being a dentist, working in someone's mouth and even drilling on their teeth. I was terrified. Obviously, I couldn't work in the dental office when I couldn't see. That's a lawsuit waiting to happen and not safe. So, it was tough.

"But that's the nature of the game in professional wrestling. People get hurt. It's not ideal, but it happens. Accidents happen. It was a reality check reminding me, 'Hey, be careful.' But, at the same time, I love it. And, when you love what you do, you can accept the risk."

On Wednesday, Baker fought Riho for the AEW Women's Championship, an enormous accomplishment for a woman just four years into her professional career with a mere three weeks on television.

"It's very stressful and exciting," Baker says. "It's baptism by fire. You're wrestling in front of 100 people one week and suddenly you're in front of 10,000. I have so much to learn, but I'm in good hands. I feel like I have the best coaches, the best production crew, the EVPs, Tony, everyone who has a hand in this is one of the best people to be working with in wrestling.

"(AEW owner) Tony Khan is super-hands on. He is everywhere and will be texting creative ideas all the time. He's absolutely fantastic. I can't say enough good things about Tony Khan. He makes every person on the roster feel appreciated. He is happy you are part of his company."

There is a lot of experience to lean on backstage at an AEW event, including agents Dean Malenko, Jerry Lynn and Dustin Rhodes. Perhaps the most integral figures for women looking to live up to bold promises about equality and opportunity are Kenny Omega and Michael Nakazawa, dual-lingual wrestlers who help the contingent of Japanese competitors like Riho communicate with their American counterparts.

"Kenny Omega has a huge role in the women's division," Baker says. "He agents a lot of the matches and he's brought his passion for the Japanese joshi wrestling to our world and it's amazing. I don't have a ton of experience with joshi wrestling, but I love it.

"I'm learning from Kenny by watching how he puts matches together. How lucky can I be? That was one of the selling points for AEW to me when Brandi and Cody (Rhodes) told me he'd have a major role with the women's division. I was a huge fan.

"I was the girl staying up all night to watch Wrestle Kingdom even though I had class the next day. Now I work with Kenny Omega, one of the best wrestlers in the world and a creative genius. Some of his ideas just amaze me. There seems to be no end to his creative insanity."

Baker's rise in the sport comes as Cole reaches new heights of his own in NXT. The two are equally wrestling-obsessed and watch the rival company's competing shows together the day after the events. But Baker admits the dueling Wednesday night broadcasts aren't ideal.

"We are texting and calling each other for encouragement right up until the moment we go out the curtain," she says. "It can be a little heartbreaking when it's the biggest night of his career or the biggest night of my career and we can't be there. Because we're each other's biggest fans and, as a fan, you want to be there and feel the energy. You want to experience it. So, it's a little discouraging.

"But we sit at home and watch each other's matches. We actually watch each other's whole show. We support each other's company. My boyfriend is basically best friends with The Young Bucks, so he's very supportive of All Elite Wrestling."

Baker, like most in AEW, keeps a watchful eye on fan reactions. She's noticed some grumbling among hardcore fans, upset that the promotion hasn't featured women as frequently as they have men. But she urges patience.

"You have to take it with a grain of salt when people, for lack of a better term, bitch and moan about what is and isn't on the show," she says. "Fans are always going to find a reason to grumble. They want one thing week one, you give it to them week two, and then they don't want that anymore. Some fans are very hard to please.

"AEW, we're still so new, so I encourage people to sit back, relax and kind of breathe with us. We're going to give everybody what they want. Sure, there's only one women's match on the show. But maybe there is only one tag team match, too. Enjoy it, let us establish what our brand is, then form your opinion.

"Right now, it's fresh and new. Try to enjoy the ride."

Match of the Week: Kenny Omega vs. Joey Janela (AEW Dark)

In AEW storylines, Kenny Omega is struggling to find his way. After losing to Chris Jericho in a grueling bout at Double or Nothing in May, he was unceremoniously destroyed by a debuting Jon Moxley.

It was enough to send Omega into a tailspin, breaking the former IWGP champion mentally and spiritually.

In the ring, though, he is finding his way. Against an opponent with plenty to prove in Joey Janela, Omega raised his game to heights only he can reach. The result was one of the most remarkable matches of the entire year.

It was an unsanctioned bout that didn't count on their AEW records, but the two men wrestled it like it was a pay-per-view main event and not a match on AEW Dark, a YouTube show available for free to anyone.

The bout was a modern twist on ECW, a match filled with high spots, plunder and plenty of both guts and glory. Imagine the very best technical wrestler in the world wrestling Tommy Dreamer in a match where basically anything goes. That was this match in a nutshell—a must-see for anyone who loves wrestling.

