NEW MAP: Sub-Saharan Africa 1897: Batetela Rebellion (13 July 1897) https://buff.ly/2B0qNZG Intent on securing the southern Sudan, the Congo Free State mounted a two-pronged invasion of the Mahdist State in late 1896. Although the first prong successfully conquered the Lado Enclave in February, the second, more ambitious, effort to march down the Nile and take Fashoda collapsed when the native troops involved—mostly Batetela—revolted and instead seized large parts of the eastern Congo. NEW MAP: Northern Africa 1897: Kitchener in Sudan (7 August 1897) https://buff.ly/3hyMsY5 In March 1896 Anglo-Egyptian forces under Herbert Kitchener began their reconquest of Sudan from the Mahdist State. To help supply and transport the troops involved, Kitchener ordered the construction of a railway across the Nubian Desert, bypassing a long stretch of the Nile. South West Africa was designated a Class C Mandate—to be administered as an integral territory—and assigned to South Africa in December 1920. Germany promptly claimed the 1906 Algeciras Agreement had been violated and sent a gunboat to the Moroccan port of Agadir. As a result, Congolese troops mutinied against their Belgian officers and the country broke down into disorder. In response, Belgium sent in paratroopers to protect white civilians and backed a secessionist movement in mineral-rich Katanga province.