Runner Up: Kota Ibushi vs. Evil (New Japan: King of Pro-Wrestling)

Hard Times Promo of the Week: Darby Allin

The first time I saw Darby Allin wrestle, I knew he was a star. Admittedly, I was late to the party. He'd already spent years wowing crowds at super-indies like Evolve, waiting for the opportunity to take his unique energy to a bigger stage.

My first visit to Planet Darby was on a stage so small there wasn't even room for a ring. He and his wife, the wrestler Priscilla Kelly, were taking on another couple in an intergender bar fight. There were maybe 100 people there, and none of them could take their eyes off of Allin and Kelly.

When they closed the match with Priscilla spitting directly into Darby's open mouth, I knew I had to meet him.

His personal magnetism was evident, his weird energy was of the time. He wasn't cosplaying a skateboard kid with a barely disguised death wish. He was that kid on stage and off. Sans makeup and in a sharp black suit the next day, he was every bit as interesting as I'd anticipated.

His energy was even more powerful in conversation, his passion for performing so strong that he couldn't even hope to hide it in a post-modern haze of ennui or irony. Why, he asked, did wrestlers limit their influences to previous wrestling matches and angles? He intended to look all around him to inform his art with the present and not the past.

Although not immediately identifiable, it's this perspective that makes him feel different. Fans are getting a taste of it right now on AEW television.

AEW provided the platform, and Darby used it to make himself the first breakout performer in the promotion's short history. He may not have beaten Chris Jericho for the championship but check back here in six months and we'll count coup then.

Because Darby Allin is a star.

Wednesday Night Wars: Week 3 Showdown Between AEW and NXT

It's Week 3 in the Wednesday Night Wars, as AEW went head-to-head with NXT on national television once more.

The wrestling world has turned its attention to this midweek battle for supremacy and both brands have brought their best.

The result has been a spectacular win for fans. Among the promotions, though, there can be only one winner.

Let's run down each show in the two major categories that combine to create great wrestling television.

Wrestling

As Arn Anderson once said, "it's on the marque." Everything else is built around the action in the ring, and both brands specialize in modern, exciting action.

As is becoming the norm, AEW promised an incredible card and somehow delivered excellence even beyond our expectations.

The best technical match was the barnburner between Kenny Omega/Adam Page and Pac/Moxley. One day after announcing he was still the top performer in the world at AEW Dark, birthday boy Omega teamed with Page to again steal the show.

The Elite beat Pac and Moxley in a slobberknocker that saw all four at the top of their games, a combination of high-flying action and enough storytelling elements to build future matches between the quartet.

But the match we'll all remember was the main event, a star-making performance from Darby Allin, the 22-year-old prodigy who literally wrestled much of the event with his hands behind his back. He gave champion Chris Jericho all that he could handle, even without the use of his hands, forcing The Inner Circle's Jake Hager to interfere and preserve Jericho's reign.

Allin is a star.

NXT has a different approach. Most of the matches don't feel like a big deal, bordering on being simple, competitive squash bouts with obvious winners. They are well-executed, with the winners looking like stars, but it's hard to compare positively with AEW using this approach.

Two bouts stood out: the rubber match between Keith Lee and Dominic Dijakovic and the main event battle of attrition featuring Damian Priest's upset win over Pete Dunne. Lee and Dijakovic have good chemistry, but their clash was marred by a sports-entertainment finish setting up a three-way dance with Roderick Strong next week.

The main event had some mild shenanigans at the end, but it was an excellent back-and-forth contest worth seeking out.

Advantage: AEW

Presentation and Storytelling

This was the best night yet for AEW's commentary team of Jim Ross, Tony Schiavone and Excalibur. The three men are starting to figure out where they fit in and when it's time to hit their spots.

Ross seemed engaged throughout and Schiavone, in particular, always seems to chime in just when he's needed.

There was an excellent vignette that told much of the story I shared in my Cody Rhodes feature piece earlier in the month and set up his title challenge against Chris Jericho nicely. AEW shines here with these videos. Their shoulder programming generally is top notch.

The co-main event set up a match next week between Pac and Jon Moxley and generally made everyone involved look amazing. The main event further cemented Allin as a star of the future while establishing Jericho and The Inner Circle as bad actors willing to cheat to win. Solid, basic storytelling.

NXT did a much better job of building its characters this week and further defining who the key players are and what they're about. Johnny Gargano felt like a big deal for the first time and Shayna Baszler cut one of the best promos I've seen from her, telling a returning Tegan Nox, "Let's be honest, you're running out of limbs to rehab."

When Mauro Ranallo is on, he's one of the best announcers in the sport. An enthusiastic Mauro is a lot of fun to listen to. A Mauro who is trying to namedrop the Brazilian stink bug makes me think about reaching for the mute button. He walks a continuous fine line between excellence and utter disaster.

This show did an excellent job building for next week and teased future bouts such as Io Shirai and Rhea Ripley that have fans salivating. NXT's best effort yet as an overall show.

Advantage: Even

Overall

As good as NXT was, AEW is going to be hard to beat when they are loaded for bear the way they were Wednesday night. No one on NXT can match Jericho, Omega or Cody Rhodes as overall performers, and the undercard wrestlers on TNT are given the time and freedom to make something special of their segments.

Given the opportunity to shine, great talent is always going to deliver something worth watching. So far, AEW has done this every single week.

Winner: AEW

Three-Count: A Look Ahead

AEW Dynamite (October 23, TNT)

Pac vs. Jon Moxley: These two couldn't get along during their tag team match Wednesday against Kenny Omega and Adam Page, and they will settle their differences next week in Pittsburgh. Wins and losses matter in AEW, making this match of particular importance to Pac, who is seemingly close to earning a title shot. Prediction: Moxley emerges victorious after outside interference by a member of the Elite.

Private Party vs. Lucha Bros: Wondering if the Lucha Bros were babyface or heels? Wonder no more. They announced their presence on the villainous side of the ledger with a brutal attack on SCU. They will likely do something equally dastardly to the up-and-coming tag team that upset The Young Bucks in the first round. Prediction: Private Party comes to an end and the Lucha Bros advance to the AEW Tag Team Tournament finals.

SCU vs. Dark Order: We don't know a lot about Dark Order, the one notable failure on the part of AEW's creative team. They've had such a golden touch that the one bust really stands out. Prediction: SCU gets the upset and earns the opportunity at revenge against the Lucha Bros.

Nintendo E3 Wish List

In just a few short weeks, gaming’s most exciting event will be upon us!

I’ll be honest and own up to my bias: I love Nintendo! Apart from some of the console war BS between Microsoft and Sony that I basically treat the same way most normal people treat any given episode of The Bachelorette, Nintendo is the only one I really care about. I have a Switch and I can’t wait to load it up!

So what do I want to see from it? Well, here are a few things divided into some simple categories!

GIVENS - Stuff that we know for a fact is likely going to be showcased at E3

POSSIBILITIES - Stuff that we have evidence to suggest is coming to the Switch, but no confirmation as to when

REACHES - Stuff that we have no indication is coming, but I want to see nonetheless

This got long, so everything’s under the cut!

GIVENS

Pokemon Sword and Shield release date and new Pokemon - We ALL know this is coming. That said, we’re also getting a Direct next week, so we won’t be getting anything too extravagant, but still a little bit more news. My hopes for this are the stage two evolutions of the starters and one or two random others.

Animal Crossing’s release date and gameplay footage - Animal Crossing is on its way! I think it’ll be released sometime around mid-November and I can’t wait! What I want this time will be a deeper means of growing relationships between yourself and your neighbors. As for my big, out-there prediction for the gimmick of the next game, as stupid as it sounds, maybe something with time travel. Jumping ahead to our favorite holidays is part of what makes Animal Crossing so much fun, and Nintendo knows it. They even made ‘time traveler’ one of the rumors

Second Smash Bros DLC Character Reveal - Yeah, this is gonna happen. My predictions? They’ll be released sometime this summer -- maybe August. As to WHO it will be, my predictions are Sans, Banjo, a Monster Hunter character (I heard a rumor and there’s a Monster Hunter-themed Smash Bros boss), Waluigi, Professor Layton, Shantae, and Sora (More on him later). Sans is my biggest hope for because I’m Undertale trash and want to go all Megalovania on Jigglypuff, the Ice Climbers, and Ridley!

More Labo VR Stuff - I haven’t been sucked into the Nintendo Labo hole yet, but I will say that the VR stuff for Odyssey seems pretty cool and VR is a growing big deal in the industry! This is Nintendo’s answer to that and if they do things for a few more upcoming and already released titles, I’ll have to check it out! My predictions are that we could see the Labo VR stuff happen for Yoshi’s Crafted World and the upcoming Animal Crossing title.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses - I feel like we’re only gonna spend a few minutes on this game. it comes out a month after this conference and the time spent here will just be to entice a straggler or two into buying it.

Link’s Awakening - Like with Fire Emblem, I think this will be very short and just touch upon the basic changes and updates, but given that it closed out the last non-specialized Nintendo Direct, I’d be SHOCKED if it went without a mention.

POSSIBILITIES

Ace Attorney - From what I understand, we’re supposedly getting an Ace Attorney game this year, and I figure if any place will show it off, it will be at E3. Do I think it’ll get a red carpet or anything? No, but I could easily see a little clip of it during a run through of upcoming third party titles and that would be more than enough for me! I can’t wait for the next game!

Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker Re-Releases - So I don’t know how many of you saw Nintendo’s April Fool’s Direct (I’ve watched it...several times because it is laugh out loud HYSTERICAL), but some things stuck out to me as possibly legit, and those were the two Zelda ports. Both had trailers, and Wind Waker on the Switch had a ZR button on the screen with the rest of Link’s supplies. Could it possibly be coming to the Switch? And as for Ocarina, it’s been nearly ten years since it was re-released on the 3DS! With release dates that were slated for this winter, I think it’s possible that both could be on the way. Maybe they’ll even co-release Ocarina with Majora’s Mask!

REACHES

Super Mario 3D World Deluxe - There have been a TON of ports on the Switch from the Wii U. I don’t think that’s a problem at all -- the Wii U was not a commercial success, and the Switch was, but the Wii U had really impressive titles. I’m glad that they’re being re-purposed for a system that’s selling so more people have the opportunity to play these games. But out of all the ports, THIS is the one I want the most. I never had a Wii U and I want to play this game bad enough that I’ve seriously considered buying the now defunct console for it...BUT even as something of a Nintendo collector, I don’t want to HAVE to. So Nintendo, want to do me a solid and bring this one over? I know I put the word “deluxe” in there, but that’s only because you’ve done that with basically every port that’s hit the Switch thus far and given that you’re...you, you’ll probably add a playable DK or Wario or Waluigi (This is why I love you, Nintendo -- you don’t just do ports, but you make new stuff for your ports too), but honestly, if we JUST get a more or less straight port, I’ll be more than happy.

THIRD Smash Bros DLC character reveal - It has been a WHILE since the first DLC fighter was revealed back in December. We’ll DEFINITELY see the second fighter revealed at E3, but maybe, just maybe, we’ll see the third as well. I have no evidence of this, but hey -- a girl can dream, am I right?

Stardew Valley Update - I heard the creator of Stardew Valley is working on an update to his hit game, and I am PUMPED to play it! Maybe E3 will be the showcase for the updates given how popular this indie title has become.

Kingdom Hearts...something - Once again, just so I don’t spread any misinformation I have NO evidence whatsoever about this (I’m just a Nintendo fan and a borderline casual one at that), but given how Nintendo has released so many Kingdom Hearts titles, maybe we’ll get something. Now that Nintendo and Square have gotten so buddy-buddy between Cloud being in Smash and the releases of the Play Station X’s Final Fantasy titles on the Switch, I don’t think this is too far out of left field to suggest. Now, this could come in the form of a side title for the Switch, Sora in Smash, or hell, maybe one of the compilation re-releases, but I just have a feeling that this could happen.

SEVENTEEN ON ROLLING STONE:

The 13-member K-pop boy band Seventeen sat down with Rolling Stone to discuss their KCON L.A. appearance, and what's next for the group.

Nearly 100,000 attendees. Close to 200 panels and workshops. Nineteen artists spanning two nights. The stats for this year’s KCON Los Angeles were striking, but many left the August K-pop festival and convention with one number on their mind: Seventeen.

Both in terms of membership and popularity, Seventeen are one of K-pop’s biggest boy bands. Made up of 13 young men in their teens and early twenties, the outfit debuted in mid-2015 and quickly stood out in South Korea’s polished pop scene for their deep dedication to writing, producing and choreographing their own music. If 13 members seem like a lot to keep track of, they helpfully divide themselves into three separate factions: the Hip-Hop Unit, featuring rappers S.Coups, Wonwoo, Mingyu and Vernon; the Vocal Unit, with singers Woozi, Jeonghan, Joshua, DK and Seungkwan; and the Performance Unit, made up of the group’s top dancers Hoshi, Jun, The8 and Dino. Seventeen have not only racked up some of South Korea’s best first-week albums sales ever; they’ve also scored impressive chart feats in America, as one of the few K-pop acts with multiple Number Ones on Billboard‘s world-genre charts.

Before they closed out the final day of KCON concerts on August 12th, the guys hung backstage at the Staples Center in comfy T-shirts before changing into their SoCal surfer-boy wardrobe of trendy Hawaiian tees, tropical button-downs and ripped jeans. The members, including L.A. resident Joshua, laid relatively low during their time in town, and one gets the sense it’s because their next trip could be very different. During a chit-chat with the crowd where a snippet of 2015 single “Mansae” played and the entire arena instinctively broke out in the song’s signature hand-wave choreography, it became evident that Seventeen might become the next K-pop act to headline their own American arena show. During an exclusive chat with Rolling Stone, the group discussed their origins, their L.A. visit and what’s next.

How has this Los Angeles trip been?

Joshua: I was very, very excited to go home, meet my parents and meet my friends. The weather was so good that I went out for a walk with Hoshi, saw an iHOP and ate there. My mother actually came in the middle of it and I enjoyed it that much more. But I was so happy to be on the stage at L.A. KCON again, in my hometown. Also, I was all the more happy because so many more fans came than I thought.

Vernon: Really every time I go to L.A., I feel like it makes a great memory. Especially this time, I was very happy to meet Tobi [Lou], an artist who I like so much and listen to a lot. I was so happy to introduce Tobi and the people around me to each other, eat some delicious food together, go to the studio and talk to each other about work.

This is your first visit to the United States since you toured North America last year. How do you look back on that theater tour?

Dino: As they say, “time flies” since it’s already been a year. I think last year’s tour in the U.S. was a fresh experience. I didn’t really feel like I was onstage necessarily, and I remember having a lot of fun.

Seungkwan: It really was an unforgettable tour. It was so good to be able to perform with our songs in a country where there are pop singers whom I have admired since I was practicing to become a pop singer myself. And it gave me goosebumps to know that there are people [in America] who love Seventeen. Next time, I want to meet many fans in a bigger concert hall.

Wonwoo: I actually look back on the tour as a time that was really healing to me. The excited atmosphere and fans, the beautiful streets we visited — I think they were all healing.

The8: It’s a precious memory, for sure. … I’ve learned about a wider and more diverse world, but I’ve also felt that I should work harder.

For those unfamiliar, can you explain how the 13 of you come together as one act?

Hoshi: We’ve been [training] together for a really long time, and I think we can be one [team] because we have respect and trust for each other [laughs].

S.Coups: I think of Seventeen as a family. We really do care and cherish each other all the time. Sometimes we have a fight, but the more we talk to each other, the more we trust each other.

When it comes to boy bands both in Korea and internationally, Seventeen is one of the acts leading the way. Do you have any thoughts to why you’ve been able to connect so well?

Hoshi: It feels great because many people seem to love K-pop and we’ll keep trying to be a leader in K-pop both musically and performance-wise.

Vernon: I think I’m getting more and more excited because many people recognize me more than I think I even realize.

Joshua: And I’m very happy that many foreign fans seem to enjoy listening to our music.

Since you last visited America in August 2017, you released your Teen, Age full-length album, the Korean EP Director’s Cut, your first Japanese EP, and most recently your You Make My Day EP in July. What is your production schedule like?

Mingyu: There was a five-month hiatus before You Make My Day came out, but I still felt like I was in a hurry to work and impatient because I wanted to come out with new music quickly. Still, I think we were more careful when preparing this album with something that would look good to the public.

Jeonghan: Since this album is a summer album, the songs ended up being very exciting and cool and we actually prepared this specific album by freestyle dancing in our practice room while listening to songs.

Seventeen recently debuted in Japan with your first original single “Call Call Call!,” which felt like it had a bit more edge compared to your Korean releases. Woozi, was that going through your mind while producing and writing this one?

Woozi: You said that because it’s a good thing to have an edge, right? [Laughs] Thank you very much. The Japanese song was a new challenge, but I think it was more interesting rather than difficult. I think we had [an] overall good result.

Your group has three set groups — the Hip-Hop, Vocal and Performance Unit — and earlier this year, Seungkwan, Hoshi and DK released music under the name Boo Seok Soon. Will we see more member combinations?

DK: We always think that there can be a variety of units. … I would tell fans to look forward to the various units of Seventeen as well as the overall music of Seventeen.

Hoshi: There are many members, so I think there are many different cases. I would also tell fans to please look forward to it.

Woozi: I think various units are the strength of the Seventeen team. Isn’t there going to be a new and fun unit soon in the future? [Laughs] We’re just as curious and excited as the fans are.

How do you feel the group has grown since your start in 2015, and where do you see Seventeen going in the future?

Jun: Sometimes, I’m surprised when I see the members onstage [laughs]. There seems to be a lot of growth that we’ve shown onstage when I look at our facial expressions, dancing lines and the details. And I think I have grown a lot because I tried to show the public a better image of myself.

Seungkwan: When I was a trainee, I practiced hard until dawn with my members with all my heart because I was so eager to make my debut. But even these days, when we are preparing for an album or preparing for the stage, we still practice hard until dawn. But thanks to the love and support of [official fan-club members] Carats all over the world, I think we grew up thanks their undying efforts.

Woozi: I think we’re growing well right now? [Laughs] We want to be a group who will continue to show great performances and steadily grow so more and more people can find happiness with our music and performances.

S.Coups: We will try to meet you in as many places as possible in 2018. Also, we will continue to show good music and performance, so please expect even more from us and give Seventeen a lot of support and love. Thank you.

You’re Scared To Meet The Other Members ~ Seventeen Reaction

S.Coups:

“What’s there to be scared of?” Seungcheol asked you as you admitted to him your nerves as he suggested it was about time that you finally met the other members.

“What if they hate me? What if they don’t want me to be with you or around the group?” You quickly challenged, unable to stop yourself from fretting about the situation.

His head shook, reaching for your hand to be able to wrap both of his around yours, “I’m the leader, I’ll give them no choice but to like you and accept you Y/N.”

“You can’t do that, and I would expect you to either,” you sighed, “but it’s a possibility, they really could dislike me, then what do we do?”

His head continued to shake, “stop thinking so negatively, I know my members, and I know that they’ll adore you just like I do.”

“How can you be so sure?” You pushed.

“Trust me, I’m never wrong.”

The corners of your mouth slowly turned up at his confidence, “if they hate me, it’s your fault, I hope you know that. You’re the one promising me that they’ll love me.”

“I’ll take full responsibility, although I know that there’s nothing to worry about,” he continued to smile, “please don’t be scared to meet them.”

“I’ll try not to be anymore.”

Jeonghan:

“Why would I listen to them if they told me to break up with you anyway?” Jeonghan questioned as yet again you began to panic about the looming meeting with the boys.

“Because they’re your members, they’re your best friends,” you reminded him, “if they don’t like me, there’s no way that they’ll want you to stay with me, they’ll hate it.”

He chuckled softly at how panicked you were, “what’s to say they’ll hate you anyway? Because I know them, and I know that they’ll love you and what us to be together.”

“I hate how positive you always try to be,” you muttered under your breath, “do you ever prepare for the worst for any situation Jeonghan?”

His head shook proudly, “why would I prepare for the worst when I know the worst would never happen? We’ll never break up Y/N.”

“You sound so confident,” you pointed out.

“That’s because I’m incredibly confident.”

You stared across at him and the wide smile that he wore, “I wish I had your confidence, because right now I want to run away from all of your members.”

“I won’t let you run away, I’m excited for you to meet them and for all of you to get on so well, because I know that you will,” he vowed to you once again.

“I just really hope that you’re right.”

Joshua:

“How do you feel about meeting the boys?” Joshua asked you, taking you by complete surprise as the two of you sat to dinner. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to be so abrupt.”

“No, it’s fine,” you replied, trying to force a smile onto your face. “It’s just something I’ve tried really hard not to think about since we started dating, that’s all.”

His brows knitted together, “you’ve tried not to think about?” He asked, shocked when your head nodded. “Why would you think about not meeting them?”

“Because everything feels so good right now, and meeting each other’s friends is usually the spanner in the works for something to go wrong,” you confessed in response back to him.

His head shook at your reply, “we wouldn’t let it be the spanner in the works, we’d work through it if there were any bumps and things would be fine.”

“A bump as big as if they dislike me?” You retorted.

“Why would you think like that?”

You let go of a heavy sigh at Joshua’s serious response, “I watched it happen to Y/F/N, and I don’t want it to happen to me too, she was never happy since, and I don’t want to be the same.”

“You’d never be the same, because you’re not Y/F/N, you’re you,” he smiled, “and you know that I wouldn’t introduce you to my friends if it wasn’t for the best.”

“I guess you’re right, it can’t be as bad as I think.”

Jun:

“I get it,” Junhui smiled straight away when you told him your concerns about meeting the boys, “I felt the same way when you suggested meeting your friends.”

“But my friends aren’t global superstars,” you pointed out to him, “most of my friends work in clothing stores, they’re nobodies, they’re unrecognisable on the street.”

Junhui nodded in agreement, “they are still your friends though, which makes it important to me that I get along with them, regardless of who they are. Just like you and the boys.”

“I guess you’re right,” you whispered, looking away from his eyes, “I just feel like I’m stepping into the shoes that millions of your fans could only dream of to meet them.”

His hand reached out to rest over yours, “you’re meeting them as my girlfriend, those are shoes that no one will ever fill, I promise.”

“It’s still such a huge deal,” you reminded him.

“As was meeting your friends to me.”

The more Junhui spoke, admitting to you just how nervous he was to meet your friends, you got it. “I know that I need to stop stressing about it all and just enjoy meeting them.”

“I was scared too,” he comforted, “but just like I did with your friends, I’m sure that you’ll settle around the boys in no time and really get along.”

“I’m sure I will too, you’ve told me so many great things.”

Hoshi:

“They’re good people,” Soonyoung assured you, taking a tight hold of your hand, “and good people hate no one, it’s like a rule of human nature I swear.”

“I don’t think that’s quite how it works,” you laughed, “you hate the women three doors down and you’re supposed to be a good person, you can’t stand the poor woman.”

He bit down on his bottom lip, noting how stumped he was. “You get my point though, it’s just impossible fort he boys to not to love you, they’re adorable.”

“Are you still trying to defend your logic?” You frowned, “it wouldn’t be the end of the world if they hate me, I guess it would just make things a little more complicated.”

His head shook at your response, “stop trying to think so negatively, you’re the cutest, which means that the boys will fall in love with you too…just as friends, nothing more.”

“You’re digging yourself a bigger hole,” you smiled.

“I’m just trying to make you feel better.”

You squeezed gently against his hand, “I think it’s best if you probably just stop talking about all of this, because every comforting word you’ve given so far, I’ve proven wrong.”

“You’re probably right, but good people don’t hate,” he tried to assure you once again, “it’s not my fault the old lady is just simply intolerable.”

“Alright, I guess she might ask for it a little.”

Wonwoo:

“I’ve told them every possible thing they’ll love about you, which makes it wholeheartedly impossible for them to dislike,” Wonwoo tried to assure you as you panicked.

“That sounds impossible,” you argued, letting go of a peaceful giggle as his head nodded back at you. “You can’t have told them every possible thing that they’ll love.”

His head continued to nod, “I was there a long time because there are just so many things to love about you, but I did it. Every single last thing that you could think of.”

“You told them about how I like to fold the end of the toilet paper because it looks cute?” You challenged, surprised when his head nodded back at you.

Wonwoo let go of a chuckle, “I really do mean it when I tell you that I told them every last thing, I didn’t miss out a thing.”

“Even my weird cereal habit?” You asked.

“Especially your weird cereal habit.”

You couldn’t quite believe just how much detail he had gone to, ensuring that the boys adored you. “Was there really anything that you missed to tell them?”

“I told you,” he chuckled yet again, “there was nothing I was missing, they’ve really got no choice but to like you, and see how amazing you are.”

“I hope they don’t think I’m too weird now.”

Woozi:

“Don’t worry,” his voice whispered as you noticed the car pull up outside your apartment that was taking you to the event. “The boys will love you, I’m sure of it.”

“I’m not,” you frowned back at Jihoon, unable to hide the fear from your gaze. “Tonight, could go terribly, then where do we go from there? Just break up or something?”

His head shook instantly, “they know that I’m happy, which means before they’ve even met you, they love you. All they’ve ever wanted is for me to be happy, that’s it.”

“But I still could not be enough,” you whispered under your breath, beginning to walk towards the door only for Jihoon to pull you back.

His hand gripped tightly around your wrist, “I’m being serious, my happiness is their happiness. You make me smile, so you’ll make them smile too.”

“I just don’t want to let you down,” you sighed.

“Why would you ever do that?”

Your eyes looked up to meet his, “they’ve all probably painted a picture of me and how happy I make you, but what if I don’t match that, what if I’m worse than that?”

“That would be impossible,” he assured you, “if anything, I know for a fact that you’ll be better than any of them could have ever imagined.”

“I want to be good for them, that’s all.”

DK:

“They’ll see in you what I see in you,” Seokmin assured you as soon as he noticed the first couple of tears roll down your cheeks. “They’ll love you just like I do Y/N.”

“You can’t guess that,” you whimpered, feeling his hand rest underneath your chin, “what if they don’t see me in the same that you see me and end up hating me?”

His head shook, tilting your head back so that you could meet his eyes, “I’ve spent years with these guys, I know what they like and dislike, and I know that they’ll love you.”

“Stop finding all the answers to my concerns,” you sniggered back at him, dabbing under your eyes with the sleeves of the shirt you wore.

He grinned back at you, “if you’re asking me to stop comforting you, then it’s never going to happen. This is what I’m supposed to do.”

“I’m supposed to be worrying,” you laughed.

“And I’m the one who stops that.”

You leant forwards to rest your head against his shoulder, “I know that you know the boys, and I know that I should probably listen to what you say as well.”

“I know it’s hard, but when they see you smile and laugh, they’ll see why I love you and why you’re the perfect addition to our team,” he smiled.

“Well, I’m definitely feeling the pressure now.”

Mingyu:

“Why would they ever hate you?” Mingyu seriously asked you as you curled into his side, unbottling the fears you’d held in for so long over meeting all of his members.

“I don’t know,” you whispered against his chest, “it’s just a feeling that I have that things will go wrong, I can’t really pinpoint why I think that they’d ever really hate me.”

His lips pressed to the top of your head, “I think you’re worrying for nothing, and anyway, if any of them hated you, I’d make them realise that they should like you.”

“And how would you ever be able to do that?” You questioned, propping yourself up with your elbow, resting it carefully against his chest closely.

He shrugged back at you, “I’d find a way, I’m the tall one, and I reckon I could be quite intimidating to them if I really wanted to be.”

“You can’t scare them into liking me,” you frowned.

“It’s a good job I don’t need to then.”

His hands jabbed gently against your waist to try and bring a smile back to your face. “Stop trying to convince me that there’s no reason for me to worry about all of this.”

“I can’t stop you worrying you, but I’ll try my best to put your mind at ease,” Mingyu grinned, “you really don’t need to worry yourself though.”

“I’ll be glad once all of this is done, and I’ve met them.”

The8:

“The boys have been asking to meet you a lot recently too,” Minghao called out to you as you ended yet another call with his parents. “They’re keen to see you in person.”

“Oh,” you stuttered, slightly taken by surprise as you made your way into the kitchen. “Maybe we should give it a bit more time just yet, we’re hardly in a rush.”

Your response instantly had Minghao confused, “why does it sound like you don’t want to meet the members of my group at all Y/N, do you not like them or something?”

“It’s not that,” you sighed, turning around to look back at him, “but meeting them just feels so real, and I wouldn’t want for anything to go wrong because of it.”

He continued to stare at you in confusion, “why would anything ever go wrong? They’re desperate to meet you because they know how lovely you are.”

“How can they say that without meeting me?”

“Stop being negative,” he frowned.

You picked up a bottle of water before joining his side, “it’s not that I’m trying to be negative, but what if they end up disliking me, or if they have too high expectations of me?”

“Firstly, they would never dislike you, you’re my partner, secondly, their expectations are high, but I know that you can far exceed them,” he tried to assure you.

“I’m not sure, I’ll think about it for now.”

Seungkwan:

“Do you trust me?” Seungkwan asked as the panic set in as you began to get ready for your trip to the studio, and your first time meeting the other members of the group too.

“That’s a stupid question, of course, I do,” you sighed, running your hands through your hair to settle your locks, “I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t trust in you Seungkwan.”

He took a seat beside you at your vanity desk, “if you trust me, then you’ll listen to me and know that you have no reason to worry about anything today.”

“It’s easy for you to sit there and tell me not to worry,” you frowned, “but I’m terrified that they really will hate me and not want me to be there.”

His hand held onto yours, “if that’s how you feel, then you can’t trust me. You have to trust in me and the things that I’m saying Y/N.”

“I know, but it’s not that easy,” you sighed.

“I know it isn’t.”

You glanced across at him, “I’m not like you, these situations terrify me. You know that I trust in you, but that’s not enough to stop me worrying about so much of today.”

“Just try and worry as little as possible at least, for me,” he pleaded, “I don’t want you to worry about something that I know will be alright.”

“You’re probably right, things will be fine with them.”

Vernon:

“Are you even breathing?” Vernon chuckled as you sat at the table, noticing the first of his members walking into the restaurant for your first meeting with them all.

“I don’t think so,” you admitted, feeling your heartbeat quicken out of fear. “I just don’t want them to hate me. Where’s the nearest exit if I need to run away Vern?”

He laughed quietly at your comment, “you don’t need to worry about any exit doors, or anyone hating you. Just be yourself, that’s all you ever need to do.”

“I’m so scared,” you admitted as you noticed that it was Wonwoo who was approaching the table. “I don’t want to be the reason that they hate you either.”

Vernon reached for your hand underneath the table, “no one is hating anyone, just take some deep breaths and relax yourself.”

“Count,” you whispered, knowing he’d understand.

“In for three and relax.”

Slowly, as Vernon helped you along, your breathing settled as Wonwoo was inches from the table. “Y/N,” he smiled instantly when he saw you sat at Vernon’s side.

“Hi,” you squeaked nervously, continuing to grip tightly onto Vernon��s hand as Wonwoo sat to the table, instantly sitting at your side.

“It’s so good to finally meet you in person.”

Dino:

“Don’t fret,” a voice spoke up as you stared aimlessly out of the window in the taxi. “You don’t need to be scared,” Chan added from the seat beside you comfortingly.

“How can I not fret?” You sighed, turning your head around to look across at him, “so much is riding on tonight, they’re so protective of you, there’s every risk they could hate me.”

He let go of a soft chuckle, “there’s also every chance that they could love you too. Have you thought for a moment about the face that they could like you?”

“Not really,” you shamefully admitted, “I just never imagined that they’d want for their youngest member to find a girlfriend, that’s all.”

He reached his hand across to rest against your leg, “if it makes you feel better, I’m the one that they’ve been trying to set up on dates.”

“But you’re the baby of the group,” you giggled.

“Which is exactly why they do it.”

Chan continued to glance across at you, desperate to see even a hint of a smile from you. “Do you really think that they’ll like me tonight and that we’ll get on?”

“I’m incredibly confident that they’ll like you, I know you, and I know the boys,” he reminded you, “I’ll be forgotten about by you all by the end of the evening.”

“There’s no way I’d ever let that happen.”
